THE FRONT OFFICE AT AUSTIN EYECARE IS NEGLIGENT/INCOMPETENT!!! This was a 5 star review now it's a 1 due to their awful business practices.. Last went to Dr. Desai over 6mos ago. Been her patient for years. They have now sent me into collections twice for one visit. I haven't received a single bill in the mail or phone call from the office. I called after the first collection letter for like $4.12 and paid, asking if this is settled they said yes and low and behold another bill pops up 3mos later - now for $40 for a rebilling fee?! I am done with this company forever. Not for her skill as a doctor for but her front office's gross negligent incompetence. This is infuriating that I have to find a new optometrist due to gross mismanagement by her front office. Somebody ought to be fired over this nonsense. read more

If I could give a one star I would, Absolutely a horrible service only with the staff. Dr is amazing and super sweet but definitely needs replacing within the people managing the office. It's been over two weeks for my daughters glasses and still have yet to receive them even though she needs them for school which starts tomorrow!!! With the amount of money we paid this is unacceptable, and the apologizing doesn't fix the issue. We have been going here, kind of annually for years. I have been really impressed. The examinations were on point, and very meticulous kept. Never has there been an insurance mix-up, and never an appointment forgotten about. There are a medium supply of glasses, maybe you might be able to get some cheaper at an el cheapo discount store, but the ones I have purchased have lasted years longer than intended normal wear and tear. All visits and appointments were accurate and on time. I never had to get a second opinion, nor was there ever any attempt at upselling. Dr. Duke is going to retire, but already has a replacement working to preclude problems in the future. Dr. Duke, it will be sad to see you head off into retirement some day but it is well deserved. Discovered a screw in my frames had fallen out right before a major road trip & called around for repair. The staff here is very kind (and they check your temp at the door, so they care about your health) & they got me in much quicker than I thought would be possible. After being brand loyal to LaFont glasses and not being loyal to a particular optometrist because of my transient nature, I saw AEC listed on my insurance provider and gave 'em a whirl. I don't suffer from anything serious with my eyes other than horrifically poor vision, so I wasn't concerned about any other health issues or being talked into LASIK. My experience was just fine. The idea of glasses is that if you have to wear them, make them fun. An accessory, if you will. And with the help of the courteous team, accessorize I did. After trying on nearly 100 pairs of glasses, I walked out with Kate Spade sunnies and Tory Burch spectacles. I plan on returning soon to get fitted for contacts! read more

I paid over $260 out of pocket with excellent insurance only to find out i could have gone to Costco and paid $10 out of pocket for a similar pair of the same brand. Wonderful staff!! I was able to get in for an appointment the same day, which is typically unheard of in Austin! Stacy and Dr. Duke were simply amazing! They both talked me through everything they were doing and looking at; so I was never left wondering or waiting. I was in and out in less then an hour. Lili took the time to explain exactly what my insurance covered and what would be left to pay out of pocket (which is greatly appreciated). The glasses are priced reasonably and they have a good selection to pick from. They all seemed like they genuinely cared about their patients. I've gone to see Dr. Duke and team since I moved to Austin about 3 years ago now. So, three annual visits and some random stops to pick up new glasses and contacts. Dr. Duke is the best - he's the first Optometrist that offered the retinal photos, and took the time to explain what they were showing and what they likely meant for my long term vision. I don't feel rushed during the exam, and he doesn't switch through a million lens combinations like I find some other Optometrist do. He's been very patient as we work to find the best and most comfortable contacts for my eyes, and will always give me a few trial pairs to test out. He doesn't push (or really even mention) purchasing glasses or contacts through the office and provides the written prescription without prompting (great to have on hand). The front desk staff has always been attentive, responsive, and courteous. They're patient with you while trying to find the perfect glasses, and will give you feedback and suggestions. Overall a great practice. My work has an on-site full service Optometrist, but I'll continue to travel down south to see Dr. Duke and his team. read more

I had a routine eye exam here and Dr. Duke kept trying to push Lasik on me. I asked him if there were any side effects to the surgery and he kept trying to down play them. I have read up on Lasik and I know that there can be serious side effects (such as blindness) but he kept insisting that I had nothing to worry about. I'm pretty sure he gets a referral bonus or something if he refers patients to Mann Eye Institute. In addition, his staff is bumbling and incompetent. On a separate occasion, I came to Austin Eyecare to get sunglass lenses for some frames I had purchase from Gene Rogers Optical. The girl that was helping me didn't know her ass from her elbow. First of all, they don't explain any of the charges to you. Secondly, they were all conferring in front of me and talking about different lenses options that they were going to choose for me (presumably because I wouldn't know the difference?). Hello? I'm right here. 30 minutes later, this does not seem to be going anywhere, so I asked for my frames back and walked out. Dr. Duke is an OK eye doctor, but just having to deal with his incompetent and unhelpful staff has me looking for a new optometrist. His staff care more about going on their lunch break than providing you with helpful information. read more

I picked Dr. Duke from a list of providers covered by my eye insurance company, VSP. I had no idea what to expect. In short, I was very pleased with my appointment. His staff answered the phone, scheduled an appointment for the next day and told me how I could download the new patient forms on their website. When I arrived for my appointment, I gave them my completed forms and within 5 minutes, my exam started. The exam included the digital retinal scan (extra cost) which I think is the latest and greatest technology. Dr. Duke's portion of the exam was very good. He was thorough, explained what he was testing for and diagnosed a minor issue that no other optometrist had picked up on. Dr. Duke asked a lot of questions and spent a significant amount of time reviewing the results of my earlier tests and his exam. I wear contacts and buy them online. One of the generally uncomfortable parts of going to an optometrist is that they always push you to buy glasses or contacts from them. Not so with Dr. Duke. He asked whether I wanted to buy contacts and was very helpful and courteous when I told him I preferred to purchase them online. I walked out with new prescriptions for my glasses and contacts. I have been seeing Dr. Duke for about 4 or 5 years now based on a recommendation from a family friend. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Duke and his whole staff. They're always running on time and Dr. Duke answers all of my questions (and I have a lot) in terms that I understand. A few years ago something had cut my eye and Dr. Duke stayed after office hours to help me out and avoid having to go to the ER. Dr Summers nice and personable. But optical staff was not helpful, and their upgrade charges to get polycarbonate vs plastic were twice as much as a couple of other places that I found. I felt ripped off. They also told me that it would be 2 weeks before my glasses came in which is crazy long. I cancelled my order and went elsewhere for my glasses. Though Dr Summers was very sweet, I don't recommend this business because their pricing structure was over the top. They compensate for insurance claims by over-charging. Boo for them Yep, over-charging confirmed. Found what they were selling me for 1/2 what I would have paid with them, but after 2 other consultations, found that I didn't really need what they tried to upsell to me. read more

Dr. Duke is by far the best eye doctor I've ever been to. And I've needed glasses for the last 34 years! I now wear no line bifocals and so vision issues are a little more complicated and Dr. Duke is extremely knowledgeable and patient while I ask all my questions.
