I decided to go to Dr. Soltys after doing a little Yelp research. I found two optometrists in the south Austin area that were rated 5 stars. One was in a Walmart and the other was in the Barton Creek mall. I read the reviews and both seemed good. I chose Barton Creek mall because it was closer to my area. Overall I had a great experience as you can tell from my high rating. The only negative was having to walk through Sears to get there. The front desk was very professional and friendly. Once seated, I spent just a few minutes waiting for my appointment. There were videos playing on flat screens about various eye stuff. It was a bit scary I have to say, but I can understand it's helpful. The two assistants that did the pre-workup were professional as well. They were very attentive to my comfort and tried to make me feel at ease by asking questions about football, my job, my school etc. I hadn't been to an optometrist for a few years and the equipment and techniques seem to have been updated. For one, they took a photo of my eye with a laser beam. It was a little uncomfortable putting my eye up against the device and it made my eye water, but it was quick and painless. The two assistants took me into a patient room and did the standard stuff. They asked me about my eye history, did a reading of my current prescription from my current glasses, asked about medications and explained what the doctor was going to do once he started. This whole process took about 10 minutes. Once the doctor came in, he went over my pre-work and did an eye exam. I felt like he was very professional and thorough. He answered all of my questions. I have seen a lot of doctors in my life, and I am pretty hard on them and usually ask a lot of questions. I could tell right away that I liked him. Unfortunately for me, I had gotten a bit older and my prescription required bi-focals. I had never used them before and the Dr. explained my two options with lenses. You can do a progressive bi-focal which has a transition between the two prescriptions, or you can do a standard bi-focal. The Dr. recommended the progressive and I agreed. I had my prescription filled and I immediately realized that I could not work with progressive bi-focals. I called the office back and scheduled a followup. The office and Dr. were very nice and thorough again and it was no additional charge. I decided to have two glasses made, one with my distance prescription and one with my reading prescription. The cost was about the same as the progressive prescription. I have been happy with this solution so far, although I have to carry around an extra pair of reading glasses with me. I guess that is the price of old age. read more

I am super-picky about optometrists because I have really bad vision. I just happened to be in the Barton Square Mall and was looking at one of those chain eyeglass stores and asked someone there about optometrists. Both of the young employees enthusiastically recommended Dr. Soltys, although there are several other optometrists in the Barton Creek Mall. They were not just selling me, they really meant it. I like this office for several reasons. 1. Dr. Soltys is a really good optometrist. I've been to lots; I know 'em. The doc is excellent. Very professional. Very competent. 2. The office is open 7 days a week. There are other dr's there and I really like the idea that someone is always there in case of an emergency (retinal detachment, etc.) 3. They have state of the art equipment including a machine that takes picture of the back of your eye without need for dilation. It takes a cool digital picture that shows you what your cornea looks like for now and for future reference to show changes in your eye health. This is a great machine and I would never now go to an optometrist that did not have this technology. 3. Its in the Mall!! Easy parking and access. Good excuse to shop. read more

I took everyone's Yelp advice and made an appointment (for a Sunday) at Barton Creek Eyecare. When I arrived the staff was very friendly and before I could sit down and open the Entertainment Weekly I was taken back to the exam room. I did not see Dr. Soltys but instead Dr. Haselhorst, who was knowledgeable and friendly. He took the time to answer the questions I had and explain the exam as he went - of course I didn't understand any of the doctor speak but I appreciated his effort. I was in and out in about 30 minutes but never rushed and I wasn't pressured to buy contacts through them. It is also next door to Lens Crafters so I was able to go next door and buy a new pair of glasses right away! I will be back! read more

A previous patient, this was my first time back since the Highland mall office closure; simply for geographical reasons. It was great to be back under Dr. Soltys's care and well worth the trip south. He remains very professional, as with my previous experiences, and has developed a very professional staff. Furthermore, I feel Dr. Soltys's professional opinion remains in my interest as his patient and not watered down with an effort to up-sell something to me as a consumer. I can't stress enough how important that last point is to me or how boldly that underscores my overall experience and faith in a professional diagnosis or recommendation. For reference I'm a middle-aged male and my wife has remained a patient, despite the aforementioned office relocation, for approximately 11 consecutive years. It is so pleasant to be under Dr. Soltys care. He is always so helpful and truly has a passion for his customers and his work. Went in for a routine eye exam and it was determined that I am going blind lol (not really). My vision had decreased a bit and he recommended switching my lense prescription and had my new contacts ready within a few days. I can see so much more clearly now and I think the constant headache I had was from not being able to see. My headaches are gone and I can see better than ever - can't ask for much more than that. read more

