The weather was beautiful and I ate dinner here with a friend last night. It was delicious!! The service was great, even through the outside patio was mostly full. We ate some delicious fresh food. They offer a happy hour menu and I tried the salmon sashimi and fried oysters. YUM!! I also had tonkatsu and the Super Dynamite Roll. The salmon was fresh and the fried oysters had a nice crunch on the outside but soft and perfectly cooked inside. The tonkatsu was crunchy and the sauce was delicious. My favorite was the roll as it was really tasty and surprisingly a large, generous portion. Prices were comparable with the area. They have limited indoor seating and take your temperature as you go inside (even the bathroom). The downside is they do not take reservations for the patio as it is first come first serve. One of the best sushi restaurants in the N. Virginia area. I've come here both socially and professionally and never left disappointed. Reasons to go to Ariake: #1: The fish. Always fresh, well made rolls/nigiri, great balance between the sushi rice and fish. #2: Even when crowded (which is, like, always) you can have a conversation with the people around you. I'm not sure what it is about some of the other restaurants in the area but hearing can be a real struggle. #3: The extensive menu. Perhaps you're coming with someone who will only eat fish. Or who has an allergy. Or doesn't eat sushi at all. Or looking to enjoy a liquid lunch. There are plenty of other delicious options to choose from ensuring everyone will go home happy. Reasons you might not go to Ariake: #1: It's booked up! So sorry - perhaps next time. #2: You cannot figure out how to navigate to the weird armpit of land in which its located. Just remember: take three left turns after turning off Reston Parkway. #3: There is no parking and you end up back on Reston Parkway because that's how the flow works. I hear you, I've been there. Saw this closeby when I was looking at food places nearby and Ariake was actually pretty close; surprised that I never actually took the time to go here to be honest haha. They have their own parking lot which can get full pretty quickly but we lucked out and got a spot! Went in and got a table for two people pretty quickly. Went for these: Chirashi Bowl - Assorted sashimi on a bed of seasoned rice ($14.95) Deluxe Sushi Lunch - Tuna, albacore, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, and 6 pc Spicy Tuna Roll ($15.95) The bowl came with a soup and salad, both of which were not really all too memorable. Soup wasn't oversalted, so that's a good thing. The food actually came out pretty quick. The chirashi bowl at first glance looked really close, similar to the main partition of a bento box haha. But it's actually packing more than it looks haha. The fish selection is pretty fresh and stacked on top of a good chunk of rice. The fish is also cut really thick as well haha (the tuna and salmon especially). Their spicy tuna roll is so so and has sauce to it to quench ya from the heat. All of the other fish here were in the chirashi bowl for me and so that was the only diff. I think the thing is that for the area, the quality here is pretty good and the price definitely mirrors that. For lunch prices, they are still reasonable but I saw some of the dinner prices and it was kinda appalling. Yes they might have more but for double the price? Yikes. The chirashi bowl was $29.95 for dinner and I was kinda like damn... Their service here is on and off; they disappear here and there and you kinda have to get their attention before they come over. Ariake is the great spot for sushi! Had a selection of nigiri and the tuna tataki. The fish is very fresh! The spicy salmon roll was actually spicy, which was refreshing! I hate when restaurants state something is spicy when it's really not. The service was great. The hostess and waitress/waiter were very polite and quick. They did a great job pacing when they brought out food and when they took away plates. In terms of covid, all staff wore masks and they sanitized areas frequently. Nigiri: - toro (fatty tuna): amazing, melt in your mouth. market price when we went was $7 per piece (which we didn't find out until the bill whoops) - salmon: very good, solid marbling - fatty salmon: amazing, fresh - scallops: super silky and buttery - octopus: a little too done, average texture - white eel: solid, a bit too fishy though - unagi: also great, but not remarkable Sushi/Chef's special: - eel/cucumber roll: just okay, not really worth it. The eel was too fishy and didn't taste very fresh - spider roll (fried soft shell crab): the roll was honestly just too large and unwieldy. The soft-shell crab was overpowered in flavor by the rest of the stuff, and didn't taste very different than other tempuras. It would've been better if the legs were fried individually instead of all together in a large clump - Reston roll (shrimp tempura): very solid all around! This restaurant was a great surprise. Our server Nancy was polite, helpful and hospitable. The sushi was fresh and they unique combinations. They even brew their own soy sauce which is delicious and adds a special touch to the sushi. The environment is welcoming, not over crowded and the noise level was also great. Sometimes the restaurants cram so many tables in that the noise level is unbearable. I understand that they need to have volume however this restaurant seems to pay attention to detail and provide all of the things to make it a unique and lovely experience. Coming into the restaurant I felt very welcome from. I was attended very promptly. I ended up sitting at the sushi bar and ordered directly from the chefs. I ended up ordering a seafood soup and sushi. The seafood soup combines fish, salmon, shrimp, vegetables, and rice noodles. This combination of food made for delicious broth. The soup looked lively and fresh. Overall, my experience with this dish was over the top. The two sushi rolls I ordered were the Ariake rolls and the Shrimp Tempura rolls. Consistently good sushi! This spot is our local go-to for great sushi, whether it's carry out or dining in. Carry out has become a bit confusing, as I've been told (via phone) that they only do orders online during certain times and then they want you to call the order in other times. Regardless, the sushi has come perfectly packaged up and tasty! The order is consistently ready before the quoted time, so make sure to be a bit early. Dining in has always been pretty easy and we've never had to wait too long. There is a nice outdoor space perfect for nice days. While the inside isn't super big, it's also not cramped. Service is always friendly and prompt and there are high chairs available for the kiddos. I'm a huge tuna fan and the quality of their various tunas are great. Dinner can get a bit pricey, but that's to be expected (I think) for a sushi dinner. They also have great bento boxes and noodles for those who aren't into raw fish, so there's something to please everyone. read more

Leaving DC to move to the suburb was hard because of the amazing sushi the city offers. You might think this is ridicule but nothing beats a good sushi spot and they are hard to come by. I have given this restaurant five stars in the past, I've been a loyal customer for over 15 years, but after eating there recently with another couple, my opinion has changed. The atmosphere is lacking, the service was bad, the bathroom has instructions mounted to the toilet tank on how to stop the water from running (a ten minute repair could fix that) the soap was watered down "pink stuff" and the food is average. It's just not what it "used to be" which was a local hidden gem. So, let's get down to the details: We arrived at 8:15 on a Saturday evening -four adults. We promptly ordered four appetizers/salads and a soup plus sake and beers, and one green tea-- it's clear we are here to spend money. Before I forget, that green tea was never refilled, not even once. We also ordered a mess of rolls and sushi and one $29 sashimi entree. I think we are now well over $200 before tipping- but our waitress cannot remember to bring us plates, the soy sauce container is empty (I had to grab one from another table myself) and even then we didn't have the dishes to put it in! This is the stuff you do before the food arrives, if the staff needs some training, please feel free to reach out to me lol, seriously. Okay, so after we ordered the first round of food, we had already been informed it was last call, so it's like 9:00pm now. The restaurant is still pretty full but sure, let me know mid meal that my business isn't even appreciated, nice added touch for an already below average experience. I know if you got this far, you're wondering about the tip, always over 20% regardless, but truly undeserved. Attitude was pretty poor and I think most people in that role do a better job even if they are suffering a major personal loss. The one thing the staff was "good" at was making a lot of noise while hurrying to clean the place up so they can leave! There are a lot of great places to eat sushi these days close by, Passion Fin is amazing. And Vienna has good options as well. My