I need to tell you something about the radio dial metaphor before we get into the food, because somebody at AM/FM thought about it very hard and I respect them for it. AM is the morning frequency. Clear signal, familiar, consistent. The kind of broadcast that has been there your whole life, same time, same station, dependable in a way that makes you not notice it until one day you do and you think, oh, that's what that was. FM is the other thing. FM is later and looser and has a pulse under it. FM does not explain itself. FM just starts playing and you either stay in the car or you don't. AM/FM at 1950 Market Center Boulevard in the Design District is both of these things simultaneously, in a former barbecue space, with a Ferris wheel in the backyard that you cannot ride, and I need you to accept all of that information as a single coherent sentence because that is the restaurant. Here is who AM/FM was built for: musicians coming off a late night with nowhere to be, morning shift workers who need eggs and a moment of peace before everything starts, neighbors who want a place that will eventually learn their names and not make a big deal about it. Matthew Harber and Annette Marin of Spune Productions, who make a career putting music in rooms, looked at the former Ferris Wheeler space and thought, we should feed people here and also play music and also not kick them out until two in the morning on the weekends. I agree completely and have no follow up questions. Now the food, which is the reason I am sitting here typing this instead of doing something responsible. Chef Anastacia Quiñones-Pittman, who is a James Beard semifinalist and who knows exactly what she is doing at all times, built the menu around what she calls Mexican-American kitchens and Nuevo Southern traditions, which is a phrase that sounds like a genre of music and also tastes like one. The menu is available all day, breakfast through close, which matters because I made a decision to go at an hour I will not specify that was neither breakfast nor dinner and was instead a kind of liminal food moment that most restaurants will not accommodate. AM/FM accommodated it without judgment or comment. They simply handed me a menu. I liked them immediately I ordered the breakfast croissant. Scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, beefsteak tomato, all pressed inside dough and presented to me with a side of EBTB mayo because somebody in that kitchen understood the assignment completely. It arrived and I ate it in the way that I eat things when I am trying to remember every detail for later, which is slowly and with an expression on my face that concerned a nearby table. I also got the French toast because the French toast has sweet potato puree and candied pecans on it and at that point you are not eating breakfast food you are eating a decision that someone made with great confidence and full commitment. It was correct. The confidence was warranted. I finished it and sat with the empty plate for a moment the way you sit with something that is done but that you are not quite ready to be done with. The room is all banquettes and warm corners and the kind of lighting that communicates this is not a place with any urgency, which after spending the last eighteen months eating at places that are trying very hard to be perceived as places trying very hard, felt like finding a radio station that has no sponsors and no agenda and is just playing something good because it's good. Boxer was at home when I got back, furious about the chorizo smell on my jacket. I told him nothing. Will I be back. I have already planned what I am ordering for the FM side of the evening and it involves the cocktail menu and the backyard stage and at least one instance of staying later than I originally told myself I would stay. Which is the correct outcome for any restaurant worth reviewing and the only one I can honestly report. read more

I'm on the fence about this place.. the vibe is amazing, the team is lovely but the food doesn't quite hit the mark. I do appreciate their happy hour, I would've been more disappointed if I had paid full price for some of the stuff. The deviled eggs were too salty and the pimento cheese made them super sharp. The fried green tomatoes were okay but might have been better with something other than green goddess dressing. We also tried the daily pot pie which was green chicken chile or something and it was quite bad. Lastly we got the chicken Caesar sandwich and while the chicken was cooked perfectly, the chipotle Caesar dressing wasn't my favorite. We ate it with a side of ranch and that helped. Would be great if they offered this with classic Caesar dressing as well. I'd be willing to come back to try brunch or something else on the menu but I think the food needs some work. read more

Came to AM/FM for brunch with some friends. The decor inside is really nice and makes it feel elevated. The service was great and staff did not miss a beat. The food was just okay. I had the milanease chicken Cesar sandwich and it was okay. I did not think it was worth the price on the menu. I wonder if it was a wrap instead of a sandwich if it would've tasted better. We finally left venue at almost 9pm, when show was supposed to start at 7pm. At no point did they make any announcement or attempt to tell patrons why the show had not started. This was a VENUE GENERATOR ISSUE according to artist page the next day, who also did not post anything during the set time to notify fans that there was an issue either. When we left I asked the "box office" people what was going on and they "didn't know" and didn't make any offer to us, the paying customers, to resolve the issue. Very unimpressed, don't waste your money here because if they have any issues they will not do anything about it and you'll literally just throw it away. read more

Cute little place. We went on a Sunday late afternoon and it was perfect. Great music on and the service was great. Drinks were good, but the food was the star of the show. I hate that I didn't take proper photos. All I have are the screenshots from my food-logging app. Will definitely be back. They have a DJ booth set up, and I know they'll be having some great live music in the back, but this old fuddy duddy will be back for the more chill vibe that I experienced on a late Sunday afternoon. The chilaquiles were ok- a little too bland for my liking. My friend enjoyed their pancakes and hash browns, but wasn't a big fan of the grits made with hominy. Came in on a Saturday night as a party of 5. We all ordered food and drinks and we had good service. The folks who ordered the fried green tomatoes said they were bland, which is unfortunate because our hot dog and fries were pretty tasty and seasoned lol. I got a rose martini that I found to be too sweet, but the whiskey connoisseur of our group said they had a great whiskey selection. The DJ had a pretty good set, lots of R&B which we enjoyed. A hash brown. What sounds like a simple, humble side dish is anything but. It deserves its own spotlight, its own fan club, honestly its own section on the menu. Completely unbelievable. Order it. Trust me. The service matched the food every step of the way. My server Alberto was an absolute rockstar -- attentive, energetic, and clearly passionate about taking care of his tables. I had an amazing time at the new AM/FM. The food was incredible. The service was amazing and have nothing but good things to say and I'm not the type to give up flowers if it isn't deserved. I had the pork belly toast, which was awesome portions and prepared amazingly with a house made fermented hot sauce that was to die for. I also had the hashbrowns, which was extremely unique and delicious. I had the stuffed meatloaf and the pot pie and both were incredible. They have a great thing going here and it is a hidden gem I highly recommend. The drinks were well crafted and the bartenders were attentive and suggested some amazing cocktails. I even mentioned wanting to try a mezcal ny sour and while they didn't have egg whites Pete went in the back and made it for me. All the bartenders and servers are top notch. Everyone was friendly and made sure I had everything I neeeded. They have a great thing going and I'm sure this spot will end up the next hot spot in Dallas. I highly recommend you try it either do brunch or dinner. I was really impressed by everything. The decor and ambience is a nice setting for a date night but also a good brunch vibe. Went for happy hour - we got the meatloaf sammie and the mozeralla LT sammie. Both were delicious and very flavorful! I was a big fan of the meatloaf sammie which had arugula and stuffed jalapeño peppers in it. Huge portions for $8 happy hour sandwiches. We also got the agave punch drink, which tasted a little watered down to me, but for the price we weren't mad about it. The service was friendly and receptive. read more
