I visit NYC every year and have stayed in the West Village the past 3 years. It took me 3 stays before I was finally able to experience the deliciousness and kind hospitality of NY Dosas and the Dosa man, Thiru. I first had to find the cart's exact location in Washington Square Park--he's in the southwest corner by the playground. Then I had to find his schedule--he generally works 4 variable days per week from 10:30 am-2:00 pm. It's best to follow him on social media (I use Instagram) where he posts his working days. Then come early or be prepared to stand in line! He's a one-man show and waits of +1 hour are not uncommon. Pretty much everything is made to order. I arrived a bit after 10 am; Thiru was still setting up. He does have a helper for set-up. Three of us were early birds. He offered me hot tea for the wait, then shortly began preparing my pondicherry dosa. This man is such a kind, trusting soul! A nanny approached and wanted some samosas for her toddler. She didn't have cash or her phone (NY Dosas accepts Venmo and Zelle), so her gave her 2 samosas and told her to pay him later! Also, he does not seem to check if your payment went through. His love of what he does (he's been at it since 2001) shines through his actions and interactions with customers. He takes photos with pretty much everyone. This was my first dosa ever, and it was delish. Everything here is vegan/vegetarian. The rice and lentil crepe had a crisp texture and was filled with veggies and potatoes. There was a coconut chutney alongside, as well as a small cup of lentil soup with veggies and 2 sauces, a spicy green one and a sweet mango one. He has a variety of drinks available also. I also ordered a samosa, which are premade out of necessity, and it too was delish. Overall a great cheap meal made by a genuine star. Nearby Michelin-starred Southern Indian restaurant Semma also serves dosas, which I'm sure are also delish, but perhaps not star-made. read more

New Yorkers do not wait on a line for mediocre food so this is a big accomplishment for this food cart. It is in WSP, where so many of the downtown workers and NYU students come to enjoy break. The cart usually has a 10-20 people line, ranging from 25-50 minutes wait. I must say that I get the hype. The ambiance is so lively, given that it's in WSP. I ordered the pondicherry dosa which came with a dipping sauce and coconut chutney. The flavors are beyond incredible and I must say that this is the best dosa I've ever had. I have always wanted to try dosas, so where better than NYDosa to get my first bite! We got in line at 11, and it took 1.5 hours before we reached the front. This is truly a one man scene, and he is iconic. It was a bright day at the park, so it was not too bad. Very spacious, and we took turns walking around while waiting. By the time we got to the front, we ordered a Special Pondicherry and a Samosa. He is so kind and hardworking, we had a great conversation. We sat at a bench nearby to try the dosa, and wow. It was delicious. Everything was just so good! The crispiness of the dosa, the flavor of the filling, the chutney and sauces. It all goes so well together. The samosa was also delicious and worth the $3. Truly the best bite. I would definitely recommend!! read more

Great rec by my Indian-Canadian friend! (Thanks, Princejeet!) He told me years ago to try the dosa, and I finally got to visit. I've never had a dosa before, and I didn't know what it was before he told me about it. This is a cart in Washington Square Park. After seeing so many college students around here, I spotted the line right away. I waited at least 40 minutes around 2 PM on a Friday. By the time I was halfway, the guy said he sold out of the special one. Then later he had to cut off the line because he said he would not have enough for everyone. To be honest, the liquids/sauces looked unappetizing, like there is a bright green thing all over it. BUT, to my surprise, the green sauce tasted the best. The soup in the cup was pretty flavorful. I got two things, and it came out to $22. The portion looks big. Cash or Venmo. No credit card. read more

