    Chaat
    Sylvia T.

Well priced nicer Indian restaurant in LES. Super small inside so get a res but service is good! Portion sizes are on the smaller side too though. Apps: chaat was crunchy and good. I've lowkey never had anything like it. Textures and flavors were spot on. Chipotle chicken was just chicken w Chick-fil-A sauce but lowk the best and gobi Manchurian was decent but nothing crazy. Plates: lemon chicken was fine, shrimp coconut curry was good but just like normal coconut curry which with enough fat can never be bad. The chicken tikka was mid as hell, feel like I could get that anywhere Garlic naan was decent Overall I thought it was decent but nothing special.

Solid, unpretentious Indian Joint in the LES. Walked in around 6:30pm on a Saturday and were able to get in right away with all the tables being nearly empty. What we got : 1 - Bok Choy Chaat : tasted like normal chaat but with a twist 2- Chole Saag : Also pretty good 3 : Zaatar Naan : we took a risk with this one we really liked it. It was very flavorful and paired well with our Indian food. Service was fast and efficient as well.

This is one of my absolute favorite spots in the Lower East Side ! I'm not exaggerating when I say you will not be disappointed! The food at Gazab is next-level. Every dish was packed with bold flavor and creativity. Gazab truly lives up to their name. Here's what we ordered and loved: Kolkata Pani Puri Shrimp Ghee Roast Bhut Jolokia Chicken Tikka Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani Lemon Chicken Bokchoy Chaat Kori Sukka Garlic Naan Alphonso Mango Lassi The service was also phenomenal which made the experience 10x better! If you're looking for somewhere that's fun, flavorful, and guaranteed to impress your friends, this is the place to go!

Went to Gazab, a cute little Indian restaurant in NYC! Tried the Bhoot Jolokia Chicken Tikka -- super flavorful, tender, and juicy, with just the right amount of heat. The Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani had a nice presentation and looked great, but the taste was just alright. The ambience was cozy and authentic, making it a nice spot overall for Indian food in the city.

Absolute Gazab food! Random walk-in with family on a Sat night, thanks to rejections from Dhamaka and Bungalow. And aren't we glad that happened! Best thing about food; you don't have to be a celebrity chef to deliver bold flavors, something that was an absolute hit on their non-vegetarian taste plates. The Kori Sukka ($18) was a hit, and so was the Pani Puri ($13). Gobi Manchurian ($15) could've used a bit more spice, just as the Tandoori Pomfret ($22). Mushroom Panner Biryani ($24) while not spicy, was very tasty, and so was the Chicken Dum Biryani ($26). Rajasthani Lal Maas ($26) was packed with flavor, just as the Dal Bukhara ($20) with it simply rich flavors. You should not miss the Gulab Jamun Creme Brulee ($11). Shout out to Anveer, our server, and specific mention of Chef Vamshi, who manages to challenge the celebrity chefs in the area with traditional classics, presented in an effective manner with plenty of flavor!

I enjoyed the mix of fusion and classic dishes here. Prices were also about average, working out to about $40-$50 per person for a large group. The appetizers were all tasty. Gobi manchurian was crispy with a sweet and tangy sauce. The pani puri was my favorite appetizer - flavorful filling with sweet, sour, and herbaceous water, plus a cute presentation with the light bulb bottles. The bok choy chaat was nice, but pretty standard. For main course, I tried mushroom paneer biryani, dal bukhara, and garlic naan. The biryani was full of warm spices and flavored a bit more subtly than other biryani I had. The dal bukhara was my favorite, with just the right amount of richness, pairing well with garlic naan. The creme brulee was a cool fusion dessert. It's really just a gulab Jamun with creme brulee on top, but the two parts complement each other well.

Overall loved Gazab for casual Indian food - The mango lassi and food was really good and the service is pretty quick. There's not a ton of space for seating but it's perfect for a semi-casual meal. Can't go wrong with their garlic naan and chicken tikka but the appetizers were even better.

The staff was very kind. We ran in from a sudden down pour soaked and they gave us napkins to wipe down haha. It's a casual spot and the food is great. It's very rich in flavor and warm cozy dishes.

This is a small restaurant, so definitely make a reservation! The menu was on a QR code and service was pretty quick on a Thursday night. To start, we got the Kolkata Pani Puri, and the water came in a lightbulb. We also shared the Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani (my fave) and the Kerala Shrimp Moilee. We also got some garlic naan. They only had one dessert, the Gulab Jamun Creme Brûlée, which was delicious.

