If Gloria's and Texas de Brazil had a baby--with proper valet service--this would be it. Upscale, classy, and packed with top-tier service, it's the perfect date-night spot. It was my first visit, and it was absolutely worth the wait. I've seen all the Instagram posts, and I finally got my chance to experience it for myself. Since it was Taco Tuesday, I had to order the tacos and the ceviche. I snagged a cozy corner seat so I could take in the entire atmosphere, and everything was spot on. We ordered a few appetizers like Sea bass ceviche, Lobster elote, Coliflor asada, guacamole and chips, they were all delicious! I had 2 cocktails, the Margarita with hibiscus and a Skinny Margarita that tasted more like a Paloma. Strips with 6 unique sauces to experiment with. The lobster elote was a unique offering and tasted nice. It was good but I probably would try something different next time. The complementary chips and salsa are Next level due to the multiple salsas at varying spice levels and the chips are house made. We ordered shrimp tacos and fish tacos and neither were missing flavor or texture however, the fish tacos took the prize. Crispy fish, flavorful sauce and crunchy slaw. Both had very good taste and flavor. The ambiance look to be better inside than in the outside patio area. Luckily we got sat on a side where the sun really did not bother us, but there were some tables that were just not satisfied with all the sudden hitting them right in the face. Stopped by The Mexican in the Turtle Creek area for an event. When you arrive, the restaurant is beautiful and definitely doesn't feel like you are in Dallas. The only parking option pretty much is valet however, there might be a spot or two on the street if you don't mind parallel parking or if you would rather not valet your car. The entrance is located in the valet area and you'll then walk inside and proceed to the host stand to be seated. The atmosphere feels very upscale and nice with a lot of gold everywhere. We seated in one of the private rooms off to the side. When we sat down, we participated in a tequila tasting of a Anejo tequila and a Blanco tequila which were both excellent. I then placed a drink order for the Frida cocktail which contained siete misterios mezcal, pineapple, and pomegranate liqueur. The drink was excellent and surprisingly very strong. Next, I ordered the New York strip steak which was a 14 oz heartbrand akaushi american wagyu with roja habanero sauce on the side. The steak was excellent and had great flavor and not too much fat. The roja habanero sauce was very spicy but added a nice flavor contrast to the steak. Lastly, for dessert I ordered the cuatro leches cake which also had elderflower-soaked berries, rompope, and licor 43 cream. The cake was excellent and one of the best leches cakes I've had in Dallas. If you are in the area and looking for a high end dining option for a date night I'd highly recommend checking out The Mexican. read more

I did it again. I let my high expectations get ahead of the actual experience. As a result I was disappointed in The Mexican. Yelpers tend to make a big deal about milestone reviews like,100,1000 or in my case....2000! So,think it through. I've decided a special milestone review doesn't have to be a gleaming 5 Star beauty all tied up with a bow. An honest well thought out review by a well qualified Yelper ( moi?) is maybe a better idea. Why? It's just as important if not more so, to really look under the hood and kick the tires, as the price point and expectations rise. With that in mind,here goes. Location Ok,let's go way back and start from the first. This area was established as a light industrial and manufacturing location back in the 1950s, after the Corp of Engineers upgraded the levee system preventing flooding by the Trinity River. The area went through a phase of economic decay but is now at the apex of Gentrification. The mid century building The Mexican occupies, is unrecognizable, as the small manufacturing plant it started as. Beautiful. Design It's no accident this area is known as the design district. Again, established in the 1950s, design in Dallas, more so than ever, is orchestrated out of one of the many companies here. It's front and center in The Mexican. When you walk in, the well thought out and elegant entryway,your eyes adjust to see a beautiful cohesion of lighting,materials,surfaces and proportion. Check Food Their website states their intention as," The Promise". Paraphrasing, " to transport you to an enticing faraway corner of Mexico. To manifest our power and passion in the kitchen. Carefully thought out and executed with intention....etc. Possibly the staff working the night I was there haven't been briefed on the mission. It missed on every account except the drinks. EL Rey "the King" was the best drink I've had in a long time and at $19 it should be. I could have sat at the beautiful bar drinking these all night. I would have been happier. Add the Frieda witch was good but sweet and the very good Muieres Divinas and the drinks do the trick. Everything on the menu sounds enticing and after a hard choice was made I went with the: Ahi Tuna Jardin and Camarones-describied as seasame crusted sushi grade yellowfin tuna,arugula,shaved babycarrots,watermelon reddish. lime rice,jardin sauce. The two overcooked shrimp on top hid the very small extremely thin sliced tuna. The weird rice didn't help and at $48 is better suited on the appetizer menu at $28. Camarones-enchiladas are described as sautéed gulf shrimp, toasted garlic,grilled onions.Oaxaca cheese, queso fresco, salsa ranchera. Really didn't look like it sounded and was underwhelming. At $38 for two uninspiring, small enchiladas, this dish was DOA. Service Our server while nice was overbearing and obviously had minimal if any fine dining experience. painful. In closing, I have to add that, I'm not part of this type of dining scene. You know the one where intentions are good, stakes are high, but you don't feel valued. I came through a recommendation of a coworker and didn't expect much, but when I say I was blown away??? I mean it. Wow. First and foremost, Hanna was our server. She was nice and generally speaking the service was quick. Everything we ordered came out in a timely fashion. Also, the restaurant is stunning! I had to take a bit of a walk to find the bathroom but when I did I was pleasantly surprised by the outdoor area, the decor and just how fabulous the bathroom was in general. A huge vanity with pink ottomans. Full length mirrors covering all sides. Clean, spacious. Okay for food. I loved almost