This cart is really a staple. The owner had so many fans and visitors. The line is long since they take 1 group at a time to give everyone the best service! Always excited to head over to Washington square park for lunch if Thiru Kumar is open. Be sure to check Twitter to see if they are open on a given day and the. Stop by for lunch for a great experience! The lines can get quite long so be aware. I last went on a Friday and we arrived at 12:15. We didn't get our dosas until around 1:15 so would recommend coming earlier closer to 11 on peak days for lunch. Fresh dosas made to your liking are prepared wonderfully. You can watch Thirus art first hand as you see your food get prepared. The cart is located on the south west corner of Washington square park and is always a great vibe. He also serves uttapam, pondicherry and samosas. Personally a huge fan of the samosas he prepares. Provides tons of chutney and sambar to go along with your order. He will also make the dosas as spicy to your liking and extra crispy if you request it. Overall, a great dosa experience. He is also cash only but accepts Venmo with a 1 dollar upcharge on your order. Thiru is always a great energy and serves with a smile on his face. It was our first time going to NY Dosas and there are a few things that makes NY Dosas special and stand out: 1. First and foremost, Kandar - he is, as everyone states, a kind man, who works incredibly hard, making dosas by himself for hundreds of people a day. 2. It has been a long since I've been back to NY Dosas but it hasn't changed one bit. Walking on the outskirts of Washington Square Park on a Saturday morning Thiru's helper dropped a bottle of water which made me look in the general direction where the cart was. I couldn't believe my eyes, NY Dosas cart was right there in plain sight! I happily stepped over and asked how he was and when he was open. I couldn't believe Thiru was manning the cart, super friendly as always, and ready to make dosas at 10:15am! The Masala Dosa was one of my favorites way back when and it didn't disappoint today. I always got the double Coconut Chutney like I did before with my crispy dosa with potatoes and a hint of spice. I like my dosa crispy and Thiru's first try was a little soggy so he did a redo without me even asking. If that's not a sign of someone who not only respects his craft and his customer,.... Kudos to the man, the legend. My Dosa took like four minutes to be ready and I wasted no time parking myself on a nearby bench to chow down. A $9 meal that was completely satisfying was the end result. I used to visit more often when I worked nearby. Back then I thought Thiru was in a different spot but he clearly has pictures to show where he's been setting up shop and I don't know how I've missed him for so long! Incredible food at incredible prices. You get so much food with a single order of dosas. The potato filling is so flavorful and soft. The outside crepe is light and crispy. Yummy dosa and such a nice owner! I've wanted to try NY Dosas for the longest time but the wait is always very long (over an hour) as he makes each dosa fresh. I waited around 30 mins on a Sat morning and these were worth the wait. I ordered the Pondicherry Dosa spicy and was able to pay with venmo. Really crispy and flavorful dosa! Only thing was that some of the veggies were clearly going bad/old so I had to pick out some of the lettuce that was already a little red. Besides that, the quality of the dosa was great and the portion was large for what I paid. read more

Okay be prepared to wait 1 hr but they are phenomenal dosas!! My MIL is South Indian, and I've been to Semma 10x so I know these are the real deal :) it's one sweet, talented man at a cart whipping out dosas every minute and he does not miss. Thiru is the hardest working, most earnest, most deserving man on the face of the planet. He is the kindest person, with the biggest smile, that could light up the world. He also serves the best dosa in the world too. Flavorful, spicy (though mild peeps can get a satisfactory dish too). Such a value at around 10 dollars for such a large amount of delicious food. Comes with sauces and a delish vegan soup. And you can dine and people watch in Washington Square Park. He also has vegan drumsticks now, and also serves samosas. He has a number of drinks, including ginger beer, ginger ale, Diet Coke, regular sodas, waters, and more. Accepts payments through multiple sources, including cash and Venmo. Thiru is a legend. His dosa might be the last meal I would have on my last day, on the face of this earth. read more

Finally, no long line today. Heavy rain showers had just subsided. 4 people ahead of me. Dosa Man makes everything as you order so thats why the line is long. I still ended up waiting a good 20 mins but I had time and compared to other days thats a short wait. I got Masala Dosa, I watched as Dosa Man skillfully spread the pancake like mixture into the perfect circle. Once it cooked he filled it with the fuffiest seasoned potatoes. They are chunky yet fluffy. I asked for spicy . He puts a peppery coconut chutney inside and there's also a white coconut chutney (not spicy) on the side. A small cup of lentils and veggie soup on the side. I also got a samosa . Same potato stuffing that is so comforting. I only had half my dosa and saved the rest so I could eat my samosa. I was able to sit today and enjoy it in the not so crowded park. I usually have to take it home. The park bench was still damp after the rain but the potato gave me all the comfort and warmth I needed. Br prepared to wait if you go. Dosa Man's warm smile and kindness will make the time go by. A NY institution, the NY Dosas cart has been around for years feeding locals in the Village. Remember to check his Instagram page, as it's not guaranteed that he'll be out working every day. We tried the special Pondicherry dosa which was delicious. The owner, who is incredibly personable, is willing to customize your order to how you like it (i.e., how spicy you want it). The dosa was crispy, filled with great fillings, and had a slight tang to them. They're cheap and filling as well, starting at about ten bucks. Highly recommended! Cash or Venmo only. read more

