Nothing but positive things to say about Dr. Jacobsen and Toothbar so far- and I've been coming here for 5 years. Facilities are great- new with modern technology and always clean. They have TVs in each station with headphones so you can watch Netflix during your cleaning and procedures- it makes a difference! They also have weighted blankets and pillows so you are comfortable. The lobby also features sparkling water, cold brew on tap, and espresso pods- too bad Im never kept waiting long at this practice! They are great at sticking to appointment times. They also offer 2 hours of free parking validation which Ive never gone over during a visit. My first experience was with Invisalign. I had done 18 months of Invisalign with another dentist and was not happy with the final result. Dr.Jacobsen helped me fix my bite and smile with an additional round of retainers AND was able to get my insurance to cover the fix-it treatment! It was amazing! Cleanings are always painless, and recently had my first cavity filling here (boo) but it was incredibly painless. I also like how they had identified problem areas in prior visits but didn't drill - I was able to correct my flossing and add in a fluoride toothpaste and not have to get any fillings. I've been coming to Toothbar for the past few years and have had mostly great experiences! The office is nice, modern, and centrally located. I love that they have noise cancelling headphones, overhead TVs, and are very mindful of people with dental anxiety. All of the hygienists I've seen have been excellent, and Dr. Barclay is great! I have not had any issues that others have mentioned (upselling, misdiagnosed cavities, etc) In fact, I haven't gotten a cavity since I started coming here! I needed to get some extensive dental work done recently (implants) and Dr. Barclay made me feel confident in the process. My only complaint is that it is really hard to schedule a cleaning here. You must schedule your next appointment 6 months in advance, otherwise, it's almost impossible to get on the schedule without a last minute cancellation. Luckily, for other visits I'm usually able to get in pretty quickly. I have had a mis-scheduled appointment here on accident, and feel that the visits can sometimes be rushed as there are so many patients at a given time read more

The actual dental providers are amazing and valet parking is clutch. The insurance issues is the reason they are getting this low review. There is a lot of miscommunication regarding the insurance they accept and it's been an absolute nightmare for the last year. One day they will tell you are covered and you only pay $29 and then 2 weeks later you'll get a bill for over $500 telling you you're not covered. Please call your actual insurance provider before doing business with this office. So sad because I thought this was my forever dentist. read more

They have really professional staff, high end equipment that makes things easier and everyone there is super friendly. This place makes used car salesman look like saints. First upsell just as i was sitting down on the chair. $700 nite guard. These are $100 online. Second upsell nitrous. they had it on my portion of the bill without me asking for it or it being discussed. Dentist seemed qualified but barely said two words to me. Assistant seemed new and forgetful. I quickly hit my insurance max and had to mostly pay out of pocket making me question if they were a true provider with my insurance which they told me they were. I moved to Austin about two and a half years ago and unfortunately had not found a dentist pre-pandemic. Toothbar was recommended to me (and they're female owned!) by a friend because I was in desperate need of a clean. They have the sweetest staff! I don't know that many people "enjoy" going to the dentist (especially after 2+ years), but they made sure I was comfortable and relaxed throughout. Dr. Jacobsen is also a straight shooter who won't try and upsell you on more than you need. I greatly appreciated her honestly and patience as I went through my questions and proposed treatment plan. I would highly recommend to anyone living in the Austin downtown area but make sure you book as far in advance as possible! They're busy! read more

It pains me to say this after so many years but I'm afraid Toothbar has fallen to the typical corporate greed which is also unfortunate because the two doctors that started this practice use to be a part of the same group that was around when Floss fell under for what seems to be the same thing. First of all Dr Barclay & Jacobsen I never see in the office anymore. Their newest doctor Dr Bakke seems aloof or personable and I think may be what drives this practice down. She was extremely adamant I had multiple cavities. Perplexed as I have never have any before I reached out for and 2nd and 3rd opinion. Which all turned to out to false/erroneous information from Toothbar from Dr Bakke and seems to be another ploy for money making. Had high hopes for you all but something has got to change. read more

First let me be 100% clear - Dr. Jacobsen is the best dentist I've ever had and I'm leaving this review after many, many year of great care bc the Toothbar Business Office is in dispute with my insurance company and notified me one week before my appointment that I could either pay out of pocket or find another dentist. After reaching out to my insurance company, I asked the Toothbar Business Office to consider a reduced rate so I could keep my apt for next week, while paying out of pocket and getting reimbursement (about $150 less for them the usual) - they quickly declined. No consideration for the fact that I'll need to find a new dentist and get an apt (when Toothbar themselves need 6 months advance notice for appointments) - just a bad decision made for their bottom line. It's a business, I get it. However I listen when a medical provider tells you that if the moneys not good enough, they're not interested. Profit over Patients - all current and future patients should consider this. read more

