I love this place. It's so cute, especially when it's warm enough for them to have all the windows open. It's a family run bakery with really tasty food and pastries. My friend ordered the mushroom toast. While a bit overpriced, it was truly delicious. Their pastries never disappoint. And Ellie, the owner was so very sweet to my young daughter when we came in. Anthos has become our go to for breakfast after church. The small gem on Castle Shannon Blvd. is a bright start to any day. The eggs your way comes with some of the best bacon we have ever tasted. The croque madame was fantastic!!! On another occasion I had the quiche Lorraine it was a melt in your mouth delight!!! The ambiance is like an upbeat coffee shop!! The service is always friendly!!! This place is a gorgeous little escape into Greece in Castle Shannon. Everything homemade with options from baked goods to breakfast to coffee to salads. I arrived a little after breakfast ended and they were kind enough to serve me a Greek yogurt bowl (tons of walnuts and fresh fruit)!!! We also got hummus, pita, salad, and macchiato. A few weeks ago, on a Sunday, at least 4 out of maybe 20 or so tables lingering, talking, visiting....I had to hover and stalk people that appeared to be leaving so we could sit and eat. We had good food, but the flow was a little weird in this restaurant and the service was off. We arrived before 10am, I was the only one in line, and I looked over the menu and made some selections. I approached the counter where a younger woman was working the register, and she greeted me by staring at me. I proceeded to tentatively start to order, and I had to ask her a couple of questions about the menu which she answered (like what is the fruit on the menu- ordering for a toddler). I ordered a coffee for myself and for my husband, but they didn't have what I ordered for my husband (cold brew) so I referred back to the menu and ordered a macchiato. She informed me that the macchiato was "not like Starbucks" and asked if I was sure I wanted it- not with a friendly tone or facial expression. There was no smiling, greeting, thank you, directions. She said the minimum amount of words needed to complete the transaction. It was awkward. It was not particularly busy or crowded when we visited. There isn't table service here other than to bring out your food/drinks- you should grab napkins/silverware yourselves (something that would have been helpful to know at the register when it was obvious that I didn't grab what my table needed). You also can't really see what's in the pastry case based on how you enter the line/the tables setup with goods to buy. Maybe some clear signage or rearranging could help. Our experience was just really put off by the younger woman working the register. I would not go back as I'm sure we could find similar food elsewhere. I work in customer service, and I know that people can be mean and ridiculous- I was not. I was friendly, said good morning, smiled, please/thank you, tipped 20%. read more

Went here for breakfast/brunch on a Sunday morning and I was surprised that it wasn't busier, because it was AMAZING. I had the croque madame and my husband had the eggs benedict. They were both delicious and so different from anything we've had at other breakfast places. Our family ordered the baklava and it was also out of this world (and I'm not even a huge fan of baklava). The lattes and cappuccinos tasted like they were made with high quality ingredients just like the food. All of the staff were very friendly. I will definitely be back! read more

Disappointed to order well ahead of a larger local group and they got their food before us and others that ordered ahead of us. It was the exact same items we ordered as well. castle shannon is finally getting on the map! mindful brewery helped get the ball rolling, but this place is AMAZING!!! i live close enough to see it, & yet i just went for the 1st time yesterday. silly me! so, me & 2 of my friends, jan & cheryl, went to check it out. we nabbed a parking spot right at the back door. we opened the door to a long hallway with noise coming ahead of us. we followed the din into a big, bright room. it was booming with people. & it was 11am! it was a little confusing as to where & how you ordered. they have the menu on chalkboards, but they're like on the floor & at the end of the line. the line starts at the beginning of the cases, then goes down to the chalkboards. as you go past the cases, you see more food, mostly what they make for that day's specials. i was going to get a salad until i walked by the cases. they had a tray of cheddar cheese & ham sandwiches, tho it was more like pastry. each of us got 1! i got a mocha, cheryl a regular coffee, & jan just had water, but she also ordered a spanakopita, which came with a side salad. in the hectic atmosphere, they forgot jan's spanakopita! didn't matter cuz she couldn't eat it. those sandwiches were filling! the sandwich was made with a croissant type bread. it was divine! the pastry was so soft. when you bit into it, you could see the inside. the wet looking inside of those beautiful, bubble like pockets made me think of the inside of a cream puff or a french crueller donut. we inhaled everyone of them! when jan did get her food to go, we looked inside the box. it looked wonderful! the spanakopita was large, & the salad looked great. the entire time we were there, people never stopped coming in. the place was packed. in fact, we left so someone else could sit down & eat! while we were in line earlier, we also noticed some bread for sale. we got back in line right before we left & got some bread. i got a cheese loaf & an olive loaf. i made a salad at home, added the bread, some wine, dinner! & it was delicious! the bread was chewy, but soft. each had an abundance of filling. the prices seem ok, maybe a little expensive. everything we got however, was $5 each! $5 sandwich, $5 bread! they have a niçoise salad that sounds really good, but not $22 for lunch. dinner for sure! speaking of which, they're only open til 4, so a really early dinner! &, they are byob, no charge! so yeah, tom & i will be going soon for that salad! this place is a goldmine! note to the boro-don't screw this up for us! get to stepping on parking!!! i can't wait to go back! i would suggest perusing the menu online before you get there too! & don't forget to look in those cases! p.s.-on parking. we've lived here since 1989. we've been told about a parking garage for the downtown area since then. as you see, we don't have 1. Great space! Great bacon! Our meal was great. All of the orders coming out looked yummy. Breads looked outstanding. Difficult to enjoy because the acoustics are terrible. Could not have a conversation because it was SO LOUD. Out of all the employees, only the lady taking orders smiled. (noise related?) I really want to like and revisit Anthos, but until they deal with the noise level, I probably won't. Wonderful atmosphere--felt like a Greek cafe! The food tasted fresh and original, a great local addition to the South Hills food scene.

Plus-food, and a great overall vibe -- but something is lost in translation here. I am not sure how long they have been open but the ownership/staff clearly still acclimating to the restaurant business. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I would recommend that the staff drink a cup or two to power through their shift. Everyone moving and thinking a little slowly. The owners look like they cast themselves in the part -- "young, ambitious, visionary, bootstrapping cafe owners" -- but they may not be built for the demands. Lots of lingering by the cappuccino bar rather than moving the pace along and tending to customers. I hope that they find their mojo. read more

The mushroom toast is amazing, savory pastry with sausage and bechemel delicious, and of course spanikopita......The service model is deli like, not heavy on table service or speed. This is a lovely Greek cafe right on the train line to downtown. That is how I spotted it-The Willow stop. They are not open in the evening at present so check on that. I tried their lentil soup and had salads on two occasions. Very good. I would say that their service is slow, they seem to be still working out the kinks on that but that will not prevent me from going back because it was so good. What an amazing find. I had met the owners in the farmer's market in Mt Lebo and was so struck by their desire to please that I couldn't wait to try them when they opened. Soo, the breakfast and lunch meals are amazing, the breads and pastries are delicious and the owners are a pleasure to talk to.
