I was pretty apprehensive about going to a periodontist for the first time. I've always tried to have good oral hygiene habits, but unfortunately my genetics aren't so great. The staff was really patient, especially during the procedure. I apologized multiple times for asking them to stop while I composed myself. Dr. Bingham is a very good periodontist. He does great work, and I would have stayed with him, but he dropped out of network with my insurance. I was paying for dental insurance but got no benefit out of it, making it useless. I could not pay out of pocket. If you can afford to go there you will get great service. I am sure they had business reasons for dropping out. read more

This guy is brilliant. I have had two A+ dentists in my life, a Dr. Goode in Ames Iowa (a dentist's dentist) and this guy. I never write a dental review, let alone on Yelp. I am a STEM person, so he is ultra detailed, ultra smart, and what he advised left him getting only $150 for a complex mouth problem. He himself was truly in the top 0.1% of human intelligence. there is no follow up because he doesn't do the procedure he recommended, and a prosthedontist nearly did two days earlier! What a great experience! I went to a different dentist locally in Austin who told me I needed an expensive deep cleaning of my gums and told me I have poor gum health. But I brush and floss regularly. They also suggested I needed to replace a filling. Something didn't seem right, so I went to Dr. Bingham for second opinion. Sure enough, his team did a thorough exam and informed me that my gums were actually in very good health and that I wouldn't need an expensive deep cleaning. Everyone in the office was professional, thorough and responsive. Overall, a I left feeling as if I had been treated fairly and honestly. I was so surprised to come here and see the low reviews. Looking at them, it seems like they're mostly about insurance issues which feels unfair because insurance is the worst and it's hard for people to understand. Anyways, for my review: I've had far too many dental problems and have moved a ton so I have seen MANY dentists, periodontists, oral surgeons, endodontists, etc. I had to do a crown lengthening with Dr. B at Council Oak Perio and I can say I would definitely use them again if needed (but hopefully not needed haha!) The front office staff is great, transparent, and skillful. They really make an effort to make sure you understand what to expect the day of and how to prepare for surgery. The surgery went well and I was really impressed with the aftercare package they gave. It went far above and beyond what other places have done - they included a fresh-pressed juice knowing that you can't solid food for the day, lip balm knowing your lips will get dry, a healing gel to speed the process, and so much more. I've had many dental surgeries and never had such a thoughtful group of items given to me after care. When I went in for my two-week post-op, Telicia (spelling?) was really empathetic and helpful. I had expressed how frustrated I had been feeling about not being able to floss/waterpik the surgery site and how I felt like food kept getting stuck there. She spent a solid 10 minutes just helping clean the area to make sure I felt comfortable while it continued to heal. I feel like other places would have just been like "swish harder" or "yeah, that sucks." For all my future perio needs (which is hopefully none), Council Oak Perio will be my place. read more

Dr Bingham was very nice. That said, no one told me up front that THEY REQUIRE YOU TO PAY UP FRONT AND WAIT FOR YOUR INSURANCE TO REIMBURSE YOU. If they'd told me up front, I would not have wasted the entire afternoon and the cost of the exam and X-rays. I will not be going back. I will find a provider who has a billing clerk. Be sure you ask them THOROUGHLY about insurance before you go in and be sure you know exactly what you are getting into. Tiffany called me to make an appointment, trying to sell me Care. I let her talk me into having one, even though I knew I was not in a place to pay their expensive prices. They hounded me down and called me like telemarketers, I finally agreed. They say they sent me a link to an email but I didn't have one. I ended up missing the pop up appointment because I never got a confirmation email. I now have to pay 75 dollars due to a missed appointment that I didn't even want to attend in the first place. One of the other employees actually suggested that I go to a cheaper place, telling me that they were extremely high. Tiffany is nice nasty, she says she has been here for 12 years but doesn't have the capacity to deal with people. Customer care is not her strong point. The dollars are. The whole time talking to her I felt I was being pushed into a corner like a car salesman. She doesn't care about your teeth, she cares about meeting a quota. I kept telling her I didn't want an appointment in the first place, I suggested it to my home dentist but once I heard the prices I knew I couldn't swing it at this time. She kept trying to push credit cards and other means on me to pay for the service. I'm sure the dentist is lovely, but Tiffany must go. Sorry Lonestar. read more