I agree with everything the first reviewer said. Dr. Soltys is personable and has an extraordinarily calm and professional demeanor without coming off as aloof or uncaring. I tend to ask a lot of questions of my health care professionals, and he was able to answer them all competently and thoroughly. His pricing seems to be industry standard. Prices may seem high if you haven't shopped around, but they're actually on the more reasonable side, considering how long he's been practicing. According to his record at the Texas Optometry Board, he's been licensed for over 11 years, which is way more than most of the optometrists I found while I was shopping around. Aside from all the attributes mentioned by the previous reviewer, I also liked that Dr. Soltys was easily accessible -- I was able to get a same-day appointment. There was a bit of wait time between different stages of the exam once I got there, but I got the feeling it was due to Dr. Soltys's patience and thoroughness with his patients and not due to overbooking. I also really, really appreciated that I didn't feel like his office was pushing all sorts of products on me after the exam. I walked out with a free full-sized contact lens solution sample and two different types of free contact lens samples and was advised to call back in a week after trying them both out to order more; most offices these days try to coerce you into buying a product on the spot and without offering a choice. And, though I expected them to, his office did not harass me a week later to purchase something from them. His support staff was friendly, but unremarkable. Don't be put off because Dr. Soltys offices at the mall, where most service providers build their practices on volume over quality. Dr. Soltys has been my eye doctor for the past 5 years and I would totally recommend him. He is professional and thorough and I never doubt that he has given me an accurate prescription or diagnosis. The office is perfectly fine, and best of all, they have weekend and evening hours. It's a little bit of a bummer that it's in the mall, since the mall is the most depressing place on earth, but that's the trade-off for their awesome hours. I've been seeing Dr. Soltys for about 7 years. I think he is very good and I am very picky about healthcare providers. Positives about Dr. Soltys: He has a very calm, relaxed manner and he is very professional and thorough. I have never had any problems with my lens prescription being inaccurate. Positives about the office: It's not hard to get an appointment. The office staff hooks me up with a free sample pair of my contacts at every visit. I paid full price for a long time before I got vision insurance, and the prices were reasonable. read more

Thought the exam went well. Total bill $400.00. A few months later, when I went to get the prescription filled, I found that the prescription failed to meet my intended purpose. When I went back to the office to get the prescription adjusted I was told I'd have to redo the whole exam and double pay. This doctor should have determined, in discussion with me, what my goals were with this prescription. That's what he's being paid for. read more

After having a few issues with contacts from another eye doctor I decided to try a new doctor. Dr. Soltys was able to figure out pretty quickly why my contacts were not working. The last eye doctor prescribed expensive allergy drops that did't work and Dr. Soltys realized it was not allergies but the type of contacts they kept prescribing me as well as updating my prescription. The entire staff was friendly and the appointment was efficient without feeling rushed. read more

Don't list their prices on their website, and when I filled out their form asking for their costs on a regular visit, I never received a response. I also noticed that they brag up their Yelp scores on their website. When I get bad service from a site that is advertising their yelp scores, I wonder if they received those scores legitimately or are doing things to get higher scores (like giving some patients kickbacks for them.) I'm not saying that is the case here. They may just be bad about answering their information requests. But then I am not reporting a score based on whether they are usually good or not, I am scoring them based on my experience with them, and that is that I can't get the information I need from them to decide if I want to use their service or not because they have not replied to information request. Maybe one of their competitors who also has a high score will. read more

I, too, selected Dr. Soltys based on Yelp reviews and I'm glad I did. I'd been having problems with my contact lenses and had gone to an ophthalmologist under the mistaken impression that, as an M.D., she would be more qualified to evaluate me than an optometrist. Perhaps I just picked the wrong ophthalmologist but the fact is that she farmed out the contact lens exam to technicians who didn't know what they were doing and I walked out of there wearing a trial pair of lenses that over-corrected my eyes and made me feel nauseated. Her staff didn't seem to care about it and just shrugged their shoulders, telling me that it can take 2 weeks to get used to a new pair of contacts. Anyway, Dr. Soltys was wonderful. VERY thorough, very knowledgeable. I'll be going to him from now on. He listened to all my concerns, answered all my questions, and guess what... I'm actually wearing a pair of contact lenses that feel right. Thank you! Given that my insurance pays only for annual exams and that I had wasted my benefits on the ophthalmologist and her incompetent staff, I paid full price for my visit with Dr. Soltys but it was worth it. Yes, his office is in the mall but don't let that throw you. He's great. So is his staff. read more

The staff was friendly and helpful. I didn't feel rushed and it seemed like each person that I encountered, including the doctor, were ready to answer any questions I had. He explained to me everything I needed to know, and was very patient with me. Today I was scheduled for an appointment at a competitor. When I arrived I was told I could not be seen becuase the lens was broken and I was referred to the Barton Creek Optical. There I was accepted as a walk in for Dr. Soltys, WOW, so glad my original appt did not work out. Dr. Soltys was so awesome! His office and staff were so friendly and helpful and very clean. I had alot of questions becuase it was my first time there and with a new medical plan. They took time to answer my questions and I am sure this will be my new office from now on! So cool! read more

This place was quick and thorough. The experience was far better than what I've received at other places, and so far, the results have exceeded my expectations! I have type 1 diabetes, so the staff recommended that I do their 'eye-mapping' ($39) to check for diabetic problems because I've had diabetes for 17 years. I'm glad I did, because they emailed the image to my doctor, and to myself, so that we can track any problematic changes that could be occurring in my eyes. read more

I didn't find anything special about this place. I've been to many eye clinics but this one is not my favorite. I didn't see Dr. Soltys, even though I scheduled my app with him, they assigned another Doc to see me. There are several doctors that work there. read more