Quick Update: I have gone back a few times to Dr. Jacobsen. I've been really happy with my experience and I'd recommend Toothbar to anyone that is living near downtown Austin. Dr. Jacobsen has been extremely accommodating to my needs and I've felt great going into the office every time during COVID. Also, the up selling stopped happening after my first visit. Come here if you want to feel like you're in a car dealership. They are constantly trying to sell you extra services and products. Your dental health is second to that, and you feel it the entire time. They also told me they were partners with my insurance but I came to find out they are not in network (misleading staff). Called last year to get an appointment for a cleaning and exam, they said first available was in February. I said ok let's schedule it and also put me on the wait list for a cancellation! They called once and when I called back 10 minutes later they were booked. Now rolls around February and still no word so I called. Come to find out they never booked the appointment! I also had to keep repeating myself on what I needed done, then they said we can get a visit to get a game plan after I just explained I wanted a comprehensive exam! I guess you think I'm made of money or maybe my insurance just covers multiple exams! Either way I got a very incompetent vibe and now I'm back looking for somewhere to go! Complete waste of time! Love this dentist. I have Aetna and I haven't gotten my bill yet but will update when I do. I went in for a tooth ache, they were able to get my scheduled that same week as a new patient. They are pretty booked out for teeth cleaning so i would schedule ahead. The staff were really really nice and professional. The place was very clean and had TVs for you to watch while being worked on. They made me feel very comfortable. The gave me special treatment for being pregnant- which I really appreciated. Had multiple bad experiences. I resonate with all the other reviewers who say that they've never been told they had that many cavities in their life. I also take fairly good care of my teeth, and I've never had an adult cavity in my life. When I went there, they told me I had 7 to 10 cavities that needed to be filled. Which seemed absolutely crazy to me. Especially that I go twice a year and I've never had any issues. I had a friend who is a dentist out-of-state review my x-rays and they confirmed that a lot of the recommended treatments were unnecessary. On occasion, I had my teeth whitened. I had gotten through the first of something like three to five sets of whitening in the same day. After the first one, I was in so much pain. It was to the point that I was on the verge of crying. I have a fairly high pain tolerance and never cry. I asked them if there was anything that they could do to help me and they didn't even get the dentist to come look at me. To add injury to insult they would not refund me for majority of the treatment that I did not receive. I left crying because I was in so much pain. Another time they tried to sell me on fluoride toothpaste. As a medical provider myself, I know that this is also given as a prescription, and my insurance can cover it. Ive had multiple prior dentists in the past so this without issue or as the standard. I asked them if they could send me a prescription my pharmacy. They refused and wanted me to buy the markup price of the fluoride toothpaste in their office. My last straw was when I had set a dentist appointment six months in advance as you do. I had gotten multiple reminders that my appointment was coming up and I had confirmed it. The day before in a TEXT, they let me know that they are no longer accepting my insurance and making sure I was okay with paying $357. Find it crazy that's the cost for a regular checkup. They'd had multiple opportunity is to let me know when they were confirming my appointment for days and weeks before. And instead of calling me to inform me of this important information, they send it through a text. I'm sure if I had randomly cancelled on them less than 24 hours prior to my appointment, it would be unacceptable and I would incur a cancellation fee and/or couldn't get rescheduled for months. Similarly it's very frustrating to only be notified of it last minute when I have had to rearrange my work schedule and other obligations in order to keep this appointment for the past 6 months. It seems that there's a lot of dental practices now that try to make their offices, seem modern and chic, while they mark up their prices and recommend unnecessary treatments. They not only repaired my crown, but they gave me a kit to repair it myself I'm case it happens again while I'm traveling, and didn't even charge me. I have been a patient of Dr. Jacobsen before she and Dr. Barclay created their own practice and Dr. Jacobsen has always been an amazing dentist. So far, I have been a patient of this particular practice since mid to late 2019 and have not had any problems with the standard of care. Everyone has exceeded my standards and expectations. Early in 2020, I had a small cosmetic surgery to repair (or fill) a chipped tooth. So far, her work has passed the test of time, so I can at least attest to the amazing quality of her work. There was an incident related to billing for the aforementioned surgery but it was eventually resolved by working with their billing department or office manager. Problem: while the operation was covered by my insurance and apparently pre-authorized. I was still required to pay for the surgery up front. Then I was told to expect a reimbursement from the office when insurance eventually pays out. If I recall correctly, this took many phone calls to their office over 30-60 days to resolve. Hopefully the billing experience can be improved because the medical staff here is awesome! read more

