    Sri Lankan Crab Curry
    Ryan K.

One of those places that you pass by but never go to. Sigiri offers a light ambience with a charming light vibrant scenery. We went on a Friday evening and the crowd wasn't too oppressive. Certainly, decent for last minute reservations. We started off with drinks. My friend got the green juice. Not certain what it was but it was very sweet. We had the fish cutlet for dinner and some type of chili sauce. Pretty yummy. I was content with just a bite. It came with four pieces. Crispy exterior, kinda creamy interior with what tasted like flakes of white fish meat. The sauce was tart and paired well with the deep fried aspect of the dish. The deviled cuttlefish came out next. Very clean dish. Chunks of cuttlefish and bell peppers in a simple sauce and served with rice. Delicious and simple. Crab curry was next. Broth was briny and umami with potent south Asian flavors. This was my favorite dish. I'm used to eating crab with butter or vinegar but this was something new to me. We used the hoppers which were crispy and had a sweet/tangy aftertaste. I dumped a serving of rice in the gravy to take home later. It's good for breakfast the next day w an egg. Beef kothu roti was fine. Pretty yummy but at this point I was pretty full. Kinda homogenous in texture with a gentle chew. My friends liked this. There was a beefy flavor and the beef is very tender so you don't necessarily catch those meaty bites. I think we determined with these meals that if you regularly eat spicy food, the medium is more mild and the spicy is perfect. Service was fine. Takes a bit to get your food but I'd say the value was well worth the wait. Bring good company and you won't be disappointed with this location. Cash only some come prepared

    Dry Fish Curry

First time trying Sri Lankan food, I think there's potential but just didn't order the correct dishes for our pallets 1. Fish springroll - this was more like a fish stick than an East Asian spring roll. Not bad just wasn't what we were expecting 2. Sri Lankan Nasi Goreng - This was everyone's favorite, I usually avoid getting fried rice but this is unique and worth trying. 3. Dry fish curry - this has potential, but the dry fish was like dried fish jerky. We were expecting Sichuan style dry fish. The fish was overly salty but the curry sauce was decent. 4. Pol Roti - Was thinking it would be similar to naan but it was pretty thick and dense. We all had a food coma after and felt sluggish lol I would still return now knowing what to order for the future. We came around lunch time and there weren't many people, server was attentive. Bathroom was extremely small. I liked that we didn't feel rushed and could take our time talking.

Whole Grain Sri Lankan Red Rice

This was my first time eating Sri Lankan food and it was pretty darn good! I had a delivery order of Chicken Koththu Roti, Hot Battered Calamari, Fish Sri Lankan Stew, Dhal Curry and Whole Grain Sri Lankan Red Rice. I found the calamari to be the most tasty, but who doesn't like a nice dish of fried calamari, when made right! Other dishes were good, as well. The fish in the Fish Sri Lankan Stew was mild tasting but overall the dish was spicy and flavorful. The red rice was perfectly made, with just the slightest amount of crunch, as it should be. The Dahl Curry was a pleasant variation of dahl with "curry" seasoning, whatever one might imagine that to be, since spices vary in curries. The Chicken Kotthu Roti is a dish of chopped roti bread, cooked with vegetables, chicken (in this case) and spices. It is similar to a South Indian dish, I recently had at Annapurna Bhavan, Kotthu Paratha, which just substitutes the roti bread for paratha bread. I think I prefer the Kotthu Roti because it is a lighter dish, as would be expected by switching to the lighter roti bread. It came with a small container of "hot sauce" to apply as you wish, and I poured a good amount over it for some extra heat. Portions were generous. I definitely enjoyed the Sri Lankan food, though I have never been to Sri Lanka, so I cannot vouch for the authenticity. Delivery and packaging were very good. Highly recommended, plus it travels well in a delivery order.

I come here really often. The food is outstanding and the service is quick and efficient. I will say the flours are really authentic to the region and we always have five dishes that we order each time. They have a really small space I would say maybe 10 tables total but they can see it about four people at each table. Be warned if you are not able to consume spicy food since the food can get really spicy, but I will say that the staff is really helpful with recommending what you should try and reducing the spice levels for you. I highly recommend the kottu roti, fish curry, crab fried rice and wattalaappam. We like the ginger drink a lot as well.

Cute restaurant located on the second floor (blink and you will miss it) Service: excellent Water was refilled quickly which was great since everything was fairly spicy. Best dishes: - eggplant: crowd favorite. Minimal spice - Pepper pork: vibrant. Onions and peppers gave it a nice flavor so it wasn't just overwhelming spice. -Black pork curry was delicious but so overwhelmingly spicy. Okay -Tuna was dry. -roti was a huge portion enough for three people, but the chicken was very dry. Everything else about the dish was perfect. Would combine the black pork curry with this, and it would be perfect get a side of rice if you don't order the roti Price point was very reasonable

**Cash or Venmo only** Walked in at 6:30 PM on a Saturday and there was no wait for 2 of us. Aaapa was perfect, and I loved the Kotthu roti (chicken). Hot battered calamari was also great. Will be back!!

