I'm not sure how I've lucked out having a great dentist for the past decade plus (Michael Nussbaum), then he connected us with Dr. Kunik for orthodontia. Our daughter had her pallet expanded and braces. My wife always took her to the appointments, so I didn't experience the office or Dr. Kunik then. The bill isn't cheap. The work is excellent. My daughter's teeth looked great and corrected what generations before her have struggled with. Then it was my turn. I finally listened to my dentist to go get Invisalign. Dr. Kunik is friendly and genteel. He's not just an orthodontist, he's an artist. You can see him envisioning your teeth moving and what has to be done to coax them into place. Then he recites an alpha numeric soup of instructions for the nurse to jot down and he's on his way. The staff is super sweet. I don't worry about who I'm sitting down with because they're all very capable. It's a mellow atmosphere and appears everyone is happy working there. I've never been frustrated by the office. My review for Dr. Kunik is perhaps a bit different than most. However, my story is like many others: wore braces as a kid, advised to wear a retainer, did not wear retainer, teeth shifted, then shifted more. Moreover, I began to chip my teeth because I had developed an edge to edge bite. Thus, for my own vanity, and the health of my dentition, I started to look for ways to remedy this. I lived in Arkansas at the time and saw several orthodontists. The consistent theme was that I would need 20+ attachments. I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of attachments, and I started to look around. A rudimentary recon started by googling "Invisalign without attachments". To my surprise, there was only one practice that came up: Dr. Kunik. It was, however, 500 miles away. Nonetheless, I decided to check it out. I called, explained my unique situation, and to my surprise was met with a welcome and supportive team member. She explained it was uncommon to have people come from out of town given Dr. Kunik's reputation, and set me up with an appointment and several weeks later I made the drive to meet the team. Dr. Kunik and his team are exceptional. I am a surgeon, and I honestly feel like I changed my own bed side manner after interacting with Dr. Kunik given his unique gift at making me feel at ease. I felt kind of embarrassed to engage in medical tourism in an effort to get the best care, but they made me feel completely comfortable and at ease. He explained his plan and we set it into motion. Most importantly, he said he could do so with no attachments. About a year later I returned to Dr. Kunik for my refinement trays. I told him that I was actually really happy with where we were and I was OK with stopping treatment now. He stated that while he appreciated the marked improvement, he wanted to strive for perfection and didn't want to stop until we fine tuned our way into perfect alignment and symmetry. I've got a few more trays to go, but my results are so crazy. I look at the before and after pictures and I just wish I had done it sooner. When I first looked into Dr. Kunik's reviews myself, I saw numerous 5 star reviews with one or two non-five star reviews. The consistent criticism within that small sample size was that Dr. Kunik's work was more expensive than others. This was - in fact - true for me as well. He was nominally more than my other two consultations. I would just say this. If you would like cookie-cutter, thoughtless approach to treatment with average results, don't go to Dr. Kunik. There are other places that can do that, and sure, I suppose you can save a couple hundred bucks. But if you understand whats at stake, you understand what an impact your smile has on your first impressions, you want a boutique level of personalized care with a team that is top to bottom second to none, and you want to entrust your outcome to a perfectionist (Hint: yes, you want this), then go see Dr. Kunik. In the end, I traveled from Arkansas to Austin to get high quality care. During the continuum of our care, I moved to Chicago, but still returned to Dr. Kunik to fine tune and perfect my teeth. While the office runs like a well-oiled machine, Dr. Kunik himself is too busy to develop individualized treatment plans that take facial structure into account or listen to/address concerns after treatment. When my daughter's braces were removed, her top front teeth were moved too far up into the bone and only the bottom 1/3 of her teeth showed when she smiled. He effectively shortened her front teeth and inverted her "smile arc" resulting in an unattractive smile. Dr. Kunik has not listened to our concerns (he stood in the doorway of the exam room and would not look at her before and after pictures with us) and instead recommended we see a cosmetic dentist, saying the problem is the shape of her teeth. It is obvious from her pictures that the problem with her smile is not the shape of her teeth but the placement of them, with too little of the teeth showing. At our next appointment Dr. Kunik literally told us to come back in 6 months and we would "get used to it". The cosmetic dentist we saw recommended we lengthen her teeth with bonding to improve the appearance of her smile. Basically we paid Dr. Kunik $6500 to push her teeth up and out of her smile and now we will need to pay a cosmetic dentist $5000 to add length back to them to make her smile pretty again. read more