Perfection! Hot crispy dosas. I love coming with a friend bc the owner will split the different kinds of dosas for you so you can have variety. My go-to is splitting the Pondicherry Dosa and the Mixed Veggie Uthappam. The dosas are perfectly crispy and packed with flavorful filling. The Uthappam is fluffier and has tons of veggies on top. I also love the lentil soup that comes with each order- perfect when it's cold outside. The line can get long, so be prepared to wait a bit. Try coming on a weekday for lunch, I've never waited more than 10 min. read more

A trip to NY Dosas is an experience worthy of your time. There will be a wait, but you will be handsomely rewarded at the end and may even make some friends along the way. I love dosas and was anxious to try this beloved food cart. We went on a weekday and waited about an hour - but luckily we had some good company in line to make the time go faster. We went on our first day in NYC which was Friday. For lunch, we sought out NY Dosas since we badly wanted some good, authentic Indian grub. There was a line when we got there and it was 94 deg F that day. Was it worth the wait of over 30 minutes? Heck yeah! The dosa was amazing and the samosas were tasty. We got both at spicy level. They also came with sauces. The dosa came with coconut chutney - amazing! We paid $18 for the dosa, two samosas and two bottles of water. Definitely a good value for your money for NYC. We learned they're taking some time off and won't be back until Tuesday so I'm glad we went today. The owner was extremely friendly and engaging. I can totally see why he is famous. Like many, we were lured here by the YouTube video. Plus, my partner is South Indian, so we love a good dosa. We came on a Wednesday afternoon. Wait was about an hour. Not gonna lie, I got a little hangry, but when we finally reached the front of the line it was worth it. We went with the pondicherry special, masala dosa, and a samosa, plus mango juice. This dosa spot in Washington Square Park is run by the sweetest guy and is instagram-famous, so expect long lines on a weekend. We came here at noon on a Saturday and waited an hour, but it was absolutely worth it. I got to try the special pondicherry which was stuffed with potatoes and veggies (4.5/5), an off-the menu special which was basically an extra crispy pondicherry dosa (4.5/5), and the samosa (not my favorite, but affordable, huge and filling). The whole meal only cost $24, and came with lentil soup and coconut chutney on the side. The off-the-menu special was super crisp and paper thin, albeit harder to eat. The special pondicherry dosa was easier to eat (could hold it like a sandwich) and I really enjoyed the crisp exterior and the soft, spongy, crepe like texture towards the center of the dosa. Only thing to note is that is because the dosa is so thin, it cools off rather quickly, so it is best enjoyed immediately (perfect to enjoy in the park on a nice day) while it is still warm! read more

I made a stop to Washington Park with my friend and we were able to run into the NYC Dosa Man! I had seen his video a couple of years ago on YouTube and it has been high on my food bucket list to eat here when I would get the chance to make it to New York City. His food cart is open normally from 11am to 3pm and he posts on Instagram whether if he will be at Washington Park that day and the timings of his service. I recommend though going as early as you can because we were lucky to be some of the last customers towards the end where we got the last batch of food served with remaining ingredients since this place is so popular. The food here is truly authentic and delicious South Indian food that is being made fresh and completely vegan. With his remaining ingredients, the Dosa Man all of us the remaining chutneys (coconut, dry chutney, cilantro chutney, and another orange chutney), sambar, fresh Uttapams, and fresh dosa. The food was great and so generous for such a low price. On top of such great food though coming from this small cart, his service was absolutely outstanding! He recognizes those who often come to his carts. One of the customers had a physical disability and was standing towards the back of the line and he asked her to sit down and made a meal and served her immediately. A customer had visited him back in 2009 and met him again 15 years in 2024. This place is truly special and a must go if you get the chance to stop by Washington Square park. NY Dosa, in Washington square park most weekdays when it's warm out, up until 3 or 4pm, or when he runs out of food. There's no line earlier in the day, but at lunch and after it's a wait, which is fine, you're in the park and talk in the line, a plus. Bring cash if possible, he has Venmo. It's awesome, as an understatement. He can easily raise prices 50% for what you get. read more

