We've been wanting to try this place for a while. Especially due to the great reviews. We were in the area recently so we gave it a try. For the record, it's obviously very popular with locals as it was pretty full on a Tuesday at lunch. We found a table and decided to eat there instead of taking it to go. I asked the girl at the counter what their most popular sandwiches were, and she told us they were the falafel and the pita.... Which threw us for a loop because we'd come to try the hoagies. We ordered two traditional hoagies and were underwhelmed. They were not very flavorful at all. The bread was pretty good; we both really enjoyed that... soft and tasty. However, the meat had very little flavor at all, as if it had not been seasoned or marinated. We tried salt, pepper, and some of the hot sauce on the table to improve the taste, but it just wasn't there. This place is just not for us.

3.5 stars Ordered the corned beef sub with onions rings. Corned beef sub was really mediocre, very bland meat, shredded lettuce. I'm always on the lookout for good corned beef and pastrami, but this isn't it. I couldn't recommend that sandwich to a friend. The onion rings were pretty good, more of a thick batter style and thick cut onions so just depends on what you like. Seems like they're a little overrated. The service, order process, seating area are all excellent. I plan to go back and get the steak which seems to drive most reviews here, but based on this first experience, I'm not blown away yet.

We went to the Brainerd Road location, which is pretty easy to find even in a lot of traffic. They have a decent amount of parking, but the lot was full when we arrived. We drove around the side of the building and were able to park by the rear entrance door. There is easy handicapped access from the main lot, but it would be difficult if you need to park around the rear. Entering from the rear door, you'll need to walk through the dining area to order from the start of the line by the main door. They have a box with menus there, and the menu is also on the wall behind the counter. Specials are written on a small chalkboard by the front of the counter. Ordering was easy, and it took maybe 15 minutes to prepare. In addition to the dining area near the counter, there is another section through a doorway to the side. Seating is probably more than 50, and it was almost full when we were there. They also seemed to do a large take out business. We ordered take out, and everything was stapled into brown paper bags, which were then placed in a cardboard box. It was very secure for the ride home. Happily, nothing soaked through the bags, indicating it was both well packaged and not greasy. The Reuben sub uses good quality corned beef. It was pretty good, but could have used thousand island sauce. The club rider had really nice flavor and everything tasted fresh. It was a bit dry overall and would have benefited from a little more mayonnaise. The polish sausage special was nicely done with an abundance of grilled peppers and onions. The sausage was flavorful. The chicken fingers were also prepared well, with light breading. The meat was moist. The gyro plate provides a good portion of gyro meat with grilled onions and added seasoning along with a good portion of fries and a Greek salad. The meat was a bit dry but very well seasoned. The grilled onions were done perfectly as were the fries. The fries are crinkle cut and meaty. The salad seemed fresh and the Greek dressing added good flavor. The onion rings are a must order. They are home made and offer a good sized portion. The breading is light but sticks to the onion, and everything was cooked perfectly. The falafel had really good flavor and is well prepared. The consistency is a bit dry, but it does not crumble. The outside was a dark brown but was not burnt. That's just the way it comes. We also ordered the pecan queen, which is a pecan baklava. We asked which bag it was in as we planned to eat it before heading home. It had not been packaged, so it was good we asked or it would have been forgotten. Oh, it was excellent. Ankar's does a good job on their sandwiches and has a wide variety of choices. You can certainly find something you'll like.

This little hole in the wall place is AMAZING. Good was fresh and quick . Service was great and the restaurant was very clean . We're new in town and checking out the new places . Must try !!

Small, hole in the wall that sits off the road. If we didn't drive by it a couple of times a week, we probably would've never known about it. After being picked up from the airport around lunch time, we thought it would be a good time to try it out. Driving up to it, we realized quickly it was a hopping lunch spot. There were barely any parking spots remaining but we found one in the corner. Walking in, you could immediately tell it was a family owned and run establishment. Grandma was sitting at the table on the left just watching the lunch crowd. Her daughter was running around and the kids were working behind the register and in the kitchen. You stand in the que line and order at the counter. They give you a number and you wait for your food. We got ours to go. Pretty much all sandwiches/subs come either on a hoagie or pita which is a nice change up. The salads were large and everything looked amazing. I couldn't help but look around the room to check out other's food while waiting. Very fair prices and delicious food. It's always nice to support local restaurants and families. Luckily for us, this place is less than 5 minutes from us so we will be back soon!

