My friends and I walked by this place regularly and always admired the colorful outdoor decorations. We finally got to try it out and I really loved the beautiful design, elaborate lighting and nostalgic pictures inside. Even the bathrooms were tastefully decorated to match the very Indian theme. My friend who's Indian and had been there many times was in charge of ordering. These are the dishes we shared. Amritsari Chole Tikka Murgh malai tikka Mutton sukka with butter naan and garlic naan Achari chicken with basmati rice Rabdi with lychee. Everything was beautifully presented and had so much flavor. The butter naan and mutton were some of my favorites. I am not someone that can handle a lot of spice and I found the food very spicy but I had to eat it because it was so good. My friends are Asian and seemed fine with the spice level. The rabdi dessert was the perfect ending to the meal. This was so creamy and delicious. I would return just for this dessert alone. As a vegan, who was paying for the table with two non-vegans, I was pleased they had two items on the menu listed specifically as being vegan; the Thatte Idli and their Curried Chick Peas ($20 for a bowl of stewed beans). I ordered both, informed the server I am vegan, and ordered the Lacha Paratha for my bread as the server said it was the one bread they could make vegan. When the appetizers came -- I was surprised the Thatte Idli had coconut chutney -- and I asked if it was vegan. The server said, "oh no -- the chutney is not vegan, and there is ghee on it as well. I asked why it was listed vegan on the menu and they said they had changed the recipe -- but had not yet changed the menu. I said, but I also informed the server I am vegan. They apologized, left the new recipe item for the table and left us waiting to move on from appetizers until after my newly made appetizer also came out and was eaten (almost making us late for our tickets to Hadestown). When the bill came -- I was charged for two orders of the Thatte Idli -- until I said something and they removed one of them -- not removed both as they should have. For drinks I started with the chai martini cocktail which looked prettier than it tasted. The mango lassi was delicious though! For food, got the Paneer roll which was tasty and tangy, and the Bone Marrow app which was a nice presentation but honestly it was just marrow. The Pani Puri stuffed with a whipped cheese mousse were absolutely delicious and unlike anything I've had before. the Chole Tikki was also a fun take on the traditional chaat. We've been wanting to try this place for a while, and even though it was freezing outside, we braved the weather and are so glad we did. He also gave great recommendations, and I truly appreciated that he didn't mock me for not liking cilantro. So many Indian restaurants make a joke out of that, which feels demeaning especially since it's genetic, not a personal choice. It was refreshing to be treated with respect. The spice levels were perfect - balanced, bold, and not watered down or "westernized". The food felt authentic and thoughtfully prepared. The chili mango lassi was a brilliant twist on a classic, and the jackfruit tacos hit the spot. The tadka daal and paneer were both perfectly made - comforting, rich, and full of flavor. We also tried the dahi sev puri, which I found a bit dense for my liking, but my husband loved the thick yogurt and puri. We also ordered the green chili laccha paratha and the onion chili cheese kulcha - the kulcha was our favorite (we had a stare down on who got the last piece). Even the dessert was fantastic. Usually I'm too full to enjoy dessert, but this one wasn't overly sweet, and the rose and lychee flavors complemented each other so well. Solid Indian spot in the heart of union square! They have elevated Indian dishes and there's definitely something for everyone! We had a variety of dishes that ranged from spicy to not and everything was cooked to perfection! The restaurant is really spacious and the staff was very attentive to us! Made a reservation for brunch at 11:30 am day after Christmas since that was the only spot available and we could not get reservations at Bunglow. I had very high expectations from this place but was disappointed. Ordered a bunch of items : Pav Bhaji, Matar Kulcha, Chilli Cheese Toast, bombay toast sandwich, keema sandwich, etc. since they sounded very good. However, when the food came, we were very disappointed. All the food was either cold or at best lukewarm. Being the first customers for the brunch, you would expect pav bhaji to be piping hot. Chilli cheese toast was not even toasty, it was almost melted cheese put on a slice of white bread. The sandwiches came with fries but didn't come with ketchup or anything. When we asked for some, we were served chutneys and got charged for them. This is a beautiful spot with a nice layout. They have two dining rooms on the ground floor and another one on the second floor and the overall ambiance feels upscale. The food itself was very good which is why this isn't a lower rating. We started with paneer cheese rolls and dahi puri both of which were excellent. For the main course we ordered the Himalayan Morels and butter paneer masala with garlic naan and butter naan. One naan per person was actually very filling especially with the side of basmati rice. Looking at the vibrant colors of the dishes featured in my photos, you might be wary this restaurant is all show and no substance, but they would delightfully prove you wrong. Dish after dish would first surprise me with their presentation, followed by the unique ingredient pairings, followed by the flavor bombs I'd experience with each bite. GupShup is doing what few other Indian restaurants are doing in NY, and they've been at it for quite a