There is a reason Dr. Kunik is the highest ranked Invisalign provider in Austin. He is an ortho artist; his attention to detail and care is unprecedented in my experience. I found Dr. Kunik after a terrible 1-week experience having old fashioned braces with a dentist who told me my open bite case was complicated and would take 1.5 years to fix, with rubber bands. The open bite had been caused by a night guard that sat only on my front teeth. From the moment I entered the office, I felt at ease. They took my scans and assured me that my messed up bite was no match for Dr. Kunik. When I met him, I felt his confidence, enthusiasm, genuine love of orthodontics, and patient care. He said he could fix my bite and that "it'll be fun!" Because of my past experience, I was concerned I would need many buttons and rubber bands. I couldn't believe it when they said I would need neither! After only a few months, my open bite was corrected. The entire Invisalign process with Dr. Kunik took a little over a year. I never needed buttons or rubber bands either. It was easy with the scan box and always a pleasure to see him. During visits, he would meticulously recontour my teeth, making minimal corrections that made a big difference, and he would make sure that my teeth were sitting nicely in my bite. They treated him so well, with so much care and attention, and never charges us for other of those visits. Our son should be ready for braces in the next 6 months or so and we wouldn't consider looking anywhere else. In addition, I recently lost my retainers. I asked them about potentially doing some straightening work on my teeth, as I had braces decades ago and even though I've worn my retainer all these years, my teeth have shifted a bit. However, rather than charging me thousand of dollars and putting me on a full treatment plan, they looked at my teeth and said I didn't need it and all I needed was a set of new retainers. Kunik Orthodontics truly cares even if you aren't a patient! We were visiting family in Austin for Thanksgiving, and on the day before, our 13 year old breaks his bracket. We tried fixing it ourself, and we made it a LOT worse. It was 530pm, and we must have called more than 20 dentists and orthodontists all over Austin, and of course, none were still at the office nor willing to help. It was getting so uncomfortable for our son that we went to an urgent care, and although they couldn't help, the doctor told us her daughter goes to Kunik and gave us the phone number. We got the answering machine, which gave us an emergency number to text. Gerri called me within 2 minutes. She asked us to text her a picture, and she said she would call the staff to see if anyone was still in town. Within 10 minutes, she called back and said Nina was going to drive and meet us at the Westlake location to help us. Nina drove nearly 45 minutes at 7pm the night before Thanksgiving to meet us, for essentially a 1 minute fix. She even fixed another wire that didn't look good to her on another tooth, and she wouldn't allow us to pay anything for her time! My son now wishes he could go to Kunik for his Orthodontist, and although that would be a far drive from California, I can understand why he feels that way! For years I was uncomfortable smiling because my teeth were getting worse and worse. After years of being afraid to try Invisalign, primarily due to the bone loss, I decided to go see Dr. Kunik. Dr. Kunik is a pro. My son recently had his braces removed and now my daughter is starting her treatment. From the moment you walk-in, check-in is a breeze and the staff is very friendly. You never have to wait more than a couple of minutes before they bring you back. Dr. Kunik meets with every patient and tailors their treatment plan according to what they need. My son had gaps, a bit of an overbite and his alignment was a bit off. During his treatment, Dr. Kunik took his time to make sure everything was just right and in place before removing the braces. Now his smile is perfect. My daughter has popped a couple of her brackets (she's still getting used to what she can/cannot eat) and his staff has always been very accommodating in getting her in quickly to get them fixed. She always has a ton of questions and the staff is so kind to answer them all, even showing her models and explaining in-depth why they do what they do. It's hard to write a review about an Orthodontist without briefly examining the concept of Orthodontics in the first place. Here you are, some hapless guy/girl with teeth ranging from not-perfect to summer teeth (some are here, some are there...). Then you've decided to not only part with several thousands dollars to fix this particular malady, but you are willing to undergo possible painful treatment in exchange for said hard earned money. Really it seems a little masochistic at best, reminiscent of the "holy-mouth-men" described in MIner's famous article about the "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema" http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Body_Ritual_among_the_Nacirema So now you are asking yourself: 1. Is this even worth it in the first place? 