I had an excellent experience here! The front desk, doctor, and hygienist were all incredible. I came for a deep cleaning after not having been to the dentist for 2.5 years. I got in really quickly (about a weeks wait). Once I was actually at the office I never had to wait. All three of my visits have been very timely, and even shorter than I had expected. They took a quick pano Xray which was very nice since I have a very difficult time with the traditional xrays with the film in your mouth that you have to bite down on. I did two separate visits, for each sides of mouth, and both times I had Kianna (sp?) as my hygienist. She was INCREDIBLE. Professional, quick, and did a fantastic job. I always have jaw pain for a couple weeks after visiting the dentist or orthodontist, however all my visits here with her I have not had any residual pain. I'm really shocked at how much better I feel after leaving this office compared to others. The second visit I mentioned to her how I was apprehensive about getting the numbing shots because I hate feeling numb (and I hate the needles), and so she did a light topical numbing and said she would get started and if it was tolerable then we wouldn't have to do any of the shots. I didn't have one bit of pain during my entire cleaning! I am so happy to walk out of here and not be all numbed up for hours! I feel like the pricing was very reasonable for the quality of work and professionalism I received. After my visit I was given an electric toothbrush, a fresh veggie and fruit juice, and multiple follow up care items. I don't live anywhere close to this office, however I am happy to make the drive knowing they will get me in and out quickly while still doing a fantastic job! read more

Good luck getting you insurance claim filed or getting ahold of anyone that works here (other than Dr.Hinze himself). I have been waiting for 4 months to get my refund because Metlife has been requesting images from Lone Star for 4 months now. Every time I call the phone number listed on the website, it goes straight to voicemail (even during normal business hours) and whenever I email them, I never get a response. This is very frustrating when you are trying to get your claim processed. The only reason I am giving this company 2 stars is because Dr. Hinze is amazing. If I could leave a review for only him, it would be for 5 stars. He is 1 of 2 dentists I have ever felt comfortable with (the other being Dr. Todd Harris). He made sure I was well informed on the procedure and after care, and he made sure I was comfortable during it. Even during the follow-ups he makes sure I understand the healing process and how to take care of my gums in the future. read more

Wow, I never thought I'd give 5 stars to someone who pulled my tooth, but here goes. A few months back, one of my crowns broke off at the gum line. There was no saving the tooth, and an extraction was suggested. I didn't want to go toothless, so I researched my options and decided on getting an implant. My dentist recommended Lone Star as that's who he uses. I figured I'd be in pretty good hands. Boy, I had no idea what a great experience this would be. I went in and met with Dr Fritz Hinze and he put me at ease immediately. He's got this adorable way about him and just a lovely assuring nature. That's the last time I remember seeing him. I scheduled the procedures (extraction/bone graft/implant) for a day my husband could take off work. Dr Hinze staff worked with me on payments and made sure I had all the meds I needed before the procedure. I took a Halcion before the surgery and really don't remember a damn thing. I woke up on the way home and wondered when we would get there to find out it was over. I could feel where my gums had been cut open and I could feel the stitches, and I just kept waiting for the pain to get bad. It didn't...ever. I did take some advil for a week after as I had a light amount of pain, but nothing that two ibus couldn't handle. To top it off, I was drinking fresh squeezed orange juice the next afternoon with no pain at all. How did he do it? I say he's magic. Or at least, there's magic in those hands. I hope never to have this done again, but if I do, I would be thrilled to see Dr Hinze again. read more

Dr Holtzclaw is the expert and my implant went perfectly. The cost was discussed upfront, VERY fair price since I had consultations with 3 additional implant docs. He gives lectures on periodontics and very well respected among his colleagues and peers. His staff was professional. The location is convenient. I can't believe that I am going to write this.. I am actually looking forward to another implant with this doc if I need one. GO to this periodontist. I also go here to get my teeth cleaned and Monica the hygentist is very nice and did an excellent job. They don't try to oversell you on thousands of dollars in fillingx and crowns.. because they don't do them here. :) read more

Today I went in for a consultation with Dr. Hinze for an extraction and implant replacement for an abscessed moral. The extraction was a recommendation made by my general dentist who has strong (negative) views of root canals and their long-term effects. Needless to say, I was very stressed, confused and unsure of what path to take since most dentists would recommend a root canal first. With very short notice, Dr. Hinze found time in his busy schedule to see me. It was, hands down, one of the best experiences I've ever had with a dentist. He was attentive and caring - listened and asked questions about the history of my tooth, asked about my concerns and listened to them all. He then spent more than 30 minutes discussing the various options I have to treat the tooth. He shared the pros and cons of each procedure and used supporting research and data to back it up. He was very familiar with the techniques and research out there and this gave me peace of mind that he was current on the studies in the area. At the end of the appointment, we came to the conclusion that a root canal, and not an implant, was the best option for my tooth at this point in time and given all the factors at play with my specific situation. In fact this meant that he wouldn't get my business in the short term and he even recommended an endodontist. What an ethical and honest doctor! Truly living up to the doctor's oath! And it goes without saying that his office staff were as kind, helpful and friendly. I left feeling confident that I am on the right path. I can't stress how caring, genuine and knowledgable Dr. Hinze was. I highly recommend him and his office. read more