Waited in line about 15 minutes on a Saturday morning to dry this famous dosa cart. Unfortunately, the food was... just okay. Having eaten lots of South Indian food and having many dosas, the ones we tried simply lacked flavor. It may be worth trying if you don't have any reliable dosa spots you frequent, but certainly not worth waiting longer than we did, let alone an hour as some people have mentioned in their reviews. That having been said, the owner/chef seems like a great guy and treats each customer like a guest he is inviting into his home. If you check this place out, it will likely end up being more for the experience than the actual food. read more

Had to wait in line for over an hour on a Saturday late afternoon to grab a bite at this one, but it was an experience on its own. We got the samosas, the Pondicherry dosas and some soda pops. The food quality and quantity is really good for the price, and the ambiance includes Washington State Park. If you want just the snacks, you can actually skip the line and grab something directly. I think that's what I would do the next time. The wait times can get really long unfortunately. The owner was super nice and kind! read more

100% worth the wait. Get there early though! He opens before the time listed on Google maps and runs out of food at around noon sometimes. He is so friendly though and treats his customers like family. Check his Instagram page to see if he is open each day! The dosas were so affordable at around $10 each and they are giant. He has many different condiments/toppings for each and the dosas come out crispy and savory with the condiments. Expect to wait on line but it's well worth the wait read more

Note: If you're looking to double check his hours go to his twitter page. He is active almost daily and posts updates on hour changes and whether he's open or not. Long line but worth the wait! Lucky for us we had fun talking to the people behind us to make the 40 minute wait go by. NY Dosas is conveniently located in Washington square park. You can't miss it once you see the long line behind it. The menu is small and easy to understand. There are two dosas to choose from and one uttapam, then either samosa or a vegan drumstick for an appetizer. He takes cash or venmo for payment. When ordering you can add mild medium or spicy levels to your dish. Two of us split one spicy masala dosa which also comes with sambar and coconut chutney. There's also some type of mint chutney he puts at the bottom of the dosa that was amazing, and I'm usually not a big fan of mint chutneys. The potato filling was delicious as well. I've heard so much about the famous NY Dosa cart and glad I finally got to try! read more

I've come by here multiple of times but always when the line has been cut off. Finally got to try it on a less busy weekday. Got a regular masala dosa. It was very filling for something without meat. The dosa is also very thin and crispy, so I wasn't expecting it to be as filling as it was. The dosa tasted very much like sourdough to me. Potatoes were spiced well, but I think it could've use a little more salt. The coconut chutney was okay for me, I thought there could've been more flavor. It was a little bland. Dosa Man is famous in NYC for a reason. We got there around 10:30am on a Saturday. It was 30 minutes before he supposedly opened, but he had already started making dosas. There was a line formed already. We only had to wait about 20-25 minutes for our food which is a lot less time than most people have to wait. So my best advice is to come before he opens. My husband and I shared a Masala Dosa and Mixed Vegetable Uttapam. We loved both. He even cut them in half for us. Washington Square park is beautiful. Step 1 - check the Instagram page. Do not pass go, do not do anything else until you've made sure he's actually going to be setup the day you want to go. Step 2 - you've confirmed he'll be there, now cross your fingers and pray that the line won't be too insane. Step 3 - bring cash unless you want to pay via Venmo. Step 4 - enjoy your dosa and fend off the local pigeons that seemingly crave the absolute deliciousness. Seriously, this place was worth it. I don't know if I'd wait two hours, but the other people that arrived around the same time as we did on a Saturday afternoon had to order something simply because there was no line and they'd never seen it shorter than an hour. NY Dosas is worth the wait. And unless you arrive 30-45 minutes before they open, you'll probably be waiting in line for at least an hour. But don't let that stop you. It's not only the vegan Indian food that's worth the wait, but also the man behind the restaurant. He is genuine, friendly, and jolly. Had to come to the viral NY dosas to hang out with the dosa man and try his infamous masala dosa! Coming from the Bay Area, at first the dosa didn't hit as hard as expected - potatoes were dried out and the sambhar wasn't the most flavorful I've had. The dosa itself was good and had some great spice, and complimented the coconut chutney really well, but yes, I've had better. Also, be prepared to wait up to an hour for your dosa and bring cash (he does accept Venmo). Regardless, you should definitely come here cause the man himself is the most good natured, kind and friendly dude who will greet you with a smile and give you his hard work on a plate. One of the best street food I have ever had. He also treats every customer and order individually with great diligence. I was visiting NYC from LA, but what I've been told, that there is always a line for this guy. The food is worth it. I would estimate my experience from waiting in line, and eating the food at the park about one hour during a busy Friday lunch rush. This place was worth it. I would definitely eat here again. NY Dosas is the first ever South Indian food cart serving strictly vegetarian, vegan food which is also wheat free and gluten free. We are located in Washington Square Park (South Side) on w4th & Sullivan. All our menu items are under $7. Our dosas, naturally fermented crepes made out of rice and lentils, are very healthy and fresh, served with a side of coconut chutney and multi vegetable lentil soup. There are a variety of different dosas, including our Vendy Award winning Pondicherry Masala Dosa ($7) and Special Jaffna Lunch (made with my grandmother's secret recipe - only available at NY Dosas). We also serve snacks, such as samosas, veggie drumsticks and veggie roti. Other menu options include idly (steamed lentil paddies) and Singapore Noodles (served on Thursdays only). Established in 2001.