2. This invisalign gig seems pretty good, should I just go to a regular dentist that offers it on the cheap or spend the extra money to see an Orthodontist? 3. Who is the Kunik guy and why should I see him? Let me address these in turn 1. Yes, getting your teeth straight is definitely worth it. In fact it's so easy and relatively quick you are going to feel like an idiot for not getting it done earlier. The good news is that now invisalign is cheaper and easier than ever so there was some benefit to waiting. Your smile is one of the first things people are going to notice about you, and crooked teeth stand out (even more so after you have had invisalign and start noticing people's teeth). You are also likely going to find yourself taking much better care of your now perfect teeth. I have flossed daily since getting invisalign, something I struggled with before. 2. The process is pretty easy, but it's not going to be as simple as getting some new trays every couple of weeks. There will most likely be some sculpting, thinning, or other nice sounding but not-so-fun-to-undergo treatments. In fact, the only downside to my experience with invisalign was the "thinning" which involves essentially flossing your teeth with a metal file. The sound of a metal strip filing your teeth is about as fun you think it would be. It isn't necessarily painful, but people say that about water boarding... It's also possible invisalign may not be for you, or that after your invsialign treatment, you may still need a more traditional treatment such as a permanent retainer or even full braces. I work as an Emergency Medicine Physician and I can attest to the importance of specialized training. Orthodontists I believe go through a 2 year residency training just in Orthodontics after Dental School (which is 4 years). So they have 50% more dental training that a general dentist and additionally those two years are all about getting your teeth straight. Moreover, all they do all day long is orthodontics. They are not dealing with cleanings, flings, etc. So although your general dentist may want to try to make some money on the side by getting into the invisalign gig, they are really not trained properly to do it nor have the experience necessary to know what the best treatment is. 3. I was referred to Randy Kunik by my Dentist, Tana Busch (an excellent Dentist if anyone is looking for one). Dr. Kunik is a consummate professional and his staff are equally pleasant to deal with. You can tell he really cares about your teeth and making sure you are happy with the final results. There is one charge up front and he promises to do whatever needs to get done to get your teeth straight, so you don't have to worry about extra charges afterwards. They get you in for your appointment quickly instead of most doctors' offices where you have to wait forever (really, what are they doing back there?). Dr Kunik has also recently opened a downtown office on Mondays which is much more convenient if you live centrally. So to summarize - yes go get your teeth straightened, yes spend the extra money and see an Orthodontist instead of a regular dentist, and I highly recommend Randy Kunik as that Orthodontist. read more

I went to Dr. Kunik as a kid for my braces.... he was quite the perfectionist and it showed. I can't tell you how many compliments on my smile I have received throughout the years =D At some point I lost my retainers and after years of not wearing them I noticed that my teeth were starting to shift. So to prevent them from shifting further I decided it was time to get fitted for some new retainers... and thought... why not go to Dr. Kunik again... he, after all, knows my teeth better than anyone. I was very excited to see him again! When I walked through his office door I kind of felt like a kid again... and then when I saw Dr. Kunik... I really did! Years later he looks exactly the same and is just as kind as ever! He took a look at my teeth, and because of the shifting, kindly suggested that I get Invisalign braces (clear treys) to correct the movement that had taken place due to my not wearing my retainers at night... he offered them at such a great price that I couldn't refuse. I was worried people would notice the invisalign braces, but after wearing them for 10 months no one has... and when I mention that i have them people seem surprised and then of course... some want to know how I like them, because they have been thinking of getting them too. I didn't realize how much my teeth had shifted, but now that I am on my last set of treys I can see what a huge difference they have made... I have perfect teeth again! So having been on both sides of it.... braces as a kid... and invisalign braces as an adult... I can easily recommend Dr. Kunik for both.