Mom Lives across the street, didn't know this place existed for 20 years. In any case parked the car in front and just stumbled upon it. It's off street level and easily missed. The place is small, a converted NYC railroad flat, looked worn-out. Ordered Crab Fried Rice, Dhol Vode - lentil patty with traditional Sri Lanka spices and Beef Cutlet - ground beef, veggies and spices, deep fried in batter The fried rice was OK, tasty, fluffy, The Dhol lentil patty, just skip it, more like a week old dried baguette or trying to bite through an ice cube - watch your teeth. Beef Cutlet - where is the beef? The condiments were quite spicy but otherwise this not a memorable meal BTW this is a cash only and BYOB

Great Sri Lankan food. The fish patties were a little dry on the inside but had a great crispy and flaky shell. The vegetable spring rolls were like a samosa on the inside but a mozzarella stick on the outside, very fun. The entree portion sizes were a bit small but delicious. The kotthu roti was my favorite (loved the mix of noodles and rice), but the calamari was also good (and a bit spicy). The black pork curry was also good, but I would've preferred it with rice (which it didn't come with) than the appa the waiter recommended we get with it (as an additional order). I was worried about spice levels, and it was pretty spicy but not unbearable! The place is small but they were kind enough to move some tables to fit our group of six. No line when I got there at 7:30 on a Friday, but it filled up by the end of our dinner. My friends noticed service was slow but I enjoyed being able to take my time.

Watalappam. $6. Nicely flavored small dessert. Rich with some spice and sweetness

I went here to this small cash only Sri Lankan restaurant a while ago while walking home from work. The guy serving was friendly and the food was excellent. I didn't bother with a drink and decided between ordering the Kotthu Roti to compare to the versions at Anjappar/a few other spots but I decided to go with the Chicken Lamprais instead. Said Lamprais was $20 as it was listed as a Dutch Influenced "Special Occasion" dish of flavored rice served with chicken, fish cutlet, deep-fried boiled egg, ash plantain, and eggplant wrapped & baked in a banana leaf to give this dish a unique flavor. This was an excellent take on Lamprais and nicely spicy with a notable amount of chili and black pepper. There was also a bit of sweetness from the ash plantain or cooked eggplant I presume. The piece of chicken there which presumably was cooked as a black curry was very tender while the egg had a nice light fry though I couldn't taste much of the fish cutlet. This was a very good version and I'd go back for it. I also got the Watalappam for dessert for $6 listed as a rich pudding of Malay origin made of coconut milk, brown palm sugar, cashew nuts, eggs, and various spices including cinnamon, cloves cardamom, and nutmeg. While small, the pudding was rich and sweet with some spice presumably primarily from the cinnamon. It was tasty as well. I'm happy that they didn't lower the spice levels and found the food excellent. Would go back with a group of 4 or so and try a bunch of the dishes here.

Reading through the reviews, I feel like too many people are missing the best items on this menu. Must haves on your table are the hot calamari with peppers and scallions as an appetizer + the crab curry with a side of string hoppers for an entree. Getting this plus another rice based dish or the kotthu would be the perfect order for 2 people. The calamari is a sleeper hit, which is like a deluxe version of a basic fried calamari you'd find at an Italian or Mediterranean restaurant with butter, spicy peppers and scallion sauce. Amazing. Crab curry with string hoppers is one of the best value crab dishes in the city and delicious. Can't to wrong!

    Chicken Lamprais and chicken curry

First time trying Sri Lankan food! Appetizer sampler was pretty good, though I only really enjoyed one which I believe was the fish roll (top). My favorite dishes were the crab fried rice and the hoppers (aappa) which look and taste like thin crepes. You're supposed to pair it with curry but I liked eating it plain.. The chicken lamprais didn't really stick out to me. The chicken curry was a little dry. The kotthu roti was interesting but also didn't really stick out to me. Minus the crab fried rice and hoppers, the rest of the food had overwhelmingly strong spice flavors and it was honestly a little too much for me. I felt like I couldn't really taste the food itself because all I tasted were blends of spices. Idk if that's simply what Sri Lankan cuisine is. If so, then it's probably not my cup of tea (im sorry) but the food seemed to be a hit with everyone else and it's a popular restaurant so I'd say give it a try at least once! The service was fine and the interior is super cozy but a bit cramped. A very tiny spot but feels intimate and more personal in that way appetizer sampler: 8/10 hoppers/aappa: 10/10 crab fried rice: 10/10 chicken lamprais: 7/10 chicken curry: 7/10

    Chicken Lamprais

Love the Chicken Lamprias!!! Also, tried Crab Curry with Appams we thought it would go well with it but Crab Curry was too thin so probably a string hopper would be a good choice. Good service too.

Torn. I give them credit for giving us the space to have fun. Bought out the restaurant for a decent amount. That said, I knew going in that we wouldn't get our money's worth in terms of food. Essentially we built a prix fixe menu but the limits they placed on choices and portions meant we'd easily be ahead if we ordered a la carte. However, I also have to recognize the value of essentially having the entire space for a private party. Food wise, it was solid. But considering the style of food, it's way too limited. That they allowed BYO was a big reason we chose them. All in, it was a good time. Appreciate them putting up with our chaos as we drunkenly watched playoff baseball.

