This Independence Day, we decided that we wanted to start the celebrate by starting today in one of the best ways possible - with cocktails by the water! So naturally, "Alcove" on the West End's Lovejoy Wharf was the perfect locale to do this! Hidden a little off the beaten path, the serene Restaurant prides itself on its New England Coastal inspired vibes, and they read perfectly when we sat down on their extensive outdoor patio! Though we ostensibly came for "brunch", since the holiday happened to Fall on a Monday, we ended up enjoying their lunch menu! And, as we were celebrating, we had to start by exploring their cocktail menu: STRONG ARM Privateer Navy Yard TSG Select Rum, Bully Boy Amaro, & Dolin Rouge! SEAFARER Hendrick's Neptunia Gin, Lemongrass, Benedictine, & Lime! SUMMER VIBES Absolut Elyx Vodka, Pineapple, Coconut, Anise, & Citrus! We loved that each of the options were well-crafted to serve their purpose - to be sipped alongside beautiful ocean views! Especially the 'Summer Vibes' cocktail, which would be perfect for any beachside resort! However, it wouldn't be brunch without some all-important bites! There's the old adage that "Brunch is the most important gay meal of the day!" So there was no shock when we had to opportunity to have our first brunch back in Boston, we took advantage! "Alcove" styles itself as a New England neighborhood restaurant, and you can see that from the number of regional classics on the menu! However, we loved the unique creations that are also dotted throughout, from which we tried the: SAFFRON ARANCINI with Fontina, & Roasted Tomato Sauce! LA QUERCIA PROSCIUTTO BITE with Mozzarella House Stracciatella, & Whole Wheat Fried Dough! Both were excellent small bites to get the meal going, but specifically the 'Saffron Arancini' is a must-have offering from this restaurant! We could've eaten a whole meal of them! However, our entrées were still to come: IMPOSSIBLE BURGER with Cheddar, & Sweet Chili Aïoli! ROASTED SPRING-DUG PARSNIPS with Parsley Pesto! GRILLED CHICKEN SANDWICH with Citrus Barbecue, Pickled Red Onion, & Sourdough! Kell has had a number of Impossible Burgers over the years, and we have to say that "Alcove" provides one of the best! The parsnips were also a unique offering - but we will say that meals alone come with plenty of food, that you can leave the sides for when you visit for dinner! Alcove blew me away! Beautiful, fancy, trendy, and cheap! We initially stumbled in here after a Bruins game for some late night drinks (although...not too late night because last call was 11PM wtf Boston?!) and we were blown away by the delicious-ness and quality of drinks and the price. My husband and I then returned for a date night and had another enjoyable experience. He is in love with their old fashioned's for $11 they are truly a steal (they could honestly charge much more and I wouldn't be mad). The Rose Sangria ($12) was delicious and I also enjoyed trying some wine here (Baytown Sauvignon Blanc-$12). Service was a little slow the second time around (but they were packed) but the bus-boy was stellar and really picked up where the waiter was lacking. I stopped in here for dinner and a drink when the brewery down the way was completely booked out for several hours. I sat at the bar and ordered the fish tacos - they were pretty good. Nothing extraordinary nor something that I would go out of my way to order again. I'm not sure what kind of fish it was, is it wasn't listed on the menu. I never come here because I WANT to. I come here because I work near here and it's the only place to go. This is the fifth time I have gone with my work group and the service sucks so hard. Went here before the Bruins game yesterday, had a 515 reservation, got seated on time. Our server was Juan Carlos who warned us it was busy, understandably so with the game that night. I want to preface that I went on a lovely Saturday night but it was WINDY! Started with a pitcher of sangria split between two (good enough for four glasses) and their lobster dip with everything bagel crisps ($13). Sangria was great - nicely boozy. The bagel crisps were actually pieces of a fairly burnt everything bagel - I would've preferred some sort of an actual cracker.... definitely would try a different app going forward. I'm not gonna lie I was still hungry after finishing my dish ~fancier restaurant type portions~ Our night ended rather strangely.... after our server coming over approximately every 5-10 minutes during our 90 minute dining experience, when it was time for us to get our check it took us about 20 minutes to actually get the bill and that was after going up to him. I had also asked him for a validated parking ticket for parking right nearby - he gave me the wrong sticker designated for during Bruins or Celtics games - so I ended up paying $35 for