Sad to post this review because I've been a customer of Amphora's since 1998. We ordered the Tex-Mex Spring Rolls, an Eggs Benedict, and a Philly Cheesesteak Sub. The Tex-Mex rolls were well-fried on one side and almost raw on the other. Then the let down of the night, the Philly Cheesesteak sub. It came out with a super cold white bread, then barely had any meat in it, and the super soggy french fries. We told our server about the fries and they gave us a fresh new plate of super soggy french fries. So disappointed. I've eaten here for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late dinner back when it was open for 24 hours. Honestly, this is the first time I'm disappointed with my orders here. read more

Service seems to not be consistent here from my own personal experience and reading other yelp reviews. I'm actually pretty disappointed regarding that because the first time I came here, the food was amazing and our server was great. I came to take a friend here for breakfast and I'm actually sort of embarrassed I did. Her french toast was burnt. I had the breakfast biscuit again and it was overcooked (the biscuit was extremely hard to bite/chew). Homefries were only ok this time...had a bit of burnt pieces to it as well. Service was also mediocre this time (our server barely checked up on us). I don't know how they can serve food that inconsistent, but it definitely made me more wary to come here. It's a shame because I feel like they do have a good menu (even if it's lengthy) and potentially great dishes, if only they could get their stuff together regarding the consistency of their food. read more

Enjoyed a nice Sunday Lunch/Brunch with friends. Needless to say a diner on Sunday after church time is quite popular. They do not take reservations, so there will be a wait but i was impressed how quickly they got folks seated. The menu is quite extensive with many options and many beverage choices. We sampled the burger, cinnamon french toast with sausage, the biscuit w/sausage gravy and the waffle w/ eggs & bacon. Good size portions (to go boxes are available). The service was quick and efficient. They have quite a bakery that has all the delights you could want from pie, cakes and cookies. They have a pie and cake of the month special (which sells out daily). It's kinda of tucked back off Elden Street and the parking can be an adventure on a busy day. I'm sorry to say that the food was simply bad. My friends and I were excited to go to a diner after an event. We had a party of 5. Our fries, onion rings, & potatoes were not fully cooked. The manager said they had a problem with their fryer, yet served us uncooked food anyway. My burger was so bad--flavorless and poorly cooked--that I had to send it back. My friends ate their omelets because they were so hungry, but all said they were dry and flavorless. The manager gave us some cheesecake gratis as a kind of consolation, though it really wasn't good either. Very processed & artificial tasting. The servers were very pleasant, though not attentive. Amphora is a reliable and predictable restaurant. They have excellent Greek offerings, and offer and amazing assortment of breakfast options. The service is always attentive and the coffee is refilled without delay. My one criticism of Amphora is their menu. It is too big and too overwhelming. When I see a menu of this size, I am usually concerned about the restaurants ability to focus on excellent delivery of each item. Honestly, I stick to the tried and true at Amphora. Moussaka, gyro platters and Greek salad are always a hit. For breakfast, you wont find better pancakes in Herndon and the Mexican scramble is a family favorite. The Amphora in Vienna was always one of our favorite late night stops, and the Amphora Diner in Herndon is an excellent addition to the family. They are still the local favorite for baked goods and you really can't go wrong stopping here for a solid meal. read more

My family and I attempted several times to dine here only to be treated horribly and ignored. We watched several white families arrive after us who were waited on. We still were waiting to place our drink orders. The waiter finally arrived, he was the same person who seated us.. He slammed two water glasses down, then looked at us and said "oh, I didn't realize there we're three people." We left. Another time we waited for over an hour for our food. Went to the Herndon location. My breakfast was good but pricey (hubby's corned beef hash tasted like it had tomato sauce in it - not good). I got a brownie to go, took a bite on the way home and it almost broke my tooth it was so stale! Got home and nuked for a few seconds - same! That's VERY disappointing. When you have your mouth ready for a yummy sweet treat and it's the most gross thing ever. Don't get their desserts unless you eat it there so you can turn it back if it's bad. Disclaimer: I had dinner here, not breakfast. I