Okay this place deserves all the hype. It is actually that good. We tried a few dishes - I've been here twice so the food is over a course of 2 reservations so yes, it is a lot of food but you're welcome!! My favorites - The Dahi Sev Puri and Mutton Sukha is to die for. Butter Chicken Wings were worth it too. I've had better Butter Chicken so can maybe pass on that but get the damn Mutton Sukha. Beware, it is unapologetically spicy. It is meant to be so no modifications! Indian food is not for the weak over here! Wash all that down with some Cha and go to bed in your food coma. Go go go go go. read more

We made a reservation at GupShup after reading so many great reviews, so we came in with pretty high expectations. Reservations are definitely recommended. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The interior is really well decorated, clean, and has a nice atmosphere. Our service was also great. Our server was very attentive throughout the meal, and we felt well taken care of. We ordered quite a few things: Paan Pe Raag, Braised Nihari, Butter Chicken Wings, Laal Ishq, Naan, S. Pellegrino Sparkling Water, Sada Bahar, Paneer Cheese Rolls, Steamed Basmati Rice, Mutton Sukka, and a Limca. For us, the Butter Chicken Wings were the best dish 5/5. The Paneer Cheese Rolls were also really good 5/5. Those were definitely the two dishes that stood out the most. The Braised Nihari was around 3/5. The meat itself was good, but there were so many spices that it was hard to really taste the flavor of the meat. The Laal Ishq was also about 3/5 for us. We like flavorful food, but we felt that the amount of spices in several dishes covered up the actual flavor of the ingredients. The Mutton Sukka was okay, but again, we felt it was pretty heavy on the spices. The Naan was good, especially the garlic naan, but nothing particularly memorable. The Steamed Basmati Rice was probably 2.5/5. It was just okay, and we felt it was overpriced for what it was. The drinks were actually one of the better parts. The Sada Bahar had a really good flavor, and we enjoyed the Limca and sparkling water as well. Our biggest issue with the food was that the spices seemed to overpower the actual flavor of the food. We don't mind spice or heavily seasoned food, but we would have preferred a little more balance so we could actually taste the meat and other ingredients. Sometimes it felt like we were tasting the spices more than the dish itself. We also got so full from the food that we didn't have any room for dessert. Overall, we can see why GupShup is popular. It's a beautiful restaurant, the service is excellent, and it has a fun, upscale atmosphere. We also know it's a popular spot with celebrities, which probably adds to some of the hype. For us, though, the food just didn't live up to all the positive reviews we had read. Nothing was terrible, and there were definitely a couple of dishes we really enjoyed, but overall we expected more from the food. Beautiful restaurant, great service, good drinks, but the food was just okay for us. read more

As a vegan, who was paying for the table with two non-vegans, I was pleased they had two items on the menu listed specifically as being vegan; the Thatte Idli and their Curried Chick Peas ($20 for a bowl of stewed beans). I ordered both, informed the server I am vegan, and ordered the Lacha Paratha for my bread as the server said it was the one bread they could make vegan. When the appetizers came -- I was surprised the Thatte Idli had coconut chutney -- and I asked if it was vegan. The server said, "oh no -- the chutney is not vegan, and there is ghee on it as well. I asked why it was listed vegan on the menu and they said they had changed the recipe -- but had not yet changed the menu. I said, but I also informed the server I am vegan. They apologized, left the new recipe item for the table and left us waiting to move on from appetizers until after my newly made appetizer also came out and was eaten (almost making us late for our tickets to Hadestown). When the bill came -- I was charged for two orders of the Thatte Idli -- until I said something and they removed one of them -- not removed both as they should have. DO NOT CHANGE THE RECIPE OF SOMETHING LISTED ON YOUR MENU AS FULFILLING RESTRICTIVE DIETARY NEEDS, IF IT NO LONGER MEETS THOSE NEEDS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! read more