Not your typical traditional Indian restaurant. The food here is very unique and creative. We started with the Bokchoy Chaat. I'm a big fan of Samosa Chaat and not a fan of adding more vegetables to an item I already like, but I thought the chaat was really good. Somehow, the bokchoy, the pomegranate and the chutney mixed together created an amazing flavor profile. We also had the Chipotle Chicken Tikka. I thought it was good, but not a must-have dish. We shared the Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani. At first, we thought the portion wouldn't be big enough to share, but it was perfect for two. And it tasted excellent. It was a little on the spicy side, but I couldn't stop eating it. For dessert, we ordered both desserts that the restaurant carries; the Gulab Jamun Creme Brulee and the Lychee Firni. Both were amazing!! I would come back to the restaurant just to have dessert again! I never thought that a gulab jamun stuck inside creme brulee would go together, but it totally works! And who would think to put lychee pieces in firni? I loved both and you can't go wrong with either.

I've grown up eating my mom's home cooked Indian meals and I would say this place does a pretty good job. I'm usually really picky with Indian food and thought this place was delicious and very cute! It takes a twist on making it fun while still being flavorful. Service was great and attentive.

A cute, small cozy spot with cute painting and wall decor. I was surprised to see the size of the restaurant as I pictured it to be bigger. Nevertheless, waiter was very attentive given he was the only waiter there but still managed to take timely orders and refill our water. Food was good and had unique twists to it; my favorite for sure was the Szechuan chicken wings. The place had chill vibes with Indian music playing in the background. I will definitely return to try other items from the menu. One of the best Indian spot I've been to in a while!

In no mood to dine out, we opted for takeout from Gazab while in the neighbourhood, craving their Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani. The pickup was quick, and we were impressed by the cozy atmosphere of the small restaurant, which was 75% full. Back home, we dug into the biryani, which was a generous serving for two. While it tasted distinct from other Hyderabadi biryanis we've had, it was still decent. We're eager to revisit Gazab, dine in, and explore their other dishes. Based on our experience, I'd give it 4.5 stars, but since Yelp doesn't allow half-stars, I'm rounding it to 5. Looking forward to revisiting and reevaluating! No pressure Gazab !

However, sometimes you just take a chance and pray it lives up to the hype. Having a short period of time before our show at Radio City Music Hall, two of us shared a quick bite here after a few snacks on the nearby street fair. Just one order of Chicken Tikka Marsala, Garlic Naan, and a Mango Lassi. I'm actually not a big fan of Chicken Tikka Marsala because it's often too sweet and creamy for me. Though the chicken was overcooked, I did find this version quite differernt, in a good way. It had depth, and definitely a lot of heat, even on the medium level, the spiciness was very noticeable. My dining partner would have died without that Mango Lassi, which was yummy. Lmao On the other hand, the Garlic Naan was horrible. Instead of being a pillowy soft bread with some chew, it was stiff and cardboard-ish. This is one of the worst versions I had in NYC. Not sure how this major blunder can be overlooked. Naan is such an important part of Indian food culture, I can't believe they haven't realize that they need to fix this matter. Btw, service was efficient, almost too efficient that it felt rushed. One minute after we were seated, we were asked if ready to order. Again, we were asked literally one minute later. Then, just as we were finishing our meal, and while I'm still chewing my final bite of food, the bus boy cane to take our plates away. I was technically done, but would have like to have had a minute. Finally, without asking about desserts, another server came by with our check as if to say, "Please pay and make room for the next guests." I know we wanted a quick meal, but never thought we would be in and out of a situation down restaurant in less than 30 minutes. Hahaha Anyway, I live in Queens where we have same quality Indian restaurants at a much lower price point. Portions are bigger too. For me, this is an attempt at finding a gem that everyone seems to suggest. Unfortunately, it's hard for me to return to an Indian restaurant knowing they can't properly make naan.

