Being from Chicago, we wanted something different from what we could find at home. Stopped in while visiting Austin for their happy hour menu. We ordered the char buff cauliflower, brisket rangoon, salmon poke, and jfc popcorn chicken. The menu overall is so unique and the collision of unique ingredients, flavors, and texture made it very enjoyable. I mean where else can you find a bbq brisket and cream cheese in a crispy wonton? That said, we didn't really like the salmon poke - was way too salty. The server happily took it off and got us something else. We were here during Thanksgiving week so we practically had the place to ourselves. Service was excellent. Why 5 stars? Because after the first bite of brisket rangoons, I knew what my rating would be. --- --- --- My brother visited Austin several months earlier and told me that I absolutely must visit Anthem. I'd been to Austin twice since then, but it just never worked out that I was able to go. For this most recent trip, I made sure that my first stop in the city would be Anthem. My brother recommended ordering The Cure, which is a collection of five shareable appetizers. There was only one problem. I was four people short of having five dining mates. I asked the brother what I absolutely must try and he recommended the Brisket Rangoons, the JFC Popcorn Chicken and the Miso Mac Daddy. So I sat at the bar and was kind of ashamed to ask the bartender a question, but I did it anyway: "Is order 3 appetizers just for me obnoxious, even if this is the only meal I'll eat all day?" She gave me a look that said, "I don't want to be rude, but yes, that's excessive." Before she could even fully answer, I relieved her of the tension and said, "yeah, it's probably a bit crazy, let me just get two." So I ordered the Brisket Rangoons and the Popcorn Chicken. As I said above, literally one bite of the brisket rangoons and my Yelp rating was set to 5, no matter what else happened during the meal. I love rangoons when they are done right. And I love brisket, pretty much always. The combination of the two was magical. The popcorn chicken was also awesome. I highly recommend both. But after I was done, I knew I could *definitely* eat more. I told the server I was a growing boy and she brought me out the Miso Mac Daddy. Of the three items, these were my least favorite, but they were still a solid 4.25 on the 1-5 scale. If I'm being honest, I wanted to try the Hong Kong Waffle for dessert, but I felt like I'd already pushed my luck and didn't want to have to go through the embarrassment and shame. We discovered this gem on our way to San Antonio. It is our new favorite restaurant! On Friday, we had the spicy, charred edamame. It was the tastiest we've ever had. Such great flavor and spice! Then my husband and I shared the coastal shrimp & fries. It was so perfectly fried with such good flavor. Our drinks was the frozen banana daiquiri, which was so tasty! We loved it so much that we stopped again on our way out of town. We got Sunday brunch. I had the breakfast tacos on flour tortillas and my husband had the JFC Chicken & biscuits and we started out with the spicy edamame again. Everything had great flavor. The tacos were spicy with the jalapeños and the chicken was so flavorful. We had the pineapple salad and curry breakfast potatoes as our sides. The breakfast potatoes were very good: great texture and flavor with a little spice. The pineapple was very forward on the basil, so probably my least favorite item. We had the strawberry mimosa, Far East Mary and then the Breakfast Martini. They are basically works of art! So flavorful and strong. We will come here again and again!! read more

We came in for dinner with a group of 8, with a few dietary restrictions that the staff accommodated so well! We got a fair bit of everything included mocktails like the Flower Child and cocktails including Mai tais in fun kitschy cups, appetizers including the cauliflower bites and the queso, and so many different entrees including the poke bowl, salmon, brisket rangoons, aloha burger, and more. It was a hot day (Austin, duh). And Rainey street is lively, bustling and with different live music at almost every venue it can get a bit loud! We came across a tiki bar sign and decided to stop. We were led inside (A/C!!!) to some nice tables with floor-to-ceiling windows where we could still people-watch, and feel like we were "On Rainey street" but didn't have to shout to converse, and we were sitting comfortably out of the sun and in the cool. There is a happy hour menu, and it was good! The drinks are strong. And the menu warns as much, encouraging you to "sip" and enjoy. The drinks were also delicious, some frozen, some partially frozen, some -- the Mai-Tai -- came in an Asian food to-go box! We ordered a few happy hour eats as well... the tofu was delicious! And the chips and guacamole was strait out of cali. Overall our experience here was quite enjoyable. The staff friendly, and the atmosphere was awesome. Definitely recommend! read more

Kinda wish we only got two things. Food was delicious, especially the salad. Cocktails were also really good. Highlight cocktail was the espresso martini with a very nice Francelico foam. Bottom Line: Fun tropical inspired cocktails. Interesting menu but flighty service. A group of six of us went to Anthem for a late Sunday lunch and cocktails. We sat on the patio which was super cute but loud since we could hear conflicting music from Anthem and the bar across the street. We had a light lunch of salads and shared apps and the Charr-Buff Cauliflower was my favorite food item. I also enjoyed a whimsical banana daiquiri and some vodka cocktail. Our server was super sweet and cute but gosh, I think she got about 40% of our order wrong. The result was several drinks and an app on the house so I guess that worked out in our favor. This Rainey St spot is trendy and has a live DJ. Music, bar, etc. nothing materially different than the other spots around the block. The Asian fusion idea was one that drew me in, especially the Chicken n waffle using "Hong Kong waffles" instead of traditional waffles. We actually took the order to go instead due to seating at full capacity (although there were some scattered open tables ) On to the most important part, the food! We had the noodle salad, the borderless salad with chicken, the chicken n waffles, the brisket Rangoon, the Mac daddy and chicken sandwich. - noodle salad - very regular. Ingredients were fresh but Nothing special in my mind - borderless salad - fresh and tasty with garlicky aioli dressing - chicken n waffles - yummy the chicken nuggets/tenders were a little suspect but dipped in the syrup and most importantly gravy! made it delicious. The HK waffles, actually direct translation is "egg kids" in Cantonese were a big hit especially with the kids (These street snacks are kid favorites in Hong Kong) - brisket Rangoon - most commonly raved about dish here. It was perfectly crispy, texture was excellent. Flavor was good but didn't blow me away like the other reviews. - Mac daddy - kind of like a takoyaki themed Mac and cheese infused ball instead of octopus. Cool idea but didn't work out that well. Personally, a little too much sauce. - chicken sandwich - nice slaw and the chicken was very tender (dark meat all day!). Much better than I expected. Overall, if it wasn't for the chicken n waffles, it would've been a solid 3 star but a 3.75 rounded it to 4! read more

