Went here for midday lunch and was pleasantly surprised! Despite being a bit disappointed in the brunch menu having limited lunch options, we opted for the brunch nachos to start. They were HUGE and generously topped with lots of goodies! We planned on ordering entrees after but were too full for anything else! This was my second visit to this location. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by staff members. They let me check out the place before being seated. The bar area is self-seating.I chose to sit in the bar area...the only remaining big table with high chairs/table...it was packed! The happy hour is pretty awesome here. They have daily happy hour from 4-6 pm, which is pretty awesome, starting early and ending late. There is also a power hour from 3-6, where everything on the happy hour menu is $5, which is a little early!! The menu includes regular bar food and a variety of drinks (as shown in the picture). We ordered the following: -Let that "man"go - in general it's an iced drink, so I'd avoid. -Spicy pina marg - another iced drink. It was ok. -I'm Ron Burgundy (2x)- this had a nice strong coffee flavor, doesn't come with ice; I would highly recommend it...they made it so good!!! -Maker's mini nachos - There proportion of chips to toppings was off there wasn't enough toppings and too many chips, but there was a lot of cheese. -Calamari was a good portion, and tasty -Chicken tenders - they were delicious and moist There are so many items to choose from on the power hour/happy hour menu. Avoid at all cost on Valentines Day. Service was incredibly slow and disorganized. Well over 2 hours to get our food/dessert and check. One of the most frustrating parts was the hostess impatiently YELLING names at the front of the restaurant to call tables. Incredibly unprofessional. It was literally every 15-30 seconds she would scream out a name. Way to kill the vibe. As soon as I stepped into Makers Union, I found the place cozy with an inviting atmosphere. The high-back booths and plush chairs in shades of blue and yellow make the space feel warm and comfortable. The menu offers solid, flavorful dishes, and the food itself was good overall. However, the biggest drawback was the temperature -- everything arrived at the table only slightly warm. From the calamari to the entrées, none of the dishes were served hot, which took away from the overall experience. With better attention to serving temperature, this could be a much stronger dining spot. The happy hour menu offered a good variety of items and really helped round out our meal. The 4 oz burger was smaller than expected, but flavorful. We also ordered the French fry tower, which was more than enough to share between two or more people. However, the small sauce dishes ran out quickly and I had to ask for more. The fries would have been much more enjoyable if they had been served hot. From the happy hour menu, we also tried the fish tacos, which featured lightly battered cod and were enjoyable. The spinach and artichoke dip was fine but the portion was on the smaller side. The standout dish of the meal was the braised short ribs, which were excellently prepared and very flavorful, though the carrots could have been cooked a bit softer. Service was fine overall. Our server checked in on us at least once during the meal and was polite and attentive at the start. Food Ordered: * worth trying - [Maryland Crab Cake Benedict*]: My husband substituted the breakfast potatoes for french fries and that was probably the best substitution; their french fries are double fried and perfectly seasoned and came with jalapeno tartar. There was a small piece of shell in the crab cake. - [Cornflake-Crusted French Toast*]: I loved the crispiness the cornflakes gave to the French toast, making it one of the most unique french toasts I've ever had. Similar to other reviews, I thought they skimped out the maple-pecan praline syrup, which was drizzled on top. I would recommend ordering an additional side of the syrup or asking for it on the side so you can control the drizzle. - [Poke Bowl with Salmon*]: My friend ordered this and I tried a bite. I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the salmon was. - [Crispy Brussels Sprouts*]: I like the combination of sweet, spicy, and salty flavors along with the additional texture from the roasted peanuts. - [Fried Calamari]: The calamari had good flavor but it was a little fishy. I've never had the whole Moroccan-Style "Impossible" Kebabs meal before but I've had the kebabs themselves at company sponsored events and I would recommend them. I personally eat meat and, while they did have that distinct Impossible meat taste, they had a nice flavor to them. Some might be put off by the vegan meat flavor as I've had some coworkers tell me before. Would I go back?: Yes, if someone suggested going here. I have enjoyed pretty much all the items I've had and I think the Cornflake-Crusted French Toast and Moroccan-Style "Impossible" Kebabs are the most unique items I've ever had but none of the other items, albeit good, really wow'ed me. However, I would be open to trying some of their other items. Our waiter was great and kindly asked a manager to stop by. He did go back and get our orders corrected. My steak was the lunch portion and dinner was supposed to be 8oz. They also gave me more than 3 broccolini the second time. My friend did get some lobster in her pasta as well. We joked with the manager that the cook totally messed up 2 meals for 2 at one table. That's not a good look at all. Service: waiter was great. He came by to check up on us often. He also apologized for the kitchen messing up our orders. The manager was great in listening and correcting the issues. I would also comment that we got our mains when we were still eating our appetizers. So anyway work on timing. I'm a bit torn on this restaurant. They had items that sold out on the menu, timing wasn't great and then the cooks couldn't get the portions nor ingredients correct. Went for dinner on a Saturday night around 730pm and surprisingly we were seated within minutes. The hostesses were super friendly and so was our waitress, she was also very attentive to us. My dad's new favorite restaurant for when he visits