Great ambiance. Seated on time with a reservation. Service was good although often hard to understand our waiter who mumbled a little bit. Our cocktails were all good - and the appetizers were very good. We had the crispy pork belly and the tostaditas with barbacoa. The crispy pork belly was especially delicious and I would order as my own dinner in the future. It comes with onions and sauces and corn tortillas and it's to die for - so crispy and flavorful. We ordered the Bistec enchiladas and they were good but not as good as the appetizers. They give you a variety of sauces when you're seated that you keep throughout the meal - from mild to spicy but I would say the "spicy" is on the mild side. Still good and flavorful but not unapproachable for most ppl. We had the Campechana dessert and it was a little strange. It was basically a vanilla Icecream cake with a crispy waffle cone like layering that was really hard to break until it sat a while. It was oddly addicting but also not that good? I can't explain it. We went to the cigar lounge area after dinner and had Mexican espresso martinis and watched football before heading home. There was little smoke smell but very minimal until it got later. Around 8:30 (on a Saturday night) ppl started smoking cigars and they opened the side windows and being 90degrees right now - it became less enjoyable so we decided to end the night. In the fall that room would probably be quite lovely with the windows open. They have comfortable seating and fire pits. Really more of a 4.5 out of 5. Hospitality: From the moment I arrived, everything was on point. No wait to valet, the hostesses were warm and welcoming, and the service was excellent. My server, Daniel, was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable walked me through the menu and gave great recommendations. Food: Everything I had was delicious. I started with the chips and assortment of salsas and dips, which were really were incredible! For Restaurant Week, I had the tortilla soup, the shrimp/bacon tacos, and the leches cake for dessert. The tortilla soup was especially impressive, both in presentation and flavor, and the shrimp tacos were excellent. Honestly, there was not a bad bite all night. Ambiance: The restaurant is beautiful--chic, polished, and much larger than I expected. The Mexican offered a fun twist on traditional Mexican food. My family was visiting from out of town and I wanted to treat them to a fun dinner. The Mexican delivered just that. Finally made it over to The Mexican and boy, a time was had! Service here is top notch. From the moment I stepped in the door I was treated like a celebrity! Complimentary champagne, and AMAZING service from our waitress. I've literally never had a server with such extensive knowledge of a restaurant's menu. Very impressive! We also had a amazing experience with the manager. We needed some accommodations for our table and he was so thoughtful. He even provided us with a complimentary cuatro leches cake slice! (which was HUGE btw). While the service was exponentially excellent, the food was...good. The menu was what I would describe as "elevated Mexican" with some other Latin-inspired steakhouse dishes (think filet mignon with some salsa on the side) Everything was good, but nothing really stood out for me. The complementary chips and salsa are Next level due to the multiple salsas at varying spice levels and the chips are house made. Stopped by The Mexican in the Turtle Creek area for an event. When you arrive, the restaurant is beautiful and definitely doesn't feel like you are in Dallas. The only parking option pretty much is valet however, there might be a spot or two on the street if you don't mind parallel parking or if you would rather not valet your car. The entrance is located in the valet area and you'll then walk inside and proceed to the host stand to be seated. The atmosphere feels very upscale and nice with a lot of gold everywhere. We seated in one of the private rooms off to the side. When we sat down, we participated in a tequila tasting of a Anejo tequila and a Blanco tequila which were both excellent. I then placed a drink order for the Frida cocktail which contained siete misterios mezcal, pineapple, and pomegranate liqueur. The drink was excellent and surprisingly very strong. Next, I ordered the New York strip steak which was a 14 oz heartbrand akaushi american wagyu with roja habanero sauce on the side. The steak was excellent and had great flavor and not too much fat. The roja habanero sauce was very spicy but added a nice flavor contrast to the steak. Lastly, for dessert I ordered the cuatro leches cake which also had elderflower-soaked berries, rompope, and licor 43 cream. The cake was excellent and one of the best leches cakes I've had in Dallas. I did it again. I let my high expectations get ahead of the actual experience. As a result I was disappointed in The Mexican. Yelpers tend to make a big deal about milestone reviews like,100,1000 or in my case....2000! So,think it through. I've decided a special milestone review doesn't have to be a gleaming 5 Star beauty all tied up with a bow. An honest well thought out review by a well qualified Yelper ( moi?) is maybe a better idea. Why? It's just as important if not more so, to really look under the hood and kick the tires, as the price point and expectations rise. With that in mind,here goes. Location Ok,let's go way back and start from the first. This area was established as a light industrial and manufacturing location back in the 1950s, after the Corp of Engineers upgraded the levee system preventing flooding by the Trinity River. The area went through a phase of economic decay but is now at the apex of Gentrification. The mid century building The Mexican occupies, is unrecognizable, as the small manufacturing plant it started as. Beautiful. Design It's no accident this area is known as the