Wow some of the best pizza I've had! The line was out the door when we went on an evening during the weekday. Restaurant was absolutely packed so there wasn't really any seating. We ordered the House Slice which came with vodka sauce, pepperonis, and pesto. My partner got the Hot Honey Pepperoni Square and the pepperonis were all crisped up and delicious. I loved the vodka sauce on the slice and I think the pesto complimented the flavors very nicely. I loved the pizza here and was glad we tried it! Come I did on an early Friday evening. At this point, the line wasn't substantial (yet), and the wait altogether took around twenty minutes. My husband and I ordered a box with several slices, and while I enjoyed a few, several of them weren't the flavor profiles for me. I was initially excited for the buffalo chicken topped with green onions but found the sauce to be too sour, the cheese too funky, and the overall bite too salty. I was also excited for the Upside Down slice, but found it to be too funky and too salty as well. I had better luck with the latter two slices. I enjoyed the Angry Nona quite a bit, each bite a wonderful combination of sweet honey and salty pepperoni. Another strong contender was the bruschetta topped with cheese, fresh cherry tomatoes, and basil. The big question here is "Is it worth the wait?" While I did enjoy trying Mama's Too, I wouldn't stand in line for it again. There are plenty of delicious pizza joints in New York City, and this restaurant alone isn't craveable enough for me to brave the wait and the cramped, chaotic situation inside. Once you put up with the chaos and archaic ordering process, you'll realize it was worth it. Heard about this place for a while, and even tried to come here with family from out of town. The aggressive vibes scared them away, but we decided to give it another shot; without them. Shuffled in from the rain, to a crowded and loud midday quagmire, where the slice selection was pretty much depleted. We chose the Poached Pear & House Special (square & slice), and then moved over to the waiting area. Which is a mass of people huddled together near a curtain, (that is the entrance to the toilet), for their name to be yelled out. Out of nowhere, some big man who looked mad at the world, showed up and began tapping his hand on the steel counter. He looked more like a 7th Round Draft Pick for The Chicago Bears, than a pizza maker. Some poor nerd dropped his Vodka Slice on the floor, and Dick Butkus told him to clean it up, before he can get a replacement. When my name was finally called, I had them put it in a bag, and headed for the door. Found a bench, under an awning, and started eating what was the best pizza we've had in a long time. Their tables are always occupied, so you have to hover over one to claim it. They're known for their thick Sicilian slices, but they also have a few options of the triangle slices. Worth it! This was the last stop of the places I wanted to go to and boy was it worth it. I came mid-afternoon and it was full of people waiting for pies and slices. The line was out the door but I figured it would go somewhat quick and it did. As I kept inching closer to the register, I saw there were so many slices to choose from. I wanted to get something I knew we didn't have back home, so I went with the Cacio e Pepe slice and ordered a blood orange soda. I waited for a short while and was then on my way. This is a contender for one of my favorite pizzas ever. I only had one slice because I was pizza hopping with all the nearby pizzerias but I would go back here immediately if I could. I tried the vodka square which was made with homemade vodka sauce, whipped ricotta, and topped with basil and pecorino romano. It was heaven in a bite. The crust was the perfect thickness with a crispy, golden-brown undercarriage. I didn't get an edge piece so I only had one side that had a crust. Given how busy the place gets, that may very well be intentional. Table turnover, however, could use a bit more structure. Several customers got up and left without busing their tables. There's no clearly marked place to drop metal trays or waste, so the result was that incoming customers sometimes had to clean up after the previous ones. There was a bus-person, but she only appeared briefly while I was there. A couple of other small details caught me off guard. When I ordered the cheesesteak, I asked for a fork and was told they don't have utensils. There are also no restrooms for customers. Hand sanitizer is also unavailable , the lack of basic amenities stood out. I also didn't see any clearly visible menus when I walked in. The crowd during my visit seemed to be mostly tourists, which makes sense given the viral reputation the place has built. As a local--and therefore a potential repeat customer--I tend to notice the little conveniences that make a spot feel welcoming and easy to return to. None of this takes away from the fact that the cheesesteak is fantastic. But viral status is fleeting, and long-term success in a city like New York often comes down to repeat neighborhood customers as much as destination diners. Food for thought. Next stop on the pizza crawl, we came by Mama's Too as it was just around the corner from our first stop. I ordered the Angry Nonna and my sibling got the Poached Pear. The slices were square and quite thick. I had thought it would be quite a dense slice but to my surprise it was soft in the middle and crispy on the outside. My husband really wanted to try L'Industrie pizza, but for some reason it was chaotic that day in West Village. It's always chaotic on the weekends, according to our friends that live in NYC. Anyway, one of our friends had suggested Mama's Too, which was right around the corner. He suggested getting some things from Mama's Too, and L'Industrie, we could line up separately and meet up at Telcheo, the brewery (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Outside food allowed! Same block! Great seating!) I ordered the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich, and the Angry Nonna slice. They specialize in the square Detroit-style pizzas here, but also have traditional styles too. The Chicken Parmesan Sandwich was AMAZING! It was literally a Chicken Parmesan (breaded chicken cutlet with the tomato sauce) in a sandwich, but topped with burrata cheese and pesto. It was huge, and very filling. My Angry Nonna slice was amazing. It had hot sopressata, plum tomato sauce, with house made hot honey. Honey and spicy sausage is one of the best things ever made. The pizza dough was fluffy, chewy, and slightly crispy. It was a pretty big slice too. The line outside looked ridiculous, scary looking, and about 15 people long on the sidewalk. However, it moved very quickly. The line inside is also long, another 10 people in front of me as