My friends and I walked by this place regularly and always admired the colorful outdoor decorations. We finally got to try it out and I really loved the beautiful design, elaborate lighting and nostalgic pictures inside. Even the bathrooms were tastefully decorated to match the very Indian theme. My friend who's Indian and had been there many times was in charge of ordering. These are the dishes we shared. Amritsari Chole Tikka Murgh malai tikka Mutton sukka with butter naan and garlic naan Achari chicken with basmati rice Rabdi with lychee. Everything was beautifully presented and had so much flavor. The butter naan and mutton were some of my favorites. I am not someone that can handle a lot of spice and I found the food very spicy but I had to eat it because it was so good. My friends are Asian and seemed fine with the spice level. The rabdi dessert was the perfect ending to the meal. This was so creamy and delicious. I would return just for this dessert alone. The only shortcoming were the drinks. They looked very cool but the flavors were just not good. The delicious food and ambiance made up for the drinks. This place is expensive so I would come for a special occasion and be prepared to pay accordingly. read more

Dinner with friends visiting from the West Coast who being Indians wanted only this cuisine. We snagged a reservation easily. We began our meal with Crispy Okra and Guacamole and Amritsar Chole Tikki. Both were good although Shobha wished that the guacamole could have been more spicy. Our main courses were not so tasty as the Old Delhi Butter Chicken was a regular curry and the paneer saag that one could easily have made at home. Butter and garlic naans were tasty and we ordered seconds. Shobha and I shared the Kulfi Falooda for dessert. Service was fine and leftovers were pack read more

I think this place is good, but slightlyy overhyped in my opinion. The prices are definitely on the higher side, and the food, while tasty, wasn't super memorable. For drinks I started with the chai martini cocktail which looked prettier than it tasted. The mango lassi was delicious though! For food, got the Paneer roll which was tasty and tangy, and the Bone Marrow app which was a nice presentation but honestly it was just marrow. For mains we got the Butter Chicken, peas rice, and butter naan. All were very tasty, but nothing was super memorable. We finished with the lychee dessert which very good but very sweet. Service was good and the restaurant is pretty, but not a standout for me. read more

I heard about this restaurant from a TikTok video and I do feel as though I fell into the hype. It definitely overhyped the restaurant for me and I came in with high expectations. While the food (chicken briyiani, daal, saag paneer( was delicious, it wasn't worth the price point that it came at. Will I come back if friends ask? Yes. Will I come on my own will? Probably not. This was not exceptional but it was delicious. read more

I mean wow. Fantastic food. Super flavor. Spicy but doesn't melt your face off. Cute inside. Great vibe. We were some of the only non-Indian customers there which is usually a good sign. Waiter was great. Everything amazing. Only bummer was that the bill wasn't texted to me like I asked the device to send. Could have been user error, but annoying. read more

Delicious and very creative Indian cuisine! I really loved some of their unique spins on classic dishes. The Pani Puri stuffed with a whipped cheese mousse were absolutely delicious and unlike anything I've had before. the Chole Tikki was also a fun take on the traditional chaat. I would've loved to try more of the appetizers, but we had to get entrees too. The Saag Paneer was perfect, and the Butter Paneer Masala was also nice but not my favorite item of the evening. Now, that Chili Cheese Kulcha....incredible and a must order! To wash it all down, I had the Laal Ishq, which was decent but a bit too sour for my liking. The drinks here are nice and strong, which is a plus. read more

We finally made it to Gupshup for my husband's birthday weekend and it absolutely did not disappoint. We've been wanting to try this place for a while, and even though it was freezing outside, we braved the weather and are so glad we did. The service was outstanding, and our server's sense of humor made the night even more enjoyable. He also gave great recommendations, and I truly appreciated that he didn't mock me for not liking cilantro. So many Indian restaurants make a joke out of that, which feels demeaning especially since it's genetic, not a personal choice. It was refreshing to be treated with respect. The spice levels were perfect - balanced, bold, and not watered down or "westernized". The food felt authentic and thoughtfully prepared. The chili mango lassi was a brilliant twist on a classic, and the jackfruit tacos hit the spot. The tadka daal and paneer were both perfectly made - comforting, rich, and full of flavor. We also tried the dahi sev puri, which I found a bit dense for my liking, but my husband loved the thick yogurt and puri. We also ordered the green chili laccha paratha and the onion chili cheese kulcha - the kulcha was our favorite (we had a stare down on who got the last piece). Even the dessert was fantastic. Usually I'm too full to enjoy dessert, but this one wasn't overly sweet, and the rose and lychee flavors complemented each other so well. Overall, Gupshup is everything we hoped it would be - delicious, authentic, and fun. We'll definitely be back! Might even have to order carry out from there tonight to warm us up from this -12 degrees! read more