design district. Again, established in the 1950s, design in Dallas, more so than ever, is orchestrated out of one of the many companies here. It's front and center in The Mexican. When you walk in, the well thought out and elegant entryway,your eyes adjust to see a beautiful cohesion of lighting,materials,surfaces and proportion. Check Food Their website states their intention as," The Promise". Paraphrasing, " to transport you to an enticing faraway corner of Mexico. To manifest our power and passion in the kitchen. Carefully thought out and executed with intention....etc. Possibly the staff working the night I was there haven't been briefed on the mission. It missed on every account except the drinks. EL Rey "the King" was the best drink I've had in a long time and at $19 it should be. I could have sat at the beautiful bar drinking these all night. I would have been happier. Add the Frieda witch was good but sweet and the very good Muieres Divinas and the drinks do the trick. Everything on the menu sounds enticing and after a hard choice was made I went with the: Ahi Tuna Jardin and Camarones-describied as seasame crusted sushi grade yellowfin tuna,arugula,shaved babycarrots,watermelon reddish. lime rice,jardin sauce. The two overcooked shrimp on top hid the very small extremely thin sliced tuna. The weird rice didn't help and at $48 is better suited on the appetizer menu at $28. Camarones-enchiladas are described as sautéed gulf shrimp, toasted garlic,grilled onions.Oaxaca cheese, queso fresco, salsa ranchera. Really didn't look like it sounded and was underwhelming. At $38 for two uninspiring, small enchiladas, this dish was DOA. Service Our server while nice was overbearing and obviously had minimal if any fine dining experience. painful. In closing, I have to add that, I'm not part of this type of dining scene. You know the one where intentions are good, stakes are high, but you don't feel valued. Oh my goodness, I haven't been to a place that shook me to my core like The Mexican in a while. I came through a recommendation of a coworker and didn't expect much, but when I say I was blown away??? I mean it. Wow. First and foremost, Hanna was our server. She was nice and generally speaking the service was quick. Everything we ordered came out in a timely fashion. Also, the restaurant is stunning! I had to take a bit of a walk to find the bathroom but when I did I was pleasantly surprised by the outdoor area, the decor and just how fabulous the bathroom was in general. A huge vanity with pink ottomans. Full length mirrors covering all sides. Clean, spacious. Okay for food. I loved almost everything we tried. We had: Sea bass ceviche - 10/10 sea bass was amazing, lots of light and refreshing flavors Lobster elote - 8/10 great, creamy, slightly burned corn but still good AuguaChile de ribeye - 1000/10. SO SO good. Steak cooked perfectly. The sauce with the arugula and onions? I wish we ordered more Coliflor Asada - 10/10. Still thinking about it. One of the most unique things I've had. The truffle oil is what did it for me Camarones Gobernador - 7/10. Great flavors! Probably would've liked more if I had some kind of pico or if they'd been on flour not corn Chicharron de ribeye - 4/10. A waste of wagyu to me. Meat had no flavor at all. Comes with a full bowl of guacamole and tortillas btw Chicharron de pulpo (crispy octopus) - 10/10. Well seasoned, not too thick or chewy Tostaditas - 5/10. Not my fave. Just a ball of beef. Lacking flavor, a little dry. But mostly lacking flavor Beso de verano (mocktail) - 9/10. wonderfully tart I can't wait to come back and try some other menu items like the Lobster enchiladas and maybe even the quatro leches. I first need to give props to our waiter, Sebastian. He was excellent! Very knowledgable about the menu and different pallets per person. We got several appetizers, ahi tuna, sea bass ceviche, fried steak guac, and some others. Sea bass ceviche was flavorless; however, the fried beet strings that went a long with it were excellent. The steak guac also had no flavor. We had to add jalapeños, cilantro, onions, limes, and tomatoes for it to taste better. The ahi tuna appetizer was the best! So flavorful! All the toppings went well, especially the mango. This is the only appetizer I would get again. The cocktails I had weren't great. They were sugary and tasted like they used cheap syrups. Now the cocktails my husband got were way better! The seasonal pomegranate margarita was so delicious! One of the best margaritas I've ever had! It was the perfect balance of a little sweetness, but not too strong. The only entree we ordered was the cowboy ribeye and they were sold out. This is unacceptable. We went around 3pm on a Sunday. If the cowboy steak was sold out, that should have been stated when the entree recommendations were given by Sebastian. This is not his fault, the kitchen needs to communicate better to the waiters. We ended with the bone marrow filet tacos and they were phenomenal! So tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. Maybe one day we we'll go back to try the cowboy ribeye and other menu items. read more

I have also done a few work happy hours there with clients at the bar and have always loved the service and the lobster elote. This was the first time I remember ordering the himachi. I may have had it previously but this time I remember. I might remember until the day I die. My best friend was sitting across from me and warned me but it was too late and I had already eaten one of the peppers on the dish. No one warned us! I am from Louisiana and that was the most heat I have ever experienced. We felt like we had been poisoned. The rest of the meal was delicious but it might take me a while to get over that trauma. The exception, and the highlight of the evening, was the campechana dessert. A perfect finish and easily the standout dish of the evening. A true 10/10.
