This review is long overdue as my husband and I have been frequenting this location ever since we moved to the neighborhood last summer. You guys: this place is excellent. What propelled me to finally write the review is the fact that I just discovered that they have a roof top nursery (just opened about 3 months ago!) and it has a fantastic selection of succulents and cacti....all at very competitive prices. And I'm talking a really solid selection of succulents and cacti - not just the average lot you find at Home Depot, OSH or Armstrong Garden Center. Great - and currently undiscovered nursery aside - the employees here are always warm and helpful. Unlike big box stores, you always have someone asking if you're doing ok or if there are any questions that Altadena Hardware can help answer. Came here earlier today because we were trying to install a faucet and the supply lines were too short (turns out only one was so we returned the other). We thought about going to Home Depot but my boyfriend did not want to drive 20-ish minutes for a few items. We looked online and Altadena Hardware was the closest place possibly carrying what we needed. We arrived within 15 minutes of closing but we didn't feel rushed to leave. We asked for the plumbing aisle and were directed there. The associate who helped us was very personable and answered the questions we had. The whole process to getting what we needed was smooth. Excellent customer service! PARKING: There was plenty of parking in front of the store. COST: Slightly more expensive than big name places like Home Depot, but if you live nearby and don't want to drive far away for a few small items, this is the place to go! read more

Only one other review at the point of this writing!?!?! For the oldest hardware store in Altadena? For being housed in a historic building that used to be a Market Basket? For a place that is still a family owned/run business? For a place that may not exist in 5 years? I recall riding my bike to Altadena Hardware way back in the late 70's to buy 3 nails for a wooden rocket that I was building. 3 nails! And although Don (the current owner, and son of the "original") and I were much younger then, he let me have them for a nickel. And quite frankly, the store still has that small country store feeling along with the familiar smell of an aged hardware store. Perfect. When you walk in, you can feel yourself shed the skin of big box stores, and you have a sudden urge to sit a spell and chew some tobacco. I heard rumors that Don is thinking about retiring and selling the shop. Or worse. Closing it. This would truly be the end of an era. This is one of oldest businesses in Altadena, and I love it. They aren't Home Depot. They don't try to be. They don't sell lumber, well maybe a little. What you get here are the random items that you need for day-to-day up keep. Broken sprinkler? they got you covered. Quick drywall patch? check. Replace screendoor closer? check. Rope, ladder, chain, wheelbarrow, oven knob, door mat, fly trap, screwdriver, hacksaw blade, red decorative light bulbs, rose clippers, spraypaint, clothespins, drain stopper, corkboard, "No Solicitors" sign, and a child lock for the toilet? check. But what I really like is that I can ask them a question, get an answer, and get home to complete my "honey-do" list. OSH is 5 miles away, Home Depot is 20, but they're world's apart in helpfulness-itude. You might spend a little more here, but not that much. They're an ACE Hardware affiliate and have ACE prices. The best hardware store in Altadena and north of the 210. Their service is the most impressive aspect of this business. They greet you immediately when you come in the store (every time) and ask if they can help you find something. All of the staff seems to know the products carried very well, down to the most obscure screw and bolt. The second thing that impresses me about this store is that they seem to have everything in stock that a handyman or home renovator could want. I have purchased things there that I could not find at Lowe's or Home Depot. Plenty of street parking on this cute little historic neighborhood pocket commercial district just off of Lake. I moved to the Altadena area about 6 months ago and of course had a ton of projects around the house. I stumbled across Altadena Hardware and was so glad I did! It's like stepping back in time! Super friendly and knowledgable staff, great selection of products and competitve prices. They mixed several colors of paint for me and even logged it in the computer in case I ever needed to buy more in the future. Now that's service! One of the great hardware stores. There aren't many left like this that I know of (except maybe Baller in Silver Lake/Los Feliz). Incredibly helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. They've helped me figure out the best ways to go about quirky little projects, from ideas to advice to making cuts so I don't screw them up trying on my own. I go there instead of bigger stores whenever possible, which is most of the time. By far the best hardware store! For a smallish store they have pretty much everything you'd need at the right price. But the best thing about this store is by far their employees! They are never short staffed. They are all extremely knowledgeable and are happy to help from picking out some paint color to figuring out a solution to a unique problem. This place is amazing. We just bought our first home in Altadena and after trekking to Home Depot once, we figured there had to be a better way. Local hardware, save on gas, buy local, and get back home. Sure you can drive to HD but definitely won't have that "can I help you" experience that you get here. On a street that goes back to the early days of Altadena (think street cars). Somehow still has the small town vibe. But modern, well stocked with every from irrigation, gardening, to plumbing. I don't drive to the "big box" store without first checking in with this hardware store. I can get just about anything I need right here in Altadena, saving me from the freeway drive, and that long lost search in the "Box" looking for what I need for my projects. Altadena Hardware offers personal service, If I don't feel like looking around for what I need one of the many helpful employees will get me exactly what I am looking for and bring it to the checkout counter. You can still buy one screw if you want or a prepackaged box of screws if you prefer. I wish they stocked a few 2x4s but its a hardware store not a lumber yard. Altadena Hardware has continued to improve every year in the six years I have lived in Altadena, I look forward to many successful years and successful visits finding just what I need to complete projects in one stop with great products and service. read more

I have been going to this hardware store for about 2 years now so it is about time to let the secret out. This is the greatest hardware store for miles without a doubt. It is almost impossible to walk in the door without one of the staff asking "need some help". Not only do they offer to help but they really know what they are talking about. I grew up building houses and working around the house with my dad, so I do know a lot about all the trades. The point is the staff here are not BSing you they truly know what they are talking about. Worst customer service! I called and asked "Hi do you happen to have face masks in stock?" And this lady paused & hung up on me without responding one word. If this place has decent employees, service, product, management... I'll never know because I refuse to go in or ever recommend this place to anyone. We're in a scary time right now. Bigger and better than the last time I was there several years ago. The key to my gate lock disappeared so I went here to buy two new locks - two locks with the same key. Able to get a couple additional keys and get out very quickly. While I still miss OSh - this is close by and not as overwhelming as Home Depot which is in Monrovia. read more

The first time I went in the store sometime ago, the staff was friendly and helpful. So I came back recently and apologized right off the bat, due to the line I didn't see behind me referencing Covid 19 guidelines, and the social distancing and all. To echo Sophie B., I don't know who it was at the register, but he immediately started barking at me. Yes, I wrote it, "Barking!." "What do you need?!" two times. I refused to answer. He was so rude AND I hadn't even had a chance to find the picture on my phone to show his mean butt what, in fact, it was that I needed (excuse the pun). Thankfully someone else came to me without the maladjustment and chip on his shoulder and helped me quickly. Sheesh! Someone else on register was professional and courteous too, and even helped me to my car. The barker needs to take a page or two from their book. read more

This is my new, favorite hardware store. We've lost OSH, and seem to be losing the True Value on Fair Oaks near the freeway, so I went online to find a place. I'm so glad I found Altadena Hardware. This store is not too big and not too small. They have a selection of items for every category needed to keep a small home and it's contents in good repair.