parking instead of the $14 that was advertised, bummer. Incredibly inventive and unique menu and beautiful decor make for a wonderful evening! Good thing we came with a group, because I wanted to try a little bit of everything! My absolute favorites were the lemon pasta with morels (special of the day) and the Spanish octopus. The prosciutto plate with stracciatella (like burrata but...more) was also incredible! The salmon tartare and cauliflower dishes were also good, but not as impressive as the others. The lobster salad had too little lobster I my opinion. The words that come to mind with this place are sleek. We came here to meet family after a fun evening of walking around downtown. Our reservation was at 8:45 pm and we arrived exactly on time. Unfortunately, our table was not ready and the waitstaff seemed unprepared but we didn't mind too much as it was a 10 party reservation. They comped our drinks which was very kind, and I had the one with a dolphin in it. It was amazing, the best drink I've ever had (which is awesome because I think this place moonlights as a cocktail bar). My boyfriend ordered the yellow whiskey/manhattan drink that also looked really good. After about thirty minutes we were seated at a corner table and were comfortably perusing the menu. We ordered two bottles of wine for table and several rounds of appetizers such as the squid ink pasta (amazing, definitely get this) and multiple plates of crude, which I was less interested in trying but heard rave reviews throughout the table. I ordered the sea bream and boyfriend ordered the chicken. I honestly wish so much that I ordered the roast chicken because it was AMAZING. I cannot rave about this dish enough. I will be back just for it. It was beautifully seasoned and had so much flavor, was juicy, and paired deliciously with the garlic rice. I basically ate his entire dish. The sea bream was also really good, but not as good as the chicken. It was juicy and paired nicely with the wine, but was not as well seasoned as the chicken. I arrived without a reservation at 8pm on a Tuesday night and was immediately seated on their back patio amidst a bubbly array of happy guests. Chef Chuck is truly outdoing himself in the kitchen for, when I tell you, not one person in site was disappointed by the meals put before them. Fresh oysters from the raw bar are served with lemon, vinegar, cocktail sauce, and a cucumber mint medley that I finished with the spoon following the appetizer due to its incredible flavor and aroma. The summer vibes cocktail, served in a tall pineapple glass, is a sweet and enticing beverage that was the perfect starter as the sun began to set and a colorful sky began to transition before my eyes. Their Bavette Steak was cooked to medium rare perfection, accompanied by a red wine jus that made me dip again and again. I upgraded the included steak fries to their crispy smashed potatoes that rounded out the dish to my liking- crisp, delectable, and paired lovingly with the jus. I was blown away by the San Daniele prosciutto bites, these you MUST NOT miss! A sweet pastry folded over their cheese blend topped with savory prosciutto and additional whipped cheese were as visually appealing as they were mouth water-ingly epic. I cheered the Zakim bridge in plain site with my Zakim cocktail which was the perfect compliment to my steak. To close, their petite treats included sugar cookies, chocolates, and cheese cake bites that were all complimented by my espresso martini. Took significant effort to cut with the knif. The dressing was the biggest disappointment. My serving was over baked, and very crispy. It had the consistency of croutons. Tried the clam "ceviche" which turned out to be massive strands of clam all connected like pappardelle pasta. Nothing even close to what a ceviche is. The lobster dip was ok if you like lobster but the portion size was very small for the price and they provided overly toasted bagels as a dipping apparatus( why?) which proved to be super hazardous to the roof of your mouth. It was like eating dip with shards of glass. We also tried the grilled cheese because it has to be good if it's on the menu right ?! Wrong. Super hard bread and way too much cheese that congealed before getting to the table. The "blackened" fish taco was ok but they placed a small piece of fish in a giant tortilla. Either more fish or less tortilla? Idk. The service was great though. Our waiter was super knowledgeable of the menu and wasn't overbearing. The drinks weren't bad either. Finally experienced Alcove for brunch as well as dinner now, and was just as impressed as the first time I visited. The restaurant is a classy, yet casual scene in an ideal location along Lovejoy Wharf. The inside of the restaurant is stunning, but the outdoor seating is perfect for this time of