The painted window saying "Home of the Dirty Snowball" absolutely piqued my interest! LOL! Actually, it was that, plus the two giant nutcracker decorations out front that caught my eye. I'm a fan of (Christmas) holiday decorations, so I wanted to see what else they had, after spying some string lights through the window. Inside, it's like a wonderland of holiday cheer! Lights and ornaments and decorations everywhere! Sitting at the bar under the lights, I really felt like I'd discovered some secret bar under the Christmas tree! The staff were friendly, helpful, and quick with the libations! Kind of that "keep it real" attitude, but not in the rude way... in the honest and up front way! There is no food to speak of, save for a Chex-pub mix blend, but the drinks are why you want to visit! The famous Dirty Snowball is like a shake, but without ice cream, made with cocoa and related liqueur flavors (I can't remember what-all is in it, but it's GOOOOOOOD!). I highly recommend it! I also tried the Cleo's Trio, which is one part Dirty Snowball, one part Brandy Old Fashioned, and one part Suffering Bastard, I think? Not in the same glass! But, more like a flight. You get a little taste of Wisconsin or at least Appleton. Each drink is basically a full version, though, so you might need only one! I don't know what your favorite bar looks like, but if I lived in Appleton, this one would be mine. I would be in there at least once a week, if for no other reason the ambiance and the company. Great people, great drinks, and a legacy for holiday décor that I hope lives on forever!

When my friend moved away from Appleton, we threw her a goodbye party here because this was always her favorite bar. The group of us took up all of the tables and the staff was very attentive to all of us. The bartenders even played jukebox music just for us. The locals were as friendly as usual and chatted with some of us. What I love about Jim's Place is that it's laid-back (though not as much as, say, The Nickel) and you can still easily have a conversation with someone instead of yelling over the music. Also, the way the bar is set up makes it pretty easy to chat with people you don't know, which I like. Fun fact: I hung out with my professor here once!

My friend mentioned Shadows as she lives near it but never been there. This is an Asian bar, so when we walked in we were definitely the elephant in the room. Everyone was to themselves and there was a group of people that involved with singing karaoke. The bartender was super friendly and welcoming. Because we were willing to try something different and the bartender recommended some good Thai lagers, and we were drinking those for rest of the night. I ended up singing some karaoke myself because a guy came up to me and said, "It's your turn. I have to go to Milwaukee." Obviously that was odd since it was past midnight. The bartender said a lot of people come here to sing karaoke. There's no DJ. They have you connect to their WI-FI and connect to the Chromecast on the TV and then you play a song off of YouTube. It sounds silly, but kind of fun. I sang a couple of songs...everyone was terrified but still had a good time lol. I wouldn't hesitate to go here again, but not sure if I would have that same positive experience again.
