Very kind staff. I've visited this location several times to purchase paint, and everyone has been helpful and friendly. This is a neighborhood store that isn't too large, but it carries excellent ACE product offerings, including paint supplies and paint. There's always someone available to mix colors and prepare your paint. You can actually browse paint colors on their website, which may be helpful for getting ideas before your visit. Parking is easy and free - they have a complimentary parking lot in the back. Simply drive into their driveway and you'll see it. read more

Summer 2025 I had a very specific need for one item. I called Masters; the gentleman who answered put me on a brief hold to confirm that they had the item and at what price. I checked with Home Depot - they had the same item for $3 less. I'm 2 miles from Masters and 6 miles from HD - for me, 4 miles closer is worth paying $3 more. Masters had the product when I arrived; checkout was quick and friendly. Tips: I parked on the street; their parking is way in the back and can't be seen from the street. My car doesn't like that. So rude, didn't even make it IN the store I parked next to the only visible paint line in the lot. Employee appears, angry, gesturing for me to turn my car sideways. He flipped his hand at me with the air of one who has told someone very stupid to do the same thing 10x. I look to him for further instruction, he turns on his heel angrily and storms inside, shaking his head, so I turned around, peeled out and went to Home Depot instead of giving money to a local Altadena business. I found what I needed which is great.. every single employee here is straight up rude and I felt like every step I took throughout this store I was being watched as if I was about to steal something. As soon as I walk in I'm getting followed by older Hispanic lady and she's asking "are you even looking for anything?" And it caught me so off guard because what else would I be doing and I said yes actually I am and let her know what items I needed and she scoffs at me and walks away saying "well if you need help let me know!!!" And I was confused again because I DID ask her for help so once again I go ask her if she can direct me in the way of these items and she sends me downstairs where I ask the knife guy for directions because I feel like I've gone the wrong way now and this man looks at me dead in the face and says "THIS IS KNIFE SHARPENING WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE!! If you're not here to sharpen your knives then why are you here" like geez it's not that hard to just kindly redirect me! I was thinking about leaving and just not buying anything at this point because of how I've been treated but I live pretty close and I was working on a last minute project so I had no choice but to buy items here. Masters has been here since the 70's, and back in those days there were no big box hardware stores. Actually, it was bustling back then even though there were a number of competitors. Altadena Hardware, another on Lincoln, and the biggest hardware store around, Ole's where there is now an OSH. Yep. We're talkin' Old School. So, back then, it was run and owned by a nice Jewish guy and his hardworking, and precocious, son. Both wearing yamakas. Both super friendly. Both meticulous. Ahh. How things have changed. The inside hasn't changed much. Actually, I don't think that it has been cleaned since the 70's. Everything has a look to it that seems aged. A bit like the product has been on the shelves for a dozen years. I half expect the price tags to have layers, piled high like years of license plate tags on old cars. The service is interesting. Most of the helpers seem like they are locals who live within walking distance. They're all nice. In a pinch, Master's will save that drive to one of the big box stores. They have some mid grade lumber, mid grade plumbing, mid grade tools, even mid grade snacks. It's a bit of history for sure, but I only go there when Altadena Hardware doesn't have what I'm looking for. read more

I went in looking for a #2 x 8" screwdriver, they didn't have it. As the employee was trying in got help me he suggested I go on their website & order it, I need it now, I don't want to wait 5 days until Wednesday, the job can't wait that long. I guess most people don't review hardware stores. This place has been here forever and only 1 review. Since I got nothing to do, I will review it. Personally, I like the place. It's like an old mom and pops store. It's not clean and nice like chain stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot or OSH, but it has everything a normal person like myself need from a hardware store. Granted, the place is a bit of a mess, and things are just kinda everywhere, but if you ask, you'll find what you need. One thing I have to mention is that I was looking for pure ammonia for my fish tank, and I've nearly given up after going to 10 other stores. This is the one place that has it. Ace Hardware is not like Home Depot or Lowe's, they're a specialty hardware store that offers good customer service and hard to find items. Yes, they do offer a small selection of lumber, but that's where the big box stores excel. All the products are newly stored on the shelves and easy to find, but there's constantly staff members walking around ready to assist you. The parking lot is behind the building, but people tend to park along the side of the building blocking driveway and store entrance. read more

