We've been wanting to try this place for a while. Especially due to the great reviews. We were in the area recently so we gave it a try. For the record, it's obviously very popular with locals as it was pretty full on a Tuesday at lunch. We found a table and decided to eat there instead of taking it to go. I asked the girl at the counter what their most popular sandwiches were, and she told us they were the falafel and the pita.... Which threw us for a loop because we'd come to try the hoagies. We ordered two traditional hoagies and were underwhelmed. They were not very flavorful at all. The bread was pretty good; we both really enjoyed that... soft and tasty. However, the meat had very little flavor at all, as if it had not been seasoned or marinated. We tried salt, pepper, and some of the hot sauce on the table to improve the taste, but it just wasn't there. This place is just not for us. read more

it was horrible. the worst food I have ever had from there. the onion rings were cold and hard. the bread on my sub was hard and the steak i could not even tear with my teeth had to get a knife and fork. No sauce on the gyr, so very dry!!! For what you pay you are better off going to Gondilier's up the street. we ate there the next day and it was so much better. plus the workers did not look at us like an inconvenience. read more

3.5 stars Ordered the corned beef sub with onions rings. Corned beef sub was really mediocre, very bland meat, shredded lettuce. I'm always on the lookout for good corned beef and pastrami, but this isn't it. I couldn't recommend that sandwich to a friend. The onion rings were pretty good, more of a thick batter style and thick cut onions so just depends on what you like. Seems like they're a little overrated. The service, order process, seating area are all excellent. I plan to go back and get the steak which seems to drive most reviews here, but based on this first experience, I'm not blown away yet. read more

Giving 3 stars because consistency just isn't there. Prices are great for the portion you're getting, but the last three times we've been the steak in a sack (what they're known for) has been entirely too greasy to eat. You unwrap the pita and it just falls apart from the grease. Onions and mushrooms are great sides to go with any sandwich. The place is kept clean with staff always around wiping off tables and clearing trays. read more

I would advice new customers to avoid this restaurant. We ordered 3 hoagies, all of which we ended up discarding. All of our sandwiches had poor ingredients, the bread was soggy and each Hoagie defaulted to Kraft American Cheese versus a real cheese. Even my 11 year old, who ordered a simple ham and cheese Hoagie, refused to eat it because of the taste. In addition, this location does not offer any gluten free options (listed as available on their website). When we ordered a side salad and a lettuce wrapped burger for my kid (Which I was charged extra for a side salad), what we received was a burger on a bed of lettuce. When I questioned where the $3.00 side salad was, they said that was the lettuce under the burger. I would recommend Jersey Mikes or any other chain Hoagie House over this restaurant 100%. read more

We went to the Brainerd Road location, which is pretty easy to find even in a lot of traffic. They have a decent amount of parking, but the lot was full when we arrived. We drove around the side of the building and were able to park by the rear entrance door. There is easy handicapped access from the main lot, but it would be difficult if you need to park around the rear. Entering from the rear door, you'll need to walk through the dining area to order from the start of the line by the main door. They have a box with menus there, and the menu is also on the wall behind the counter. Specials are written on a small chalkboard by the front of the counter. Ordering was easy, and it took maybe 15 minutes to prepare. In addition to the dining area near the counter, there is another section through a doorway to the side. Seating is probably more than 50, and it was almost full when we were there. They also seemed to do a large take out business. We ordered take out, and everything was stapled into brown paper bags, which were then placed in a cardboard box. It was very secure for the ride home. Happily, nothing soaked through the bags, indicating it was both well packaged and not greasy. The Reuben sub uses good quality corned beef. It was pretty good, but could have used thousand island sauce. The club rider had really nice flavor and everything tasted fresh. It was a bit dry overall and would have benefited from a little more mayonnaise. The polish sausage special was nicely done with an abundance of grilled peppers and onions. The sausage was flavorful. The chicken fingers were also prepared well, with light breading. The meat was moist. The gyro plate provides a good portion of gyro meat with grilled onions and added seasoning along with a good portion of fries and a Greek salad. The meat was a bit dry but very well seasoned. The grilled onions were done perfectly as were the fries. The fries are crinkle cut and meaty. The salad seemed fresh and the Greek dressing added good flavor. The onion rings are a must order. They are home made and offer a good sized portion. The breading is light but sticks to the onion, and everything was cooked perfectly. The falafel had really good flavor and is well prepared. The consistency is a bit dry, but it does not crumble. The outside was a dark brown but was not burnt. That's just the way it comes. We also ordered the pecan queen, which is a pecan baklava. We asked which bag it was in as we planned to eat it before heading home. It had not been packaged, so it was good we asked or it would have been forgotten. Oh, it was excellent. Ankar's does a good job on their sandwiches and has a wide variety of choices. You can certainly find something you'll like. read more