fully realize most diners excel at breakfast more so than dinner. The food was not all that good. Came out kind of cold and greasy. My chick and I each got a sandwich, but honestly they were so unmemorable that two weeks later I can't tell you what we got. I think I got a Cuban. I do remember she got some bad fries, and I had some stale chips on the side. The food was not cheap, and service was scarce. I love diners and their implied simple, cheap, and tasty fare. You get a lot of food for what you pay. This whole was $28 I believe. Great customer service. Our server was very nice and friendly. It is nice for weekend breakfast and if you're hungry in the middle of night I believe they are open 24/7. I am not sure with the pandemic right now. Stopped here on a rainy morning drive home from the airport. Quick and friendly service. We had meat lovers omelette and breakfast club sandwich. Both were excellent and my pet peeve of breakfast dining did not materialize here. The toast was LOADED with butter ! (I hate the places that put a small dab of butter in the center of the toast and 90% of the slice is dry). Amphora Diner will always hold a place in my heart. Used to be a usual spot when I lived in Nova. I remember having the French Toast Deluxe for the first time. It's still my go-to here and still fantastic. Their French toast is so great because of their homemade brioche toast baked at their own bakery and their signature cinnamon egg batter. They've perfected it! The deluxe option gives you plenty of food, with a choice of Virginia ham, bacon, or sausage, and two eggs any style. I enjoy the Lavazza coffee they serve. Service has always been friendly and attentive. Evelyn was super during our last visit. Thank you! Now that I no longer live in the area, it's become a tradition to go to Amphora straight from the airport and delight in wonderful breakfast food and warm hospitality. I've visited this diner about six times. They have a huge parking lot with plenty of places to park the menu been reduced because of COVID-19. On this visit I ordered the seared salmon with spinach and steamed vegetables. The manager described the spinach in a way that was not accurate I was very disappointed when it came out buried in this white sauce which made it unbearable. I only had one small bite and threw the rest out. The fresh vegetables and salmon were actually very good. I ordered several cookies from the desert bar in the front reception area. I really like their desserts there are very good servings are big. The booth seating is very uncomfortable because the bench seats are so low and the table tops are so high . The restaurant is very clean and neat. There is the television located over the bar it is an annoying annoying volume level on some frivolous cartoon station making my meal even worse. I was super hungry and of course being that it's 2 AM on a Thursday night, everything was closed except for Amphora Diner, which is open 24-hours and thank goodness for that!! I showed up and asked for a table for one and was seated right away. My waiter Eugeniu came by to greet me and asked if I wanted anything to drink. Being that I'm at a diner I automatically ask for a vanilla shake. I don't know why I always associate diners with shakes. He came back a few minutes later with my shake and I took a sip from it, only to find that it was super watered down and watery. Like it had been sitting out for a while so I told him about it and he went to ask them to make me a new one. The second one was delivered personally by the chef, I believe. And it was definitely better and I actually finished it after my meal. I ordered the pastichio with a side of steamed mixed veggies. It also came with a house salad, but I asked to upgrade it to a Greek salad for $0.99 more. For a person who detests onions and tomatoes, a Greek salad is definitely not the way to go. I sat there picking through the whole thing only to be left with a few cucumber slices, a few olives, some romaine lettuce and a load of ricotta cheese. The dressing was good even though there wasn't much left to eat of the salad. Smart girl!! Lol The pastichio is somewhat similar to a lasagna with ground beef, but it tastes more buttery and less cheesy. I love cheese and butter so for me that was the perfect choice. I couldn't finish it because it was so rich and filling. Although I did finish all of my steamed veggies, which consisted of asparagus, zucchinis, squash, bell peppers and carrots! Got my veggie quota for the day! I needed it too after that vanilla shake. Lol When Eugeniu brought me the bill, he told me the vanilla shake was on the house. How sweet of him!! This is probably one of the few places open 24h in the area, as it's pretty slim pickings for 24h restaurants around here. Like any diner, they offer a large variety of food. Whether it's done well, well that can vary on opinion. And, if you hail from the New Jersey/New