There is a reason for the line: Annapurna Bhavan is good. It's not amazing good, but it's better than any of the Saravanaas locations in NYC. The food here is commendably non-greasy, like what amma might make at home. And the decor, AC, and clean bathroom also make the overall experienced far more civilized than the competition. The masala dosa is crisp and light, filled with a basic, but well made aloo masala, mostly just turmeric-tinged potato and black mustard seed. No nuts, peas, dal or even alliums, I don't think. (Please double check on the alliums if you follow a Jain diet.) The accompanying sambar is thick with dal. I personally enjoy a slightly soupier consistency, with more vegetables and more tamarind -- but of course that's completely a stylistic preference. The FIL loved it. I missed the tomato chutney that often comes with dosa. (It's summer for goodness sakes! I want my tomatoes!) There was standard issue coconut chutney on the side. Sambar vada was well made, a generous portion made with the same thick sambar that comes with dosa. We also tried the bhindi masala, which was so-so. Flavors were balanced, but a good portion of the okra in the dish was burnt and rubbery, unfortunately. Not sure what happened there. Drinks: Rose milk was VERY sweet. (I wish I'd thought to ask for another glass of plain milk to dilute it.) They have a brief, but decent wine list including whatever crisp white wine the Pardner ordered (guessing it was a sauvignon blanc). I frankly don't love alcoholic beverages with Indian vegetarian food -- maybe I feel too sacrilegious -- but if you do, Annapurna Bhavan appears to have a full bar.

Dhamaka translates to "explosion" in Hindi, and the name perfectly captures the restaurant's bold,…read moreunapologetic approach to Indian cuisine. Dhamaka opened in February 2021 inside Essex Market on Manhattan's Lower East Side. It is part of Unapologetic Foods, the restaurant group founded by restaurateur Roni Mazumdar and Chef Chintan Pandya. Rather than serving the familiar Indian-American standards, Dhamaka focuses on intensely flavored, rustic regional dishes from across India--many of them rarely found on restaurant menus. On my most recent visit, I sat at the bar without a reservation, which is one of the advantages of stopping by spontaneously. I ordered the Kashmiri Gosht Chaamp, a standout appetizer priced at $24. The dish is inspired by the comforting, homestyle cooking of Kashmir. Boneless lamb loin is coated in fragrant garam masala, smoky Kashmiri chiles, and a light chickpea-flour batter, then cooked in rich clarified butter, or ghee. The result is exceptional: a lightly crisp exterior surrounding remarkably tender, juicy lamb, with the warm aromatics and chile providing plenty of flavor without overwhelming the meat. I also ordered a white basmati rice to soak up the intensely flavored ghee remaining on the plate. It is a simple but highly satisfying way to finish the dish. I paired the Kashmiri Gosht Chaamp with one of Dhamaka's Unapologetic house beers, created through a collaboration between Chef Chintan Pandya's Unapologetic Foods and Brooklyn-based Transmitter Brewing. The beers were specifically developed to complement the restaurant's intense spices and chile-forward cooking. They are generally light, crisp, and dry, making them particularly effective alongside Dhamaka's richer and more heavily spiced dishes. The Basmati Rice Premium Lager is particularly fitting for the restaurant: its light body and subtle floral character provide a refreshing counterpoint to Dhamaka's bold spices. Dhamaka's Culinary Philosophy True to its name, Dhamaka delivers an "explosion" of flavor. The menu deliberately moves away from familiar dishes such as chicken tikka masala and instead explores lesser-known provincial specialties, street food, and offal. The restaurant's cooking is rustic, intensely spiced, and unapologetically regional. This is Indian food designed to challenge expectations rather than conform to them. Signature Dishes to Try If you are exploring the menu, several dishes I have enjoyed over the years: * Champaran Meat: Mutton slow-cooked in a rustic clay pot with a pool of dark chile oil and an entire head of roasted garlic. * Goat Neck Dum Biryani: An intensely aromatic biryani featuring goat and rice, traditionally sealed in a heavy pot with flatbread. * Paneer Tikka: Freshly made in-house paneer with an exceptionally creamy, delicate texture. The Atmosphere Dhamaka occupies a corner space inside Essex Market, with an industrial yet colorful interior, vibrant murals, and bright lighting. The seating is intimate and tightly arranged, and the room can become loud and energetic--a setting that matches the restaurant's exuberant cooking. Planning Your Visit Dinner reservations can be competitive, so booking ahead is advisable. That said, the bar can be a useful option for a spontaneous visit, as my most recent experience demonstrated. Dhamaka is not trying to be the Indian restaurant for everyone. It is a restaurant with a very specific point of view: bold spices, unfamiliar regional dishes, rich flavors, and food that refuses to apologize for being Indian. For me, the Kashmiri Gosht Chaamp and an Unapologetic beer made an excellent combination--a particularly memorable way to experience what Dhamaka does best.
