Attaboy has my heart and soul, especially after crafting, curating and creating my dream drink that will live forever in the memory of my taste buds unable to be erased from my brain's footprints. Our friends raved about this place and we of course were excited (and a bit skeptical at first) to try it. The concept: no menu + no lights + a few questions = the ultimate cocktail experience. The speakeasy vibe and the dark ambiance really makes this place feel even more exclusive. With just a few tables and the bar setting, you're in for an experience you won't forget (unless you answer the wrong questions and really end up with a drink you don't like HA). This wasn't my case. Of course I described my two favorite things: Negroni + mezcal. The obvious answer would be a mezcal Negroni, but that's not why one comes to a place like Attaboy. Our amazing curator came by to ask us all a few questions, write down a few words in the napkins, and mix up the perfect drink that our master bartender crafts, curates and creates. My drink came as I couldn't possibly imagine. It looked like a Negroni smelled like Oaxaca, with all the smoke simmering up and preparing my sensory experience, leading to the best first sip. Ladies and gentleman, I introduce you to The Devil's Backbone. A perfectly balanced drink I'll never forget, one that is sipped slowly and enjoyed thoroughly. It's sexy, it's smoky it's sipped. This is one of the must-try bars in NY. You describe the flavor profile of the drink you want and the bartender whips up something for you. I only said I wanted something "floral" and I got the best water lily drink curated for me - never had anything like it. Others in my group asked for "something spicy", "something smoky, nutty, and creamy" and something "refreshing". We were all extremely impressed. Our bartender was Steven and he was awesome! He even chatted with us for a bit after to tell us more about attaboy. I'm rounding up to 5 stars but I will say our experience with the "bouncer" was a bit unpleasant. He called us to let us know our table was ready but we missed the call (our fault). We returned the call immediately and got there within a couple minutes anyway. We were ready to patiently wait for the next availability but were met with some attitude and unnecessary comments from him during the waiting experience. Getting into Attaboy on a Friday will be one of my crowning 2025 achievements. That said it was a chillier evening which may have played a little into our luck. I arrived around 8:30p, put my name on a list for 2 and we were in by 9:15p. They run a smooth operation, with the host taking down names and another individual making sure seats are filled. The bar is cozy with not too many seats. We went up to the bar and were given the rundown - no menu, and you discuss what type of drink profile you were looking into. It took about 15-20 minutes. And I'm super picky with cocktails-- for the longest time, the only 2 cocktail bars that truly wowed me were Lyaness (London) and Silver Lyan (Washington DC). Was recommended this speakeasy bar while I was in town for work, so decided to give it a try. I was so confused on if I arrived at the location as the entrance isn't well marked. My bf and I got there early enough that there wasn't a line, but also didn't realize we needed to wait outside for someone to bring us in. After waiting about 5 min someone happily let us in and sat us at a booth. The inside is dark and moody but beautifully done. The bartender came right over to ask our drinks and made them quickly. Note, they don't have a drink menu. You tell them what liquor you want and they create a craft cocktail to your liking. My martini was fantastic and my bf's spicy marg was made with such craftsmanship you can tell their bartenders love what they do. We stayed for another round and weren't sure what to order. This location is much smaller, and I really only saw bar seats available (maybe ten or less). I showed up solo on a Tuesday night and had to stand. I ordered the same drink I had in Nashville (the troublemaker) which is a refreshing take on a Pimms Cup. The drinks here are $5 more than the drinks in Nashville but that's to be expected. Staff were friendly. The vibe here is chill. Would def go back but probably not on a busy weekend due to the limited seating. No food is served here. Space is pretty narrow and I don't think it would be considered ADA accessible. Didn't use the restroom so can't comment on it. read more

