The experience from the minute you walk in is different than most dentist offices. There is music playing, they greet you with water and a smile. You get a hand or foot massage while your teeth are cleaned and you never wait. The hygienists I've had (usually Kara) are extremely knowledgeable and gentle. I recently had a new crown made and inserted and had a temporary veneer put on during the same appointment. The veneer had fallen off right before Christmas (it was from another dental clinic in another state) but when I called the day after NewYear's, I got an appointment the next day. The color and size matching on the temporary veneer is great, I was concerned about the crown because I had never had one before, but the tooth it was installed on was held together by a lot of silver fillings and really needed the crown. I have no issues a day later with the fit. bite or sensitivity, and was pleased that the crown is permanent and could be made in the office. Dr Sweeney gets an A+ !!! My wife had seen him, I had not - until I had a minor emergency. I walked in, he saw me, diagnosed the problem, got me a oral surgeon appointment the following morning. What might had gone from a BAD lower jaw infection to something much worse was avoided. I had not seen a dentist in a couple of years when I began having pain in the right side of my lower jaw. Pain was at a level that I could ignore, so I did for a several weeks until one weekend... my wife insisted I do something about it. So that Monday morning I showed up at Austin Dental Spa. Many years ago, I went to Dr. Mark for dentals care. My entire family has seen him and the care has been good. I recently moved back to Austin and when a side filling popped off my molar, I sent a message to Austin Dental Spa asking if they took insurance. The short answer (which, even though I asked 3 different people, I never received) is NO. I really wish at least one person had just answered me directly. So this is my $400 tooth part... which popped off again. Probably no big deal for the average patient. For me, however, it is a very big deal. I've never been excited to go to the dentist office but I sure look forward to going now! Dr. Sweeney and his staff are so nice and really go that extra mile to make you feel comfortable. Picture yourself getting a procedure from the dentist. It probably makes you cringe at the thought. Now forget every other dentist office you've been to because you won't be going back! Now, picture you're at Austin Dental Spa. You're in the chair getting a procedure done. A staff member asks if you would like some laughing gas. You say, "hell yes" and maybe throw your hat in the air (if you have one)! Then...you are faced with a very hard decision. Hand or...foot massage? Just pick whatever comes to your mind first. Then relax and melt into that chair while some oldies songs play in the background. Are you in heaven? Maybe? But then the procedure is over and the experience ends. Do you have to go back to reality? Can you live there? Soon you find yourself eating candy, not flossing, and skipping brushing (the horror) in hopes of getting cavities because 6 months till another cleaning seams too far away. Unfortunately, my recent experience with Austin Dental Spa did not meet my expectations. My scheduled appointment for my cleaning went extremely well. Cara was superb in her attentiveness to my sensitivities, and I appreciated her professionalism and kindness. I was notified that my previous dentist was no longer with the practice, and another dentist would be assigned to work with me. However, I was not informed about the change in the dentist who was scheduled to assess me for the next session until the last minute. I did not appreciate this unprofessional lack of courtesy or consideration, which did not allow me to choose service from someone whom I had not had the opportunity to research and vet to meet my needs. I have found this to be a pattern with Austin Dental Spa. From my initial visit and consultation with Dr. Sweeney, thinking he would service my dental needs to come back for my appointments and someone else is assigned. I do not like being treated like a " patient merry-go-round" since this occurred on at least three visits. This customer service practice is unprofessional and extremely disrespectful, to say the least. I will return for my cleanings if Cara is available. This review is long over due. In fact, when I went to write it today, I saw that I actually had started a review 2 years ago. This was my draft: "Wow, just wow. I've been so incredibly amazed by Dr. Slagter that I'm having difficulty finding the words to do justice to how awesome I think she is. The rest of the staff have all been fantastic too." That pretty much sums it up. If anything, I feel what I drafted above even more. Since I've been coming here for my dental care I could not be happier. I've had dentists and dental hygienists in the past who are not nearly as thorough, thoughtful, or as gentle and effective as they are here. I'm pretty particular and also quite inquisitive and ask a lot of questions. I've been met with nothing but patience and kindness. Caring for our teeth is so important. I cannot express enough gratitude for Austin Dental Spa's existence and the expert and beautiful work they perform. Dr. Slagter is exceptionally awesome and I also had one visit with Dr. Sweeney when she was out once which I enjoyed very much as well. I've been going to Austin Dental Spa for about 10 years. I had a major fear of dentists as a result of traumatic childhood experiences with military dentists so I'm always wary of new dentists. From my very first visit, Dr. Mark and the hygienist put me at ease, enough so that I have never been to another dentist. I've had a lot of stuff done over the years, so I can vouch that Dr. Mark does excellent work both routine and cosmetic. And the best part is he warranties his work for 5 YEARS!! I think they've actually lost some money on me because of the 5 year warranty. haha Everything is very high tech (digital x-rays, water laser drill, the machine that makes crowns while you wait) and they are very generous with the nitrous oxide. They usually offer it to me as soon as I sit down in the chair (even if I don't need any work done that day!) and they are happy to turn up the nitrous and turn down the oxygen when I request it (which is most of the time haha). Everyone who works there is really personable and they remember details about your life even if you only see them twice a year. Amanda at the front desk is super sweet. I've had lots of "emergencies" come up over the years, and Amanda always finds a way to fit me in the same day. My hygienist Candice always remembers my vacations and that I prefer one massage therapist over the others. Dr. Mark's chairside manner is amazing. He tells some stupid jokes but they are funny for the most part. Even if your teeth are a mess, he has a way of making you feel good about things. He has such a positive outlook on life that you'll feel happy even after he performs a root canal on you. The only thing I don't like about Austin Dental Spa is the music they sometimes play ...but with enough nitrous, I hardly notice the crappy tunes. :) read more