I wanted to start something completely different that no one else had done. I had the idea of serving South Indian vegan food on a food cart at a time when hot dogs and pretzels were the usual food cart fare. I finally put my idea into action in 2001. Now, 14 years later, I'm still doing what I love, serving great food to great people. In 2003, I won the New York Magazine's Best of New York award for Sidewalk Dining (Food Cart). Then in 2007, I won the Vendy Award for the Best Street Cart, a prized award for all food cart vendors. NY Dosas has been listed in countless tourist books around the world and I am proud to say we have many fan clubs worldwide! The best item we ordered was the breakfast sandwich with hashbrown, scrambled eggs, and sausage. I think the eggs are cooked with cheese, and as someone who typically does not eat cheese, I didn't mind it. I don't know if I'll be back again - I think the concept of an asian twist on the classic diner does sound intriguing but difficult to execute. I also wasn't a big fan of the wait time. If you typically like heavier, diner food then this spot might be the place for you!

The food is where Mountain House really stands out. We ordered a few dishes and found the Mapo tofu one of the highlights, with a deep, rich flavor and a balanced level of heat that made it feel more complex than many versions of the dish we have tried. The Sichuan-style dishes also showcased the restaurant's strength with bold mala flavors, bringing the characteristic numbing spice without completely overwhelming the other elements of the dish. The portions also make this a better option for sharing, especially if you want to try several dishes. Overall, Mountain House is a strong option for Sichuan food. The combination of bold flavors, comfortable atmosphere, and attentive service makes it a place worth returning to, especially if you enjoy spicy Chinese cuisine and want a restaurant that focuses on the flavors and techniques of Sichuan cooking rather than just convenience.

They seem to be known for their hand-pulled noodles and spicy flavors. I did see chefs making noodles when I went. We ordered: -Cleaved cucumbers (5/10- these were good but average) -Fried sticky eggplant (8/10- these were fried but you could still taste the flavors and was a good size) -Very spicy pork dan dan (8/10- delicious but more reliant on the sichaun spice over flavors; not too spicy if you are used to it but can pack a punch if you aren't a spicy food eater; the noodles were great). It's one of the larger stalls in the market and has some seating, but not enough, and the market seating is very limited as well. I ordered the hibiscus lemonade and the very spicy Dan Dan Mian. I loved watching the staff prepare the noodles while waiting. My bowl was huge and absolutely delicious. It was very spicy as promised, but not too spicy that it was rendered not enjoyable. I looked at other orders and everything looked delicious, leading to only semi-regret of my choice. My lemonade was very good. I'm very much looking forward to returning.