Then come early or be prepared to stand in line! He's a one-man show and waits of +1 hour are not uncommon. Pretty much everything is made to order. I arrived a bit after 10 am; Thiru was still setting up. He does have a helper for set-up. Three of us were early birds. He offered me hot tea for the wait, then shortly began preparing my pondicherry dosa. This man is such a kind, trusting soul! A nanny approached and wanted some samosas for her toddler. She didn't have cash or her phone (NY Dosas accepts Venmo and Zelle), so her gave her 2 samosas and told her to pay him later! Also, he does not seem to check if your payment went through. His love of what he does (he's been at it since 2001) shines through his actions and interactions with customers. He takes photos with pretty much everyone. Upon arrival, we were told we could choose between the banana leaf special or the à la carte menu. However, when I tried to order from the à la carte menu, I was told it would take at least an hour to receive the food and that we should order the banana leaf special instead. If the à la carte menu isn't realistically available, it shouldn't be offered. We ordered four vegetarian banana leaf specials and six non-vegetarian specials, along with a Diet Coke and a ginger ale. The service and food quality were extremely disappointing. The banana leaves were brought out with a few items already placed on them -- all of which were cold. The curries followed about 15 minutes later and were also cold. The appetizers didn't arrive until at least 30 minutes later, and only after we reminded the staff multiple times. Our drinks didn't arrive for nearly an hour. To make matters worse, the waiter substituted seltzer for ginger ale without informing us because they didn't have ginger ale. When we pointed out that this was not what we ordered, he seemed annoyed rather than apologetic. The poori arrived after we had already finished eating, and only two were brought out for a table of ten. Slow service is an understatement. Adding to the frustration, we were told ordering à la carte would take an hour, yet the table next to us -- served by a different waiter -- ordered à la carte and received their food before their banana leaf specials arrived. Interestingly, when we asked for the check, it arrived immediately. We were automatically charged a 20% gratuity, and the waiter then asked if we wanted to add an additional tip. When we expressed our disappointment about the cold food and poor service, his response was dismissive and unprofessional: "There are 25 items -- how much can you eat?". For clarity, the banana leaf special does not even include 25 items, making that comment both inaccurate and inappropriate Cold food, slow and disorganized service, poor communication, and unprofessional behavior made this an unacceptable experience. I would not recommend this restaurant.

It's my second visit to this place and I still don't know if I like or dislike this place! ( my…read morelast visit here was in Feb 2020) This is yet another Indian find in the South Brunswick area. Old Chutney Mary location reopened as Ember. Had a not so great experience with the food and service with multiple visits. Some items stand out while others are just ok. Food looks good with wonderful playing but certain items don't go beyond the looks & plating. Drinks : Full service bar set up quite nicely for a Indian restaurant and I find people sitting at the bar ordering drinks which is a win! Here are things I tried and how they fared in my vie Recommended Appetizers : Malai chicken - Delicately spiced and laced with cream cooked in a Tandoor oven Tandoori chicken - we ordered he whole chicken and it had the perfect tandoori marinade and cooked to perfection. Bihari Chicken - Very different form the stereotypical tandoori formulas. Pizza Naan - was the best of the appetizers. Naan topped with chillies & cheese and lightly browned - A pizza of sorts Lahori Chicken tikka - was a bit spicy , but I liked it as it had good flavor . Other appetizers Chilli Fish - Nothing great . Please skip Paneer Tikka- Standard Indian offering . We could still taste the marinade coated as it was not cooked through which was a bit off putting. Black pepper chicken- super dry that I had to wrestle wit it. Please skip Chilli chicken dry - was way too sweet - they replaced it based on feedback with a better tasting one . Gobi Manchurian Dry - Sub Par - could have been a bit more crispy . Entrees Butter chicken - Quite good - but nothing to beat Mughalai Darbar ! Methi Malai Mutter- Creamy rich flavorful curry & not heavy on peas which I liked. Methi flavor ( Fenugreek greens ) is pronounced which makes the curry taste good. Paneer Tikka Masala- Standard tikka masala like any other Indian restaurant. Nothing to rave about ! Malai Kofta- served in a clay pot - looks good and tastes equally good. Dessert Cassata ice cream - Delectable - if you happen to be here try it! - it's only found at select Indian restaurants . Mango & Pistachio kulfi - yet another Indian ice cream that you shouldn't miss. Yumm flavor bomb ...must have ... Tres Leches cake -was very moist light and had the perfect sweetness. Other items Garlic naan - crispy garlic flavored naan bread - standard fare Raita- creamy yogurt not sour at all. Was a welcome change to be served quality raita with good yogurt. Green chutney , Sweet dates chutney & onion salad - despite being freebies they tasted. Goes to show they don't compromise on quality My recommendation is to try this place once . Their service is good and so is the ambience . Pick the right dishes and you may like the food.
