If we're being honest, and we always are in reviews, I've spent a lot of time over the last [redacted] years in bars. And for over a decade I've been stumbling home to my now wife, and ONLY after a long, long night in Barrow's has she ever told me that I smell weird. There were five of us there, and two other people reportedly smelled funky after the evening (according to our womenfolk). I asked the one who went home alone, and he couldn't tell because no one was there to tell him, but he offered, "Maybe it was because you guys shit your pants." Editor's Note: We did not shit our pants. In any case, other than the unidentified but unpleasant odor that we may or may not have acquired at Barrow's, it's a good bar. There's a pool table (two dollars in quarters per game), a juke box, a decently clean bathroom, strong but expensive call liquor drinks that forced us to switch to more affordable beer/shot combos (my undoing), friendly bartenders, popcorn (I think, it wasn't free), and a surprising number of carpenters who were not good at pool. I know this because I was playing very poorly, and we kept winning. If you're looking for a place to drink and catch up and play a little pool, you could do a lot worse. read more

We ended up at Barrow's Pub where they were already hanging out. Didn't stay for long, but was handed a shot of tequila while here. Vibe was dive bar. Since it was Friday night, it was fairly crowded with loud music, etc. I didn't feel like a sardine, so it wasn't unbearably crowded. I vaguely remember seeing a pool table? So on slower nights might be fun to throw back some drinks and play a round or so of pool. Fun first stop on what ended up being a bar crawl of sorts. read more

Great, unpretentious, fun bar with very varied crowd. Extremely tolerant of any and everyone. Never ever seen anyone judged or discriminated against in the more than 20 years I've been coming here. The mix of people from union hall, locals, rich wv's waiting for nearby reservations, those taking a break from Henrietta's and the occasional star makes it a wonderful melting pot. Great jukebox and well maintained pool billiards table with white chalk. You may bring in food. A few outdoor tables can be a peaceful respite. Six beers on tap and many, many bottle choices. Love is not a strong enough word for me to describe this old school treasure. read more

Came here for pride weekend. The bar we originally wanted to go to had a line around the corner so we tried this place out. It was $5 to get in. The drinks were a reasonable price and the music was good. The place is small but it's really who you go with is what matters, my Friends and I had a great time. The only complaint I have is that we paid for certain songs to play, and even paid extra to have them "play next" and we were there all night and they never played. I don't think the machine is the music they're even playing but whatevs, still a good time. read more

Not expensive at all (there were 4 dollar Heiny lights, maybe it was just a special of the night, there may have been a party for a theater troupe there as well) makes for a great first part of the night. I apologize to the woman who i just walked up to and ate some of her popcorn but her friend next to her was so filthy gorgeous and sent me coy signals to the point where I just snuggled up against myself by the jukebox and giggled like an idiot. I was smitten. Anywho, besides the digi jukebox (which stink in a sense because some only take mostly singles from the albums they display which was the case here) and a few tvs, ample space for such a small pub, and a solid mix of people, this place actually isn't very interesting. But I had a good time, and i feel its better than whitehorse tavern up the way, it has less suits and overbearing yuppies. Its a great little hard drinkin, slightly heavier music find. read more

There is nothing particular about this bar that makes it a great bar. But whenever I come through the door my mood immediately improves. It's comfortable without any definable style, friendly but you can drink in peace, you can introvert or interact, the bar tender is always good enough but not too much. Went to this bar over pride weekend and the atmosphere is real fun. We originally had paid a $20 cover charge to get into Henrietta's across the street so we wanted to hop somewhere a little less crowded (even though it still was). For a $5 cover charge- the music was definitely all good vibes, very cool music and stuff you can all dance to with changes of genres so it doesn't get boring, the bouncers are real cool with everyone and the bartenders are nice and attend to you timely. This is a great sports bar and up until 10pm has lots of available seating. Wait staff was very attentive. Do NOT order the desserts. The cheesecake was actually gross and tasted like chalky sadness. If you don't like it here, you suck. Yeah, it's a dive bar, but it's one of the best there is. Pool, touchscreen video games, jukebox, pizza/popcorn (for a price) and GREAT drinks at even better prices. The bartenders completely rock (i.e. Natalie & Michelle), which is why they've kept so many regulars. Thinking about Barrow's Pub still leaves me a little uneasy, but only for the inordinate number of men in fleece and or non-hipster plaid in the bar on a Saturday night. Peering into the well-lit, clean bar (this is *not* a dive bar), I figured that perhaps this was the watering-hole in the city where Seattle and Portland ex-pats hung out (HIMYM tells me these exist). But I guess not. Other than that, cheap-for-the-city beer ($6 Newcastle, $5 Miller Lights), a pool table, neighborhood puppies, and plenty of seats makes this a fun place for a group to kick back. read more

Top notch simple little place. This is a low key, not fancy in the least, local bar...bring your dog if you like. Selection of beers isn't huge but there's plenty such that anyone should be able to find something they like. This is a place those of us in the neighbourhood go to chill but everyone is welcome. Let me start off my saying: I like dive bars. Read my other reviews, I really do. So this two-star review isn't because the place is a dive, it's because it wasn't even great for being a dive. Beers weren't cheap and the glasses were dirty (not just not-sparkly, like crusted). I worked around the corner for a 3 month stint and this became my neighborhood bar. If you're looking for an alternative to the ritzy places in the area, and you have a big group to fit somewhere -- this is the place.Missy and Shawn are the best bartenders, very personable. Missy got to know me by name because of my frequenting and is a really sweet woman. They also serve pizza here, which is not bad at all. The crowd can be kind of annoying on Friday and Saturday nights, but every other day of the week (and trust me, I brought people there every single night as I had to bring them somewhere!) is very mellow. Nothing fancy, has a pool table, and a couple of beers on tap. They have specials on some of the cheap stuff and the service is usually quick. We always allow time to grab a drink at Barrows before. Service is great-and we love seeing the regulars there every time we go. My husband, friend, and I stopped in here to drink while we were waiting for our table across the street at Takashi. It's a chill bar, and kind of reminds me of the types you see on TV or in movies. Honestly, for the prices, it's a pretty good place to pre-game. It's a pretty typical local bar with a pool table, loud music, and a decent crowd. I can't imagine what kind of rent controlled deal allows Barrow Pub to exist on this block, but it's enough to make me want to lobby for renters' rights at the steps of City Hall. This joint is gloriously divey. I am pretty sure the same 5 guys perched on stools when I walked in for the first time a few years ago are the same exact ones sitting there last night. Barrow's will always have a special place in my heart. For four years this place was my cheers. Now that I have moved a bit further out to Queens I don't frequent it as often as I'd like. Natalie and Missy are the best! I loved walking into Barrows and knowing the regulars, shooting a bit of pool, and having a low key night. A solid bar. Folks, this is NOT A DIVE BAR. And that's okay! This is a neighborhood bar, with great friendly bartenders, reasonable prices for the West Village, a pool table and juke box.
