I have been a patient at Authentic Smiles for about 3 years and thought it was time to write a review for this really wonderful office. I had a complete bite reconstruction because of bone loss in my jaw. Before undergoing this incredibly costly and time-consuming procedure, I did a lot a research and decided that Dr Matt's specialized education and experience made him the right dentist for the job. The process took nearly a year to complete because every tooth was fitted with a crown or veneer, and I had several 6-hour visits, as well as loads of shorter ones. I can't say enough great things about how Dr Matt and his staff handled this complex procedure, and all of my regular cleanings and a couple of root planings. I have always felt extremely well taken care of here, and the front desk staff, the hygienists, and Dr Matt have been conscientious about following up with me and filing my insurance claims. At the beginning of 2013 the office began requesting payments upon completion of services, but they always file the insurance claims immediately and I get a check from my insurance company within 2-3 weeks. This has been a smooth and transparent process for me -- the front desk staff are very efficient and friendly. I can highly recommend this practice whether you need extensive work or just regular cleanings. read more

Dental phobic? This is the place for you! Everyone here is friendly and laid back, while also being professional and accommodating. They listened to my anxious prattle, encouraged me to listen to my iPod and generally made me feel good about how I need to take care of my anxiety. There was no 'sales pressure' to do anything, just suggestions and guidance about choices available. I'm going back within a month, which is huge for me! read more

Authentic Smiles is definitely *THE* place to go to have your pearly whites serviced if you're anywhere near central Austin. For starters, Drs. Shane Matt and Samera Ohadian are quite possibly the kindest, most ebullient, and highly skilled practitioners in town. They take the time to know you, identify what your issues are, tell you about the latest and greatest advancements in their field, and never try to sucker you into some unnecessary or overpriced service -- generally a very holistic but cutting-edge experience. You will see nothing but wide smiles all over this beautiful, clean, modern space, replete with local art, custom guitars signed by resident stars and starlets, and... if you're lucky... you just may be getting your root canal while some sexy crooner is singing and playing in the entryway atrium. It's pretty much a rock-star outfit all the way around. Perhaps most importantly, though, they are super flexible with different insurance and payment plans, so even if it looks like you can't afford to be a patient here, you're probably wrong. They work with tons of smaller providers, as well as MusicCares, HAAM, and other programs who support health services for creatives, artists, etc. Big grins all around! read more

I moved around a lot growing up so I've never really had the same dentist for a long period of time. I moved to Austin and have managed to stay in one place for the last 17 years. I've been going to see Dr. Matt for over 10 years now and if I moved again I'd have to consider flying in to have him oversee my dental needs. He takes his time with his patients and gives them his full attention. His practice is enriched with great employees. I love the fact that they will customize how you prefer to be reminded when you have an appt. or when it's time to get a routine cleaning. I request a text and email to help make sure I don't miss anything. And I honestly can't remember ever waiting in his office past the exact time of my appt. time. He's always approached my dental needs with great precision and he has the knowledge and skill to make anyone's smile better. I also value his secondary passion for music. He supports programs that help musicians get the financial help they need to afford the important dental care we all need. Go see him. It will become very clear that he's not only one of the best in his field, but he's also a kind and carrying person who takes great pride in everything he does. read more

Appointment was on time as scheduled, nice offices, very friendly and great cleaning and check up. What more is there ?

Once again, Ginger does not disappoint. I went back for my second visit today and Ginger was again ready and waiting for me, early. She cleaned my teeth for a full hour and they came out looking immaculate! I have periodontal disease and almost all my pockets had shrunk by a number, that is a big deal, and I believe it due mostly to Ginger's thoroughness at the last cleaning. On top of all this, the facility is beautiful, with validated parking and the cost is very reasonable. I do have to mention that I have dental insurance, but it isn't that great. I don't think I will ever go to another dentist by choice. read more

