I come here at least once a month, and occasionally a couple of times each weekend. The store has a huge selection of really practical things for household repairs, and a large assortment of specialized fasteners that help me maintain my vintage European cars. The store is also well staffed with knowledgable people, which is extremely rare these days when so many specialty stores hire people who only trained in "retail sales" but who actually know nothing about what they are selling. This is a good hardware store when you're in a pinch and need something quick. We don't have a home depot yet in Pasadena, which is about 30% cheaper than anything in this store but if you need it now it's worth getting here. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly and always willing to help. But my grievance is with the policy of giving the employees bottles of plastic water and then using that water in plastic bottles to water plants. In this climate crisis using plastic bottles is so selfish and careless. As a hardware store, installing a water tap seems fundamental instead of wasting hundreds of plastic bottles every month. When I asked the clerk about the policy she said they only use plastic bottles that were opened and left, so she admits it's wasteful to just open bottles and not drink the contents. So they use it on plants instead. They sell reusable water bottles and watering cans yet use plastic water bottles for their employees and plants in the nursery. Bad form. read more

This place is a pleasant hidden gem in a sparse area for handy stuff for fixing up around the house. We were immediately met with smiles and pleasant support! We were so blown away by the customer care and support. We came in not knowing what type of fastener we needed and the handsome (lol) handyman helped us with what we needed. Didn't feel talked down to (usually what happens when at a Home Depot) We go to check out and the lovely women smiled as we complemented the service. I have lived around the corner from here since 2005 and anytime I need something I just walk over. Competitive prices, friendly / knowledgeable staff and just about anything you'd need (even a lawn mower). This is literally main street Mayberry and you can just park right at the front door. A number of other businesses you can walk to from here also: grocery store, liquor store, barber shop, pharmacy, dry cleaner, State Farm agent, etc....... Forget driving to "the big box store" when you can shop locally with a staff that actually knows what they're doing. read more

Small hardware store but perfect for us locals. Beats going to Home Depot! I'm a huge believer in supporting local, small owned businesses especially now during such hard times. Staff is also very helpful. They also carry the Yeti brand. I bought a couple Yeti pieces as Father's Day gifts. If you need help/information the staff is more than willing to help. With COVID there may be a line to get in the store. They also have a rewards program you can join if you'd like. Parking is shared with other businesses but it typically isn't an issue finding parking. Altadena Hardware is independently owned however, they are part of the True Value family. Altadena hardware has always carried everything I need which saves me a trip to HD in Glendale. You pay a little more but nothing to get upset about. However, their LUMBER IS TERRIBLE!!! I bought 2x4's and they were all crooked and warped - they claim they brought me "better ones" from the back. Yikes! Other than their lumber, all the employees are helpful and do their best to find what you need. read more

Really excellent hardware store. Knowledgeable and helpful people greet you immediately as you come through the door and are constantly on-hand to help you find what you need. It's surprisingly big in there, too, which you wouldn't imagine from the footprint of the storefront facing out on Mariposa. In any case, lots of help, very fair prices, and was able to get everything I needed (pass-through socket wrench, house letters, a 2"x6" cut to a few specified lengths, a few drill bits, bolts, washers, stop nuts, and some C-clamps) inside of half an hour. Always feels great to support a local, non "big box" store without feeling like you sacrificed anything by way of price or selection of inventory. Big thumbs up to you guys! read more

I have been to this store many times and spent a lot of money there.. The people are great, almost too friendly. You can't quietly sneak in and buy your light bulb without having been asked 20 times if you need help finding them.. I stopped in because I needed 1 bolt. Thanks to the eager guy in hardware,I found it really quickly. When I got to the cash register, it was 88 cents. Unfortunately I had no cash, so I whipped out my plastic, only to be told very curtly that they do not take cards for small transactions like this. At fist, I thought "Fine.. I'll just go pick out a light bulb or something.." But then, it started bugging me.. What happened to customer service? Yes, I know that it costs money to do card sales. Businesses invest in things to get my money. They buy flyers that fill my mailbox. They buy adds that fill my newspaper. But for some reason, they do not see that transaction fee as an investment, knowing that I would be back returning that investment many times over with diamond edged saw blades and other crazy things. It really bothered me. I decided to spend my 88 cents elsewhere. I went to Home Depot and bought my bolt. They took the card without batting an eyelash.. read more

Just had a super awesome experience at this hardware store. I'm not from the area so it's my first time in. The store is very clean and organized, like OCD level organized. Totally rang my chimes! Staff was super awesome, too. Very helpful and eager to be so! I have a True Value near where I actually do live and I get the same feeling when I go to that store as well. Ive bee coming here to get key copies for a while now after my other place would screw up every other time. I do not make a lot of key copies but when I do this place has competitive pricing and has never failed to work on a lock. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and unlike some places, they have a lot of staff members in the store, so there is always someone who is able to help you rather than having to hunt someone down, or to wait a long time for your turn to be helped out. This is the best hardware store. I have a fix-it list of close to 700 items on my new house in Altadena, so I come here at least once a week. The prices are comparable to anywhere else, as it is Tru-value affiliated, but the service just sets it apart. It restores my faith in humanity. I love this hardware store! It's got that small town charm & always full of helpful/knowledgable staff. They even carry Yeti! For a smaller store it certainly has a huge selection of the coolers and tumblers including accessories. They were sold out of one of the spout lids we wanted and the guy there got our name and number down, 10 days later he called without fail and had 2 of them set aside for us. Went back a few days later to buy one for a friend and we got the last one. Apparently they sell out of this specific accessory fast! We've bought soil here, plants, welcome mats, toilet seats, citronella candles, you name it. They have pretty much anything you can think of & I'll continue to shop here anytime I need it. read more

I shop here quite often and typically receive great service. However, I dealt with the owner, Jimmy, for the first time today. Over the past weekend, I purchased several gallons of paint as well as a paint primer and TSP to clean the walls prior. My professional painter could not get the primer to stick to the walls. Though I rinsed the Walls Right after using the TSP to clean them, The owner said I must not have done a good job rinsing because that's why the primer would not stick. I told him that the TSP directions did not state you have to rent the walls even though I did. He argued with me, until I showed him in the store on the bottle, that the directions specifically did not state you have to rinse. In fact the label says you don't have to rinse. Then he claimed that they tell all their customers when they buy it to rinse the walls. I told him nobody in the store when I purchased it told me to rent it. He then said, "well we only tell you if you ask for help with the TSP". I told him that I did ask for help with the TSP and again nobody told me to rinse it. I felt the way he spoke to me was very unprofessional and was argumentative and he would not admit that I was correct even when I showed him the facts that were plainly written in black-and-white. He kept changing his story when the narrative didn't fit the situation. He only agreed to give me a store credit for the primer I brought to return. It's sad but I don't want to shop there anymore. the employees are awesome; unfortunately the owner isn't. read more
