Chicken wrap + beef platter
Thomas S.

I remember trying The Halal Guys 13 years ago when I last visited New York City. It was a long time ago so I don't remember too much other then the long line, and the food being pretty solid and having large portions. Since this is a NYC staple and it's been so long, I knew I had to come again this trip. I ordered a chicken shawarma wrap as well as a beef platter. I thought the wrap was very good. Very saucy, and tasty, however, I just found the platter to be a bit bland. It almost felt like it was missing something. Also I think the portion sizes definitely got smaller. Overall it was a solid meal. I don't think I'll be rushing to come back, but I'm glad I was able to experience it again.

This place is so good! I always get half regular chicken and half spicy in a sandwich! If you haven't tried it? I suggest you do!

We ordered two regular combo for dinner at home. Bravo to their new paper bag instead of plastic bag. Each combo is enough food for the two of us. Best value imho for food in the city ( NYC ).

This place got my attention just by the smell. It smelled so good we had to wait in line and I'm so glad we did. Super inexpensive and very quick. We got the chicken platter with white sauce and hot sauce. The hot sauce was spicy but it was so delicious. Every bite had such good flavor and the white sauce complimented everything so well. I'd recommend getting the hot sauce if you like spicy foods

This is a NYC staple--but on a Friday or Saturday night, the line gets insanely long. Pro tip from a New Yorker: the cart on 53rd & 7th is the exact same--same owners, same food. People skip it thinking it's not the real one, so there's usually little to no line. Even better, it's right by the Shake Shack seating area, so you can actually sit and enjoy your food. Look for the cart next to the "HOPE" statue.

The Good: Still like what it used to taste like from what I can remember. Hits the spot every time! The Bad: Adel's is a fierce competitor a few blocks down with a long line. BUT, imho Adel's doesn't really taste as good as the original Halal Guys in terms of flavor and fragrance. The chicken from Adel's is in bigger chunks and some argue is more tender, but the flavor is definitely not close. Also, it's important that it comes with lettuce, tomatoes and a little onion to balance everything out. Finally, You must get both the spicy red and white sauce together to make it all come together! The Ugly: The smell is addictive, so if you walk by, it's hard to resist, even if you've just eaten a nice meal somewhere else. We couldn't resist. Gotta hit the gym hard for the next few days!

Been on my list of places to try and best decision EVER! It was so delicious and tasty! We got the chicken and the gyro, the gyro was a little bit salty but overall really good. It comes with rice (the way they make their rice was really good and a hint of sweet), lettuce, vegetables and the sauces. They pack the food in there and the amount is great to share with 2 or more people. The price is not expensive at all. The service is great. They guys are really nice. They do get busy but the line does go by fast so you are never really waiting long. But it definitely worth the wait. It is a good truck and it's in New York so the ambiance is beautiful since you are eating outside and looking at the beautiful buildings.

This was our first stop in New York since we got in so late and needed something hot and filling! Make sure you go to the right places there are a lot of carts that'll say "Halal" on it to trip you up. This was a simple, affordable and delicious meal. We got the chicken over rice and it was LOADED. The sauce that comes with it is incredible, be sure to get it. It is cash only so be sure you've got some cash on you before heading over. The line moved quickly and service was super quick as our food was ready within a couple minutes.

Chicken and beef gyro platter. Get it with everything.

Check out the pictures and expect to see the long lines! Worth the wait and the time to try their food. Tried the beef and chicken platter that comes on a bed of rice, lettuce, tomatoes and you need both the white sauce and the hot/spicy/red sauce. Thank me later!

There are many halal guys carts and restaurants. For some reason, this particular location just tastes better! It's a must stop for us every time we visit New York City. We ate it twice on this trip! Extra hot sauces is a must!!! Love their fries too!

Colin C.