few years at this point. I'm sure you could close your eyes and point to anything on the menu and it'd be a win, but I'd recommend starting with the onion cheese kulcha, dosa, paneer cheese rolls, and the crispy okra with guacamole. That last dish in particular was outstanding, with perfect amounts of crispiness, umami, and spice. What a way to marry North American and Asian ingredients in a way that really works. I was so full by the end of the meal I barely had room for dessert but knew they had something great up their sleeves so I gave in and tried their cardamom ice cream. It honestly could give my favorite Indian ice cream brand Malai a run for their money. To top it off they gave us a huge dining table on the 2nd floor, away from the crowds and right next to their windows, which streamed in so much natural light our food photos came out so brilliantly. We wanted to order the brunch special but were told that everyone on the table needed to order it and it would have been way too much food for us so we went à la cart. Ordered dal makhani (way too much cream and under seasoned) with missi roti ( absolutely delish), a keema toast sandwich that came with a side of salad or fries (we got salad) and a spicy green mint chutney - sandwich was very well made, and a matar kulcha - kulcha was pillowy soft and matar was slightly over salted but nonetheless well made. We were celebrating a birthday and ordered the carrot halwa à la mode with icecream and we cleaned that plate out. Not a crumb was left. The carrot icecream was a revelation. After so much anticipation and hope for a good, upscale Indian fine dining experience, GupShup left something to be desired. Don't get me wrong - the ambience is wonderful - the intimate lighting/ seating, clean interior, Indian touches to the decor and music were great! The server was also really nice and welcoming. But it fell from grace from there. The food was really subpar. We got the lamb chops, the malai chicken tikka, the cheese kulcha, and the butter chicken. While the meat was fairly tender in all of the dishes, it was all leaning very creamy and heavy. It could have benefitted from some acid or something to cut through the richness. While there was a green chutney served with many of them, it didn't do enough to balance out the food. It was also really boring that all the meat dishes just came with the same chutney. The butter chicken was also on the sweet side. There's also very few salad-type or veggie forward dishes on the menu. I would have loved something a little different. The aesthetic of the restaurant is really funky and moody with beautiful decor and a lively ambiance. The menu is modest, but offers a diverse variety of authentic Indian dishes. We ordered family style and got the paneer and pineapple tikka, curried chickpeas, amritsari chole tikka, goat dum biryani, and a hefty side of the garlic naan. While everything was super yummy my absolute FAVORITE was the amritsari chole tikka. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a taste of authentic Indian cuisine in NYC. Really solid Indian spot in Gramercy with a fun unpretentious vibe. Not new but going strong after 6 years. We arrived early to grab a cocktail at the bar. The bartender was awesome crafting really wonderful drinks. I had a tequila based cocktail and hubby had this turmeric cocktail that really stole the show. We shared nearly all the dishes. The prawn appetizer was super tasty. The pineapple and paneer special was also nice thought the grilled pieces of cheese were quite large and the ratio of cheese to pineapple and peppers seemed a bit off. The lamb chops were simply amazing. Even my husband who doesn't eat meat indulged and thought they were a real highlight. We had the mushroom dish which was heavy but really yummy. When my friend suggested it, I didn't hesitate -- and I'm glad I didn't. We opted for the outdoor setup, which actually ended up being a pleasant vibe -- bustling but comfortable. For food, we shared the Paneer Cheese Roll, Lucknowi Chicken Biryani, and of course, the Old Delhi-style Butter Chicken (with garlic naan on the side -- a must). Each dish brought its own rich, flavorful profile, and despite what looked like moderate portions, we were more than full by the end. Pro tip: don't underestimate the richness of that butter chicken! Cocktail-wise, I went with the Hot like Kohli (because who can resist that name?) while my friend had the Saffron Sunset. While beautifully presented and colorful, they didn't leave as strong of an impression as the food -- more eye candy than palate fireworks. As much people are raving about this place, this place is not worth. We went there after making a reservation and we were told that the kitchen is closing in a few minutes so we have to order right away we seated and the server to cover order everything together and guess what he brought everything within five minutes the food was cold and we told him that OK. We need items coming slowly first appetizers and then the main course but he just brought everything in once because they wanted to close the kitchen, so they brought everything together that is not something I was concerned about. It was the cold food. They were not even heating it properly. I know they were not cooking it fresh at that point they were just heating it apparently they were not heating it properly. I even had to tell the server that please get hot food. This is all like lukewarm. Anyways, this is about the cold food, but the food was not that great either the only thing that was good, which I didn't eat my friend ate was some lamb dish. This place doesn't even know how to make a Dal Makhani. Not to say much bad about this place I just would recommend not going to this place unless you invest your money. read more