Solid Indian spot in the heart of union square! They have elevated Indian dishes and there's definitely something for everyone! We had a variety of dishes that ranged from spicy to not and everything was cooked to perfection! The restaurant is really spacious and the staff was very attentive to us! That came around and gave the proper warnings when our dishes were hot and everything was coursed out well! The interior was fun and not too dark and definitely was not too noisy either! But some of the tables were a little close getting out of the restaurant was a little challenging. But I also really liked that the chef came around and asked us how our meal was which I thought was a nice touch! Definitely would go back to try other items on their menu! read more

Made a reservation for brunch at 11:30 am day after Christmas since that was the only spot available and we could not get reservations at Bunglow. I had very high expectations from this place but was disappointed. Ordered a bunch of items : Pav Bhaji, Matar Kulcha, Chilli Cheese Toast, bombay toast sandwich, keema sandwich, etc. since they sounded very good. However, when the food came, we were very disappointed. All the food was either cold or at best lukewarm. Being the first customers for the brunch, you would expect pav bhaji to be piping hot. Chilli cheese toast was not even toasty, it was almost melted cheese put on a slice of white bread. The sandwiches came with fries but didn't come with ketchup or anything. When we asked for some, we were served chutneys and got charged for them. Maybe I am spoiled for Indian food since I have been living in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 20 years and the Indian food there is simply awesome. This place would not survive even a year in the highly competitive market in San Francisco. read more

Four days deep into NYC business meetings and conferences. The fancy steakhouses? Amazing. The craft cocktails? Divine. The Japanese food? Chef's kiss. After all that culinary sophistication, my Indian taste buds were staging a full-blown rebellion. I needed some masala and spice!! Time to answer the call. Enter GupShup. I'd heard the buzz but never made it until now, and they lived up to the hype. The interiors are beautifully done with a vibe that gets you in the mood before the food even arrives. Speaking of which - the food comes out fast, which is dangerous when you're this hungry. The Dum Biryani is presented like a magic trick, sealed under its traditional dough covering. Unwrapping it and devour whats inside. As a Punjabi, I am very particular about my Daal Makhani. Like, unreasonably critical. This one? 10/10. No notes. Chef hit it out of the park. We also ordered the sizzler platter, which buried the three of us under an avalanche of meat. Just make sure you enjoy all of this with those flaky lachha parathas? Come hungry. Leave with a food coma and zero regrets. read more

I have been wanting to come to a Vikas Khanna restaurant in forever and here I am finally! The decor, fab! The ambience, fab! The music was top notch! The host - not so fab. Can we welcome guests with a smile? The lack of engagement and welcoming energy from the staff in general was a turnoff. Probably because they get guests regardless!! Cocktail menu looked so fun with all sorts of fun names. I ordered Bombay Peacock Society and wow! It was amazing! The flavors were punchy, refreshing and the black cardamom worked so well together! Food: we ordered paneer rolls, chana Tikki and chicken tikka and they were all amazing! My fav was chicken tikka. For mains we ordered, butter chicken, paneer butter masala and achari chicken and hands down the best achari chicken and butter chicken I have had in New York so far. It was so lovely that the chef came outside to walk us through our orders and shared that the achari chicken is his mom's recipe. It was mind blowing. Definitely recommend it. read more