Dr. Matt is the most incredibly competent dentist that I've ever had. i am lucky to have found him. He is the very first dentist who had the sense enough to send me to an allergist after years of telling dentists that I was allergic to xylocaine due to a childhood reaction. He not only is practical and easy to be around but he also a lot of talent with cosmetic dentistry. In just under an hour and 4 fillings, he made the bottom row of teeth look brand new. His office has a convenient downtown location with parking validation in the garage next door. The music in the background makes a trip to his office doubly enjoyable. I would like to share a few things that made my experience with Authentic Smiles less than ideal. 1. I was told that my procedures would most likely be covered by my insurance. They were not. I have now paid full price on the deep cleaning and on my wisdom teeth extraction (~$1500). The dentist and dental staff continued to try to upsell me on things that were very clearly not covered by insurance when they knew I was trying to get basic procedures done. 2. although I emailed and called a day in advance, I was not given any overview of what the extraction procedure would be like until 2 minutes before the appointment. I was not told that I would be conscious for the procedure 3. So much anesthesia was used to numb my mouth that I have had trismus for 2.5 weeks now and cannot fully open my mouth 4. I was prescribed very mild medication after my teeth were removed and was in serious pain over the following three days. 5.-I was told that the dental hygienist would check in on me, she did not. I had to reach out to her 6. - I was not informed on the day of my procedure (Thursday) that the dentist would be leaving town the next day. This meant that when I was in extreme pain the following day, the hygienist could do nothing for me in terms of prescribing medication. I had to wait through an entire excruciating 3 days (Friday + weekend) to get back in and get the right prescription for my issues Looking back on the experience, it was a series of unfortunate misses and I would have a hard time recommending this place to someone else. I only gave this place 1 star because they did not warn me that my insurance did not cover Dr. Matt (the dentist they recommended to me). I paid $1500 out of pocket. Since this place makes you pay full price and then get reimbursed by insurance later, I had no option but to pay. This place would be better if it warned patients of this in advance or offered a discount to patients with coverage that was not accepted. One pro was that they got me in quickly. read more

Dr. Shane Matt has done a brilliant job building his rock n roll brand of dentistry in the heart of the RnR capital. That's not to say you're going to trash a hotel and and be flanked by loose women and a new entourage after your dental work, but it does help knowing that this practice is conscientious of the local community. His objectives would fall short if it weren't for a noticeable investment in state-of-the-art technology and an exceptional staff. Dr. Samera Owhadian is an top-notch practitioner I'd gladly recommend to my family and friends. And contradictory to previous reports, his administrative team rocks. read more

Hands down, best dentist in Austin! I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Matt and his staff: great location, huge breadth of services, knowledgeable staff, amazing quality of work! Whether you are looking for a great general dentist (cleanings, x-rays), cosmetic dentistry (veneers, crowns, a new beautiful smile makeover), or the most technologically advanced TMJ treatment (bite guards, TENS treatment, etc), Dr. Matt will go above and beyond to make you happy. This office will file your insurance claims (I have been to several dentists in Austin that would not), help you with your payment plans, give you quotes, and do it all with a smile! Dr. Matt placed a crown over a front tooth, which previously had a root canal due to an injury. If you have ever had front-tooth work done you know how difficult it is to match a crown/veneer to a real front tooth. Dr. Matt is an artist that spent many hours making my new crown perfectly matched to my other real tooth. It looks amazing! I have not been to a dentist in 5 years (I know....boo!) but I decided I needed to get to one before I started having problems. I chose this practice because they are walking distance from my office and they accept my insurance. I had a lot that needed to be done as far as cleaning but the hygienist was great and Dr. Owhadian was even better. I have a couple of more appointments to take care of a cavity, get some fillings replaced, and whitening but it won't be long before my smile is what I want it to be. I recently had my first appointment with Casandra (hygienist) Dr. Owhadian last week, and I am sold! The entire staff was so friendly, professional, and incredibly kind. The whole experience was simple, fun, and made me wish I was going back to see them again soon :) From the moment I walked in the door, the entire staff helped me feel at ease and welcome for my cleaning and my xrays. I have recommended Authentic Smiles to everyone who will listen to me since last week. Honestly, if you are looking for a dentist check them out! Rebecca is an awesome hygienist who does a fantastic job on cleanings and the staff is very professional.

