Stopped by Atulea and ordered an Ube Latte with Hojicha, which was really tasty and a fun flavor combination. The only downside was that it was a bit sweeter than I would have liked, and unfortunately sweetness can't be customized. At around $10 for a drink, it's definitely on the pricier side, which is the main reason for the 4 stars. 1. This is our go to boba place. They freshly cook their boba and they have the right balance of chewiness are sweet but not too sweet. The quality of the drinks has been very consistent. 2. If you order Matcha or Hojicha (roasted green tea and my favorite) you can watch them make it to order. I like the Hojicha iced Americano with boba, the black sesame latte and the strawberry latte (they make their own strawberry purée) 3. Hands down, Atulea is my favorite tea and boba cafe in Seattle! It's the only boba cafe I know of that serves hojicha which is roasted green tea and I like it much more than matcha. My go-to is the Americano made with hojicha, served iced, with 25%-50% sugar (depending on how I feel), with boba added. I have been here numerous times and the staff are always friendly, nice, and efficient. The place is clean and cute. There's a window counter with high chairs and a small cafe table and two chairs outside. Not a lot of seating but since most people take their drinks to go, I've always been able to find a seat if I want to chill for a while. So far, I've brought my hubs and two different friends here, and everyone has enjoyed their drinks. If I had my choice, I'd make everyone meet me here for future meetups because I love it so much. The matcha scene is growing quickly in Seattle, and Atulea has been on my list for a while. I finally stopped by on a rainy Sunday morning and was greeted warmly. Their menu is extensive, with everything from banana lattes to milk teas, classic teas, and rotating seasonal specials. I ordered the Sea Salt Creamy Matcha and it was delicious! Prices are a bit on the higher side, but pretty standard for Seattle. After tip the drink was just under $10. I also appreciate that they don't charge extra for alternative milks which was a nice touch. The café itself is quite small with about four bar stools, so I'm hoping they add more outdoor seating once the weather warms up. The pastries were already sold out during my visit, so I'll definitely be back to try one next time! read more

I found this spot just before heading to yoga. I was immediately attracted to the fact that they had an ube latte. It was cute and so clean inside. I ordered the ube latte hot and with whole milk. Cute cafe serving Asian-inspired coffee/tea drinks right across the street from Ben's Bread. Drinks are in the $5-8 range, and they offer three unique shot options: espresso, hojicha, and matcha. Atulea might be the only place in the city you can get boba before 11AM. Note they open at 8, but the boba isn't actually ready for service until a bit past 10, at least according to the sign on the door. This shop seems to get pretty busy: while we were the only ones inside at 10AM, soon after we ordered, another 5 parties walked in. The bobarista was super friendly - we had a ton of questions and he was very patient with us. We eventually settled on two drinks: Black Sesame Latte, Iced, Hojicha, 2% Milk ($6.75) - Very strong black sesame flavor. The drink needs to be continuously stirred to distribute the ground sesame, otherwise it settles on the bottom and creates a heavily sesame flavored syrup on the bottom, and a roasty hojicha on the top. Then again, mixing it up makes the sesame flavor completely cover up the hojicha flavor, so perhaps it's okay to let it settle? Sweetness level is not too sweet for me, which is good. Full ice level is heavy on the ice. (4/5) House Milk Tea, 50% Sugar w/ boba ($6.50) - The barista warned us that the sweetness levels here are not nearly as sweet as a normal boba shop, and I can attest to that. At 50% sugar, it's less sweet than 25% sugar at the average boba place, which works well for me. This drink is just slightly sweet, mixed with a Yunnan tea that tastes a bit spiced, a little like cloves, cinnamon, cardamom. Based on the all the tea brewing machines I saw behind the counter, I thought the tea would be fresh brewed to order, but instead, I saw the barista take a pitcher of pre-mixed milk tea, then add some additional half and half, and a couple of squirts of sweetener syrup inside. I forgot to to ask for ice level adjustment, so there's a ton of ice included. The boba here is decent, especially for a shop that doesn't specialized in boba. It's a bit on the softer side, with a bounce that isn't that pronounced. The exterior is soft and velvety, but it doesn't seem like the boba is soaked in any syrup; it's not very flavorful at all. So happy to have a bubble tea spot north of downtown, and a bit further west (not the U-district)! My go-to is the Black sugar hojicha oat latte (with boba). So good! Not THAT many places have hojicha so I'm happy that Atulea offers it. I love this drink so much that I rarely branch out but there are many other options! The staff is friendly and patient with questions. The space is bright and airy and very aesthetic, but there are only a few places to sit (at the counter facing the street). I'd recommend this as more of a grab and go type place. Also love that they sometimes host pop-ups (different small businesses offering food/dessert items) which is great! Love the collaborations and small businesses helping each other. My only minor points of feedback are: the matcha wasn't very strong the one time I ordered a matcha/black sesame drink. I had been eyeing the Phinney Ridge spot for Atulea's second location and awaited its opening. Finally, I had the opportunity to stop in on 2/17/24. It's getting a bit tough getting street parking on this stretch on Phinney Ave N - lots of nearby popular spots! I ended up selecting an iced hojicha milk tea without boba from a very upbeat counter person. Love the interior decor, natural light, and overall enthusiastic vibe. Nice addition to the Greenwood - Phinney Ridge north/south corridor. Lots of new spots opening around the same time frame as Atulea. I definitely appreciated the pronounced hojicha taste. PHINNEY RIDGE FINALLY GOT A BOBA/TEA SPOTTT!!! and the best part is...it's GOOD! Heres wussup: *all those fun latte options can be made with either matcha or espresso *all drink options (milk tea included) can be made with any of the alternative milks, free of charge. Sweetness is adjustable for all drinks too *boba becomes less of a eco-moral debate as they have reusable cups for sale, and all straws (boba ones too!) are compostable, cups are recyclable *staff was super knowledgeable and patient & helpful in my indecision The ube matcha had incredible flavor, and the lychee rose was floral and delicious. I met up with a friend here today. Service was very friendly and I had a good time. The store is west facing so you get a nice natural light in the afternoon. The interior is cute and there are good comfy seats to hang out. I got the matcha strawberry latte with boba - the strawberry sauce's color was quite bloodier looking than what I expected but it was nice that it wasn't overly sweet. I felt the sour/tanginess of the strawberry than sweetness and I wished it was a bit sweeter. Matcha had a nice consistency to it and wasn't chalky. Boba is on the softer side (not as soft as the one at Yi Fang) and I thought they were good quality. Went to Atulea's new location in Phinney Ridge! The one in Capitol Hill has never disappointed me, so I was looking forward to coming here while I was up north. This location was a bit smaller than the Capitol Hill one but I like how they have bar seating here. The aesthetic was BEAUTIFUL. I love their green neon sign! It was so unique. I got the Dirty Matcha and my wife got a Strawberry Matcha. We both enjoyed our drinks, the matcha quality at Atulea is unmatched.