This is a beautiful spot with a nice layout. They have two dining rooms on the ground floor and another one on the second floor and the overall ambiance feels upscale. The food itself was very good which is why this isn't a lower rating. We started with paneer cheese rolls and dahi puri both of which were excellent. For the main course we ordered the Himalayan Morels and butter paneer masala with garlic naan and butter naan. One naan per person was actually very filling especially with the side of basmati rice. For drinks we tried the Ammi Jaan made with seedlip grove, curry reduction, lime juice, and guava purée, along with a mango chili lassi. Dessert was carrot halwa which was very good and a nice way to end to our meal. For a place at this price point the service really didn't match the experience. Our server, Santiago was not attentive at all. He barely checked in didn't ask even ask if we needed water and overall felt absent. Better than him was this other server whom actually checked in one us atleast once. Most of the servers seemed focused on one large table of about ten people but service quality should be consistent for all guests. Overall the food and ambiance were great but the service needs serious improvement for the price they're charging. read more

GupShup is a must-try, and the ambiance is so beautiful to not check out at least once on both floors of the place, but I would recommend saving your dollars and only trying during their lunch hours as this restaurant is just so pricey!! I would definitely order a cocktail as I found them to be the standout - unique with bold, eastern flavors and very strong. The menu, while also unique, did not completely deliver when certain classic dishes have either a cult following or familial memory tied to it. Overall, a great vibe, but there is stiff competition in NYC! read more

Looking at the vibrant colors of the dishes featured in my photos, you might be wary this restaurant is all show and no substance, but they would delightfully prove you wrong. Dish after dish would first surprise me with their presentation, followed by the unique ingredient pairings, followed by the flavor bombs I'd experience with each bite. GupShup is doing what few other Indian restaurants are doing in NY, and they've been at it for quite a few years at this point. I'm sure you could close your eyes and point to anything on the menu and it'd be a win, but I'd recommend starting with the onion cheese kulcha, dosa, paneer cheese rolls, and the crispy okra with guacamole. That last dish in particular was outstanding, with perfect amounts of crispiness, umami, and spice. What a way to marry North American and Asian ingredients in a way that really works. I was so full by the end of the meal I barely had room for dessert but knew they had something great up their sleeves so I gave in and tried their cardamom ice cream. It honestly could give my favorite Indian ice cream brand Malai a run for their money. To top it off they gave us a huge dining table on the 2nd floor, away from the crowds and right next to their windows, which streamed in so much natural light our food photos came out so brilliantly. It took me years to finally have a full meal here, and I'm kicking myself for waiting this long. I've been to many new Indian restaurants from celebrated chefs since visiting GupShup and I'd say my meal here is still the most memorable. read more

Pretty good food, solid menu selection, large plates are ~1.5-2x servings, creative South Asian cocktails, mediocre service. GupShup offers a modern ambiance with a creatively South Asian cocktail menu featuring cocktails that go down easy. The paneer cheese rolls were SO GOOD, 3 to 4 stars. Overpriced if you don't account for the large plates being ~1.5-2x servings. The naan was good: fresh, crisp, and fluffy. We ordered more than the suggested 1/person and found it slightly excessive, but those with bigger appetites may appreciate the extra. The onion cheese kulcha made for a great late-night snack. Curt service. For party of 2: sharing one large plate + an appetizer (overpriced) is probably best. For larger parties, still get small number of large plates. Order: (for 4: loooots of leftovers - Paneer cheese rolls (DELICIOUS) - tandoori gobi (eh, difficult but they did ok) - dhaal makhani (solid) - achari chicken (decent) - rice - falooda ice cream (pretty good, crazy combination of flavors) read more

