At first I really liked the office and decided to get clear aligners, which I now regret. I have never had any significant dental issues but experienced a tooth dying due to trauma from the clear aligner shifting my tooth too quickly. Dr. Matt was NOT monitoring my tooth as he did not check in with me when I went into the office to pick up the new trays. I had even made a comment to the dental hygienist that I had experienced a significant amount of pain in a tooth and was brushed off and no one ever followed up until I called the following week to say that something was wrong with my tooth. Dr. Matt first told me that my tooth probably died from a trauma I did not remember from childhood (even though I NEVER had problems with my tooth prior) then he went out of his way to call me and tell me that COVID probably damaged my tooth. I never received informed consent and had NO IDEA clear aligners could lead to this Either way I ended up paying a significant amount of money to get treated by an endodontist. I also never received any sort of apology or acknowledgment of what had been done to me. Over a year later and I absolutely regret ever going here and wish I could turn back time and go somewhere else. read more

I really liked the dentist, and got a great cleaning and good advice. However I only gave this place 2 stars because I'm mad they didn't tell me my insurance did not cover Dr. Matt (the one they gave me), but rather the other dentist only, until after I got a cleaning and a filling ($1,000+). I had to pay a significant portion of the cost. Since this place makes you pay full price and then get reimbursed by insurance later, I had no option but to pay. I was in town for SXSW 2011 when out of the blue, I chipped my front tooth on the Friday. This is what happened: 245pm - realised I'd chipped my tooth and looked on Yelp to find a dentist 250pm - found Authentic Smiles based on awesome reviews and rang them pleading for an urgent booking. I was met with really friendly service and a no worries feel 255pm - excused myself from my friends and walked down to their surgery 3pm - met the wonderful staff and immediately felt welcomed, comfortable and that they would be able to have me smiling again. Not only were they aware of Yelp, they had a funny but worthy promotion called Mouth X Mouth West which made me smile - these guys weren't old fuddy duddies! 4pm - Only one hour later and at a very reasonable price - I was standing back in front of my friends drinking a beer who were incredulous at the speed and quality of the work. Been a patient of Shane Matt for almost 2 years since my wife and I moved to Austin. Just to give you an idea of what a fun/nice guy Dr Matt is, when I went in to get Novocaine administered for all the dental work he was about to start I jokingly asked "do you guys have nitrous here?" to which he responded "No, but we have tequila!!". I'm big music fan of some of the same bands Shane loves and they have a lot of cool autographed framed concert posters and guitars that adorn the walls of the office. The music that pumps through the speakers is pretty good too. Overall, it's a nice clean space. I had to get all of my silver fillings replaced since they were pretty old. Dr Matt replaced all of them in one sitting with the newer tooth-colored filling material. He did a great job with the whole procedure. It was not a fun experience getting all my fillings replaced but Shane was very professional in being thorough and making it as painless as possible. My nerves took a little time to heal so my teeth were pretty sensitive to hot and cold food/drinks but Shane was always kind enough to speak with me when I would call in to ask any followup questions. I had done a little damage to my teeth by not wearing my night guard (to prevent grinding) and their dental hygienist set me straight a couple years ago and they filled in the notches in some of my teeth. I haven't missed a day wearing my night guard since and they can tell how good my teeth and enamel look! Just went in for a 6 month cleaning on 4/28/11 -first, I had an original apt for 5/3/11 and they were able to take me in the very day after I called. -Super flexible. The dental hygienist was very efficient and gave me a really thorough cleaning. I hate that scraper tool that feels so abrasive but for some reason it didn't bother me as much this time around. They took some quick x-rays, rinsed my night guard in their ultrasonic cleaner, gave me a new holder for the night guard, and some free samples of sensodyne toothpaste. Unfortunately, Shane was on vacation so I couldn't joke around with him or talk music but one of their dentists (Dr Owhadian) that checked my teeth and x-rays was very friendly. I also bought some more whitening bleach for $15 which is a very reasonable price considering the same tooth bleach costs double at my old dentist in New Jersey! They are conveniently located right by my office downtown so I only have to walk a few blocks but if I do drive there is a garage right in the building and the parking in it is free with the validation stamp they provide! read more

