Terra cotta pots
Megan R.

Love an old school hardware store and absolutely love Altadena Hardware. Their customer service is unmet and the products they sell are high quality. It's also *way* less packed than a big box hardware store (I actually saw the line outside Home Depot over the weekend and turned my car right around) which is more important than ever during the time of COVID-19. Hardware stores are considered an essential business and I'm extra happy to support anything small and local these days! Yesterday I was in for a couple specific things (potting soil, terra cotta planters, and outdoor window cleaner). There are some awesome soils on the sales floor (really good Fox Farm stuff, if you're into that sort of thing!) and one of the associates saw me perusing the selection. They asked if I was finding everything I needed and I told them I was looking for cactus soil, so they grabbed a set of keys and led me out to their nursery. WHO EVEN KNOW THIS WAS HERE? It's out behind the store and seriously amazing. So many succulents, cacti, small planters, even macrame plant hangers...it's a total dream. The guy who helped me let me know that if I ever just need to access the nursery, just ring the bell outside and someone will come open it. I found everything I needed and someone even helped me carry the big bag of soil to my car. Parking is easy on the street and this whole little section of Altadena is charming--kind of reminds me of where I grew up in the Midwest. Highly suggest Altadena Hardware for any of your upcoming home improvement or gardening projects!

But whenever I need…read moresomething that is hardware related I think of Tritch, particularly if it's a hard to find item, because typically if they don't carry it, they can tell me where to find it. I just had a security screen installed over our front door, so this mean having locks rekeyed so that the security screen door and the front door could be opened using one key. Because I have a large extended family, I needed 10 copies of the house key made. This wasn't a specialty key, just a standard off the shelf Kwikset key. I went to the KeyMe vending machine at our local Albertsons supermarket. Their cost was $11 per key. There was a special offer in which if you had the machine duplicate two keys, it would throw in a third for free. I was tempted to just get my 10 keys made then and there in order to save time, but then I remembered Tritch Hardware in Eagle Rock. I went into the store today, and they were able to cut the 10 keys while I waited, for less than the cost of 3 keys at the Key Me machine. I can't say enough good things about the staff at Tritch.

They are dishonest. Cons: most products on the shelves are defective returns. I made the mistake of not checking if a product is a return and sure enough the product was defective, had been returned, and they just placed it back on the shelves knowing some unlucky person would get stuck with it. Their return policy is aware of this because they make their returns a very uncomfortable process. I was questioned by the store and treated like a criminal for trying to do an exchange, not even a return. There are so, so many options nearby for all sorts of home improvements solutions. Nearby we have independent business for Nurseries, floor, roofing, Kitchen, lighting, and they're not using their business as a staging ground for ICE. Home Depot parking lot is a flock camera station. I am grateful I never have to return to this awful place again.

Three locations: Cypress, San Gabriel and my favorite, Altadena. They stock the best brands in the landscape trade...Rainbird, Hunter, Toro, Netafim, etc. The store has everything possible for irrigation installation & repair, plus kickass hand tools for serious garden work, a good variety of beautiful, quality landscape lighting, plus benderboard, fertilizers, potting soil, bagged mulch and fountain pumps and more. The retail prices are good, cheaper than local hardware stores. Plus the parts will last so you won't be replacing them soon and using up all your time, money & resources. The store is in a smallish, white industrial building, kind of hidden, on Woodbury & Windsor in Altadena. It's clean, organized, well-lit and doesn't smell all rubbery or dieselly like other landscape stores. If you have a vague grasp of how to approach your irrigation issues this is a fantastic resource. Check in at the front counter for quick assistance or wander if you want to see the latest drip irrigation parts. Some stuff is behind the counter, so not completely self-serve, which is a really great old-school touch. The guys will help you troubleshoot & will help you find the parts you need. They offer occassional bi-lingual free instruction classes in irrigation controller clocks, lighting installation and it's not just product reps selling their brand but actual trouble shooting & instruction. This is a real service which homeowners & DIYers should get on! If you want to geek out with manufacturers catalogues, ask for a complimentary copy. Kinda like reading the tool section of the ginormous old Sears catalogue (yeah, that was a thing kids did in the 60s). The manufacturers provide these catalogues to wholesalers and they are great to share with clients or use as your own textbook. So ask for some! I love this store. The guys who work here are so smart & well-trained. They know their stuff & can help you save water & save time. Thanks for being here, J Harold Mitchell Landscape Supply!

I purchased 20 wire nuts and 20 feet of outdoor lighting wire and the total cost was $61.98. At Home Depot the same materials would have cost $23. If that wasn't bad enough, the staff was unfriendly and unhelpful and when I checked the receipt at home, they had charged me for 10 ga wire instead of the cheaper 16 ga wire that I received. If you are not a contractor, stay far away from this place.

If you are lucky and can find what you're looking for, comes another terrible experience at the cashier. They insist very rudely to sign you up for their member rewards points. We don't find any value in signing up for rewards points at every single business we go to, whether it's the hardware store or Boba Tea. We already had to return a few defective items and they make a big problem out of defective returns when we're not signed up for their reward program even when the item is just $5. They are very invasive in the type of documentation they ask their customers. It's just a screwdriver??? Why do you need my phone number and driver license??? No.
