    Chashu Pork

The prices points for onigiri are one of the most reasonable I've seen in a while. I like the homemade feel of the onigiri versus other supermarkets where it's more pre-packaged. One is good for a snack or light meal. The chashu pork is on the lighter side, I don't really taste much which is a disappointment since I was hoping the chashu sauce and umami flavors would be tasted in the rice. I would go back to try another flavor.

I always get their spam musubi when I can. It's a takeaway shop inside of Katagiri Grocery. Other favorites include the eel onigiri and spicy tuna. They have fresh onigiri that can sell out fast. They're polite when you need to get the ones behind the glass. Spam musubi is on the counter. Just a great snack or a few make a great lunch.

This lunch made my hot and sweaty (it hit 100 degrees F today!) city kids (15 and 12) into new people who could consider walking 20 hot and sweaty additional minutes back to our hotel, so yes we will be recommending this spot to everyone we know visiting NYC (we're from Chicago). We got - spam misubi, spicy tuna, tuna mayo, eel, chicken karage, and the brown bomb (highly recommend). Thank you for a reviving, delicious meal!

I saw this place on instagram and of course, I had to try! There are soooo many rice balls to choose from, im sure you can find something you will like. I did come early, so the inventory was still stocked but im sure if you come during lunch, options will be limited I got the salmon, tuna mayo, oyster, and eel. My favorite was the oyster. There was a piece of fried oyster and it was a little spicy bc i think they put spicy mayo. The others were a little disappointing because there was very little filling. The filling to rice ratio was 10/80. I would've liked it more if it had more filling All in all, you can't really beat the price. It's hard to get food around midtown that is less than $20

We had omusubi gonbei in New Jersey before at the Japanese market. We were glad there was one a few blocks from our hotel. We stopped by for lunch to grab a few onigiris. We stopped by a few times during the entire trip. We grabbed a few different types. They have a variety of flavors. My most favorite was the onigiri with the whole boiled egg inside. They are inexpensive, delicious and quick.

Great spot to stop in for a snack especially for a long train ride! It's great that they have both their onigiri and a small grocery store so you can pick up a variety of things at the same time. I visited with my family a couple years ago and we picked up some onigiri and snacks before taking the train upstate to visit my uncle. I liked it so much that I did the same thing on a later visit by myself to stock up before taking another train trip. The karaage onigiri is probably my fave but the eel and salmon ones are good too.

Great spot within the Mitsuwa Marketplace for rice balls! They have every rice ball flavor and combination that you can think of and, more importantly, at a VERY reasonable price - about $3-$4 a rice ball! The lone exception to that price scale is the Bomb rice ball, which is as you guessed is an all-encompassing rice ball with salmon, tuna and kombu. All of their rice balls are neatly and clearly displayed in their display case and the prices of each are clearly marked. Overall, their rice balls are fantastic. They're delicious, compact and you can get a full meal without breaking the bank here.

    Inside the Katagiri Japanese Grocery

((4.5 stars)) Omusubi Gonbei is a small food counter located inside Katagiri Japanese Grocery, by the entrance. there are a variety of omusibi (also known as onigiri), which are rice balls with a filling wrapped in nori (dried seaweed sheet). neatly arranged and labelled for customers to chose from. they have white rice balls or brown rice balls. i've tried a variety of omusubi from salmon to spicy tuna to shrimp tempura over the years and they are good. there are a lot of variety to choose from. whatever the filling is, the rice is the star of each omusubi as it tastes clean, fresh, sticky soft yet firm not mushy and the rice has it's own natural flavor / sweetness that complements the filling but doesn't detract from it. really like the spam musubi,here--are layers of flavors from the rice, nori, slice of egg omelette, to the fried spam. a savory comfort food in each bite. also really like the chasu pork omusubi--a thin slice of rich savory pork combined with rice and nori. if you're in the Murray Hill / Grand Central Area...it's worth a short walk to enjoy a snack or light meal of omusubi...plus you can get other meal and snack items items within Katagiri to enjoy with your rice ball. enjoy!

My chashu onigiri was just rice...LOL

Updating my review because I got a "soft boiled egg omusubi" and to my delight, the egg was actually perfectly jammy and soft boiled! I have been wronged one too many times by chalky hard boiled eggs so this was lovely to bite into.

The selection was amazing! We got a bunch of their items and they were all a hit. My favorite was probably the spam and egg rice ball. The curry brown rice ball was also flavorful. You can get full from just 2-3 of them! I also tried some of my husband's karaage rice ball and roast pork rice ball. The staff there was nice and friendly. It is located within Katagiri Japanese Grocery so there's a lot of other food and drink options as well.

Good value takeout onigiri and musubi counter in a Japanese grocery store Everything I tried had nice rice texture (not too hard and is still soft) and some onigiris were seasoned too with sweet / savory sauce - meat was pretty good quality too tasted fresh, perfect as a yummy snack or takeout meal! I personally like when the seaweed is softer in the onigiri because it's easier to eat, which is the case here because the seaweed is already wrapped and everything is wrapped again in plastic wrap Spam musubi was solid - I like that it comes with egg too! I prefer the onigiris over musubi though, grilled eel has nice sweet glaze over it and was my fav!

Reasonably priced Onigiris for the midtown area! There are many different flavors and they range from $3-6. Service is quick. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The store is usually pretty packed during lunchtime but they try to get the lines moving quickly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

This place was inside the Katagiri Japanese market (left hand side when you enter) which has lots of food and snack options! They also had a fresh sushi bar. But back to Omusubi Gonbei - I loved their selection of onigiri and felt like I was back in Japan. I got the tuna mayo onigiri and it was very tasty. They had tons of options including cooked salmon and it was hard for me to only choose one, but we had plans to eat lunch somewhere else so this was just a snack. The onigiri was warm and the rice was soft. I think I paid about $2 for it and it was well worth the price as it was quite heavy. We also got our favorite Meiji chocolate covered almonds and matcha chocolate covered macadamia nuts from the market. Great experience!

Was told that the fish was super crispy so I got that with fried rice. Purposely asked questions in Canto to let them know I'm with the home team. Fried rice is made to order and it's actually decent. Food comes out piping hot. The fish is covered with a thick breading that reminds me of the frozen breaded tilapia from Trader Joe. It's a big serving (ended up with enough left over for a second meal) but you'll have to work thru that breading. On its own it has pretty much no flavor but it comes with a black pepper sauce that you'll need. The sauce is weirdly thick but along with the thick breading the fish will stay crispy.