husband and I decided to try a new sushi spot 26 min away in Reston. I'm convinced there's no good sushi in Leesburg. Came upon this amazing place. Beautiful little restaurant, well staffed. We came at 6pm on a Saturday (it was homecoming) we got seated right away, soon after everyone started coming in. This place gets busy, but they can handle it! They had 5 sushi chefs working and a ton of waitstaff. We never needed to ask for anything. They were on top of refilling drinks, and asking if we need anything else. Service was fast! Sushi is super fresh and tasty. I never had a spicy tuna roll that wasn't chopped up tuna in a roll! This was a generous solid slice of fresh tuna with all the tastiness of a spicy tuna roll. They have sushi/sashimi combination dinners as well as other main entrees. My daughter loved their steak teriyaki. For dessert she got the red bean mochi- I didn't get one bite... she devoured it within 2 minutes! I will be driving back here for sushi anytime! Totally worth it! Well...we finally got to Ariake---and we're glad that we did! Before coming here, I read the reviews and many spoke of the small parking lot. As we approached it, I wondered if it only had something like 5 or 6 spots. Fortunately, it is bigger than that. However, we arrived on a Saturday shortly after they opened for dinner at 5 p.m. Already, the place was filling up. We had no problem finding a parking spot. As we left, about an hour later, the lot was just about full. The dining room is cramped but it does have the feel of a Japanese restaurant when regarding the decor. Service was prompt and friendly. To drink, I had water while my husband had an Asahi beer. For dinner, we both ordered the Maguro box (which really isn't in a box but a rectangular plate with sides). This dish consists of: "4 pcs. of sashimi, 4 pcs. sushi, tuna roll and spicy tuna salad". It also comes with a bowl of miso soup and a salad. The miso was nicely flavored. The salad was simple---iceberg lettuce and some shredded carrot with a creamy ginger-based dressing which provided nice flavor. We both thought the quality of the tuna was excellent. The spicy tuna was served in a sauce that had undercurrents of sweetness to it which helped to tamp down the spiciness somewhat. Also, in this dish was a small portion of seaweed salad, some daikon and a generous helping of ginger on the side. Dinner cost $70 before the tip. It is possible to eat for cheaper than that. In addition, it took 45 minutes to get our dish with a restaurant at about 75% capacity. We frequent this restaurant and there was another time where we easily waited 1.5 hours for food and got nothing but "I'm sorry" and a free edamame. Food here, is always good. If you don't mind a long wait/slow service, would provide a rating of 4.5-5. The wait has become ridiculous though. We have eaten here many times due in part proximity to our home. Last 4 or 5 times, we've waited almost 90 minutes for take out (their original estimate was 60) and same for dining in. If they are understaffed (there seems to be 4-5 sushi chefs working, which seems adequate) then take fewer orders/diners, or advise people of the wait times. But I find these wait times ridiculous. Having been to the other location in Fairfax, this one is amazing as well!! I love the variety of bento box options and their sushi deluxe has the perfect nigiri pieces! 4.5 stars! So I do judge a Japanese restaurant when it's not small. Typical good authentic ones are supposed to be small. Ariake is very spacious but still a GREAT option for some good authentic Japanese food/sushi. Yoshi in Vienna will still be my favorite but this is a good backup when Yoshi is crowded or out of the way. The only con to this place is the price. It's a little pricey but the sushi are fresh and good quality. We were upset to see that chirashi is $30 when it's typically $20. Come during 5-6:30pm for their happy hour deals from Monday to Thursday! I got to try their seaweed salad and miso soup. The miso soup they gave to us for free to make up for the wait since sushi takes a while to prepare. They're very attentive and care about their customers!! I also had Spicy Salmon Roll which was good and very filling actually. Also had fatty salmon (Sake), scallop (Hotategai), and sea urchin with quail egg (Uni with Uzura). I really enjoyed the scalllop and uni. There was two different uni: one from Maine ($6) and one from Japan ($10). I felt like the Japan one was definitely more creamy and fresh, but not sure worth the extra $4. But both the scallop and uni melts in your mouth unnnfgfggg.