I had my first dental cleaning with Lonestar Periodontics and what a relief. I have been to a number of dentists in the last couple of year trying to find a place that is excellent at what they do but not "sale-sy" like you aren't sure what they are saying is really true. The dental hygienist at Lonestar Periodontics is excellent and very careful to provide a thorough yet gentle cleaning experience. Also, when I asked Dr. Hinze about a concern I had with some older caps, he explained what was going on and assured me that the caps are in good shape. Looking forward to making this my permanent home for oral care. read more

Medically, I think these people really know what they are doing (hence 2 stars instead of 1). Business-wise, I felt like I was being swindled. 1. They make you pay up front for your work in full and then they file your claim with insurance for you. While I've heard that technically they aren't supposed to do this, it's not the end of the world. What is really bad, though, is that the insurance company pays THEM what you are due, and you have to trust LoneStar to send it along to you. Did they send mine along to me? Nope! Delta had paid them Delta's portion of my cleaning bill, but I had already paid 100% up front. I called LoneStar to inquire about 6 weeks after I should have received the reimbursement and they said "Oh, we just sent some out this weekend-- yours was one of them". I read that as: We pocked the money and waited until you called to inquire, and we'll sent it out to you asap". (They just sent out an email about a "glitch" in their insurance claims system, which I could have told them existed.) 2. I was charged for a periodontal cleaning for both times I had cleanings here, which is almost double what my normal cleanings have been at my normal dentist. When I asked about what the difference is, they were unable to tell me as far as procedure goes. The actual cleaning was 100% identical to every other cleaning I've ever had. One person said it's because I'm forever a perio patient since I once had a perio surgery. Regardless, my normal dentist says I'm in no way a perio patient and don't need any extra cleaning procedures done. 3. I have gotten three appointment reminders about appointments I've never made. I've heard that this is a way in this industry to get people to come in more than they need to. Many people aren't super keeping track of their dental cleanings, so I think many people might just come in for a random appointment they never made. 4. TWICE I had cleanings that were supposed to involve a quick exam from the Dr. TWICE I waited in the chair for more than 30 minutes after the cleaning for the visit. TWICE I was told I had to come back in the next day to be visited because the Dr. was in the middle of something else. If I had cancelled like that, I would have been charged, no doubt. Extra time, extra trip, and no apology from the Dr. or the front desk. read more

Yesterday I had my first appointment with Dr Bingham. Kyanna the hygienist was wonderful. She was so gentle and very caring. I felt so at ease with her and Dr Bingham. Everyone was so welcoming of me to the practice. I know that I am in the right place to help with my dental issues. I am so thankful to my dentist Dr Jennifer Chau for referring me to such a great practice. If you need a periodontist then look no further, I highly recommend Council Oaks Dental Implants and Periodontics. Upon leaving the practice, I met with Angela Walker treatment coordinator. Angela was upbeat and mad me feel so at ease. I felt like I had known her for years. She was so awesome explaining the cost of my treatments. My first visit to Dr. Bingham's office for a perio maintenance appointment was great. The hygienist, Kara, was lovely and did a great job explaining things and answering my questions. The front of house staff was helpful in explaining how my new insurance works and what future procedures would cost. I cannot recommend Council Oak Perio enough for your dental needs. Dr. Bingham and his entire team are absolutely wonderful. It is easy to schedule appointments, they were always on time, answered my many questions and explained everything to me relating to my treatment / care in detail throughout the process. I really liked their proactive approach when it came to setting expectations for my treatment plan as well as after surgery care. They helped me manage my expectations and set me up for success. This is truly a wonderful office dedicated to their patience which is so hard to find. In addition to the wonderful treatment I received, I cannot applaud them enough for everything they are doing to keep their office open and safe when it comes to COVID-19. They are diligent about temperature checks, hand sanitizing and masks. They also keep their waiting room clear so you do not come into contact with anyone unnecessarily. If I had to summarize my experience with Lone Star Periodontics in one sentence I would write, "Save your money and spare your sanity, or prepare for the worst." Procedure: Two bone grafts. Cost: $3,500 Issue #1: No on prepared me that my jaw would possibly be numb for up to six months post surgery. When I called two days after to explain this, the office admin said, 'Yeah, that's a possibility, you could be numb for months," and tried to hang up on me. I had to demand a post op visit to be sure a nerve wasn't severed. Issue #2: I was treated very patronizingly. Does anyone like to be treated this way...? That's a rhetorical question. Issue #3: They don't direct bill insurance. I had the surgery at the end of December, 2014 and it is now 4/28/15 and I am still fighting with my insurance to get partially reimbursed. Issue #4: And here's a doozy...when I came to my senses and realized I need to get a second opinion about the numbness and work that was done, I saw an oral / maxillofacial surgeon (i.e. someone with more schooling and training). I was told that the grafts were UNNECESSARY and that there is an implant that would have accomplished the same thing without the bone grafting surgery. So, no numbness, and no wasted money. Also, Lone Star said I had to wait six months to see if the grafts worked, which the surgeon saw six weeks later and said they weren't substantial enough to accomplish what they intended to accomplish. To me this would indicate Lone Star was priming me for ANOTHER $3,500 procedure. So, while I hate writing bad reviews for small businesses, my experience was so awful that my sincere hope is that others don't have to experience what I did...an extremely painful and expensive procedure that was completely unnecessary. read more