My son has autism and he wants to try his first job at a sandwich shop (I'll hold back the name lol) and I'm a little skeptical. Good for you for standing behind family. My memory is horrible but I will be visiting friends I'm TN someday soon and I'll be sure to come in to eat...I'd be honored!!!! read more

When I first went vegetarian, this place went way up my personal list. It was impossible to get vegetarian food on the go in Chattanooga, unless I wanted to eat a burger king veggie burger on the daily (needless to say, I don't). Ankar's is awesome-they make some killer falafels that fills that fast food niche. They also put some delicious special sauce on it. If you're an onion ring fan, try them here. Perrrrfect. read more

Great for when you're down for a greasy meal served in disposable receptacles. The falafel is some of the best I've had in the states. Although they put pickles on it - which I thought would be strange - but I think the pickles are what really tie it together! I just wish the pita they put it on wasn't so chewy. read more

We stumbled upon this restaurant downtown and I am amazed! I ordered the Greek Salad with grilled chicken and it was amazing! The ingredients were all fresh with a great flavor. Grilled chicken was great quality. Not to mention the salad dressing definitely tasted homemade! Can't get better than that. Great prices and friendly service! Definitely recommend if you are in town! read more

I must say this place doesn't look appealing from the outside at first glance. What led me here were my fellow Yelpers. As a vegetarian I ordered the Falafel and boy was I thrown back. The flavor of the falafel is there along with the pita and sauce it comes with. The place itself isn't the nicest, seems to have been a bar/diner half gone but half still there. The staff is friendly just like you would find at a mom and pop diner. Don't expect this to be a fancy sit down place. They have a huge sitting area towards the back that kind of doesn't fit the front part of the place (maybe and old billiard room) but please come right in. Overall for the price and location, Ankar's offers a quick and ready to eat lunch option. read more

I ordered a sandwich online to be picked up the next day. I arrived and parked in the designated spot and tried to call but the phone just kept ringing and no answer. Finally I went inside and they were using the phone to take an incoming order. I handed the girl at the counter a copy of the e-mail I received confirming my order time and date and she looked at like she had never seen one before and she said well this doesn't even say what you ordered so I had to go out to my car again and get the the copy which showed what I had ordered. By now is was 10 min past when the sandwich was supposed to be ready and they were scrambling to get it ready. Did it never occur to them to look out the window and see a car parked in the pick up spots? You have to indicate the color and shape of your car when ordering and I shouldn't have to bring in the copy of both what was ordered and the later e-mail I received confirming the time I was to pick it up. Some re-education in pick-up orders seem to be badly needed. read more

Been eating here for 15 years and you always know exactly what you're going to get, even down to Mrs. Ankar sitting by the door on the left when you walk in. Great food, very affordable and fast service. While Chattanooga is changing so much, it's good to know places like this are still around and doing well. read more

Steak in a sack for $5+ change may be one of the best sandwich deals in the country! Lean meat, grilled onions and fresh pita. Onion rings are outstanding. Always many locals dining. read more

Before I decided to write this review, I read several other reviews, they were all good or exceptional reviews. I would normally write the same, but over the last year my opinion has changed. The food is still excellent, but they have decreased in quantity. We just ordered three grilled chicken salads. Ankars has recently decrease the salad amount and the amount of chicken they include. We have had the same issues with gyros, steak in a sub, etc. The food is still good, but the prices have gone up and the quantity is less. We actually got a kiddie size French fry today instead of a regular size order. We are going to look for another place to eat, we may return t in a few months. read more

Their cheesesteak subs are the Best hands down!!!!! I have tried so many of them, and nothing cant even come close to it! once you try it! you'll be back!! If your vegeterian- oh they got some yummy felafels in pita bread, which they make them selves. Onion rings- i dont even like onions but these are sooo good! also hand made everyday! If your a lover of chicken- try their grill chicken subs! read more