I went in a few years ago for a bridge after being told by two other dentists that an implant would not be possible. Dr. Matt said that the other dentists were wrong and that he could 100% for sure do the implant. I paid for it up front (nearly 4k) The first one failed. He told me I need a bone graft and did it without discussing the cost, I paid for it. The second attempt failed and again with the graft. Third attempt failed. Dr. Matt now says that another dentist will have to do the implant and says he will pay for it. I saw the other dentist in Dr. Matt's office and scheduled the implant. I then got a call from his office saying that I would have to pay another $1100. I disagreed and let them know that Dr. Matt said he would pay for it, they said that they would get back with me on the additional $$$$. They called me back two days later and said the additional cost to me would be $1475, I said no. The next day I called and asked for at least some of the money I had prepaid back, was told I would receive a call back. I never got the call. I called again twice and left messages, the calls were not returned. This process took 3 years, lots of pain, discomfort, and frustration with no positive results. I have moved on to another dentist who checked my situation carefully and said no to an implant. I now have the bridge I originally wanted at 1/4 of the price I paid for the implant I never received. Authentic Smiles still has my money and an attorney costs more to attempt to retrieve it. So in true rock and roll fashion they got their money for nothing. read more

It was going to be a long hard day to get my 15 year old son to go back to a dentist-not just today, but ever. He was in enough pain to "cave in" and go and I told him Dr. Matt could fix him up! Of course Dr. Matt did fix him up nicely (no more pain) and the root canal he ended up getting didn't even hurt! Not to mention that Kayla, the new assistant was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! She walked my son and I thru the entire process of what they would be doing and it made him rest at ease. I hope that I don't have to bring him back but if I do, I know now that he wont be reluctant. I just made this account so I could write this review. I HATE going to the dentist. No specific reason; I just don't like people digging in my mouth. So before I found a local dentist, I Yelped and found Authentic Smiles. Mistake. Office is nice; staff is nice. BUT I got two cavities filled. One of them was fine. The other is so painful I cannot even drink cold water. Not only has this happened to me, but also to two of my coworkers. Not sure if they are just inexperienced or what but I would not go there again. Update: went back in for a second time to get them to look at that one tooth and while they were still very nice, he just filed my tooth down more and said that sometimes it can be a bad cavity and can take time to heal. Then he gave me two concert tickets... I'm still not going back here but hey, who doesn't like free things? read more