I called looking for Dr. Holtzclaw because of great recommendations of his work; unfortunately he no longer works at Lone Star Periodontics. The office led me to believe that Dr. Holtzclaw still worked at the office and when I arrived I was seen by a different doctor. This is not acceptable. read more

I don't know how good Dr. Bingham is or not because I couldn't get past his office policies to actually have my procedure. The entire office gave me a weird vibe from the beginning and I should have listened to my inner warning signs. The office is very "money" driven. I brought some xrays with me so that I wouldn't have to pay for additional ones only to be told that they were not current enough to use. I was told by my orthodontist that if they weren't I could come by and they would take some at no charge. When I told Dr. Bingham's assistant this she said that if I rescheduled the appt. I would be charged a cancellation fee. He couldn't see me without xrays so I was between a rock and a hard spot. Then when I did call to schedule my procedure I was told I had to pay before they would schedule me. I had to apply for CareCredit through the phone with them so my appt. could be set up. My appt. was set for 8:30 on a Monday so when I became ill over the weekend I had no way of notifying them until their office opened that morning. I was then told I would have to pay a $75 no show fee before they would reschedule me. I decided to get a 2nd opinion at this point because I wasn't sure if I really needed the procedure or if it was money driven on their part. I called his office to tell them I wanted a refund of my $938 and was told I would be charged a "refund fee" of 25%!! When I asked them to provide me proof that I was aware of such an unbelievable policy she stated "its like our snow policy, we don't explain it until it actually happens." After a lot of arguing on my part I finally said to refund the rest to my credit card and I would fight them to get the balance back, I was told that I would need to come to their office in person to sign the refund slip, another office policy. I was clear across town and I told her that was ridiculous and she stated "if I wanted the money refunded I needed to sign the slip." When I got there 2 days later to sign, I was then told she had refunded the money the day before!! By filing a grievance with my credit card company, I have been able to recoup the difference they withheld a few weeks later. I have since filed a complaint with the Texas Dental Board regarding this policy. I'm not telling you not to go there but make sure you are fully aware of ALL of their financial policies. read more

After reading another review on here that seemed very similar, I felt I had to share my experience. I saw Dr. Bingham for dental implants. After a 3D scan, he recommended I see an orthodontist and he would not continue my treatment without that (he did not want to schedule my next appointment until I saw the orthodontist he referred me to). I made it very clear I did not want to go back in braces. He did not listen to me, but made comments to the extent of " I wish I had better news". Thankfully, I saw an oral surgeon (MD) who told me I absolutely do not need braces (and did not understand why it was even a consideration), and significantly reduced the "severity" of my case: the situation of my bone (and bone grafting needed) wasn't as dire as Dr. Bingham made it seem. I was very upset for the weeks after the appointment (waiting to be seen by the orthodontist against my own wishes) and am glad I got a second opinion. Others may have a better experience here, but for bone grafting or dental implants needed, I highly recommend you see an oral surgeon. As a patient, I want to be treated like a person, and my experience will be mostly defined by someone's attitude and capability to listen. I'm glad I followed my instincts. read more

I had a very positive experience here. My dentist, who I believe is ethical, honest, and fair, referred me to this practice to deal with an issue of receding gums. I felt like my doctor, Chris Bingham, was excellent in professionalism, manner, and follow-up. He actually balked at me for NOT calling him on the cell phone number they give to patients following surgery to report a small issue; I had told him I didn't feel it was necessary to bother him during non-business hours. He very firmly stated that I should always call with any concerns no matter how small they seem to me! It seems that patient care is very important to this practice. The procedure itself went very well and my outcome was about as good as it gets, from what I understand about this type of treatment, so I was very pleased with the doctor's technique and skill, although the post surgery recovery is just not fun for several days (this would be the case anywhere!). Generally I had very good interaction with the front office, and was impressed that the office manager actually seems very well versed in the type of treatments that the office provides, and was able to give me some helpful feedback after surgery. My only issue was a small delay in the office billing my insurance after the procedure, but that was resolved fairly quickly. I would definitely use them again if I have these types of needs in the future (which I hope I don't!). I felt like I was in good hands. read more