(Overall: F) - I was so eager to try this top bar in the world, but it quickly turned into immeasurable disappointment as everything and more fell short. The premise of this bespoke bar is that there is no menu and you can describe your preferences not limited to flavor, texture, and aesthetics, and the bartender would come up with something special. Unlike the positive experiences I've had at bespoke bars in Asia, I felt like this was just an absolute disaster. I ordered a drink that was fruity and floral, but received something that was acidic and medicinal. Honestly, by the time i was handed the drink, I was already underwhelmed as the drink looked bad, but tasted even worse. Now, one bad drink may be an outlier, but my friend described a fruit-forward drink and felt so sour after hers, both figuratively and literally. What added further salt into the wound is it was clear that the bartenders knew we were unhappy with our drinks, and then proceeded to chat with other guests instead; not that we wanted to bring this up since I am quite confident they could not do better that night. The bar itself does not have many seats, and the standing room only portions is actually quite in the way of the staff members, which is an inconvenience to everyone involved. People line up for this place a solid 30 minutes before it even opens, and if you're a smaller group, then you may be doomed very early on. What I didn't like though is that if there are multiple groups of two, the receptionist can actually those groups if they'd like to share a table instead of skipping them completely and going to a group that is behind them in line. From this experience, I don't see the appeal of this establishment and would not personally recommend to anyone, there's just no reason to wait in line for such disappointment. Attaboy, on the Lower East Side, is one of the best cocktail experiences I have had in a long time. Our recent trip to New York was chock full of fantastic bars, but Attaboy was my favorite. I know it sounds pretty geeky, but it is truly hallowed ground in the world of cocktails. Attaboy opened 22 years ago replacing the original Milk & Honey, the ground-breaking speakeasy from cocktail pioneer Sasha Petraske. Milk and Honey won best cocktail bar in the world in 2008 and Attaboy won best bar in North America in 2022. Two of Petrakse's proteges. Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy reopened the 500 sq. ft. space as Attaboy and created some of the modern era's defining cocktails. Ross created the Penicillin and Paper Plane and McIlroy the Greenpoint, an iconic Manhattan riff. Don't look for them on the menu because there isn't one. The model is designed around the experience. There are no menus because each cocktail is custom made by skilled and friendly bartenders. They ask a few questions to determine what you enjoy and the wizardry starts there. I've been to many no-menu bars, but this was by far the best execution I've had because both of my cocktails were exceptional based on what I asked for. It's not easy to find. Look for a simple steel door with small sticker letters announcing the legendary bar. It is a welcoming environment from the moment the locked door opens and you are greeted for an open seat. Given the small space, great care is given by the host to each of the 22 seats. There are no reservations so there is usually a wait. It's worth it. My first cocktail was a Manhattan variation. I asked for a fun spin on this classic and they nailed it (photo #2) Rye Apple Brandy Amaro Nonino Peychauds bitters My second absolutely blew me away (photo #5). I asked for a scotch based cocktail with banana and a fun Amaro. The talent of these bartenders is amazing as it's easy to see why it's become one of the top bars in the world. How could they go wrong when each drink is curated specifically for each person? I love whiskey and have been really into Jalapeño margaritas, so I loved how the bartender cleverly added cayenne pepper for that kick in my whiskey cocktail --amazing! We ended up spending over $200 for 6 cocktails with two specialty ones from the top shelf, so those were $35 each. For the experience, it's worth it to try bottles you may not often find. And in the back of my mind, I knew a bees knees would be great. But, the twist was he added some fernet and shook with a grapefruit twist. Small details to elevate an already great drink. Long wait but well worth the experience. I would recommend coming here early to put your name in, go off to have drinks and dinner in the area, and then return when your table is ready. A group of 4 is most ideal so you can get a table but not be too squished. Periodically checking your spot in the queue also helps, our wait got reduced from 4h to 2h due to a no show table. There is no menu so you just let the bartender know what you like and don't like. They are extremely friendly and accommodating. I don't drink alcohol due to lacking the enzyme to digest it but still had the best mocktails of my life here. My flavor profiles were piña colada and cream.
