This spot in NY used to feel like a little hidden gem one of those true hole-in-the-wall places you almost didn't want too many people finding out about. The second time we visited, they had expanded into a much bigger location. It's really nice and the upgrade is beautiful, although it did lose a little bit of that quaint charm from before. Went to dinner here with some long-time local Manhattan friends who call this place one of their "top 5" Indian spots in the City. I agree with their assessment! Really delicious. These particular friends are vegetarian, so I happily joined in our all-vegetarian family-style order of most of the veggie curries in non-overlapping permutations, some samosas, and some extra crispy naan (I always order my naan extra crispy and specify that it come out fresh with the meal, not 15mins before the entrées come out - a fairly common timing pet peeve...) Pleasantly surprised by the somewhat reasonable pricing, considering its Midtown address. I think the pricing is smart though - ultimately locals will order delivery and pickup more often and in bigger quantities if they feel like they're getting a decent value. Makes 'em feel smart - people love thinking they are smart. Dunning-Kruger effect. I digress. Just eat here. It's great! read more

Really enjoyed my meal at Bengal Tiger. They had a dinner prefixed meal for an appetizer, entree, and dessert for $30. Relatively really reasonable for the area. The service was friendly and our water cups remained full. I'm really happy to say that when they told me the vindaloo was spicy it actually was. Went here today for lunch - Friday. They had a lunch special which was $20 for an appetizer and an entree with basmati rice. Service was great and quick. It's a small and really nice spot for something casual or a little fancier. It's right next to Central Park so a good stop before walking off lunch. We had samosas which came out piping hot and a really nice mix of a sweet and spicy chutney that was really good together. We had the chicken tikka masala and the Channa with Spinach. The restaurant is a little small inside but very clean and quaint. We also ordered the garlic naan, which was really good and paired perfectly with the meal. They offer a fantastic three-course prix fixe for $30. I started with the chicken pakora, which was incredible. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I thought Bengal Tiger was just okay. I'm a huge fan of lunch specials and was rly excited to try this spot after seeing glowing reviews on Yelp. But alas, left slightly disappointed. Tried the Lamb Vindaloo ($20) and the Paneer Makhani ($18) lunch specials and the lamb samosa as an app. Also got a mango lassi. The paneer was good, but there weren't many chunks of lamb in the Lamb Vindaloo and it was rather tough. Also got the naan which didn't come with the lunch deal, but it was buttery and warm. They have a great pre fixe here that give you an appetizer, a main, and a dessert! Lots of options to choose from for each category. For the app I got the Vegetable Samosa. The filling was smooth, spiced well, and the bread was fried super crispy. Tamarind and mint chutneys were great as well mmmmm I love tamarind chutney so much I licked it clean. For the main I was feeling spicy so I got the Chicken Vindaloo and let me tell you they do not hold back with the spice here! Ordered take-out from Bengal Tiger as it was just too cold to go outside to eat in -- chose it because of its high yelp rating and I was not disappointed. Food came within 30 minutes to my hotel and it was a LOT of food. I ordered two curries and had enough food for three meals. The tandoori chicken was amazingly creamy and was my favorite. The lamb curry was also very good. The samosas were huge and full of flavor and fresh veggies. All in all, it was the best take-out / delivery I've ever had and made my evening. Great midtown spot for a more-than-solid meal! The service is EXCELLENT: I don't think my water glass got less than 1/2 full the whole meal, and our food came out very quickly. Ordered the paneer makhni and chicken green chili, both of which were very good. I liked that both entrees had a good amount of the protein of choice in addition to some cilantro garnish, which added good flavor. Entrees come with rice, but only a small side portion, so I recommend supplementing with more or some naan if you're more than mildly hungry. "Medium" spicy was certainly medium by American, not Indian, standards- I like spice and could have gone up a notch. Pro tip from a friend- order the coconut naan. read more

