SO YUM! Think of a Chipotle-Indian spot - great for a quick bite, whether you're dining solo or with a friend. Staff is quick and informative about what each item is and what their recs are. I really enjoyed my bowls on both visits! I got the standard popular items - White rice, Black Dal, Chicken Tikka (with their sauce), Potatoes, Cucumber Raita, Kachumber, Eggplant Dip are all great toppings, and topped my bowls off with Cilantro Mint drizzle (can't go wrong with any of their drizzles). The bowl looks like a small portion, but it's actually very filling! I've also tried their Mango Lassi beverage and it was DELICIOUS! Nice sweet drink to top off the meal. Convenient and yummy! Before I start the review I just want to show some appreciation to the beautiful display of plants in this cozy Indian food restaurant. They are stunning and honestly bring the meal together; which is super filling and bright with flavour. I chose the turmeric saffron rice, chicken tikka, pickled onions, sweet mango chutney, and a couple more ingredients to complete my meal. We each got a bowl - non-veg over yellow rice for him, veg over mung sprouts for me - samosas and drinks. As a meat eater, I do have a downward bias for vegetarian places but the food at Ambo packs enough of a punch in terms of flavor that I kind of forget that I've gotten food from a vegetarian place. I've gotten their rice bowl a couple of times to go and it was very tasty and delicious. Also, kudos for being environmentally friendly with their use of biodegradable utensils. The space itself is pretty small and casual. I wouldn't go on a date here but would go here for a lunch appointment if I worked in the area. The service is friendly and quick. A Chipotle restaurant concept, but it's Indian food instead. I don't think I can think of any fast casual Indian restaurant, so this spot is really unique in that aspect. The selections as you build your own bowl is rather quite healthy and tasty. Definitely get their mango chutney sauce, which is freakin delicious. Going in unprepared, I felt a bit like the person at Starbucks who requests a "large." With chicken, paneer and falafel being the only protein choices, the real action is in the accompaniments. The service is fast and you can be in and out in no time. you start with a base, add your choice of lentils, protein, veggie, 2 toppings and unlimited sauces drizzled on top. I opted for the basmati rice with yellow dal, chicken tikka masala with dark meat, bhindi (okra), baingan bharta (eggplant chutney) and a hard boiled egg. They even let me choose if I wanted dark meat or white meat! let me tell you, this was SO FILLING and definitely worth it for about $14. The food had a good spice level and it's an extremely unique lunch idea if you're tired of your basic and overpriced nyc salads! Found this new fast casual Indian bowl restaurant that is located near NYU. You can make your own customized bowl or order some of their unique tacos. The customized bowls allow you to have the flexibility to choose your own ingredients! It is a great and affordable option for work lunches. Make your own Indian bowls! Ambo has a ton of options and if you're looking for a quick flavorful meal then Ambo is your best bet. I was looking for something quick and simple and Ambo hit the spot. I ordered a white rice bowl with black/yellow dal and chana, gobi, and chicken tenderloins. The curries and dals are super flavorful and pair well with the white rice. The chicken was a little dry and it could have been flavored better so I'd recommend going with the paneer or falafel option. The gobi manchurian also didn't feel like Manchurian it was more like sautéed/steamed rather than crispy but it was still a good topping. Good option for a quick flavorful lunch! read more

Wow y'all Ambo is the absolute SPOT. Everything here is insanely good and it's still an affordable meal. In the restaurant they give a mix of items neatly arranged in a bowl. The chicken tikka masala is just so good - fresh and high quality chicken, flavorful sauce that's creamy but not too heavy - done just right. The okra and black daal were solid too. The staff has been friendly and the food has been consistent every time I've been. Recently my company catered them for lunch and it was just as exceptional. Strange I came back half a year later and the food portion and taste has changed. Not sure if the chef has changed or I was hallucinating, but even the portion size felt smaller. The price has stayed the same so probably the pricing is due to pandemic which is fair. If you have had Ambo when they opened, one can sense the changes in the food. Just had a chance to check this super yummy place out tonight and in case you can't tell, we really liked it a lot! We had vegetarian- and everything was so delicious and had just the right amount of spice for it to be fun and also not too hot that it's painful if you know what I mean.. I can't remember it all, but we def got our fiber and nutrients in with a variety of dal, paneer, cauliflower, chana masala, potatoes and some rice. I really appreciate that it wasn't all rice and carbs too. It was rellaly clean and had some places to eat but we had it to go. The man who served us was very friendly and we felt very welcome and excited to try everything. He very thoughtfully packed it to not spill and he checked the date on the mango lassi to make sure it was made today ( it was!) and told us they made it in house , which was really nice to hear. It's a bit of a walk for us to get to but definitely worth it and we will def be back for the great flavor, value, healthy choices and really nice people that create the great vibes too!!
