Ariake! Simply the best sushi in Reston! With decor so chic and intimate, you may find it hard that Ariake used to be a McDonalds, but that's what my husband, a Reston native, tells me. Really quite the Jared from Subway transformation (before he got all creepy.) Ariake has never let me down. I've gotten all different sorts of items, from hot appetizers to bento boxes to sushi a la carts and sashimi combos. They have high quality, fresh fish. Their lunch boxes offer an amazing deal. The atmosphere is perfect for date night. They offer a good deal of beer, wine, and sake, too. And they now have a location in Fairfax off 236, too. read more

Awesome restaurant for sushi. I ordered the $60 Omakase sushi experience which has 14 pieces of sushi. All are premium fishes rather than ordinary salmon, eel etc. The sushi was made well and tasted awesome. My wife ordered the sashimi regular and the fishes were very fresh and tasty too. Their appetizer though was average. But I'll definitely come back for more sushi experience. The service was not too good though. Because it's a busy restaurant, the waitress was extremely busy and we asked many times to refill our drink and she got annoyed and said she'll do it when she got chance. I think maybe they could add more staff to ease that. read more

The staff here is very nice. Some of the best miso soup I have ever had. Impressed that the spicy salmon and spicy tuna have big pieces of fish and not minced scraps of leftover fish. The fish on the nigiri was top notch. It's not the cheapest but the quality is excellent. read more

My family are BIG fans of sushi and we tried many different sushi establishments across the DC metropolitan area over the years. We tried Ariake this week and all agreed the food was excellent and their sushi is among the very best we've tried in the DC area. Their sushi was delicious, rice was well-packed that didn't fall apart, and VERY flavorful! My boys and I had the sushi deluxe while my wife had the unagi don...awesomely prepared and delectible! Our taste buds were ecstatic! I would rate the food alone as 6+ or better. Sadly, they get dinged on service...their service was awful. We spent somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour waiting for our dinner with no advance warning of the delay. The waitress was mostly AWOL and couldn't be found when we wanted refills for our hot tea or obtain a status on our dinner. When our waitress did show up, she was gracious and professional...but again, only when she cared to show up at all. Bottom line: Food = 5, service = 3 for an overall score of 4. This place offers the best sushi you'll ever find in the DC area...but you have to wait a REAL long time to get it. Bring a book, magazine or newspaper. read more

the inside of the restaurant was cute, open dining room with minimalistic japanese decor. it was a bit of a tight squeeze though as the tables are really close together. my friend got sushi and i got tonkatsu. the tonkatsu sauce was way too sweet, couldn't use it but the pork itself was pretty good. my friend really liked her sushi. it wasn't the best japanese food but it was good, just plain. read more

Great spot to get your Japanese/sushi fix. I had the Chirashi bowl which is basically a variety of sushi with rice on a big bowl. I like it a lot and would recommend it. The portion size was generous so I got very full from that and I eat a lot. There's plenty of seating outside as well. The service was decent too. Would be nice if they offered fountain soft drinks instead of cans to get refills but overall it's a pretty good restaurant. read more

Every time I visit home my parents are kind to take me to my favorite sushi place Ariake! It was again another home run of amazing sushi and sashimi Sushi is amazing - it melts in your mouth, and everything is so so good. The fish is so fresh, it reminded me of my times in Japan :) the uni, toro, Ika, ikura.. everything is delicious! There isn't a single dish that I haven't loved. I highly recommend this place for anyone craving a good sushi place. The service is amazing as well! It was really busy on a wed evening but the servers were quick to get us seated and take our orders. They're so kind and always checking in on us to make sure we're happy as well. There is no other place in northern Virginia that I would go to get sushi other than Ariake :) love it and will keep coming back! read more

I can tell that they are actually smiling behind their masks and definitely made my family felt welcome. Hubby and I got a table on the patio and when each of us when inside to use the restroom, many staff including the sushi chef looked up, said hi, and asked if they could help us with anything. Our family of 2 plus a little shared the crispy tofu appetizer, bento box with sashimi added, and udon. The sushi was fresh, tasty, and had a good fish/rice portion. Different parts of the bento box were very yummy but the spinach ate unnecessarily sweet - just some seasame oil, seasame seed, and soysauce would have been delicious enough. The Udon was light yet tasty and portion was big. We were sooo full after the meal and still had tons of leftovers to bring home. Pro-tip, the restaurant got incredibly busy around dinner time on Saturday ( there was a line when we left at 6pm) and they don't take reservations so if you would like an outdoor table, make sure to come before the dinner rush to avoid the wait. read more