the year overlooking the water and the Zakim bridge (which is an especially great view at sunset!). I particular love how they organize their menu selections, which have been updated every time I've visited. From the apps to the snacks to the main dishes to the sides, you can get the perfect amount of food for your level of hunger, or just try a variety of the delicious dishes they offer. The scallops & pork belly dish was a major miss; the scallops were fishy, the dried apple slices added a weird textural component, and the quinoa was overcooked. Presentation was also pretty sloppy too (see photo). For a restaurant focused on coastal food, this dish should have been a highlight. Service could have been smoother. There was a change in servers mid-dinner, but it was not communicated, which led to some confusion. Our side order of fries arrived after we had all finished dinner. They do have a rotating menu, so it's always a new experience whenever I come back. The dishes definitely won't disappoint though. Cocktails: so innovative and also rotates with the menu. This was both misleading and disappointing as I am someone who heavily researches a menu beforehand, also because I was really looking forward to trying the sticky bun only to find out it did not exist. Nice place I could see myself going back to if I lived in Boston. I'd never been to the Lovejoy Wharf before, a pretty area near the TD Stadium, on the water. The place is nice and open and airy, as a "restaurant on the water" should be. I had the Lone Pine Brightside IPA, very appropriate name as it was a bright IPA with the right hop west coast bitterness that I like, but not too dank. We ate at Alcove last night before going to Disney on Ice. It was probably the best dining experience I have had in YEARS! Our server was great, the restaurant was so clean, the food was AMAZING, and the playlist was probably the best ever! It was myself, my wife, and our 8 year old. If you have kids you know finding a good restaurant that makes everyone happy is almost impossible. This place did it for us. We got these delicious prosciutto appetizers ( SAN DANIELE PROSCIUTTO BITE ) FORMAGGIO KITCHEN CHEESE PLATE , the bolognese, a cheeseburger, and a kids Mac n cheese. For dessert we got the churros. The food was good, not great, and the server was friendly and attentive, but the bill came with a "kitchen appreciation" charge. This is a scam that is showing up in some places that I cannot accept. My husband loves bridges, so tonight I surprised him with dinner at Alcove. We had an absolutely delicious meal with a stunning view of Zakim Bridge. We started off with two amazing cocktails, Wharf Life and Mandelbrot Effect. I had the grilled squid which was incredible and the half chicken which did not disappoint. My husband had the chips with onion dip to start and a gourmet bacon cheeseburger, which he absolutely loved. We ended it with lattes and the chocolate pate which was simply divine. Really disappointed with our brunch here, while the service and setting were both very nice, the food was a complete letdown. The furlong crab bisque to start and coffee were both very good, but that's where the good vibes ended. The Hake was cooked well, but tasteless and and so very under-seasoned. It was served over bland giant white beans with raisins, which were also under-seasoned ... confusing and forgettable, it tasted like the color beige. Then the fish tacos had quite good flavor, and while one taco had a very nice piece of fish, the second was so chewy and rubbery that I didn't finish it. I have never had a piece of fish that I couldn't bite through or pull apart with my fork and knife easily. Juvenile and a bit leg-less. Alcove warms you up with thoughtful and curated industrial-chic aesthetics, but falls flat on delivering food as delicious as the visual aspects of the restaurant. The restaurant on the water is Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli's first restaurant as an owner, which affords the critically inclined time to be impressed. If you are the aesthetic-seeking, 'gram-posting type, and not a "foodie" type, this place is probably for you. As a guest with a palate for something unique and entertaining, consider not dining here. Instead, treat yourself to something with a record for good flavor. Yesterday was our first time dining out since Covid 19, and I'm so glad we went to Alcove! It was the best way to ease back in to a social climate with comfort. We also had our toddler with us as well another family that was seated next to us- and all was well! -the host and waiter were friendly and nice -everything was organized and timely -the outdoor seating area was clean, well spaced and comfortable(the bathrooms were also clean). -the waterfront view was amazing! -And the drinks and food was delicious!