Loved our Brunch at GupShu! It was such a fun, vibrant spot with bold flavors, great presentation, and a seriously creative bar menu. We ordered a mix of small plates and everything was delicious. The Thatte Idli was a standout. It was soft, fluffy, and served with sambhar plus spicy tomato and coconut chutneys. The Dahi Sev Puri was perfectly tangy and refreshing with that yogurt mousse and tamarind. The Chicken Tikka (served dry with mint chutney and chili onions) was super flavorful, and the Keema Pav was rich and comforting. The drinks were another highlight. We tried: * Khatti Imli -- tamarind, ume, and citrus with Tanduay Asian Gold rum; bright, tart, and so refreshing. * Masala Chai Martini -- Old Monk rum, cutting chai, cardamom, and honey; warm, cozy, and dessert-like in the best way. * Jadi Buti Wala Baba -- mezcal, pineapple, cucumber, lime, tomatillo shrub, and mint; herbal, smoky, and super unique. We also got a Mango Lassi, which was creamy, sweet, and the perfect cool contrast to all the bold flavors. Amazing vibe, great food, and one of the most interesting cocktail menus I've seen in a while. Would absolutely come back! read more

We wanted to go to Bungalow but missed the reservation window so Resy recommended Gupshup by the same group. We wanted to order the brunch special but were told that everyone on the table needed to order it and it would have been way too much food for us so we went à la cart. Ordered dal makhani (way too much cream and under seasoned) with missi roti ( absolutely delish), a keema toast sandwich that came with a side of salad or fries (we got salad) and a spicy green mint chutney - sandwich was very well made, and a matar kulcha - kulcha was pillowy soft and matar was slightly over salted but nonetheless well made. We were celebrating a birthday and ordered the carrot halwa à la mode with icecream and we cleaned that plate out. Not a crumb was left. The carrot icecream was a revelation. Service was efficient - just one person managing the place - it was busy but it was not lacking in anyway. Oh yes, they didn't charge for sparkling water and brought the dessert with a candle and didn't charge for it either. Would come here again and try other dishes if we are in the area. read more

My sisters and I took a trip to NY and made reservations here, this place is a must visit when you are there! I went in with an open mind and no expectations as I am Indian and always skeptical about Indian food at restaurants! LOL However, the food here was DELICIOUS!!! Every plate that we ordered we loved! The Old Delhi Butter Chicken and the Goat Dum Biryani were the highlights! The butter chicken had the perfect spice and I was truly impressed. As for Goat, I am ALWAYS hesitant to order Goat or lamb at restaurants because I hate when it isn't cooked right and tastes Gamey (My mom also makes the best Goat, so my taste buds have been spoiled) BUT oh my goodness I am so glad we took a chance and ordered it because it's one of the best Goat Biryani's I've had at a restaurant, you have to order this!! read more

After so much anticipation and hope for a good, upscale Indian fine dining experience, GupShup left something to be desired. Don't get me wrong - the ambience is wonderful - the intimate lighting/ seating, clean interior, Indian touches to the decor and music were great! The server was also really nice and welcoming. But it fell from grace from there. The food was really subpar. We got the lamb chops, the malai chicken tikka, the cheese kulcha, and the butter chicken. While the meat was fairly tender in all of the dishes, it was all leaning very creamy and heavy. It could have benefitted from some acid or something to cut through the richness. While there was a green chutney served with many of them, it didn't do enough to balance out the food. It was also really boring that all the meat dishes just came with the same chutney. The butter chicken was also on the sweet side. There's also very few salad-type or veggie forward dishes on the menu. I would have loved something a little different. It seems overall, the restaurant isn't catered to Desi taste buds. Such a disappointment given how many amazing things I've heard about Chef Khanna. read more

But at $18, I think it was a little pricey for what it's worth. - Keema Pav: pretty good, but not a stand out to me - Lamb Chops Pulao: this dish was lamb chops in a curry with rice. The meat was so tender and paired well with the curry. Overall very solid. - Butter Chicken: this was the star of the show!! Terrible customer service. Food is fine but there are plenty of great Indian restaurants in New York where they treat customers with respect. We ordered family style and got the paneer and pineapple tikka, curried chickpeas, amritsari chole tikka, goat dum biryani, and a hefty side of the garlic naan. While everything was super yummy my absolute FAVORITE was the amritsari chole tikka. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a taste of authentic Indian cuisine in NYC.