They took an hour and a HALF to tell me at the end "We would like to do the cleaning next time - and refill all the fillings you have that you got a year ago [I'm 27 & went to a top dentist in San Antonio - moved to Austin a year ago].... -- "by the way you have a really great insurance so the good thing is you won't have to pay much (only $700 out of a $9000 bill)" This place is ABSOLUTELY insane and complete B.S. If you would like to have work done for absolutely no reason but to be charged.... Go here!!!! I'm having to pay $75 for this appointment (insurance is billed $1600) that they didn't do Jack Sh!! I have always hated my teeth and don't show them in pictures. A lifetime of strong black coffee and red wine and many years of smoking hand-rolled cigarettes didn't put me in a good place. Some people have "Run a marathon" on their bucket list, mine had "Get my teeth fixed." I hadn't seen a dentist in five years or more for even a cleaning, even though my insurance pays for twice-yearly cleanings. I am an avid brusher but have had some terrible experiences with dentists. I confided in a dentist once that I hated my smile and she offhandedly said that I we could talk about veneers someday but that they were thousands of dollars. I visited Dr. Barclay at the insistence of a friend who is an evangelist. She took my insurance and so I figured I should at least get my free cleaning. Since then, I have only spent about $200 out of pocket and I can't stop smiling. I've had whitening done now and she fixed a chip in my tooth (with no charge, just a surprise after some cavity fillings). It's actually only been a few hours since I saw her today and I just can't stop smiling at myself in the mirror (I usually avoid mirrors like the plague). I just look HEALTHY. My smile is sparkling. I don't remember what it's like to smile without wanting to hide my teeth. It's been a very confusing and exhilarating day for me. This changes everything. Thank you Dr. Barclay and staff (especially Debbie). Side note: today was my birthday and they decorated my room with birthday decorations! It was so sweet I melted. I love these guys. read more

I was excited to try Toothbar since a lot of my friends have gone here and had good reviews. I decided to go not just for standard dental hygiene but also to get Invisalign (again) for minor tweaks. I was very happy with my services and even did a whitening treatment once the short Invisalign period was over. Unfortunately, the whitening didn't do anything for me but that could just be my teeth. The office is clean, high-tech (Bose headphones + Netflix), and the staff is friendly. The reason I'm giving 3 stars and discontinuing my business with them is because I was turned away when I was late to an appointment to re-glue my permanent retainer. I live in south Austin, there was unexpected traffic and I was 12 minutes late. I received a text from the office 9 minutes after the appointment start time to confirm I was still coming. I am not sure what happened in the 3 minutes from that text to my arrival but they were unable to take me. I know I should've called in advance but I'm not sure if that would've changed the outcome. It is already difficult to make the constant appointments that are smack dab in the middle of the work day, but to finally get to the office and get turned away for a service they need to make right on was really upsetting. Especially after paying thousands of dollars to this office. Furthermore, a couple things that didn't make sense to me that now seem like unnecessary upselling. 1- the night guard. I grind my teeth at night so they recommended the night guard. This cost me $695. I NEVER wear it because I also have a strong retainer after my Invisalign treatment. There is no use for it and I should have been offered as a secondary option but not as a simultaneous use. 2- The permanent bottom retainer I have was only glued on in two spots (apparently per Invisalign's recommendation??). To no surprise, it fell off. I called in asking to just get a regular retainer and she said it would be $550 and Invisalign would supply me w 4 or 5 trays. I don't have 4-5 trays for my upper retainer so not sure what I paid for there, but I requested the bottom retainer just be re-glued and unfortunately was late to my appointment and turned away. I understand businesses have to keep to their schedules, but not having an ounce of flexibility or understanding for patients who spend thousands with them after sitting in 30min of traffic was enough for me. I also know I have waited 15min in their waiting room for an appointment I was on time for, multiple times. This is likely a one-off and most people won't have this experience but it was worth posting. read more