York area that gave birth to diner culture, well, you need to understand that anything labeled as a "diner" outside of that area, it's just a 24h joint that offers a large variety of foods at all times. If you compare it to those back home, you'll be sorely disappointed. Take it from this fellow NYer, if you change that mindset, then you'll be pleasantly surprised that there's a 24h joint in the sleepy suburbs. Now, depending on what time you come here, there can be very rambunctious, rowdy, and unctuous crowd of customers here that can make the experience a bit unpleasant. Most are here late night/early morning after partying and whatnot. But, the staff tries their best. Ours was pleasant, but a bit forgetful. I tried the chicken fried steak. First off, it's not chicken fried. Rather, it's breaded, so it doesn't have that same appeal or chicken fried crispness that you're looking for. The gravy was okay, but I've definitely had better. The eggs, I ordered mine over-easy, and they were just spot on! Cooked to perfection. Friends tried the pancakes and cheese omelet. Fresh fruit was good. The pancake was good, but definitely had more of a cake consistency, along with the vanilla flavoring. There was some cleanliness issues that was a bit of a turn off, but was easily rectified during our visit. My one critique is that the meal wasn't necessarily teenager friendly. I love Amphora. It's one of the few all-inclusive breakfast/lunch/dinner diners that's open 24 hours. Sure, you can go to a big chain like IHOP or Denny's, but you can't get that home-made southern comfort type feeling unless you go to a place like Amphora. Most days, my friends and I will go to the Vienna location on our way home from a night on the town. But because I live in Herndon, I do go to the Amphora diner every so often. I recently re-visited the diner after having not eaten there in about a year, and it was every bit as good as it was before. One of my favorite things about the restaurant is the "Orange Cow". It's basically a root beer float, but with orange soda instead of root beer. I also love all the variations of eggs benedict on the menu and also all the variations of grilled cheese sandwiches. Yes, Amphora isn't the cleanest or fastest or friendliest diner out there, but it's easily one of the tastiest. read more

I hadn't been here in quite some time and was all prepared to give it 2 stars. However, based on tonight's meals, I feel that it does deserve an extra star. First of all, we noticed the new menu format (well...new to us anyway!). It's a lot easier to spot the specials. The old menues had a clip-on piece of paper that listed the specials. That wasn't a good system since many times you would get a menu minus the specials. Now, the first page of the menu has the specials listed in what appears to be a clear pocket, so it's easy to change it from day to day. I've always thought that Amphora's strong suit was breakfast. Lunch and dinner were always *meh*---pretty forgettable. The only exception is the Sunday Soup of the Day (at least I think it's still around) Egg Lemon Rice Soup (aka "avgolemono")---Amphora always did a good job with this. Tonight, I got an omelet with cheddar cheese, bacon and tomatoes. It came with home fries and toast. The omelet was made as I requested. Normally, saying that is unremarkable but at Amphora, the servers don't write down orders so screw-ups sometimes happen. The home fries were well prepared---flavorful and not dried out. My husband got the BLT. The bacon portion was generous, as was the lettuce. The tomatoes were poor quality, kind of mealy. That may be in part because cheap winter tomatoes aren't generally the best quality. My Dad ordered one of the daily specials, Shepard's Pie. It said it was spicy but he didn't think so. The portion size was huge (he couldn't finish it) and it came with green beans that were suprisingly good. They were cooked tender-crisp. The special menu also includes a cup of the soup of the day which was tomato Provencal soup. It had rice in it and was spicy. Also, a salad came with the meal. That was surprisingly attractively presented with good quality cherry tomatoes. Overall, service was good. Our waiter was very friendly and competent. I do think the place could use a remodeling as the booth we sat in had saggy and torn cushions. After a not so great experience with their bakery goods, I have been reluctant to try any again. One time we saw a cake that looked good and took a piece home only to find out it was dried out, stale and tasteless. Things might be better now but I'm not too willing to try that again! Bottom line --- if you order off the breakfast menu, you won't be disappointed. However, if you order off the lunch/dinner menu it's a real crapshoot. read more