I have been coming to this place for so many years and its the one restaurant in Chattanooga that I visit every time I am in town, without fail! I have loved this place for so many years and the food is consistent and always good. One thing I love is that the people who work there are the same ones I have seen since I started coming here so long ago. One of the few honest shops I've seen outside of Philly. No trillion dollars of atmosphere - just very good food that will fill you up. Steak in a sac is a winner, so is the Cuban (get it as a rider even though it's not shown on the menu), onion rings, and everything else I've had there. Get the baklava to close out your trip. If you're not that adventurous, the classic brownies are AMAZING! read more

I've never been a fan of having someone put mayonnaise on my steak so I always ask them to leave it off and usually they do. They seem to be big fans of mayo because it comes standard on every sandwich they make so make sure you tell them if you want it left off. read more

A rock solid Chattanooga favorite for years! These folks offer a menu loaded with more than the usual deli selections. Probably most famous for steak-in-sack with fires or onion rings. Portions are good size and they work hard to serve their food up hot and fresh. It's usually busy, but the wait on your food normally isn't that long. Lots of room. Family owned and operated. read more

I will not complain about the food, it was good! But I will complain about the people who work there who have NO heart! I was having lunch with my family when an unfortunate down on his luck homeless guy entered and sat down at a booth. It was already 95 degrees outside with the heat index higher! He was carrying a large cup of water. He was emptying his pockets of change and about 3 dollar bills when we noticed and my nephew got up and asked if the gentleman was hungry. He said yes and we bought him two steak in a sacks. In a matter of minutes of him entering the store, the police were there and it was OBVIOUS that it was the people behind the counter, that gave the "glance" of "there he is" to the cop without pointing him out completely. THANK GOODNESS there was another good hearted human being who INFORMED the staff as well as the police officer that he had food coming to him and he was legally there to eat. (He had seen and heard my nephew making the order). The policeman was very kind to the guy after hearing that, the owners had no clue because they didn't hear what he said to him, but we did! Cudos to the officer for treating this homeless guy with dignity......Do you THINK people want to be in that position. When my nephew gave him his Steak in the Sacks, he asked if he would like us to wrap one up for him to take with him for dinner, the fella said, "No! I am so hungry"! Give people a break once in awhile...it COULD be you one day! You don't know the journey a person takes! Food was great! Hospitality was heartless and sucked! This is the reason for a lower score! read more

I wish I could drive from CA to TN for one of these Hoagies too! They go by reputation alone! Ankar's you are known of and loved all the way over here in the OC, and when I get the chance to visit your area I will absolutely be stopping in! I have grown up going to this restaurant and it is always wonderful. The family is terrific and the food is always delicious. I grew up a strict vegetarian so it was hard to find good places, and Ankar's always had something... of course, as an adult, I then discovered their wonderful cheeseburgers and turkey riders too! read more

The best onion rings ever. I drive to Chattanooga from Marietta just to eat them. I would make the drive just for the onion rings and their Steak in Sub with Swiss is just icing on the cake. read more

We used to live in Chattanooga and started going there about 30 years ago. We moved to Nashville and still stop by Ankars on our way to Atlanta to see grandkids. I remember our 30 year old daughter sitting in a highchair at Ankar's! The special hoagie, steak in a sack and reuben are all top of our ordering list! Don't forget the homemade onion rings! One order will serve 2 people!! Oh, and the lime supreme is our drink of choice! Ankar's is worth your stop!! read more

I have eaten here since I was a kid living in Chattanooga. This is now on my MUST DO list every time I'm back for a visit. They have the best sandwiches, fries, and onion rings. I compare every sandwich I eat to Ankar's and they never come close to measuring up. If you live in Chattanooga this is a must. If you're traveling down I-75 through Chattanogga it's worth a detour. read more

Best place in Chattanooga to have a Gyro. This location is by far the best also. Nice people and consistently good food. Don't know why but after trying all the others over the years it's the one I love the Best. Maybe it's the original location b/c I've been going here since the late '70's...have to check it out.