We usually get sushi here to go. Sunday nights were my hubby and my sushi nights. They're the closest sushi venue to us that has the better sushi. The food is usually prepared quick and the sushi is descent. Not the best sushi we have had but it's still good. I think some of the specialty rolls are a bit overpriced; especially if they come with imitation crab meat and not the real stuff. Now that our baby is older, we decided to dine in for the first time. To our surprise, our baby wasn't the only little person on Sunday night. There were plenty of kids. We can easily see how Ariake is a neighborhood spot for families. Dine in service was quick and attentive. Sushi was good as we expected. I ordered an udon dish here for the first time and I loved it. I highly recommend the nabeyaki udon if you're an udon lover like me. The chicken base broth is sweet. It comes with a shrimp tempura, egg, chicken, shiitake mushrooms, and spinach - all of my favorite foods to make the perfect bowl of noodles. I wish they had a kid's menu with more simple (fish, vegetables), cooked, and smaller portion size dishes for toddlers and kids. My friends and I had tried the newer fairfax location and we had to check out the original! Outside they have a beautiful fountain area with outside seating (it was a bit chilly that day so everyone was inside). and it was packed! And I can definitely see why! As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the chefs and the hostess showed us to our table right away. Our waiter (the only guy there I can't remember his name, very tall) took our order very quickly and was very fast. He was super polite and friendly. My friend pointed out our waiter was also answering the phone line and taking care of his tables at the same time and we all watched in awe for a little bit. Incredibly proficient! Compared to their other location in fairfax this one seemed much busier, however the quality and service were incredible! I don't think we had to ask for our water or hot tea to be refilled once during our entire dinner. We ordered the omakase for two ($90) and some a la carte and ton katsu to share. The Ton katsu was light and perfectly crispy. The omakase was beautiful and everything tasted amazing! The botan ebi and uni was one of the most freshest I've ever had from a sushi Restaurant. Overall this restaurant did not disappoint either. Both locations are amazing and they all do such a good job. I did see that the Reston one has some more menu items which I found interesting and I'm excited to try. This location is a little smaller but it's cozy and clean. I guess it's a win win cause you can just drive over to fairfax if it's too full and still get the same quality and service! read more

The restaurant is typically packed but normally I don't have to make a reservation to get a table. The parking lot is a little small. Overall the ambiance inside is really nice and well decorated. After spending several days in the Land of the Rising Sun last year, I have made it a point to avoid any and all Japanese restaurants in the United States of America. No I'm not racist; rather, I appreciate the people and the food so much in Japan that everything else here in the U.S. just pales in comparison. Their level of service and attention to detail is beyond anything you've ever seen. Now admittedly, the price has a big influence on my reasoning, but to say that you can find better sashimi and the accompanying service in Northern Virginia than in Tokyo, is like saying you can find better beer in Australia than in the United States (sorry Aussie's, Foster's just doesn't cut it). Now Ariake. Lucky for my Yelp friends and followers that I decided to make an exception, because now you have a solid Japanese restaurant that's fully approved by none other than me. Having heard some good things about their new place in Fairfax, I instead went to their Reston (the OG) to see what the deal is. Pricey? Yes, as is most Japanese places. Quality? Also a yes, hands down the best sushi and nigiri I've had in Northern Virginia. To me, it was much better than the other place in Vienna that has been held up on a pedestal all these years. Being my first time at Ariake, you know I had to go all in on the sushi and the fresh cut raw fish. Pass on the tempura, pass on the teriyaki, pass on anything cooked. Let's be honest, if you're going to call yourself a Japanese restaurant, your raw fish better carry you to the finish line. The S.O. and I opted for a platter full of sushi and nigiri sushi - maguro, hamachi, toro salmon, followed by some of their chef special rolls to include the Ariake Roll, which was one of the favorites. All the fish tasted supremely fresh, nothing was "off" and everything was "on." My tastes buds were firing on all cylinders, with flashbacks to my time in Tokyo and Kyoto, but alas I was paying several times more money and it was ever so slightly just not the same. Service was attentive but not overbearing. The one thing that did but a small damper on things was that it probably took about 25-30 min for us to get our sushi, while the rest of the table was well on their way to finishing their meals by the time we got our food. Admittedly, we ordered a lot, but perhaps they should try to stage the food so it comes all out generally within a few minutes of each other. TL;DR: Probably the best Japanese you can get in Northern Virginia. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it if you've got refined tastes for the best sushi and sashimi your taste buds can handle. While it's no Tsukiji fish market, it will be on my top recs for NoVA over other places with "Sushi" and a Nintendo character in the name as well. read more

While a great majority of my colleagues got bento boxes, I ordered the Florida roll ($14) and it was DELICIOUSSS!! The salmon just melted in my mouth like butter. Our waitress tried to be attentive. It was super busy and she tended to many tables but I was slightly annoyed that she took my miso soup away before I was done with it. It was only on the table for maybe 1-2 mins tops, I'd only taken a sip... what a waste. I would've told her I was still working on it but my head was turned towards my coworker that I didn't see her. I have been to Ariadne many times over the last 10+ years and it's my favorite sushi joint. I feel at home when I go there to eat and their fish is super fresh. The price is high but you get what you pay for and they have lots of variety. They also have uni (one of my favorite) from California, Main and Japan. If you like Wagu beef, they usually have that as well (however a bit greasy to our taste). When it's not too hot, you can dine outdoor. Ariake is by far one of my favorite sushi places of all time. First, they now have online ordering, which makes getting sushi to go very convenient. They are also one of the few restaurants that I've seen that is taking the pandemic seriously. Social distancing, masks, etc. Second, the quality of the fish is always incredibly high (especially the salmon but I also love salmon). For a birthday celebration, we ordered the 30 piece nigiri (chef's choice), a super dynamite roll, spicy shrimp tempura roll, and a rainbow roll to share and plated it at home. As you can tell, Ariake does not skimp on the quantity or quality of the fish. This was also our first introduction to nigiri (before we exclusively ate maki rolls) and we're hooked now. Overall, this is an excellent restaurant! Only downside during normal, non-pandemic times is the parking. Usually they're packed and the parking is sparse. Otherwise, I can not recommend Ariake high enough. read more

We got drinks and their sake selection is quite larger than other local sushi joints. The fried goyza in the beginning was very tasty and so were the fried oysters. I enjoyed my rolls, especially the roll with the eel, cream cheese, and shrimp tempura. All the speciality rolls rule and were quite large. I think the fish quality was some of the best I have had, with the tuna actually being a nice dark, red color.
