Outdoor patio

Came here for my first time to see a local band on a Sunday evening. Found out they have a Sunday evening summer concert series, which is cool as you don't usually get good consistent music on a Sunday night. They must have a good reputation as the outdoor patio was busy. It's definitely a biker bar, and filled with locals. The beer is cheap, as they have a lot of specials for domestic beers. I was happy with the $1.75 mug of PBR. I didn't see much craft beer there. Inside they had two or three sets of taps with the same eight-ish taps. I also saw a lot of people drinking Press, which is a spiked seltzer based out of WI. I had two downsides with my experience. First was when opening my tab I gave my American Express card and was told I would have a $25 minimum! I've never heard of having a minimum of $25...that's ridiculous! I wasn't planning on drinking 14 PBRs, and fortunately had my other credit card which was a $10 minimum. I would have been less upset if they said we don't accept Americn Express. The service was solid. The two bartenders outside were going in every direction, even going out to the tables asking if they needed a drink. My issue was after getting my first drink at the bar, I went to my friends who were sitting at a table. The same bartender would go to the table and ask my friends if they needed a drink but never acknowledged me. I kept going back to the bar, and did get my drinks in a timely manner. I'm just puzzled why the bartender didn't ask me when I was at the table.

Terrible service. They kicked a blind man out because of his guide dog. That's illegal, by the way. Do NOT recommend.

My experience this time around was a little bit more of a let down hence why I had to take one star off. When I went few months ago, I had burnt coffee which I chalked it up as a one time error. But it happened again with this visit, so that told me they don't really pay much attention to their coffee yet they have a whole menu dedicated to coffee. I also made a reservation on a Sunday knowing it fills up quick and that it might be hard to get a table, however, it was an hour and half before they close which means they tend to slow down around that time. Also, when making a reservation, it'll ask you if you want bar, dining area or patio. I chose dining area. Yet they called me an half hour before to see if I wanted to sit at the bar, which I told them twice in person I do not want to, and as a result the hostess gave me the annoyed/judgmental look down when I wasn't looking. As someone who has owned a family restaurant business for 30 years, that's a big no-no in terms of customer service. It's just rude and unnecessary. Also, they kind of really try to get customers out by 2, which is when they close. By standard at most restaurants, they need an extra hour after closing for customers to take their time with their meals rather than rushing through it, especially if you will sit them 20 minutes before closing time. I felt rushed, and I don't like that feeling at a place I'm trying to enjoy my meal. Would I come back here? Absolutely yes because their food is really the best for brunch in the area and it's cleaner. It just shouldn't be an excuse with certain things like what I mentioned above. P.S. if chicken and waffles happens to be one of the specials, get it. It's by far the best dish I've ever tried there and also my top 3 chicken & waffles that I've tried anywhere. SO GOOD!

Walking into Author's Kitchen + Bar in Appleton, WI feels like stepping into a warm memory. The…read moremoment we opened the door, the creak of the original wooden floors greeted us alongside the cheerful hum of a bustling kitchen. Laughter rang from somewhere behind the counter, a sound that immediately set the tone for a visit rooted in hospitality and heart. Kailin welcomed us with a smile that matched the inviting aroma wafting from the kitchen. After guiding us to our table, we settled into the comfort of the cozy dining room, accompanied by the subtle percussion of footsteps on those charming old floors. Within moments, our server appeared, effortlessly balancing warmth and efficiency as they presented a glass of fresh-brewed iced tea, beads of condensation catching the afternoon light, and a steaming mug of coffee rich with the scent of roasted beans. We began our lunch with a bowl of tomato cream soup. It arrived piping hot, its vibrant color promising comfort. The first spoonful delivered on that promise: velvety and rich, with a gentle heat balanced by a quiet sweetness, each bite coating the palate in layers of flavor. Before we could fully finish savoring the soup, our empanadas made their entrance. Today's lineup included cheese and quinoa, chicken and cheese, and beef. The empanadas were a feast for the senses--golden, flaky crusts that crunched delicately beneath the fork, releasing steam fragrant with seasoned fillings. Each bite was a perfect contrast of textures: the crisp pastry giving way to molten, well-seasoned centers. The trio of sauces elevated the experience--the truffle aioli luxuriously earthy, the tomato cream sauce echoing the soup's comforting warmth, and a third option adding a playful zip. From the first creak of the floorboards to the last satisfying bite, the meal at Author's was a five-star journey. It wasn't just service; it was service from the heart, guided by intuition and a genuine love for the craft. In a world of transactional dining, Author's stands apart as an experience where every sensory detail is curated with care.

A few facts: Parking is on the street. It doesn't open until 8 AM. The menu isn't huge. The decor is simple but nice. The music is similar to what you hear on most elevator rides. The Experience: We grabbed a seat in the mostly empty restaurant. We got our drinks and ordered. Our waitress was nice and was attentive to refilling my coffee cup. We ate and drank at a leisurely pace, never feeling rushed. The Food: my dining partner said their waffle and side of bacon were good. I enjoyed my short rib breakfast burrito. It was generous in size, appropriately hot and had good flavor. My fried potatoes were very good. I enjoyed their coffee. The rub: I asked for fried onions with my potatoes. I was informed it would be an upcharge. Onions upcharged? Conclusion: Not bad. A tad bit expensive but not crazy. Would I go back? Not saying I wouldn't but probably just to try something off their regular menu.

I had the chilaquiles and my coworker had the beef short rib Benedict. Both were outstanding. The chilaquiles might be the best I've had outside of Mexico. The short rib was exceptional. The balsamic potatoes were excellent as well. Do not hesitate to come in here for breakfast or lunch.