I entered the door. However, it really only took about 10-12 mins in line to order. Also there are two cashiers taking orders, one cashier at the counter, and another one with a hand held device. That being said, after you order, it's chaotic. There are only about 8 tables, and a bunch of people just waiting in line for their orders. You ask for to-go or dining in, but it honestly doesn't matter, because your food will be served on the same plate anyway. Yoo do not get a special take-out box if you order to-go. So I literally was holding this pizza in a cheap paper plate, and a sandwich with no top, outside in the cold. It was very frustrating. It was weird too because my food came pretty quickly, within 10 mins, and my friend's food took another 10-15 mins after me, even though she basically ordered the same thing as me, and was right behind me in line! My son in law sent me a link of a pizza review he saw of a restaurant in NYC. He noticed it because the headline of the article was 'This is officially the best pizza on the planet right now.' The first (and foremost) slice was the Vodka Square. I took my first bite and was startled - I had to remind myself this was a slice of pizza! The deep dish crust was light and crunchy - deep, but not too deep. The flavor was rich, savory and creamy - nothing like I'd ever had before. The house made vodka sauce, with whipped ricotta, sprinkled with pecorino Romano and basil was heavenly! It's a requirement if you go! Next - the 'regular' or House Pie square - Mamas's has mastered the thicker Detroit style, with the crispy edges and lighter texture in the middle. What I really like - there was no thick, heavy layer of mozzarella like you typically find on these thicker pizzas. It's a luscious cheese with a ricotta-like texture. Soft, not chewy. Lots of delicious sauce! I then tried the mushroom with ricotta and caramelized onions. It was very good! Sautéed cremini mushrooms with these sweet onions baked into the dough - it's got a rich, savory flavor. Last, but not least, I got a House Slice round (they gave me an extra slice) - which is the more mainstream thin NY style pie. It was delicious as thin pies go.....but after I had tasted those 3 thick pies, it couldn't come close to the experience I had with the Detroit style pizzas. This is a solid pizza spot in the West Village with really unique and delicious square slices. They do have triangle slices too, but they're more well known for the square ones. I tried both and think both are done very well. Be prepared to quickly eat and leave because tables are very limited and people will hover over you for a seat, which is fair. Please don't loiter in the restaurant because a lot of people are just trying to eat their slices inside, so if you don't need the table anymore, out of kindness, you'd let someone else take it. Came here on a Friday evening at like 7-8 pm and there was a short line but very fast moving. Much shorter than L'industrie. I will say however I think L'industrie is by far the superior pizza place. I used to think I really liked thicker crust like Detroit style but i think only if it's done a specific way. I really really liked the pizza from Emily but this slice from mama toos just felt not fresh. And lacked in flavoring as well. This was the second stop on our self created pizza tour. The lines were nearly as long as our first stop but, they were way less organized. The spot is small but does have seating. Unless you hoover over someone waiting for a spot to open up, plan on getting it to go. The spot was slightly different from the other pizza locations because it does have thick square crust pizza. We opted for a house slice a Cacio E Pepe and a poached pear because we were in the mood for something different. The Cacio E Pepe was the winner for our group with an amazing blend of cheeses and no shortage of it. The poached pear was a nice break from normal pizza and tasted more like a dessert option. We agreed that it was a good one to share and not something that we would get as our own slice. The person working the register taking orders was very nice and patient with the number of people moving through. As we were waiting for our slices, it got very crowded and hard to navigate but, the wait didn't seem to take too long. I've heard a LOT about this place from social media. When I got there, the line was out the door. The smell from the pizza of those eating around us made our mouth water, and their sandwiches looked enormous too. Decent amount of seating inside, but we stood outside and ate due to it being really busy when we went. Got the pear slice and the grandma slice (I believe). Grandma slice was delicious. crispy edges, thick chewy dough, and a sweet and tangy tomato sauce. 10/10. The pear slice was a little too strange for me. I appreciated their unique take, but wasn't for me and would not order again. I don't exactly remember how much each slice was, but a little on the pricier side. That + the line would deter me from coming normally, but definitely worth a try! read more

Is this my second favorite slice in NYC? Yup! If you love cacio e pepe, you will love this pizza. Perfectly cheesy and peppery! Yum. There are a few tables inside, but it gets really busy and hard to maneuver around. I will be back to try the chicken alla vodka sandwich!! read more

My goodness! What a delicious pizza! It was incredibly busy at the location we visited and now we know why. We needed up purchasing a whole pizza online for pickup because of a time crunch and not being able to wait around in the restaurant. The pizza was absolutely delightful and the employees were handling the crowd with grace. My only complaint is that you currently aren't able to order slices online. It could have been user error but I wasn't able to find any way to order individual slices for pickup. I was hoping to try other flavors but in an effort to be efficient with my time I needed to order online for pickup and was disappointed that I was only able to buy a full pizza instead of the various slices available when we got there. The most mind blowing pizza!! The 5 stars is mostly for the food, not for everything else. Pros: some of the best pizza I've ever had. They have both Detroit style and NY style... both are top tier. This is a small shop (compared to how popular it is). Things to note (cons feels too harsh): it's small and popular-- you will have to wait a while to even get inside and finding a seat is difficult because it's limited seating. I recommend getting this to go and eating outside or something but have a plan for that. The crowds were fine when we went but you can tell some people really didn't love the wait. So just again, be mindful of that. I got there maybe 30 mins before they opened on a Sunday and had food about an hour later. read more