Probably the best dentist office I have been too. I go ever few months for a cleaning and they helped me with my Invisalign. I don't have the same hygienist every time but it doesn't matter bc each one is just as nice and good as the one before. Also my dentist is very kind. I live in the Seaholm but had been sticking to my country doctor an hour away. I had 4 brown teeth so I barely smiled. they were bottom ones. my dentist never gave me a plan or a solution at my cleanings. I went to the tooth bar and came home with no brown teeth. the technology I think they are still getting used to. I requested the gas first appointment and they treated me normal. actually saying of course. instead of the other one acting like im a crackhead. I tell me friends now the dentist is like a spa and Im gay and the dentist is hot married girl but so cool and beautiful. Now all the sudden you look forward to the dentist. I've had a huge anxiety of dentists for years, after one visit to the Toothbar - I'm all in. Dr. Lauren and her team were awesome from the time you enter till exit. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable creating a comfort level that a normal dentist office just doesn't have. Front Desk - easy setup using an iPad gets your info into their systems fast and efficient. The waiting room is relaxed quite and comfortable. Another call out is the background music which as hip but relaxing. The office is state of the art from x-rays, teeth whitening spa room, patient rooms and other cool features you won't find an Dr. X Dentist's office. My first office visit was for a gum issue which Dr. Lauren addressed and had me in and out with zero discomfort. I've found me new Dentist in Austin. Teeth cleaning scheduled. I emailed so mainly dentists and the moment I woke up, the office had already emailed me they had an opening in an hour if I could make it. I think anytime anyone thinks of a dental office, it's not associated with a pleasant feeling. This office has truly changed that perception for me and my two teen children! Parking is great (it's in a garage and they validate), and the office is beautiful inside! Debbie booked our appointments and has been beyond helpful with insurance and always making us feel so welcomed, as well as the other front office members. Dr. Barclay sees my daughter and I, and she is by far the best dentist I have ever had. She's so knowledgeable, sweet, and truly cares for us as if we are her own family! Toothbar has a lovely atmosphere equipped with TVs and Bose headphones to help you relax. However, I, as well as other dentists, strongly believe that they over diagnosed cavities in my mouth. On my first visit I was told that I needed 9 cavities filled after only have 1 previously filled in my lifetime. I am someone who regularly brushes so I was shocked and concerned by this news. I went ahead and had them refilled. Two weeks later one of the fillings popped out of my mouth and caused so much pain I couldn't eat cooked rice. Thankfully, they replaced that filling with now charge. However, now 2 years since my last visit I've had multiple dentists identify that 3 of my fillings have broken since and state that they believe Toothbar was simply trying to put as many fillings in my mouth as possible. I have pretty good dental insurance but the 9 fillings ended up totaling around $400+ out of pocket for initial fillings and replacements throughout the years. I would strongly advise against visiting Toothbar. read more

Dr. Barclay and her team are a very professional and compassionate bunch that go above and beyond to make your experience a relaxing and as enjoyable as possible. At my initial cleaning, Dr. Barclay laid out a plan for my teeth and explained all the options available and helped me find the best one for my needs. I was given a list of pricing as well, so we were all on the same page. She laid out my entire care plan after my first visit from straightening my bite, fixing a filling, and protecting my teeth due to grinding. She recommended invisiline and the office worked with me to allow a payment plan. When I had finished my invisiline Dr. Barclay had recommended I have a filling that might need to be repaired , but, because the alignment was so much better that didn't need it to be done. I was in the middle of relocating to Colorado and she was able to make sure all of my treatments were completed and my new night guards with meet me in Colorado! I will definitely return for cleaning and hellos when I'm the Austin Area! She is a genuinely exemplary Dentist, I couldn't recommend her and her team higher, truly the best dental experience, I'm so grateful to have found her with a recommendation of a friend. Having just moved to Austin and in need of a bi-annual checkup, I made an appointment for this morning Toothbar on the recommendation of a friend who was impressed when he visited a few months ago. Based on my experience, Toothbar certainly deserves its great reputation! Since I already gave my contact and insurance info to the office when I made the appointment over the phone, the only thing I had to do when I walked in was take a picture of myself for their records. The waiting area was very clean and even provided water and coffee for patients while they waited. Luckily, I didn't have too long of a wait as I was taken back after not even 5 minutes of checking in. The dental hygienist that I saw was very friendly and explained everything she was doing during my visit. Also, as other reviewers have noted, you're able to watch Netflix during your cleaning. Afterwards, Dr. Jacobsen came in and went over the x-rays and pictures of my teeth with me and answered any questions I had. Overall this was a great experience! Between the relaxing atmosphere, the great rapport I had with everyone I met, and the level of care I received, I highly recommend Toothbar to anyone who's looking for a dental practice in the Austin area! As an aside, the only thing that I would caution people on is that you're only given one hour's worth of parking validation for the parking garage. Since this garage charges $3.00 for every 20 minutes (with a daily max of $30), I still ended up paying $6 after the validation. Granted, this is cheap for almost 2 hours' worth of downtown parking during the business day, but it's still an additional expense to keep in mind. read more

I stopped in for a teeth whitening and received the best treatment possible. I am extremely sensitive, having had five series of gum surgery many years ago, but wasn't sensitive during or after the treatment. Dr. Barclay and Dr. Jacobsen's assistant performed the treatment today with such ease and I was very comfortable the whole time. I have never felt better and I love my, now, white teeth! I have been hesitant to go out during the pandemic, but this entire experience felt so welcoming and safe. I have been trying to find a new dentist and I will for sure be sticking around here! The staff was amazing and I felt informed the whole time. Someone from the front desk came in with a price sheet for me telling me what my insurance would and would not cover, which was super helpful since I needed some extra work done.
