Nice and a cozy bar. Caught this place while bar hopping on St. Patrick's. It's a pretty decent space with 8 to 12 tables and a bar. As usual crowded on St Patrick's but we had a reservation to avoid the huge wait. Ordered some beers and an Irish Coffee (contains Whiskey) for the table. A great dive bar in the WV area. It's cozy And comfortable and offers multiple seating options. Great for both groups and smaller parties. Random thing to note, I love how many bag/coat hooks they had scattered throughout the bar. It's the little things that really make a difference. I'm a truly simple human. I love good company, a chill vibe and a well poured drink. There has never been a more beautifully, delicious poured glass of beer in my life, than the three pints I had of Guinness at the Four-Faced Liar. My friend and I visiting NY for a week, met up with some friends from upstate and as we were going about our touristy ways, we ended our night meeting up with them at this bar in the West Village and wow... for a bit early in the night it was super chill and laid back. As my friend began to tell the story of her dad coming to this bar and how its names after a clock tower, I felt like time shifted and I was transported to some local pub in Ireland. It was dark, honestly a little dusty and the tables just big enough to fit the amount of drinks for the four us and I loved every minute of it. A fantastic pub out in the West Village, with a taco spot right across the street. Definitely recommend pregaming before some tacos, then back again for more drinks. Also I love Guinness now. As it was cold out and we didn't want to go inside during covid, my girlfriend asked if the heater could be turned on. Waiter's reply: you can do it yourself. Okay, fine. Weird but fine. Here's what happened next: Waiter: what do you want? Me: what do you have on draft? Waiter: what are you looking for? Girlfriend: ... alcohol... Pretty concrete bar with a nice interior. I've been twice now and both times have sat at the bar and had very different experiences. The first time was post-drinks after a comedy show at the nearby Zinc Bar, then the Four-Face Liar was calm felt quite easygoing. The second time was a bit of a different ballgame. It was pretty packed and everyone just seemed aggressive. Is that a weird thing to call the energy of people in a bar. Not the aggression that gets you into fights or anything, but a lot of struggling for space and putting across that your needs come before anything else. Safe to say, there were a lot of armpits in my face with people trying to flag down a bartender. The bathrooms are also quite strange, the way the wall is right by them it's hard to form a line or see if someone else was waiting. The bar itself is located in a weird location- not *really* but it works in their favor. No outdoor seating, but they have big windows by the front (great for people-watching). The booths and chairs have seen better days, but it's the West Village so that's par for the course. I have no problem with Four-Faced Liar. I'm just not passionate about it. It's a typical dive bar that offers wells, drafts, and a lot of seating. The crowd tends to be more on the older side -- which can be useful if you're escaping the W4 area. It lays in between the chaos of W4 and the chaos of the West Village. Often times you'll find mellowed out party people in this oasis. It's great for conversation though. We usually use it as a meeting bar. I have seven words to share with you about The Fourfaced Liar: mysteriously packed despite overwhelming stench of puke. I keep trying to go to this bar because I enjoy both lying and drinking, but it turns out that I can never make it more than a foot past the doorway because I also enjoy smelling things other than regurgitated Guinness. I cannot figure out why there are always a billion people inside, and three or four more fairly decently dressed fools standing outside dangling cigarettes from their pleased lips on the sidewalk nearby. What gives? During the warmer months they set up tables outside, and they have some pretty decent drink specials, but if you try to go there during the winter I suggest toting an avant-garde-fashionable gas mask to keep out the aggresively wafting stench. read more

For the west village the prices of beer and wine is more than reasonable and they have a little TV to watch the Yankees or whomever else is on. The crowd def. skews to the local post-work crowd during the week and is a hodge-podge on the weekends, but doesn't come anywhere near the riff-raffy feel of macdougal street. I have to give this bar 5 stars based solely on the fact that they have arguably the best buck Hunter setup in the city. I am currently trying to qualify for the buck Hunter world championship (I'm not kidding) so having a great buckhunter set up is huge for me. They also let you bring your own food in which is nice since I don't know a single person who doesn't want to grab some food after knocking a couple back This is a small, dark, LOUD bar with minimal seating. Its especially loud when the live music is going. They also have a weekely poetry reading. So back to buck Hunter. Buck Hunter is an amazing game often found in bars with the equipment destroyed, the price jacked up, or in an area not particularly conducive to actually playing the game. A friend and I came here for a quiet drink since we wanted to talk and catch up. We were both a bit surprised that most of the clientele was straight when almost every bar in a few blocks is mostly gay. Not problem at all, though! Just an observation. The bartender was super quick to serve us and there was an open table right away. The noise level was low enough that we could chat and enjoy our drinks without having to yell.