I can't believe I haven't given Ankar's a review yet!! I have grown up going to both hwy 58. and Brainerd locations. My go to sandwich had always been "Steak in a sack" with onion rings. Always wonderful!! I work in the Brainerd area and have been trying other things. Their shawarma chicken pita is amazing. it's flavored with Mediterranean spices including sumac It's so good!!! iI normally get a side greek salad. but onion rings are always a good choice. They also have such a large variety of food. They are family owned and very nice! of course they have been around for over 40 years. so they have to be doing slot of things right. Small, hole in the wall that sits off the road. If we didn't drive by it a couple of times a week, we probably would've never known about it. After being picked up from the airport around lunch time, we thought it would be a good time to try it out. Driving up to it, we realized quickly it was a hopping lunch spot. There were barely any parking spots remaining but we found one in the corner. Walking in, you could immediately tell it was a family owned and run establishment. Grandma was sitting at the table on the left just watching the lunch crowd. Her daughter was running around and the kids were working behind the register and in the kitchen. You stand in the que line and order at the counter. They give you a number and you wait for your food. We got ours to go. Pretty much all sandwiches/subs come either on a hoagie or pita which is a nice change up. The salads were large and everything looked amazing. I couldn't help but look around the room to check out other's food while waiting. Very fair prices and delicious food. It's always nice to support local restaurants and families. Luckily for us, this place is less than 5 minutes from us so we will be back soon! read more

The 2 stars are for the awesome customer service and the friendly employees who were polite and kind. But I write reviews on my opinion. And this food is very greasy. My mom is Greek, so I have a lot of experience with traditional Greek food and this Gyro was not good. Arby's is better. And that's not saying much. I've never had a Gyro that was greasy, never. And the flavor wasn't that good either. There was no Tatsuki sauce; if it was tzatziki sauce, it did not taste like it . The breading on the onion rings were dry and not very flavorful. The fries were decent. The fried mushrooms were actually pretty good and not too greasy. My husband got a Rubin on rye and he was not happy with it. The flavor was off and not a traditional Rubin with Russian dressing. They put spicy mustard and provolone cheese on it. Odd. The Greek salad was good; it was Americanized but still good. Needless to say $41 and a $4 tip for this food was disappointing. I wish they'd give us a refund. We can't afford to be throwing money away like that. read more

The best eastern-style (in-pita versus Greek on-pita) gyros I've ever had anywhere. The crinkle-style fries are still great (I remember when Mr. Ankar was still alive and they were cooked crisper, however). And the local paper proclaimed them as "Lord of the Rings" for their fantastic and huge onion rings. I've been a patron for over 20 of its 30 years, and now that I've moved out of state, it's definitely at the top of my list each time I come back to town. While I rarely deviate from these menu items, my friends also love their steak-in-a-sack, camel riders, Greek salad, humus, hot dogs, and mini-corn dogs. read more

Ordered two turkey sliders with cheddar & a small order of fries I was charged almost $20 dollars when it Should have been around $15. I finally got my order and realized it was wrong I asked for cheddar cheese and some how they got feta cheese which is an extra dollar charge which they fixed it but still charged me for the feta. Well it's ankar's it's a staple in Chattanooga. You walk in, and the family (owners) are at the table right by the door. The staff isn't all that polite but the food is always good. You always know what you're getting because they're consistent. They have fresh pita. The onion rings to me are the best in Chattanooga. I think it's a pretty good restaurant if you have multiple people that have multiple food requests. They offer plenty of vegetarian options and plenty of meat options. A few healthy things too. It's nothing fancy jeans and t-shirt kind of place. It isn't expensive at all. Erin likes their veggie burger and I love their falafel and gyro. read more