Have you ever looked forward to a dentist visit? OK, that may be taking it too far, but not by much when you become a patient at Austin Dental Spa. The ambiance is soothing and, seriously, you're offered a complementary hand or foot massage while you're in the chair to keep the soothing going. Every one of the staff, including front and back office, are beyond pleasant. They're fun to be with. The tech and work flow processes are state-of-the-art, resulting in very efficient visits. Yet, however efficient their team is, you never feel they are trying to rush you through. They are patient and thorough. Speaking of the team, they try to keep you with the same hygienist visit to visit. I saw Emily today and she was fantastic and painless. She had recommendations ready for the dentist that demonstrated exceptional knowledge and judgement. My dentist is Mark Sweeney, and has been since the dawn of time. He's the driving force behind the professionalism of this business and the reason it's such a positive place. He is a firm believer in pain free (as much as is possible) dentistry. He is skilled, extremely knowledgeable, supportive, kind, and funny. He has me addicted to his bad joke of the day and I beg for an encore. Very friendly staff, non judgemental. I have put off going to the dentist in the past because of the extent of damage to my teeth. In the past I've had dentist talk like I was not good enough to be there. Here it's quite the opposite. Dr Jordan and her staff has not only made me feel comfortable but wanted. Pros: * Outstanding cleaning, maybe the best I've ever had. Very well done on the part of the hygienist. I usually brace myself for a lot of suffering when I get a dental cleaning but this was excellent. Cons: * Much more expensive than I was expecting, no discussion/indication of price. * As noted above, asked for my insurance but did not indicate that they took my insurance nor verify my status before proceeding. This wasn't explained to me until after the process. I was told that I'd be responsible to the tune of $500 for XRays and a cleaning. Not okay. Other notes: * Everyone here is extremely nice. I think they take the whole notion of a "spa" treatment as trying to make you feel as welcome as possible. I was not prepared and found it odd. * You are going to get a lot of notifications. I just moved to Austin, and as someone who is SO scared of dental offices, I was relieved to find a dentist in town who does regular as well as cosmetic work. I have selected them for veneers, and after my first visit, I am so impressed by the team. I will update with photos, but if you're considering sedation dentistry or cutting edge work with casual/relaxed and genuine people, you must give them a call. I went here for a consultation about my TMJ/TMD several months ago. I thought I would have an examination by the dentist and see what he would say about my bite, and maybe learn what was the cause of all of my muscular pain. Instead of having an examination, I had to sit in the dental chair for over an hour explaining to the dentist everything I had been through with previous dentists(with loud music blaring; not great if you have a TMD induced headache) If you have TMD then you know that speaking for this length of time will leave you with horrible muscular pain. Once I was done telling the dentist everything that I had been through, he started to sell me his program, TruDenta, and sent me over to the treatment coordinator to discuss costs etc.. I was pretty annoyed because when I scheduled my appointment for my consultation, they never told me that they use Trudenta for their TMJ patients, and I asked a lot of questions before I scheduled. Trudenta is basically the same thing as neuromuscular dentistry. You can research it yourself. For me, I had already tried neuromuscular dentistry ( which was a painful disaster), and I wasn't interested in trying TruDenta. the cost of it seems like a giant rip-off,as well; thousands of dollars to have a splint made and come in all of the time to have your face muscles relaxed and have your splint adjusted. Thankfully I found another dentist, who examined me, and showed me in about two minutes that the orthodontia work I had done as a teenager had made it so that my jaw joint was not seated properly(it needs to be seated properly), and once the dentist guided my jaw back to wear it needed to be, it also revealed I have a class two open bite. Which has been the cause of my pain ever since I had orthodontia work. I am glad I didn't sign up for his Trudenta program, especially because the next dentist I went to diagnosed my issues immediately, and made me a splint that got me out of pain for a fraction of the cost of Trudenta, and I didn't have to come in all of the time and have their devices hooked up to my face to make my muscles relax. If you have TMD, make sure the dentists examines you, and make sure they are checking to see if your jaw joint is seated properly. This is done by you relaxing your lower jaw, and/or them guiding you, this enables them to see if your jaws/bite are aligned properly. You do not need to be hooked up to tens units and have massages to do this. I would also start with a really good prosthodontist because they really understand the jaw joint/occlusion/tmj. Mark (Sweeney DDS) has been the only one I have trusted with my dental care for over two decades (Unfortunately with a few years of absence on my part cuz I was out-of-country). I am a complete over-thinking wimp complete with extreme unfounded Odontokphobia. Not only did he fix my issue with the most professional and skilled loving hands, but also saved me from unnecessary procedures recommended by another doc in my in-network plan. I cannot recommend his practice more to anyone you wants a honest good looking doctor to take care of your dental needs....especially if you are a squeamish as me about dentist. And yes he still tells the same puns....which are not funny (still) but he made me feel at home.....as close as u can get with someone doing a major dental procedure.