everything we tried. We had: Sea bass ceviche - 10/10 sea bass was amazing, lots of light and refreshing flavors Lobster elote - 8/10 great, creamy, slightly burned corn but still good AuguaChile de ribeye - 1000/10. SO SO good. Steak cooked perfectly. The sauce with the arugula and onions? I wish we ordered more Coliflor Asada - 10/10. Still thinking about it. One of the most unique things I've had. The truffle oil is what did it for me Camarones Gobernador - 7/10. Great flavors! Probably would've liked more if I had some kind of pico or if they'd been on flour not corn Chicharron de ribeye - 4/10. A waste of wagyu to me. Meat had no flavor at all. Comes with a full bowl of guacamole and tortillas btw Chicharron de pulpo (crispy octopus) - 10/10. Well seasoned, not too thick or chewy Tostaditas - 5/10. Not my fave. Just a ball of beef. Lacking flavor, a little dry. But mostly lacking flavor Beso de verano (mocktail) - 9/10. wonderfully tart I can't wait to come back and try some other menu items like the Lobster enchiladas and maybe even the quatro leches. We began with tableside guacamole and queso fundido, followed by tacos, a 22 oz ribeye, and a round of cocktails: an Old Fashioned and a Paloma, both well executed. The experience was pleasant across the board, though the food itself never quite rose to the level the pricing suggests. It was decent, but not particularly memorable. The exception, and the highlight of the evening, was the campechana dessert. A perfect finish and easily the standout dish of the evening. A true 10/10. The Mexican excels in presentation, ambiance, and hospitality. It's a beautiful place to spend a night out, even if the kitchen doesn't fully match the promise of the room. Came back about 10 months after a bad experience, and I'm really glad i gave this place another try. The food has always been amazing. This time, the service was absolutely amazing, a complete turnaround from my last visit. We had the ribeye chicharrón, which was delicious, and the guacamole was perfectly limey, so good. I ordered the black angus tacos and loved them. I also really enjoyed both of my drinks. Overall, this visit completely changed my perspective. I look forward to returning. She was dismissive, rude, and spent more time glaring at our table than managing. When my friends who made the reservation tried to talk to her, she straight up would not talk to them. Like ma'am... what is your job, exactly? But wait. It gets better. Not only was Candace staring at us with daggers for eyes, she also started recruiting other employees to point at us like we were on the FBI's restaurant watchlist. At that point, I wasn't sure if I was at dinner or a stakeout. Lastly, there's the $25 cake-cutting fee. I, just a guest to dinner, was asked to have them cut the cake. Silly me--I thought they were being accommodating. Turns out, it was for $25? Respect the hustle. Cut it yourself friends lol. Final thoughts? Good food, amazing server, horrific management. Try not to make eye contact with Candace--unless you like being pointed at like you're on some sort of restaurant watchlist. Two of us had the scallop and shrimp entree - the scallops were cooked to perfection but we both found the shrimp overcooked and chewy. The lobster tacos were very good. My husband brought me here for our 2 year wedding anniversary. This was some of the BEST food I have had in a restaurant in a LONG time. I had the filet cooked rare... OMG! It's was like butter! The valet will have a line, so arrive early. We didn't see any public parking nearby, so be prepared to valet. Reservation or not they will not seat you until your entire party arrives. The dress code was debatable, we saw plenty of jeans, tennis shoes, bra tops & the girl seated next to us literally had her but cheeks showing her skirt was so short. There was also plenty of skin in the scant clothing the girls around the bar were wearing. HOWEVER! Our waiter, Carlos was outstanding. We were originally seated on the patio but the sun was shining directly in my husbands eyes so he moved us, without us even asking. He kept our waters full, meals coming in hot, but the best part was he was so joyful. He had a smile the entire night, never rushed us, genuinely seemed happy to be there working on this Saturday night. The chips were tasty, the salsas weren't anything special although the presentation was unique. The margarita was tasty, but again nothing special and there was so much ice it was gone quickly. My husband tried The Mexican with blanco and it was really tasty. We originally decided to start with the Cripsy Pork Belly off the Hot Shareables menu and it was SO DELICIOUS we decided to order a few more Hot Shareables as our meal instead of entrees. CRISPY PORK BELLY - the portion size was exactly what it should have been - plenty to share. The fresh tortillas, sauce & sides were so tasty. This was truly a wonderful start. BARBACOA DE ARRACHERA - Again the portion size was excellent, plenty to share. This also came with the yummy fresh tortillas and sides. The meat was so tender and so tasty we could have ordered two of these. CHICHARRÓN DE RIBEYE - our least favorite of the night. It was good, but we didn't realize the meat would be served in a bowl of guacamole. My husband is not a fan of avocado or guacamole so he tried a few bites of the meat, which was good, but finished off the Barbocoa while I dipped fresh tortilla in the guacamole. For such a nice venue, this was disappointing to bring my friends here for my birthday celebration and receive such terrible service. The service level was very much below par and the lack of hospitality was apparent. 3 of my guests' cocktails had little to no trace of liquor, 1 guest revived the wrong drink 3 repeated times (by the forth said forget it), my finance had to order his drink 3 separate times because each of the tequilas he asked for was "out" and we had to chase down our waiter anytime we needed service. When he approached the table he said "what do you want" as if we were bothering him. I was debating between giving a 3 star or a 4 star for the reasons below. 3 stars: ~ When checking in they told us to wait at the bar until our table was ready, but each open bar seat that came available was immediately reserved. One half of the bar was empty with reserved signs on a Saturday night with patrons coming in. This is not acceptable and makes us patrons feel lessor than. Because of this alone I will not return. ~ New server who could not remember anything we ordered, another server had to keep coming to confirm our order. ~ Food was just average.