DC! We had a reservation for after the Reston tree lighting, and they were able to move up our reservation since it was so cold outside. Food is served quickly and efficiently. Service is friendly. My table liked all of their drinks. Truly the burger is phenomenal and I would get that again. I found my chicken sandwich to be basically but delicious. I also thought the fish and chips were not that great. Food all felt warm, not hot. Happy hour is not dead--and this place proves it! I had a great meal and a wonderful happy hour experience here. I ordered two of the "Lil' B'" mini burgers and a couple rounds of the Painful Punch Sangria. Despite the name, there was nothing painful about that sangria--it was smooth, slightly sweet, and super refreshing, especially on a warm day. The burgers aren't sliders; they're a bit bigger, and two was more than enough for me. The staff were friendly, attentive, and really helped set a welcoming vibe. There's plenty of seating at the bar and in the bar area, plus restaurant and outdoor seating as well. Generally, having been here many times, this would be a 4.5 review. For some reason tonight Makers was off. We came here to celebrate my daughter's 15th bday. I sat at my table for literallya 10 minutes without someone asking if I wanted a drink. I got up and went to the bar and ordered drinks myself for the table. Eventually I flagged down the hostess who took my appetizer order. Eventually the waiter (Sharif) came to my table but he was not much better. Not sure if he was busy taking care of a table of 6 next to me, but I had to get up and go to the bar again to get myself a drink. Eventually, for some reason, a new person (Ashley) came to help us. The hostess was not very welcoming or seemed happy to be at work. Our server was slow and had a rude moment. There were some staff members that were smiling and welcoming. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice. It was well decorated and looked like a nice place to have a nicer meal or spend time with others. It is very loud inside and we had trouble hearing each other. The chairs at our table had food on them. The food portions were large and we liked most of the things that were ordered. Disappointing experience. My food was just bad. Had the chimichurri steak with baked potato. Very rubbery meat, underdone. I stumbled upon Makers Union while searching for a dinner spot with available seating, and I'm so glad I did. The staff greeted my party warmly, and we were seated promptly. Makers Union offers an extensive menu, including a great selection of drinks from the bar. We started with the Nachos as an appetizer (not pictured), and the portion was generous enough to satisfy our group of five. The prices are reasonable across the board for both appetizers and entrées. I ordered the Makers Flatiron Steak with Fries, and I was especially impressed by the broccolini it came with--perfectly seasoned and a great complement to the meal. My friends ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich, Lamb Chop, and Alfredo Pasta, and they all enjoyed their dishes as well! The ingredients were fresh, and the meats were cooked to perfection. The quality of both the food and the service was excellent. There's plenty of seating, whether you prefer indoor, outdoor, or bar seating, making it ideal for larger groups. We came to Makers Union early Sunday afternoon for a brunch. Upon my entry, multiple staff members stopped to ensure that I was assisted, which I greatly appreciated. Shortly after our table was prepared, we were quickly seated. Our waiter was warm, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. Makers Union is definitely becoming my go to spot in Reston Town Center. I recently tried them for dinner and I really enjoyed it. I had been before for brunch and when they were done up for Christmas. Really anytime you visit you will have a great time. For this last visit, I had the painful punch sangria, it tasted like Christmas with the cinnamon and allspice, I would get it again. For an appetizer, we got the spinach and artichoke dip. It was really good, I just wish it had more chips served with it. For the entree I got the chicken piccata. The serving size was huge, so I was able to have some for lunch the next day. The chicken was flavored really well and it had a lot capers, which I love. The service was speedy, we didn't have to wait too long for food. Starting with the positives, the plates were pretty and the chairs were comfy. Unfortunately, the rest is negative: We were seated and it took 20 minutes for someone to come over and say hi. It took another 10 for them to fill our waters. Our coffee and first round of drinks didn't come until 45 minutes after we were seated. The restaurant was not busy with staff standing everywhere... Our iced coffees arrived as hot coffees with the milk already mixed in, which is usually brought on the side. Since it took so long to come, we decided not to say anything. The coffee was $6 a cup, which was ridiculous, especially because it was incredibly mediocre and took 45 minutes to come. The $32 "unlimited" brunch is not unlimited at all. It is extremely complicated for no reasons. Of the hundreds of bottomless brunches in the area, this is the only one I have seen that works this way. Your table (whether you have 1 person or 8) chooses 3 entrees and 3 starters. They bring out a portion they say reflects the size of your table, and that is it. Not refilled aka not unlimited. Everyone has to agree on the exact order and egg cooking style, which was basically impossible for our large group. Some of us split off and did a la carte for this reason. The beach themed decor looked like cheap decorations from Amazon or Oriental Trading and was falling apart. The poached eggs were aggressively over cooked. The yolk was hard and crumbly. The tortilla chips were paper thin, like something you'd get with nachos at a stadium. It was great on a cold day outside which we opted for outdoor seats next to the heaters. The portion size was huge so definitely recommend. I opted for the makers scramble and it was a lot bigger than I expected! It had an array of breakfast potatoes as well as loaded eggs with some many different mixings within it.