It's been 3 years (maybe 4?) with authentic smiles and I've now decided I'm breaking up. My very first visit was superb-- they used to have Dr. Sam, the most gentle dentist alive, who melted away all my dentist-fears. Unfortunately she left Austin to spread her goodness in the world volunteering or something incredible, I'm told ( perhaps imagined). The few visits following her departure were fine. Massive billing error when they confused me with another patient with the same last name. But hey, sh*t happens. Then I noticed things were going downhill. Specifically the roughness of the hygienists. And the return of my dental anxiety. I've decided to move on from Authentic Smiles because they scare me (but to be honest, I'm a huge chicken when it comes to dental care). I'm going to find a gentle dental who won't scare the living sh*t out of me with hasty roughness and slight imprecisions when poking at my teeth with their torture stakes. Here's my break down: -1 star for being scary -1 star for recommending a 2-star ENT to fix my problems +1 star for the cleanliness of the office +1 star for the previous pleasantness of Dr.Sam +1 star for entertaining me with the most epic responses to the 1-star reviews here on Yelp, I've never seen anything like it. I am so happy with my new dentist and his staff. They are all so wonderful. I've always been uptight in the dental chair. At Authentic Smiles I was relaxed in a way I've never been before. From the front office to the chair for X-rays and cleaning, I had no problem relaxing. Dr Matt then came in, and he is amazing. He looks more like a movie star than a dentist. He has a great personality. He's very kind. Everyone in that practice is very kind and they all know what they are doing. I highly recommend Authentic Smiles. Latest technology, fantastic helpful staff, and very competent dentist. Nothing rattles Dr. Matt. Crowns are made in the office while you wait. They take great care to get you good and numb for any procedures - and for the most part you don't feel the needle. They will validate your parking (and you can get your car wash/detalied by Pronto Car Wash) while you are at your appointment. Dr. Matt & his staff also dedicate time to provide dentistry to HAAM musicians. Gotta love someone who gives back to the community! read more

Finding a dentist when I first moved here was rough, some only took specific insurances, others looked ghetto (this coming from someone who went to a place called Clinica Medica for four years). On top of that, I was in no rush cuz my teeth are rock stars and have been cavity free since I was the wee age of three (note the first couple years were baby teeth and also didn't rhyme with "free"). So after making some adjustments to my insurance and getting a nudge from Megan L. who rightfully found my lack of professional teeth cleaning to be disgusting, I found this place and it's perfect. I've only gone in for cleanings so I can't really speak for some of the more intense operations so you'll have to base your decision on other yelpers for those. As for the cleanings, the hygienists are all friendly, professional and easy to talk to (except, of course, when their hands and tools are in your mouth). The dentist I talked to was also friendly and didn't waste my time. He just confirmed my teeth were indeed badass and sent me on my way. What really differentiates this place though is that they use technology like all doctors and dentist offices should in this era. Texts and emails remind me of appointments, insurance forms were filled out online and when my company changed insurances and I neglected to tell them (my bad) they handled it over email quickly and professionally. No need for me to leave my cube to try to make a call in a huddle room or having to re-figure out how a fax machine works. So next time it's 2:30 (too th-hurty...oh yes, I went there) be sure to head to this place, you won't regret it! read more

Both procedures were exquisitely done and pretty much painless. The office staff is full of nice folks with great personalities. Normally I flinch multiple times because of sensitive spots from cold air or water and she was extremely careful and that didn't happen at all!! Due to a change in insurance, I was forced to leave my last dentist, who I really enjoyed. I did a lot of research and decided to give Authentic Smiles a try. I am really glad I did! Beth was my hygienist and took excellent care of me! Since I am over 7 mo. pregnant, I had a hard time laying back in the chair, due to the baby's pressure on my upper abdomen. Twice we had to pause the cleaning to let me sit up so I wouldn't pass out. Beth was so concerned that she even gave me apple slices out of her own lunch in an effort to help me feel better. Amber, my better half, chose this dentist primarily because of his connections to the community though HAAM and the "music scene," which is something we like to support when we can. While one can never be quite "happy" going to the dentist - after all, drilling, poking and whatnot isnt my idea of a great time, Dr Matt and his staff handle it with a low-key style that makes you feel like you arent in an old school fuddy-duddy dentist shop. The office is more or less brand spakin new, clean and fresh feeling. It seems to have all the high tech gizmos that one should have in a dental office. Parking is easy in the validated lot next door. Insurance wasnt a problem. Overall, I couldnt be happier with this dentist and have passed his name along a number of times to my friends who are into music and live around downtown. At this point, I couldnt recommend him more enthusiastically. read more