I wasn't too amazed by this place. It's a tiki lounge, with some cool looking drinks, but the ambiance is lacking, especially for Rainey Street. When you think of a Rainey Street bar, you usually think of one of these old homes that have been converted into a funky bar with some real character. Instead, the Anthem is located in a new building that tore down a bunch of old homes with character. There's a nice patio with plenty of places to sit in the sun and watch all the construction going on around you. When I went, the bar was super busy. I hung out and hung out by the bar hoping to get a bartender's attention. They serve up tiki drinks in cups that resemble Chinese take-out containers. However, I ended up giving up after waiting for a drink for so long, and went to another place. They seemed seriously understaffed for the size of the event they were having. The bar is clean, with lots of fun things to look at that make it tiki-ish. It's not some tiki mecca or anything. There's plenty of bicycle parking out front on nice bike racks that the patio overlooks. Other than that, good luck with parking. read more

I'm a convert! I've been to Anthem a few times because of the location and cocktail program, but never really warmed to their island fusion food menu, however on a most recent trip, I flipped a 180. Went with a large group and we were forgotten about for the first 15 minutes but the staff quickly remedied that and brought out a few Pupu platters as a lovely gesture to say sorry. Because of that, I got to experience a handful of their starters and the standouts were the Brisket Rangoons, Shishito Pepper Queso, and Salted Charred Edamame. Their chips and guac were a crowd pleaser, as well. I also ordered their salmon poke bowl and it was super fresh and light - just the fish and seasoning, no rice or salad as a base. We got the ceviche which was more like a poke, the sweet potato waffle fries which were good, the queso which was really watery and the chips were extremely salty, the popcorn chicken with the sriracha sauce which were really good and the brisket rangoons which I think were the best. Found this place on a whim while out walking. Hubby and I weren't sure what we were doing for lunch, but Anthem stepped up to the challenge. Yes, it was convenient to our location, but itv also ended up being one of our fave meals during our vacation. Anthem is a tiki restaurant. Not even sure what that is, but I can tell you we like it! Hubby and I decided to have a few small plates to split. Here's what we close: Miso Mac Daddy - well this was absolutely amazing! These were better than your typical mac n cheese ball. Had a bit of an Asian swing to it. The panko was a wasabi pea, which had a slight heat but nothing overwhelming. Nothing drippy inside - it was the PERFECT balance of cheesiness. Wonderful, wonderful dish. Queso Loco - cheese dip with brisket and guacamole, served with chips. Wonderful as well! Kind of comforting, but a bit different at the same time. One of our favorite things to eat, and this version did not disappoint. Char-Buff Cauliflower - our favorite of the meal, which surprised us! Yes, it's cauliflower. But it's charred and deep fried. Nothing wrong with that! Very addicting, an absolute winner. If you get anything, get this! The atmosphere here was super nice. The green velvet booth we sat in made my heart swell. A cute sorta tiki lounge. Want a micro staycation? If you allow your imagination to suspend disbelief, Anthem could be a tiki lounge on one of the islands of Hawaii...without the airfare to get there. The decor of longboards, hula girl jiggle figurines, and tiki torches can transport you for an hour or two to a tropical paradise. The service was perfect! I unfortunately did not get the bartender's name, but he was prompt in greeting me, and offering to get me a drink to start my evening. My guy was parking the car so I ordered appetizers and drinks before HH ended. We had blood orange frozen margaritas which were delicious. We tried the fried cauliflower and some guacamole. Both had good sized portions and were tasty. Another bartender checked on us as she walked by, which was great. I love when everyone works together to provide excellent service. There were two hosts at the door to greet people- they were both professional, warm, friendly, and prompt as well. Good job, Anthem in choosing excellent staff. The decor was spot on. It felt upscale without the upscale prices. We sat at the bar, and the stools were comfortable enough to have a full meal if you were to choose to do so. SHISHITO PEPPER QUESO $7 - the queso was good but the shishito peppers did not add anything. Just think of it as good regular queso. HAPA CHICKEN SANDWICH $14 and HILO HAWAIIAN SANDWICH $17 - We got these two with an order of the sweet potato waffle fries and an order of FURIKAKE FRIES. Between the two sandwiches I liked the chicken one better. The hawaiian had a lot going on and frankly I think there was too much competition between all they ingredients for any one of them to stand out. Additionally I don't think it was worth $17. The chicken sandwich was simpler, but because of it I remember the chicken. Both types of fries were good. The Furikake didn't add anything to the regular fries. PIÑA OLD FASHIONED - I never order old fashioneds, but everything else I wanted from the happy hour menu was unavailable. I was not disappointed. it had a tasty dried ginger and pineapple garnish which I munched on and the drink itself was both strong and delightful!
