TLDR: food ok, not great. Service and environment good.
Now into the fun details about the food and everything else.
We came for my cousins birthday and the first thing you notice is that it is located on the water. The restaurant was nice on the inside and out and we were kindly greeted as we entered.
We were served cornbread, fried cornbread, and almost like a gingerbread cornbread that was paired with a honey butter. We ordered fried green tomatoes and fried alligator appetizers to start off. I wasnt a fan of the fired cornbread, but the gingerbread one was moist and a bit different than the norm, so I liked that one the best. The fried green tomatoes were good. Thick slices of tomato with a tasty and well seasoned batter, I didnt really have any complaints. The alligator was served with a sweet dipping sauce and to be honest, the batter was too much for the gator. It was similar to the tomato slices, but with smaller pieces of meat, the batter and seasoning was overpowering. The dipping sauce was interesting, but I wasnt a fan of it - not to say there was necessarily anything wrong with it.
I ordered the low country boil, which was a large seafood mix that consisted of snow crab, crawfish, shrimp, sausage, potatoes, mussels, clams, corn, and onions. From the reviews I read, they were correct; the boil needed more flavor. There was a light sprinkle of old bay or some kind of cajun seasoning on top, which I'm sure I could have gotten more if I asked, but more would have helped spice it up. The crawfish was a bit overcooked and for the price, I felt like it could have really used more shrimp (I had 4 or 5).
My cousin ordered a mixed seafood platter blackened. It came with a nice piece of mahi, 3 large scallops, 4 shrimps, a crab cake and a set of mixed veggies. I heard the mac and cheese is supposed to be good and it looked great, but it was terrible, as in dont ever get it terrible. It had plenty of cheese sauce, which was mildly cheesy, but the noodles were literally mush. Maybe it was a bad day, but yea... i only had a small taste, but the crab cake was alright. My cousin felt there was too much blackening seasoning, but I think that was preference as I felt it was ok. The mahi was good, tasty and not overcooked. The scallops could have used another 20 seconds of cooking, they were a little rare for my liking. I didnt have the shrimp, but I'll assume they were ok as my cousin ate those up no problem.
Looking at some of the other meals, my cousin got the catch of the day. I suggested he get grouper and he said it was delicious. Looking at the plate, he got two really nice sized filets and had no complaints with his meal. My other cousin got a fish sandwich, which looked good, but I didnt try it. She also got mac and cheese, but it was just as bad as the first one I tried.
Overall, I enjoyed the time I had at the restaurant. Nice people with an enjoyable ambiance and decent food. After my meal I walked around the docks outside and enjoyed a little bit of sunlight before I left. If I knew about it before I ordered, i would have gotten the gator ribs, but my original choice was going to be the ahi tuna salad, which looks absolutely delicious in the pictures. Anyway, I would say the restaurant is worth trying, but it could be hit or miss on your meal. read more