I have been going to Dr. Matt for 3 years now after relocating to Austin 4.5 years ago. In that first year and a half, I saw several different dentists in an attempt to find a new primary, and I can say without hesitation that Dr. Matt and his staff far exceed the kind of service and professionalism I experienced elsewhere. Dr. Matt's focus on neuromuscular dentistry sets him apart from other dentists I've seen, and his hygienists have always done a great job on giving feedback to improve tooth and gum health during a cleaning. I've had a night guard made, had a tooth bonded, and have had fillings done-- I've been pleased with all. Writing this with a numb mouth: Wonderful! Both Dr. Owhadian and her assistant (sorry I forgot her name!) made me feel very comfortable: completely non-judgmental of my horrible oral hygiene habits and infrequent dentist visits, very cheerful, and enthusiastic. Once I had let them know I was a nursing student, they took the extra effort to explain things to me that I would find interesting. Both my cleaning and cavity filling were as enjoyable as possible. I have had a lot of shots in my mouth throughout my lifetime as almost none of my baby teeth fell out on their own and I had to get all of them pulled. From these experiences I feel like I have the authority to say that Dr. Owhadian knows how to give a minimally painful shot. Furthermore, when I was making my cleaning appointment there was some confusion with my insurance but the lady at the desk, Nicole, was very patient with me. We played phone tag like a million times and I never heard impatience in her voice. I usually have a little bit of anxiety calling and making appointments but she was quite accommodating. I like the layout of the place, it's a comfortable setting and the colors are soothing. It seems like a happy and healthy work atmosphere for those employed there which I really value. Free parking? I had so many problems as a result of having in-house made veneers done by Dr. Matt. I walked in with superficial cosmetic issues and walked out with serious problems: an abscess that formed immediately after the veneer was put on, and an inflamed nerve that never went away until I had to get a root canal for that also (neither root canal done by Dr. Matt), and irritated gums that never fully went away until I had all the veneers replaced by another dentist with far superior and more natural looking lab-made veneers. In the beginning Dr. Matt seemed very friendly and passionate about his work, yet when problems arose, he was unresponsive, didn't seem to care or want to be bothered by it. While the office and staff are professional, I would NOT recommend this dentist to anyone. read more

Going to the dentist is about as scary as it gets for me but Authentic Smiles made my experience a very pleasurable one. To start, this location was super easy to find AND they have a parking garage, which was awesome not having to circle downtown forever to find metered parking! AND THEY VALIDATE PARKING, YAY! My first visit to Authentic, I was greeted at reception by a warm and welcoming face, Ms. Fae. She made my short wait sweet. The interior of this place was unlike any other dentist office I've been to, very hip and chill. Rebecca was the one who did my cleaning and she was very sensitive to my fears. She assured me there would be NO NEEDLES ;P The cleaning went quick and painless. The whole experience was a delightful breeze. I had mentioned while scheduling my appointment that I was interested in purchasing whitening trays, and I was pleasantly surprised that they were ready to take home the same day of my cleaning! All in all, it was a smooth experience and I really look forward to going back. Also, Authentic Smiles supports music and musicians in this town, which being one myself is something I really appreciate. Dr. Matt and his entire team are great - been going to them for 4 years now. My employees all go to him and now my fiance does. Everyone I know loves him. They always start your cleaning on time, Dr. Matt always gets to the point of what you need or don't need, he never upsells you on anything AND the place is very, very nice and clean. On top of that, Dr. Matt and his team do a lot of cool charity work for musicians in town (free dental, concerts during SXSW). He's just a truly good dude and a great dentist. read more

I had a very bad experience here. Matt was nice, but the high-school girls he has working for him can be very difficult. Basically I was overcharged and my insurance was billed for services that had not been performed. I couldnt even get an itemized receipt of what services my payment went towards. I ended up getting a refund, but it took a lot of work convincing the insurance specialist, she eventually had to call my insurance to verify the 100% coverage (for services I paid out-of-pocket for) and remove the false claims. It may have been a loss of communication between the front and back, but the experience turned me off to the place. I need to trust my dentist and his billing. My advice to you is to check your EOB's and verify what your portion really is. You may find you have some money owed to you. read more

