I have never before been treated this well at a hardware store. Almost everywhere I have been, folks are nice and helpful, but at Altadena Hardware, they go the extra mile. I shopped at the hardware store for 15 years before the new owners bought it and spent a fortune there. I have had a number of run-ins with one of the employees since the new owners took over and today he told me I couldn't rent a carpet cleaner because I wanted to put the deposit on a separate card from the ATM card I wanted to pay for the rental and chemicals with. I was told that I was "argumentative" when I said that I had put deposits on my credit card for rental cars and hotel rooms all the time and no one ever questioned whether the card was good before, even if I wanted to ultimately pay with a different card. He said he no longer wanted to rent the machine to me. This situation is very sad because Altadena is a very small community. This salesman is a very bad representative of that store. He has a bad attitude and has been rude to me on other occasions. Other salespeople, especially Anthony--who is a hold over from the prior owner and takes very good care of me--are great to work with. read more

Don't let the size fool you. It has an amazing selection for its size. I think the difference for me has been that they carry a higher percentage of quality items, so they don't need as much room to carry more inferior products. That's been my take, anyway. Always super helpful with questions, delivery and help loading the car. read more

Altadena hardware is by far the best hardware store I've ever been in. The customer service is excellent and since the new owner took over the inventory is great. If you like the drive to the big box stores and then never get any help Altadena hardware isn't for you. We have a typical Altadena Home that needs constant attention. Altadena Hardware always has everything I need. The guys and gals there are always willing to help me figure out what the "thingamajig" I need really is and how to fix something or help me gather the items for my DYI. Last week our hot water heater died and we didn't hesitate to buy a new one there. What we bought had good reviews and a better warranty then the one we replaced. We may not have a decent grocery store in Altadena but we have the BEST hardware store!! read more

Best little hardware store EVER!! I just moved to the area and needed a little of "this and that"... everyone inside the store was so helpful. It was almost like a relay race: handing me from one expert to another until I found what I needed. They welcomed me to the neighborhood, set me up with a rewards program. I got keys made too... they also guided me to other local places where I could find what they didn't carry. Best team ever!! Came back twice in one day!!! 100% recommend it!!! read more

This family owned hardware store takes me right back to my youth and trips to Virgil's in Glendale with my grandfather. Small enough to be friendly, courteous and helpful, large enough to have what you need most times. The staff are waiting at the ready, prices are in line with the big chain stores. If they sold feed, tack and blue jeans, they'd be about as close to a country general store as one could be. It's just fun to go there and browse. read more

Altadena Hardware is a wonderful place to buy most anything you'll ever need, and then some. There are many excellent people there to answer your questions. For example, I needed to hang up a cowbell (Yes, I'm a musician). Something there came up with an ingenious solution. This is a great store. I love this place! Altadena Hardware provides old school customer service, the kind where you are helped by friendly, knowledgeable employees that seem as though they are there just for you. They obviously do their product research, as they have a fantastic selection of items, from household to seasonal to general goods. And If they don't have something, they will order it. this is one of the best hardware stores i have ever seen in my life. when we were moving into our new house some days we were running over here 5 times a day. every time you walk in people are friendly, knowledgeable and ready to assist or be helpful in any way. no more spending 3 hours wandering around home depot only to find out that they are out of stock with what you needed and dealing with employees that couldn't care less. this place keeps very good tabs on things being in stock. at first i thought it was small but they have surprising amount of stuff, and because things are rarely out of stock it feels like they somehow have more stuff that a store 3x as big. i really appreciate this business in the neighborhood. we have been here for 8 months and are huge fans of this place. read more

I love this place. It's a fantastic place to shop, great help and wonderful people. While it may cost you 20 cents more over all, you will save money by not driving down the hill and buying Home Cheapo items. If you don't find what you need, they can suggest something else that will work or tell you where to find it.....but I usually look for a solution that allows me to shop locally and support my local businesses.....that's community! read more

Although I have lived in Pasadena all of my life (60+), until recently I had not discovered this treasure. I have become a regular for all of the little things that keeping up a nearly-100-year-old house requires. The entire staff seems friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable about just about everything hardware-esque. While we have been painting and repairing our Altadena home for the next tenant, we have been back and forth to Altadena Hardware. Each time they have had what we need, and each time we have been created with immediate, courteous assistance. Prices are fine. Altadena hardware is actually a TRUE Value and contrary to what many think ive been to ace hardware down the street from altadena hardware and there double what altadena hardware is. and then true value on villa and fair oaks there just as bad if not worse price wise. the bad thing about masters besides the prices is that no one smiles its like someone died in there plus when you call they don't even know what your talking about yet its even the same in person. im not trying to be mean but im just saying how it went when i went to go and get a stem that altadena hardware didn't have in stock for a moen. all i know is i urge you if you haaven't been in the hardware store since don left or steve had the place please go back in i was met with a nice smile and a "good morning sir how are you today?" and then one of the younger gentlemen who was later to be named richard greeted me with a "can i help you find anything today?" my wife also would like me to add that yes the boys who work there are young but when she needed paint mixed tony i beleive his name was had no problem mixing me a gallon of paint. the girl at the register vanessa i think her name is is very nice and can run the register just as good as eleanor who i found out is running the store from the office with orderings and paying the bills now that don is gone. and that her son richard and her niece vanessa are "holding down the floor" while shes doing the banking. over all i love this store and not only is it helpful information but its also great customer service yes the physical look of the store is a bit messy which i brought it to richard and vanessas attention seeing as they carried themselves like they were in control of things and they reassured me that things are in the process of returning to the way they were. yes they are low on murchandise but that's something i need you guys and ladies to go in and ask. and the look ON THERE FACE WHEN THEY TELL YOU WHAT HAPPEN IS NOT DISGUST OR HATE OR ANGER BUT OF PAIN... let them tell you what really happened and it will totally shock you... over all i think its so cool i mean eleanor and her family don't even live in altadena they live in east los angeles and down in pasadena yet they drive up to altadena to open up the store that has "become there lives." because they as richard and vanessa said "love this store"... i think its amazing how someone who doesn't even live in altadena can be so caught up and in love with it even though there are lots of jerk altadenians who give them a hard time just because there young and mexican. but over all 10 out of 10 read more

Used to love Altadena Hardware, right up to today. The "manager" refused to refund or replace an set of garden shears, as "we used them incorrectly". Oh please, I think most people can use garden shears correctly, this type of lousy customer service has lost them a long time customer. read more

Great Neighborhood Resource. I have been a long time Altadena resident and have seen Altadena Hardware go through many changes. For a while there, after the previous owners sold it and moved, I wondered if they would survive. The new owners totally remodeled it and completely re-stocked it. Now I can find just about anything I need without having to go to the big box stores, and their prices are competitive. What a great resource for our neighborhood! I encourage all Altadena residents to support this business. It is in our own best interest to see companies like this do well. read more