This is my second year to be a patient at Authentic Smiles. Last year they adopted a new procedure where they collect payment at time of service, file with your insurance company and the insurance company sends a check for the amount of services. I was told that most dentist have adopted this new procedure although of the three that I contacted after this incident - I couldn't find one that implemented this. I followed up with three phone calls to inquire on the status. Not one call was returned. On the fourth attempt, Fae told me that she couldn't get through to my insurance company and assured me that the claim had been filed the day of service. That was their procedure. On October 15th I contacted Authentic Smiles again and I was told that they "always get blamed" for insurance bad practices. When I asked why my previous calls had not been returned - crickets. No reply other than they're busy. I went on line and filled out an on line request for someone to contact me. Both on-line inquires where ignored. Yesterday, October 23rd I again called and spoke to Fae on this occasion. She was dismissive and extremely condescending even though I maintained my patience. Again, I was told that it had been filed the day of service. I requested that we do a three way conference call and reach out to the insurance company. We went through the prompts and low and behold - Authentic Smiles HAD NOT filed my claim as they had told me UNTIL I spoke to them on October 15th. Mistakes happen that was not the point. The rude and dismissive way I was spoken to was the issue. The way my inquires and phone calls were ignored, that fact that I was lied to on multiple occasions, bullied and spoken to in such a condescending matter was the issue here. Not that the staff had made an error. Error's happen - It was the lack of Customer Service and the treatment. I asked Fae if I could speak to Dr. Matt. After a long hold - Fae told me that Dr. Matt would NOT speak to me. If I wanted to speak to him, I was told to make an appointment. I'm a two time cancer survivor and a vested member of this community. I've had my share of waiting rooms, dealing with insurance companies and staff of doctors. I have never, ever been treated, dismissed or spoken to so disrespectfully in the way this simple inquiry turned into such a disaster. This is not about an simple error it's the way this was handled or lack of. I kept my composure, didn't raise my voice or tone. Results are not resolved this way. Shame on you Dr. Matt - Shame on you! I've never written a review -- ever and I hope this is the last one. My next step is filing a complaint with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners which is already in the works. You simply cannot treat people like this. Doctors and their staff are suppose to be caring individuals. Perhaps you're in the wrong business Dr. Matt? Perhaps. Mary - In response to your comment on my review- Your reckless veil of threat and the audacity to say that HIPPA prevents you from exposing me further proves the unstable reckless environment and the unlawful unethical instability of the staff at Authentic Smiles. The above statement is the truth and I stand by it and my review. I never ever yelled or raised my voice when speaking with the staff. The mere idea that HIPPA law prevents you from exposing me should be a red flag for anyone to consider when selecting a dentist. A very careless and unlawful statement to threaten someone with. Should the public fear that a review would cause them to think that any negative feedback will be threaten by "exposure" if not for a HIPPA law in place? I was a patient here for a couple of years and had several bad experiences. First, I was told that I needed a night guard. I had to go back 3 different times to get molds made, because they kept not fitting properly. Secondly, I was told that my 2 front teeth were loose and that I needed Invisilign. This sounded suspicious to me, so I got a second opinion, and sure enough, neither of those things turned out to be true. I also didn't need the $500 night guard. Finally, when I stopped going to them, they tried to double charge me for a visit a year and a half prior. This did not make sense because they charge at the time of the visit. My opinion of this practice is that they try to sell you things that you don't need and are out to make as much money as possible. Also, my insurance, which covers annual cleanings, does not cover them at this practice. read more

Dr. Matt and his staff helped me in what had become a very stressful situation. I had another highly rated, experienced dentist in Austin perform a crown operation in which the resulting crown was obviously incorrectly fit. The result was that after waiting nearly a month with a temporary crown in, I had to go through the entire process again. I nearly went through with it when I found Dr. Matt. His office is not only conveniently located downtown, near where I work and live, but I was amazed to find his office has technology decades more advanced than any dentist office I've ever visited - and I've seen some fancy dental offices in San Francisco and New York. Dr. Matt is literally helping push the forefront of dental technology, and doing so in a way that makes your life better. Instead of having to wait a month for a new crown to be made, I entered his office and left with a new crown made before my very eyes by a CNC machine that milled the crown out of a block of porcelain matched to the color of my surrounding teeth. The advanced imaging tools he has available also caught a small well that had formed in the gum next to my prepped tooth that no other dentist could have possibly seen with their naked eye. Dr. Matt and his office aren't just the safest, smartest bet to keep your smile healthy. They also run an amicable and approachable office. Everyone in the office is friendly and helpful. This was probably the most exasperating dentist visit I've had. I made an appointment for a routine cleaning, went into the office, cleaning began and ended and not until it was time for me to check out was I told that the office has a policy of making customers pay the costs up front and file a claim with insurance. I've never been told that by any sort of doctor so I was taken aback, but what can you do, so I paid. What if I had gone in for a more extensive procedure? I would have had to pay thousands upfront. Very deceiving. When I called a week later to check on the claim status I was told that the employee in charge of filing the claims had gone on vacation and didn't get to it until a week later. So frustrating. Turns out my insurance didn't even cover all of it because if a certain part of the procedure. Again, all this should have been discussed with me. The office is clean and staff is nice enough, but in this day and age and in a city as big as Austin, do yourself a favor and go to a dentist office with the capacity to handle the insurance work on their end, which is the norm. Don't waste your time and money...it's been 3 weeks since my procedure and I still haven't received my reimbursement. read more