There is a reason why this place is as popular as it is. This was the first food stop I went to in NYC and I am so glad I did because this was perfect. The experience of waiting in line for a food truck in the middle of a concrete jungle is just so New York. It's a great feeling and vibe to just be part of the city's ecosystem. As for the food itself, I got the chicken gyro with one line of hot sauce and wow. This was amazing. The meat was cooked perfectly with a great seasoning and they just load it in the pita with a whole lot of sauce and toppings. Actually such a good gyro and definitely worth the wait in the line.

This cart in Theater District is the original Halal Guys and a cool visit in NYC if you are a big fan of halal food! While busy, the wait isn't too long. Huge portions and love their combo plate.

Conor B.

I really wanted my first Halal Guys experience to be from a cart vs a brick and mortar. So I'm glad that I happened to be seeing a show at a theatre just around the corner from this location. As many reviews mentioned, there will always be a line. When we went it was an off time on a weekday so it wasn't too long, but I had still had the foresight to order ahead via their website. Just as I was getting there, I could see one of the employees moving an order to their 2nd cart which is there for mobile pickups. I walked right up, gave them my name, and sure enough, that bag was mine and I was on my way. It couldn't have been easier. The food itself was perfect. Everything tasted fresh. The meat was hot, the veggies were cold and crispy, and the sauces were, well, amazing. The whole meal filled me up without having me feel stuffed. I really appreciated that because I feel like other places will give you the same amount of food but it will be so heavy that you just feel awful after eating it all. So, if you are in the theatre district and want a fresh, flavorful, and filling meal, Halal Guys is a great option.

Woooo!

Reviews are largely positive. Many enjoy the flavorful platters, generous portions, and friendly, efficient staff. The iconic NYC food cart experience is part of the appeal.

Ask the Community - The Halal Guys

Do they have a place to sit down?

Not at a food truck

Do you have to request for the hot sauce, I didn't get it in my bag?

They gave it to me automatically along with the halal sauce. I would think they give it to everyone by default. Maybe they forgot. Hopefully they're not judging thinking, "this person can't handle spice" based on looks.

Do you accept debit/credit cards?

Yes, we do accept debit/credit cards. The Halal Guys

Does the beef ha e lamb?

Hi Jose, the beef is 100% beef!

Are the times on Yelp accurate?

Yes. I do believe. You can call for more details I guess.

How much do they charge for a combo nowadays?

$7 small $9 large

Are they still open these days? Till late night?

We just ordered through Uber Eats at 10pm. Seems like they are still serving late.

Is the carts still open during this period?

Yes, October 2021 they were open.

Is this white sauce and red sauce spicy?

The white sauce is not spicy, it is what makes this dish extra good. The red sauce is super spicy, use accordingly

Can anyone tell me why there safe like three different carts of the halal guys on opposite sides of the street? Is there one that's actually the real one? Confused.

Yes , you got 3 carts , you have the main cart, then the other 2nd cart is to reduce the line on the main cart , same price, the 3rd cart is to prep and pre cook the food for the other two carts.…

Is this better than Mahmoud's Corner in Astoria on 34th & Steinway. There's is the best I've found. White sauce, hot sauce, meat..all amazing. Wondering if i should try this place?

Definitely try it! Even if you don't find it to be AS good, it's still a great price!!! Can't lose! But it is SOOOO delicious! If anything you will just have one more place to stop by for halal!

What time does the cart open? Hours of operation?

They open at 4:00 a.m. and I think close at 7:00 but am not positive on close.

Do they still have lamb? I can only see beef

They only serve beef now, no explanation why either, the cart on the same street next to the benches sells lamb and it is just as good