I thought this was an ACE Hardware chain when I drove past it. I was looking for a tube of Terro Ant Killer and thought it would be like Mission Hardware in Alhambra, CA. I went in and it was a small, murky store that looked very disorganized. A young worker who was sitting on a bench was looking at his cell phone and asked if I needed help. I thought that was nice that he was asking and working on what I presume was his break (though if they had a HR that probably wouldn't go over so well). No smiles or friendly greetings, which I don't expect from hardware stores since nobody ever looks like they want to be there. He directed me to aisle one, and I found what I was looking for. Upon closer inspection, I noticed they had four boxes and each one had LAYERS of dust on it. One package was so outdated that it was in a white box instead of orange. I opened the box to inspect the product: instead of clear, the liquid was amber. I knew the product was supposed to be clear, and inferred from the thick dust on the outer packaging that the product aged and has been sitting there for years. Who knows if it would still work? I contemplated buying it, and an older gentleman who worked there approached me and started asking if I needed any help. I felt like he wanted to usher me out since the store was going to close in 15 minutes. I declined, and he kept pressuring me so I put the product back on the shelf. He looked at it and said it was "only $3.99" and asked if I had "$3.99." I assume he only wanted to help, but I shouldn't be pressured to buy a product that might not work, has changed color, and has been collecting dust. Most of all, I shouldn't feel like I have to buy something and that I am too cheap to do so. I promptly walked out, went to OSH Hardware (where the service isn't any better), found tons of the product on shelf, in a NEW package, the liquid was clear, at $2.99, and with a 15% coupon. I know supporting local businesses is supposed to be good for the community, but it's experiences like this that makes me turn to big box stores. read more

Their OSB plywood is cheaper than Home Depot or Lowe's right now. The rest of the lumber is quite competitive as well. They will even deliver lumber the next morning. Delivery charge to Altadena addresses is cheaper than Home Depot as well. Pleasantly surprised. read more

I was shopping at this hardware store with my Father when I was a kid 40 years ago and I remember the service back then was great! I've been there a few more tines in the past three years and the service is just the same if not better! I've been going to this Hardware Store for many years. And the reason is because it is incredibly well managed and the staff well trained. In fact, I seldom actually "shop" because the moment I walk in the front door, I am greeted, asked what I need help with, and immediately taken to item I need. This place is downright creepy. Prices are high, product lines are limited, and most of the products are covered in dust. They are out of stock of many things. Also they claim to be and ACE hardware when they are really not one. Customer service is not great either. They do have some products. I purchased some washer hoses which started leaking after 6 months. Also bought some cheap paint brushes. But save your time, and drive north a few blocks to the ACE on Mariposa. Totally worth the extra drive. There is awesome customer service up there! read more

I asked Leonard and he simply told me, "We don't sell anything cheap!" and that I would have to go elsewhere. My first thought was to say, "You're Right! and I see that from your lack of interest to drum up sales"! I had forgotten the 1st occasion and went in again (on 9/11/14 ironically) and he stated "I do not like this Country", when I requested an American flag key blank to be used to differentiate it from the numerous keys I possess. I was civil and instead of telling him to crawl back to whatever 3rd world cesspool he emerged from, I thanked him and confronted him diplomatically (the key machine was left standing anyway) He then retreated into some pseudo Religious b.s. about Heaven being his only Country. Will Friday July 20, 2018, I go in to make a purchase, the older Black gentleman helped me, he's was polite. So when I get to the register, a older white clerk, tries to tell me how to say hello the proper way. First off all, not everyone speaks the same, and my thing is who the hell is he to correct me. Last the machine told me to pull my card out, and as I was putting it away, he goes what are you doing like he was talking to a child. There is always someone there to help me immediately and while the parking lot is small front and back there has never been a time when I couldn't park. It is a neighborhood friendly place. This my second and last time going to this store. The manager (or owner) will not go out of this way to help. He wouldn't allow me to enter the storage to look at different cements but insisted I use the one he chose (he was right, but as a novice, I wanted to see what the differences were in different bags). Also, He wouldn't mix any paint I bought, telling me to do so would make a mess. Me and my buddy were installing an AC unit in his room, in what was one of the hottest days of summer. We had already gone to a hardware store before coming here, but we had messed up on some measurements. The day was unbearable, and I have to admit I was feeling a little agitated cause of the heat, and an injury I got while trying to install the AC. We decided to take a short drive to Ace instead of going out of our way towards the other hardware store, and oh man we should have just came here first. There was this one employee (Jesus) who just went out of his way to help us. He was really nice, helpful, and kind. On top of all that he offered us bottled water. He said he knew how hot it was out. A particular type and size of drywall screw was required for a project on my house. Instead of driving around, I chose to call first -- and I was told that the item was available at Masters. When I arrived, not 15 minutes later, the item was NOT available and not only did no one admit to having spoken with me on the phone, no one seemed concerned about remedying the situation .
