The only reason I didn't give 5-stars was because of their 'ZERO RETURNS ON TOOLS' policy, even if unopened or defective out of the box. What a great hardware store! A few months ago, I needed some countertop paint for one of my rentals. In the past, I'd go to the big box hardware store and purchase is, but they no longer stock the paint. I called the Ace in Sierra Madre and they told me they can't sell it, because of some SCAQMD rule. I thought they knew about some law, so I almost gave up. My friend owned a True Value in Glenview, IL, and I've been in his store - really great place, but closed now. Anyway, went on line to check inventory and Altadena didn't have it. But it was available at another True Value in Los Angeles. I didn't want to drive all the way there, so I called Altadena and spoke to a really great guy. He told me he could order the paint for me. Oh boy, how long is this going to take - that's what was going through my mind! He told me he'd have it there the next day. What???? Yes, the next day. And he could mix the right color for me! Two days later (I wasn't able to go there the next day), I walked into the store and my first impression was - wow, this is a really cool hardware store - like my friend's store. I talked to the paint guy and he showed me the can - yup, that's it. He mixed the paint for me, made sure it was the right color, then I checked out and painted my countertop! The level of customer service is exceptional. They not only helped save me a lot of driving time, but they kept their promise. It's a rarity in this day and age and I'm very impressed. There's always people to help (unlike a Lowe's or Home Depot, where staff seems to disappear the moment you need them.) I love this place! I live right across the street so it is super convenient and WAY WORTH the few extra pennies to just be able to walk over and get whatever I need. The staff is very friendly and the service is outstanding, especially Anthony who is always so warm and polite. You can tell that his momma raised him right! LOL! I have 4 sons of my own but they're all back east where I'm from. He doesn't know this (until now) but its always a pleasure to interact with him because he gives me my little dose of motherly affection. :-) So from soup to nuts, these guys are knowledgeable and do it all. If you are a woman...DONT BOTHER! The management and staff, aside from a select few, are ABHORRENT! They will laugh, belittle, and generally behave like entitled chauvinists! I know that I come with difficult questions and hard to find items, as I have worked in design and construction for nearly 20 years. An appropriate answer for any of my unanswerable questions is; I don't know, let me look into that. In the last 3 of my 4 visits, I was scoffed at, laughed at, jokes about (in my presence!) and TODAY walked away from as the (manager (owners son) Yelled over his shoulder "you're gonna need tape for that!" He advised me COMPLETELY incorrectly. After wasting several hours applying his inept solution, I did a you tube search and had the 80 cent, 2 minute solution in hand. I don't expect anyone to know everything. What I DO EXPECT, basic human decency and gender equality in the approach to client clients/customers! The first time I was poorly treated, I refrained from writing a r review. I instead called and was expertly quelled by Jimmy. After THIS many horrid experiences, I look forward to the 20 mile round trip to visit my friends in the Orange aprons whose mission statement is "UM, THATS NOT MY DEPARTMENT!" Umm, at least I'm not made to feel dumb! SHAMEFUL! Avoid this store at ALL COSTS! read more

We were planning ahead for the predicted extreme heat, and desperately needed a piece of plexiglass cut to fit an old glazed window that then needed an oval cut out of the center for the exhaust of a portable AC unit. We needed this for an elderly, housebound friend that is now confined to a wheelchair and who had no AC in her house. We called Home Depot and OSH and both said they'd cut the rectangle piece, but we were on our own for the most important part: the oval. I saw other reviews and called Altadena Hardware. Their staff were all over it! They cut it, and it fit PERFECTLY! I can't thank Jimmy, Anthony and the other staff at Altadena Hardware enough. We will be shopping there from now on, even if it isn't the closest hardware store to us. This is a true "can do" store! read more

For openers, I have to say that Jason C. gave a GREAT review!!! He looks young, so I will have to condescend to the fact that he is very prescient, because I am older and in fact, have experienced saying bye-bye to many things that I took for granted until they were gone, and now wish they were still here to enjoy. I always liked Don and Eleanor, and Don certainly knew his stuff, but I think he was a little short on personality and enthusiasm. He also seemed to be very disinterested in the store and its general appearance. So when I heard he was selling, it certainly did not come as a surprise. And we all know the disaster that occurred when Steve took over the place...and I am not talking just about the bus that tried to knock down the building. But now, as if a much higher source has shined down on the old historic building, that block of Altadena that not only spans from corner to corner, but also a period of what could well be over a hundred years, has been given not only a stay of execution, but also a renewed jolt of energy and enthusiasm. In the way of the most beneficial family of highly professional retailers with many years experience and know-how. I have always liked giving the small store retailer my business no matter what the cost, but now the pleasant staff and knowledgeable principals have really made the store a go-to destination for me. I love what they have done, and I am sure they will develop a very loyal following of customers and friends who will, like me, shop there anytime it is possible. My favorite of the staffers is Anthony, and if any of you out there are lenders, you should fund this kid in his own store because he would be awesome! And successful!!! read more

Great neighborhood hardware store. They do not carry lumbar of any size, but most everything else there I've been able to fine. Great for the weekend Warrior, if not specialize professionals. The staff is friendly and though they have a lot of young high school interns, the older people know what their stuff. I can't believe it's taken me so long to find this place. I was sad when Orchard in Pasadena closed because it was convenient, but it closing led me here and I'd say it's a trade up!
