So, I finally took a second byte of the Apple... my first byte was of an Apple ][c that used a 5.25" floppy drive and a 9" green/black screen yet it had a handle and was "portable". And, unadjusted for inflation, cost about the same as my new Mac Book Pro 13". Now that my purpose and outcome have been stated, how was the experience at the Store?
Overall, it was almost like the purchasing a Saturn Car when GM rolled out the brand: no haggle experience but with computer technology instead of automotive.
There is no "custom" ordering of an Apple laptop computer at the Store: They have a number of different models with standard configurations.
The store itself encourages you to "test drive" the device before you buy. And I did just that: For my first trip, I just used the various laptops and devices and asked questions when I could of the busy reps. It's nice for the first time Mac purchaser; while I am a UNIX person, still, the value for non-techies cannot be overstated to just use the systems in the store. When was the last time you could do that with a PC? Even Best Buy doesn't have the layout and spacing really go through the paces with it's PC offerings and the Best Buy Apple Store doesn't encourage it either.
On my second trip, convinced I will change the world if I purchased a MacBook Pro 13", I went in a week later. However, on the 2nd trip there was a curious line outside the Mac Store. At first, I thought it was for the Art Display to mean the artist, but then I saw the rep calling people into the store. Then, I saw the sign for the iPhone 4 line.
Anyway, I went in and did a final inspection of the Mac, then realized I had to sign up to get a sales person with the concierge. Later, I saw I could have signed in on one of the floor display Macs. So, about 15 mins later, the same person who had helped me a week earlier came to help. He remembered me and the questions I asked. We confirmed I was eligible for an EPP discount, and we took care of business. I selected a neoprene case. He didn't push the add-ons too hard as he recalled from the previous week what my purpose was in getting the Mac :) 35 minuets after I arrived on a busy Wednesday night after work, I left with my new laptop.
Overall, it was a different kind of experience just as the Apple OS installed on it's devices gives a different kind of User experience. My only real gripes are: the store was busy for the staff they had available; as a new customer, the purpose of the line outside the store was distracting because it's purpose for iPhone 4 purchasing wasn't obvious due to poor sign placement ; and the concierge interface wasn't intuitive nor obvious to a new customer.
Yet, once I got the attention of the staff, they were friendly and knowledgeable. Overall, I am a happy mac owner as i type this 100th review up. And 15 days later, I am now passed the return policy! I still have it! read more