If you have kids, don't worry--they also have an appetizer that's similar to a mozzarella stick that was absolutely delicious. I just can't remember the name of it! They play all types of music, and even though the space is big, the personal and intimate connection with the employees is what really made the experience special. The manager, Joselyn, was incredibly warm and welcoming. Our waitress, Vivian, was on top of every single request. Bravo! This is definitely a place where you could throw a birthday party, have a professional dinner, or simply enjoy a beautiful night out with your wife. It has all the qualities of a great restaurant, and I feel like NYC is starting to lose sight of that kind of hospitality. Eating here honestly reminded me of my travels to Egypt. First of all, why do they put the hostess stand in the street and make you wait outside to be brought inside? It creates a ridiculous bottleneck. Why not hire another hostess at night to help? Also, they position themselves as a moderately priced restaurant with most entrees $40 plus. I've never been out of there for less than $200 for two (with wine). Lastly, and very importantly, every time i've been there and asked for my leftovers to take home, the server will ultimately just throw a couple of boxes and a bag on table and walk away. Here's a message to every restaurant that charges you $40 for an entree: it is the server's job to wrap up your leftovers. This is not Applebees or Chiles. If you want a 20% tip on a $200 bill, do your job!

Lesson learned: if you're going with a group, make sure you have your final number when making the reservation because adding someone later may not be possible. We started with the Mezzi Filistini, a mixed platter of babaganoush, muhammara, tabbouleh, salata, tahini and labneh. This was very good, and we tackled it with zest, devouring it with the accompanying pita bread. We also ordered the falafel, chicken shawarma platter and beef kebab platter. The chicken shawarma was decent, but I would have loved more chicken and bigger pieces. There was considerably more rice than chicken, which made the platter feel a little unbalanced. The beef kebab was better, with a good portion of meat and rice, and the accompanying vegetables weren't too bad either. One disappointment for me was the lack of a proper hot sauce. Something with a little heat and flavor would have paired really well with both the shawarma and kebab and, for me, would have elevated the meal. Overall, the food was good and the ambiance was pleasant. Service was also good for the most part, although I was disappointed that we weren't asked if we were interested in dessert before wrapping up the meal. Al Badawi is probably a place I would try again, but not one I'm in a rush to return to anytime soon.

The hours at the Flatiron location are 2-5 PM and I highly suggest arriving early. I will say it started off a little disappointing. I arrived at 2 PM and the place was packed. There were some seats at the bar but the hostess stated I could not sit unless my whole party (one other person) was present. So I waited. When my friend arrived there did not seem to be any available seating and we waited even longer. I saw other guests being seated before us and the hostess stated their party was present before mine. Finally, we were seated at the back bar (where food is prepped) after a 10 minute wait. The vibe was very cool and Mediterranean. Patrons leisurely sipping cocktails and eating Lebanese styled mini plates of eye catching delights. I was impressed with the golden silverware. It gave the place setting a very elegant touch. The ambiance was again a Mediterranean vibe with low wattage lighting, plants and basic tables and chairs. Definitely a minimalist environment that was giving Greek cafe on an island in the Aegean or Ionian Seas. Restaurant was sizeable for Manhattan and had sidewalk seating. We had several of the friendly wait staff serving us. Initially, we ordered margaritas. I must say for the $5.00 happy hour special they were very yummy. Definitely could taste they had alcohol. I expressed only a minimal amount of ice in mine as I sip slowly and do not like a watered down drink. It was perfect. I ordered a flat bread and a summer watermelon salad. My friend had the chicken shwarma and the salmon skewers. She was very happy with her order and the food looked plentiful. I really enjoyed my salad but felt the flat bread fell short of the $5.00. It was a quarter slice of a round pita with maybe a teaspoon of tomato sauce and a minute drizzle of cheese. It was mostly bread and not something I would order in the future. We did have a second round of drinks. I ordered mine again with a very tiny amount of ice. Unfortunately, it was served with an entire glass of ice. This showed that the wait staff dropped the ball on my order preference. Although I kept the drink with no complaints, be aware that staff are not as focused on customer satisfaction. I did use the bathroom while there and am grateful it was fairly clean. They did have designer hand soap which always elevates the experience. There were some spots on the tiles and floor that could use some maintenance. My experience here was a B+ and I would patronize the eatery again. I believe I would try the West Village location and compare. Definitely cannot beat the price of $5.00 Happy Hour items. I feel like it was reminiscent of the 90's.
