I found Dr. Rydels office after my chiropractor suggested using Austin Magazine's Best of the Best list! I thought for sure it would be months to get in but I called and scheduled my cleaning for the following week which is like, not usual. When I got there everyone was so nice and friendly! I'm going to be honest and say I haven't been to the dentist in four years. Two years of covid and another two of procrastination. Despite some plaque buildup no one tried to sell me anything, no upcharges, no hidden fee surprises and all smile and NO CAVITIES! But seriously like this was the best dentist experience I've ever had and I loved my dentist in Florida but they still weren't transparent about everything. This was really pleasant, not unco, Jess explained everything to me as she did it and state of the art technology so giving scans and X-rays were a breeze and quick! I got my little goodie bag of toothbrush, floss and toothpaste which are great for your gym bag, purse or travel. I see why they are rated as the best. Thanks to that office and team, you all are doing great! On a personal note, my mouthwash is peroxide, I use double floss floss picks, quip toothbrush and a natural toothpaste called mouth mud. I've liked this office over the years and never expected to leave but find myself unexpectedly looking for a new practice. Scheduled a cleaning before some upcoming major surgery as I won't be back for a while. Upon arrival the hygienist said she couldn't do the cleaning without X-rays. Had to leave because I couldn't afford it. Got the vibe she really didn't care one bit but no surprise in today's world of customer service. Really great practice otherwise but the "liable due to no X-rays" is such bologna. $560 to go to the dentist? What a joke. So unfortunate. I really liked this group. They got me checked in and started within really fast, the cleaning was actually very pleasant, thorough, and informative, and the office was clean and beautiful. Dr. Rydel was recommended to me so I went in for a cleaning/check-up with no issues. Upon arrival they insisted on taking X-rays despite me sharing my previous X-rays and records from my dentist in another state claiming "you can't be a patient in this office without annual X-rays because we're liable if we miss something". I knew that can't be true but was already there so despite my reservation about unnecessary X-rays and such a bold claim, I allowed it. I should have walked out then because I knew this was not a good match for me. After a cleaning and X-rays the dentist came in and she was not Dr. Rydel who I specifically requested but Dr. Akari. She said I had a cavity (I had no idea, no discomfort, and don't have many fillings). After the filling was done my mouth around that tooth was sore for days. It healed but never felt quite right and weeks later got so I couldn't chew on that side at all - it just felt weird. I went back in and explained and she made me feel a bit nuts saying there was nothing wrong and wanted to take another X-ray which I questioned because I had just had one BY HER. She didn't like me asking WHY I needed another but explained it was to see if the filling went too close to the root. Worrying now that she created a problem I didn't have, I had the X-ray and she said it looked fine. She recommended I take lots of Advil because maybe it's inflammation from the filling (from 2 months prior) and they'd follow up the next week and change the filling if it didn't improve. It did not improve, so I went back and was spoken to so condescendingly, told that she thinks this is "normal". So I asked if she considers it normal for a person who had no discomfort before a procedure to not to be able to chew 2 months after a filling is put in. She said that is not normal. I questioned if she thought I'd come in to have a filling redone for no reason as if that's pleasant for anyone. I didn't wait for her answer. I got up and told her this was not a place for me. I don't need or want X-rays like they're nothing and would go to another dentist to fix the problem she caused me. PS- I had sent my husband to this place first and hadn't realized that they also gave him Dr. Akari rather than Dr. Rydel who I'd requested. The temporary crown she put on his broken tooth fell off within a couple of days. I'll never walk back into this place and wish I had gone with my gut and walked out with their first insistence for annual X-rays and silly claim that they're liable if they miss something that isn't visible. I was referred to Dr. Rydel's practice by my adult daughter who has been her patient for some years. I moved to the Austin area just a few years ago on retirement, and the first dental practice I consulted here was just fine technically, but during the pandemic their administration/management clearly fell apart. I was able to schedule a new patient appointment with Dr. Rydel's practice promptly. Her staff is friendly, professional and helpful and I was able to complete all paperwork and forms online prior to my appointment. The office itself is newly renovated with plenty of parking and the staff is just as friendly and helpful in person as over the phone. The dental hygienist did an excellent job and necessary x-rays were completed without any need for retakes. Dr. Rydel herself is very professional and pleasant. I am completely satisfied with her as my new dentist. i consider that I am a decent judge of these things as I am a retired physician who happened to require quite a lot of dental work through the years in the state where I formerly practiced. read more