On 9/16/2012 I wrote a favorable review of Dr. Shane Matt at Authentic Smiles when he offered to repair for free a crown that he had put in my mouth that had fallen off. He was apologetic and did some extra work to make it up to me. Immediately, that replaced crown started causing me terrible pain and he made me a mouth guard and I went back to see him about it several times (driving 2.5 hours from my home to Austin each way, numerous times.) Finally, after many visits and much pain and many misdiagnoses Dr. Matt told me that I needed a root canal. I wondered why it took all those visits and two crowns before he noticed that. But I continued to drive to Austin and got additional dental work including another crown that immediately became sore and swollen. I went back with the terrible pain and infection (it was hot and swollen) and he said I should have had some work on my gum before I got the crown. He had put on the crown less than a week earlier. He acted surprised, and his assistant was in the room and confirmed that he had just done that work. He refunded the $850.00 partial charge for that crown. I went to another dentist and he was shocked at the shoddy work. I had to have both teeth pulled that Dr. Matt had crowned. I had financed it and told Care Credit that his work was bad and he had caused me to have to have those two teeth pulled. (I'm having implants.) Care Credit contacted Matt and informed him that I didn't want to pay for his shoddy careless work and he wrote them the most horrible letter about me. Insulting me personally and telling all kind of lies and untruths about his work and my many visits. He lied and made up details that had not happened. He may have a groovy office and but he is a terrible dentist and a lier, besides being very unkind. Once I drove all the way to Austin, because my tooth was hurting so, and he did nothing... I was shocked that he was so unprofessional that he would crown a tooth that needed work on the gum before the crown- causing terrible inflammation, that he would put a crown on a tooth that needed a root canal- again causing terrible pain, and that he charged me for that botched work, and that he lied to the credit company. Do NOT go to Dr. Matt. He may have Rocky Erickson's guitar on his wall but he is a pathetic dentist and not good at diagnosis and caused me to lose two teeth due to his thoughtless and careless dental work. And I have to pay for it!! Be warned.... do not go to Authentic Smiles, you will be taking your chances and probably will lose the crowns that he whips out that are almost like temporary crowns, both mine caused pain and the teeth had to be pulled because his work was not up to par. Yelp has placed my previous review under "not recommended". I do not understand why, as people did find it helpful, it was accurate and corroborates numerous other's experiences as well (many of which, for some reason, are also "not recommended"). I had a very bad experience with this dentist. He lied to me about having a cracked tooth and talked me into a crown. I had to go to another dentist to repair the terrible work he did, and I just recently had a root canal as a result of further complications due to the damage he caused the nerve on this tooth that only needed a filling replaced. Dr Matt is not a good dentist. I recommenced reading the "not recommended" reviews. Yelp, this is dentistry, not just a dining experience or some massage. We are talking about peoples health and well being here, not to mention to crazy amount of money people have to spend to address dental issues. Accurate representation of health professionals is paramount. Suppressing valid negative reviews helps no one, and dings your credibility. read more

I would give zero stars if that were possible after a horrible experience related to insurance. Apparently the office staff did not file the paperwork correctly or to my dental insurance - they also waited over a year to tell me what the issue was so every time I called my insurance and described the work that had been done my dental insurance told me it was 100 covered. I didn't mind paying the bill but was pretty hacked off when authentic smiles sent it to a collection agency after not contacting me about it for 6 months (last time I spoke to them they were going to refile so I thought it was resolved). What makes me really mad is that they said they contacted me when they had not since June. I have them the benefit of the doubt that maybe I missed something until I mentioned it to an attorney at work who goes thre as well and she had the same issues, including staff telling her that they had sent and emailed things they had not. Because of this five of us in our office that went to authentic smiles (our office is 2 blocks away) have moved on to another DDS that's less convenient but more on top of things. Seems that others on yelp have experienced similar problems, be warned.... You might get clean teeth but messed up credit if you go here. read more