This office will do everything to find a way to increase the bill. I went in for a general cleaning and Mr. Matt said he felt like I needed to have 2 old fillings re-done. I had no pain but you think he's the "expert". I explain that I'm a cash paying patient but no discount. Offices like this love people like me. So I go back and have my fillings re-done. Then I needed to have my gums checked because they look like they're receding. So I have that done - even though I am neurotic about flossing every day. Go back 6 weeks later for a check-up to make sure everything is going ok. They charge another $170 in addition to the $2000 I paid for everything else. It's been 2 months and I'm still having extreme sensitivity. Will be flying back to NYC to see my dentist there. I'm sorry to say that Dr. Matt is not good! I had to find out the hard way. Be Careful-he looks good & the office is cool-but I & 2 others have had bad experiences from his dental work. I had a "small filling" done and although Dr.Matt told me,"tis is a small filling-you'll be in & out of here in 10 minutes"-I have yet to be able to recover from the drilling he did on that tooth. My grandfather is a dentist and I have had fillings before-but not like this! I came back after 1 week due to cont'd pain on my tooth-and Dr.Matt said "you have a cracked tooth from grinding your mouth". I went to an endodontist who said "No you don't have a cracked tooth-the previous dentist exacerbated your nerve-or hit your nerve- when he did the filling on your tooth and you may need a root canal". $3500 procedure. I can still not eat on that side of my mouth and anything colder than tap water ZINGS pain so badly that I can barely stand it. I have to drink thru a straw & have had to eat very soft & pureed foods for 8 weeks. Be Careful!!! I would recommend anyone else! read more

Broke the veneer on my front tooth. I am not going to admit it was trying to tear open a conditioner packet in the shower. Never do this. Anyway...this was an emergency as you could imagine. While I love my regular dentist, Dr. Snow-a phone call to his office informed me I 'might' could get it glued back together on Wednesday afternoon. Um, three days with a sharp, broken front tooth? No can do. After a quick browse through the Yelp, I picked Dr. Matt and a phone call got me an appointment in 45 minutes. MINUTES. They said, "You may have to wait a bit in the office." No problem, at least it isn't THREE days! Actually, the wait was maybe 20 minutes if that. Dr. Matt fixed the veneer perfectly, gave me some options/prices on the more permanent repairs and I was out the door in an hour for less than $150. Seriously. How great is this guy? I've been going to AS for 4 years now and I was finally able to convince my husband (who hates the dentist) to go after my positive experiences. Dr. Matt is very gentle and truly an expert in his field PLUS he supports local musicians (hosts a concert every year!). The ladies at the front desk are super nice and welcoming and Mia is on top of things. Every hygienist is very professional and does a fabulous job. My teeth always feel so clean. Having recently moved to Austin, I'd been searching for a new dentist. When I broke a tooth recently, I had no choice but to risk it and find a dentist right away. I read nothing but great reviews about Authentic Smiles and their extended office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays make scheduling appointments so very convenient if you work full time! I've seen Dr. Owhadian twice now and I'm thrilled to say I've found a dentist I like and trust. She humored me by answering all of my questions and even took time to show me the machine they make crowns with and explained how it all works- did I mention they make their crowns in the office and you can be fit for a crown in the same appointment that you have the crown put on? The office manager, Jeannie is so thorough and addresses any and every question you could have before you can ask. The dental hygienist who performed my cleaning was also very thorough and she and Dr. Owhadian worked together to be sure they took a close look at anything that concerned either of them. You can even sign up for text message appointment confirmation and reminders, which I love. Their office is warm and welcoming- plus it's in the heart of downtown! From my experience with Authentic Smiles so far, the dentist experience doesn't get any better and dentists don't get more accommodating or thoughtful. I came to Dr. Matt because I had bite issues and, as a "friend" put it, I had "old man" teeth. Because of my bite issues (I was hitting end-on-end) my teeth were worn and chipped, plus they were discolored. Dr. Matt has completely reworked my bite and my smile - which has elicited many complements. I could not be happier with the results and on top of that, it has been a great experience. The staff - especially Fae and Laeni have been fantastic. They kept me informed on cost and kept me informed on the process throughout. I have been a patient at Authentic Smiles for about 3 years and thought it was time to write a review for this really wonderful office. I had a complete bite reconstruction because of bone loss in my jaw. Before undergoing this incredibly costly and time-consuming procedure, I did a lot a research and decided that Dr Matt's specialized education and experience made him the right dentist for the job. The process took nearly a year to complete because every tooth was fitted with a crown or veneer, and I had several 6-hour visits, as well as loads of shorter ones. I can't say enough great things about how Dr Matt and his staff handled this complex procedure, and all of my regular cleanings and a couple of root planings. I have always felt extremely well taken care of here, and the front desk staff, the hygienists, and Dr Matt have been conscientious about following up with me and filing my insurance claims. At the beginning of 2013 the office began requesting payments upon completion of services, but they always file the insurance claims immediately and I get a check from my insurance company within 2-3 weeks. This has been a smooth and transparent process for me -- the front desk staff are very efficient and friendly. I can highly recommend this practice whether you need extensive work or just regular cleanings. read more