I was staying at the Marriott, and this restaurant was only a 3-minute walk. It was Friday night around 9pm, so I walked over real quick. The place was friendly, clean, and welcoming. When I opened my order, I was shocked at how much food they gave me--I couldn't even finish it all. Hands down, the best Indian food I've ever had! Everything was so good and such great quality. I had a great meal with friends here last night. We all had the fixed price menu (one appetizer, one main dish, and one dessert) for $30. The problem is that I missed having a vegetable with my meat as a main dish. Luckily a friend who I was with ordered one as her main dish and shared. The vegetable samosa was so so (maybe the other appetizer choices are better), the lamb curry was delicious and enough for two people. Those of us who got it took at least 1/2 home. And the Saag Panir was also delicious, as was the rice dessert. If you want both a veggie and a meat dish for your meal and you are there with others, I recommend having one person order a meat dish and another a veggie dish. We enjoyed our visit to the Bengal Tiger and were happy to find multiple vegetarian options. The food was very good and the service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant is somewhat small, but cozy and large enough to accommodate a fair amount of people. If possible, I would recommend making a reservation. We ordered naan, saag paneer, malai kofta, and channa masala. We also had mango lassis. Of the dishes were ordered, the maiai kofta was my favorite. The servings were generous and we ended up taking a lot of food back to the hotel. Ask about the degree of spiciness if you are taking children or people who prefer milder dishes. Another NYC dinner AND a category my sons had never tried before! The Indian cuisine bar has been set VERY HIGH after this meal. We made a reservation in the late afternoon for a same-day dinner with a friend, and it turns out she lives nearby - this is one of her favorite spots and she's a regular. She helped guide us through ordering, and we proceeded family style so we all got to try several appetizers and entrees, really rounding out the teenagers' first Indian food experience. They loved the spice combinations they were not familiar with and we all ate so well. We had a u-shaped table in the back and the restaurant was cozy but also well lit and we didn't feel like we were in a cave. We could see and smell all the goodness around us. We weren't really there for cocktails, but my friend and I had a glass of sparkling bubbly. We did sit and talk for a long time, but they never made us feel rushed or like there was a timeline for our table. I am hesitant now to get Indian food at home because I don't know if it will match our memories of Bengal Tiger! read more

It came out piping hot like all the dishes. Both were crunchy, flavorful, and the samosa had plenty of filling. For mains we got the chicken tikka masala and chicken vindaloo. The chicken tikka had a nice flavor, I asked to make it 8/10 spice but it wasn't spicy, the chicken was also a bit tough. The chicken vindaloo was spicyyy, but the chicken wasn't over cooked. My friend and I came here on a Tuesday night and it was pretty busy, but they were able to seat us within 10 minutes. The inside is nice and intimate enough for a nice group dinner or date night. We both ordered the prix-fixe menu, I got the vegetable samosa, tikka masala at medium spice, and the gulab jamun for dessert. The samosa was crunchy and flavorful with a lot of filling. The tikka masala was solid and it had a good spice level, just enough to linger. This was the first time I had tried gulab jamun and it was good, a bit too sweet for me but that may be how it's normally is. I am super harsh on Indian Food because I've had SO much of it, and hearing about how popular this place is (2.5k reviews wowza), I had to try their prix fixe menu. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and seated rather quickly. The ambiance of the restaurant is a little tight but very cozy with a warm feeling. We started with the pakora and the lamb samosa for our appetizers and both were super delicious and freshly fried. The pakora was herbacious and filling, n the portion was pretty substantial for an appetizer. It also came with a mint and tamarind sauce that was just the perfect accompaniment. Similar story with the lamb samosa, piping hot and really good gamey lamb flavor which I love that they lean into, accompanied by the same great sauces. As for the curries, we got the chicken tikka masala and the lamb curry and unfortunately they both kind of missed the mark overall. While the curry itself had pretty good flavor, they were both a little too salty (There's salty dishes paired with rice and then there's TOO salty). Not so much so that we couldn't eat them but too much so that we needed to order more rice to "dampen" the saltiness of it. Also, the meat in both of our curries were really dry, and I mean EXCEEDINGLY dry. We didn't get any fatty bits in our meat at all, which was a travesty because the meat REALLY needed it. Overall, I think the main course was kind of a letdown overall which was such a shame because I think the appetizers were pretty much perfect. Lastly, we got gulab jamun and kheer for dessert. I LOVE gulab jamun and it's down very well here, with a good amount of rose water accent in the syrup. I just wish I got more than just a small singular ball haha. The kheer itself isn't really my thing but I know it's done well here for those who like a mildly sweet rice pudding. The service itself was pretty good too, they were attentive and took note to refill our waters routinely (assuming the spice level some people get, I assume they've gotten into the habit). It's just a bit of a shame about the curries. Basically everything else from the appetizers and dessert were pretty spot on, but sadly the main dish needed a lot of improvement.
