This was a wonderful place to come for a brunch with a big group. We were seated promptly and had a table with plenty of space. The restaurant itself it very bright and lively so it was an enjoyable spot to spend an afternoon. As an appetizer, we shared the monkey bread which was delicious. Do not miss out on that! For my main, I had the smoked salmon lox and I shared the strawberry shortcake pancakes. Both were fantastic! The smoked salmon with the capers was savory and not too fishy, which I don't tend to like. The pancakes came with real strawberries and were very sweet. I probably would not have them as a meal in and of itself, but it was a delightful side. Overall, this was a very easy place to meet up with a big group and the menu had many different options so everyone found something they liked. The initial presentation of the decor and such when you walk in is great. I should have known that at 6:30 pm on a Friday they could sit people without a wait was the first red flag in a serious of many others. It took some time to get actual service, starting with an ask for iced water that took 15 minutes and then just got ice in a cup, red flag number two. This then followed multiple food issues, poorly prepared, cooked, and bused tables. When I brought up undercooked food a manager showed up 4 minutes later and said that the kitchen was under prepared and asked if I wanted anything else. They tried to correct it but brought out the same side again that was again under cooked. It took time to ask for the bill, and anticipated some kinda financial apology for the service and food quality, there wasn't, in fact I saw on the receipt that they were tracking how many times they filled my water glass, so weird. I wouldn't go back here if the meal was free. Beyond the atmosphere the restaurant really has nothing much to offer in comparison to its competitors in the area. I don't know how this place has 4.2 stars. Everything about it was underwhelming or entirely disappointing. To start, the service was slow despite a half full restaurant on a Friday night, half an hour to get drinks. The first food that came out was a batch of buffalo wings that were vaguely squirted with stock buffalo sauce. The waiter had to be hailed to order food. Each dish was less impressive than the next, my Nashville Hot Chicken Bowl consisted of 3 frozen chicken tenders over romaine, a dollop of store bought slaw, and 3 pickles all drizzled with a bit of "spicy" sauce. Everyone else had notably mediocre renditions of the meals they ordered. Adding some flavor to the experience, no dishes were bussed the whole time (despite us pre-busing them) and the meals were $20-40. If I wasn't so hungry from the wait I wouldn't have eaten it and would have left. Oh and the $15 seasonal cocktails are embarrassingly bad and they took another 20 minutes to provide our checks. I genuinely hope that the owner of this restaurant reads this and fires their whole team and replaces the menu immediately. However, I will not ever return to find out if it improves. Stopped at Makers Union in Reston on a rainy Sunday afternoon after taking our dog to the dog park. We sat outside on the patio with Onyx, and our server Kenny was great. When the rain started becoming an issue, he actually moved the umbrellas together to make sure Onyx had a dry spot. Really appreciated that. We started with a Bourbon Club and the Nitro Espresso Martini, then got the buffalo wings and she-crab soup. The wings can be grilled or fried and we went grilled, which was definitely the right call. Good char on them and I'd get them the same way again. The she-crab soup was also really good and perfect for a rainy afternoon. For lunch we had the French dip and the Reuben, and subbed the mac and cheese for one of the sides. Both sandwiches were solid, but the mac and cheese deserves a mention of its own. Definitely worth the substitution. Good food, good drinks, and especially good service from Kenny. First time at Makers Union and it definitely didn't disappoint! Great atmosphere for a date night, group gathering, or family dinner (like we did). We had Mackenzie as our server and immediately connected because she's a foodie like me. At her suggestion, I got the Grilled Chicken Sandwich but swapped the grilled chicken for fried. She had me at bacon. I mean, what doesn't go well with bacon? The chicken was crispy without being greasy and all the flavors just worked. My son had the chicken and waffles. Chicken was perfectly crispy, although the batter was a little sweeter than I prefer. I'm more of a Southern, savory fried chicken person. We asked for hot sauce to add to the maple syrup and Mackenzie upped it by bringing us hot honey instead. YES! Makers Union, add that to the menu. Promise you, it'll be a hit. We dined at Makers Union for Father's Day and it was such a great experience! I originally reserved a table for 7 but had family come in from out of town to surprise my dad and needed to add them, so I called in and Jayla was a great help in updating our reservation. We chose the unlimited brunch and it was A LOT of food!! From breakfast nachos to salmon and lox, there were great choices to choose from. This was my second visit to this location. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by staff members. They let me check out the place before being seated. The bar area is self-seating.I chose to sit in the bar area...the only remaining big table with high chairs/table...it was packed! The happy hour is pretty awesome here. There is also a power hour from 3-6, where everything on the happy hour menu is $5, which is a little early!! The menu includes regular bar food and a variety of drinks (as shown in the picture). As soon as I stepped into Makers Union, I found the place cozy with an inviting atmosphere. The high-back booths and plush chairs in shades of blue and yellow make the space feel warm and comfortable. The menu offers solid, flavorful dishes, and the food itself was good overall. However, the biggest drawback was the temperature -- everything arrived at the table only slightly warm. From the calamari to the entrées, none of the dishes were served hot, which took away from the overall experience. With better attention to serving temperature, this could be a much stronger dining spot. The happy hour menu offered a good variety of items and really helped round out our meal. The 4 oz burger was smaller than expected, but flavorful. We also ordered the French fry tower, which was more than enough to share between two or more people. However, the small sauce dishes ran out quickly and I had to ask for more. The fries would have been much more enjoyable if they had been served hot. From the happy hour menu, we also tried the fish tacos, which featured lightly battered cod and were enjoyable. The spinach and artichoke dip was fine but the portion was on the smaller side. The standout dish of the meal was the braised short ribs, which were excellently prepared and very flavorful, though the carrots could have been cooked a bit softer. Service was fine overall. Our server checked in on us at least once during the meal and was polite and attentive at the start. There was a small piece of shell in the crab cake. - [Cornflake-Crusted French Toast*]: I loved the crispiness the cornflakes gave to the French toast, making it one of the most unique french toasts I've ever had. I would recommend ordering an additional side of the syrup or asking for it on the side so you can control the drizzle. - [Poke Bowl with Salmon*]: My friend ordered this and I tried a bite. I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the salmon was. - [Crispy Brussels Sprouts*]: I like the combination of sweet, spicy, and salty flavors along with the additional texture from the roasted peanuts. - [Fried Calamari]: The calamari had good flavor but it was a little fishy. I've never had the whole Moroccan-Style "Impossible" Kebabs meal before but I've had the kebabs themselves at company sponsored events and I would recommend them. I personally eat meat and, while they did have that distinct Impossible meat taste, they had a nice flavor to them. Some might be put off by the vegan meat flavor as I've had some coworkers tell me before. Would I go back?: Yes, if someone suggested going here. I have enjoyed pretty much all the items I've had and I think the Cornflake-Crusted French Toast and Moroccan-Style "Impossible" Kebabs are the most unique items I've ever had but none of the other items, albeit good, really wow'ed me. However, I would be open to trying some of their other items. Stopped by Makers Union in Reston when I was in town overnight. I sat at the bar which was well stocked with most of my favorite bourbon although I didn't have any in this trip. Instead, I had a spicy Pineapple Margarita. It was phenomenal, one of the best I've ever had. I ordered wings and a side of garlic parm fries. Both were excellent. Happy hour is not dead--and this place proves it! I had a great meal and a wonderful happy hour experience here. I ordered two of the "Lil' B'" mini burgers and a couple rounds of the Painful Punch Sangria. Despite the name, there was nothing painful about that sangria--it was smooth, slightly sweet, and super refreshing, especially on a warm day. The burgers aren't sliders; they're a bit bigger, and two was more than enough for me. The staff were friendly, attentive, and really helped set a welcoming vibe. There's plenty of seating at the bar and in the bar area, plus restaurant and outdoor seating as well. Not only were the sweet potato fries cold and soggy, but there were literally 12 fries in each box.