Came here on a busy Saturday morning. We knew it was going to be crowded but we didn't expect to have to leave before we were even served drinks. After we were seated, it seemed like there were some issues with our server and the woman who sat us. The woman who served us asked what we wanted to drink (we were not given menus when we walked in) and we asked for menus. The waiter did not acknowledge that we asked and she brought us water with no menus. We did not see her at all after that at our table. We asked a woman in green for menus and she acted like she didn't understand us. Then we asked another waiter who finally gave us menus. Our server was going to tables all over the restaurant and even the bar but she never came back to us. We sat for a good thirty minutes before leaving. As we walked out, I saw a woman who I assumed was a manager, and told her our server never actually served us and she said "oh, I'm sorry about that..." and just stared at us. A solid 3. A co-worker of mine wanted to give this place a shot, so we packed up and left for lunch. It has a real diner look from the outside, but the inside is slightly upscale. It has the usual, ultra ginormeous menu that most diners have, and of course the dessert display. I ordered the gyro, after the waiter recommended it, my fiance the meatloaf sandwich and my co-worker got the chicken fajita tortillas. My gyro - was well, huge. Unfortunately, the meat was a little salty and dry. The rest of the meal including fries were good though. Fiance's Meatloaf - She did not like the fact that it had small bones and other hard things in it. Taste was ok. Co-worker's tortillas - He enjoyed em and finished the entire plate. Food was excellent. Waitress was so miffed at our table. No smiles. Bad attitude. Just angry. Refused to visit our table. We desperately needed water refills. I finally got a lady bussing tables to refill our water. It appeared she would rather refill it than get our waitress!! Neither the waitress nor the manager knew how to do a Groupon either and made it so complex. I will NOT ever go back here. The food was definitely good though. This place is so hit or miss. My first time here was pretty good: we were part of a big group for breakfast, but the server was attentive and the food was pretty good and affordable. My second time here was for a business lunch. The server was not as attentive, and the food was kinda bland. I got a shrimp pasta dish, and i feel like it could easily have been from a Bertolli's frozen dinner bag. Actually, Bertolli's is better. At least it comes with actual pasta! There were mushrooms on my dish (which I hate), even though it didn't say in the description that there were mushrooms. Today is my third time here and I'm really disappointed. Our server, Mary, didn't check on us once after she gave us our food. She seemed to spend a lot of her time just talking to her friends. Our drinks were empty for over half of our dining experience. My biscuits were really hard (wasn't like that my first time), and the bacon was over cooked and had a weird, "old" taste to it. I also originally ordered two breakfast meals (I was really hungry!): Biscuits with gravy (comes with home fries) and a two eggs with bacon meal (comes with home fries and toast). She suggested that I modify my meal to just get biscuits with gravy and then just add on eggs and bacon. Not too big a deal, but I found it unnecessary. She was kinda pushy about getting me to change my order to a smaller one. Was she trying to tell me I was fat and didn't need the carbs?? I also noticed that there is a "meals tax tax" (not just meals tax. Meals tax tax) added on to your bill. It's not much, only $0.65 on a subtotal of $25.84. But I'm still wondering what it is and why they charge us for it? There is a separate VA tax. Did they just separate something that is usually grouped together (in terms of tax at Virginia dining establishments)? I never thought I would dislike bacon, or that there was a wrong way to cook bacon or make it taste bad, but today's bacon was just gross. There are also some really obnoxiously loud groups here sometimes--families with screaming kids and the like. But then sometimes, it's nice and quiet and actually kinda empty. Wanting some breakfast after an overnight flight into Dulles, we decided to try out the Amphora Diner to jump-start our day. Unfortunately, we were left a bit wanting from our early morning visit. We both ordered western omelets, which were just okay and nothing particularly special. While the omelets were piping hot, the potatoes were lukewarm at best - somewhat surprising since there were only two other people in the diner at the time, meaning that the kitchen had more than enough time to make sure the entire breakfast was hot. Even the Lavazza coffee wasn't particularly hot - and, if a diner can't serve hot coffee, well, there's not much else to say. The high point? Our wonderful server who brightened up our day after a long flight. She was great - but the breakfast quite simply wasn't, so I'd give this place a miss. read more
