You will not leave hungry from Al's. We stopped by Al Smith's for breakfast this morning. Al's is clean diner located in a strip mall. We seated promptly. The waitress was friendly and accommodating. I ordered Al's breakfast special, 3 eggs of choice, 3 bacon or 3 sausage or ham, hash browns, side of homemade sausage gravy and biscuit or toast. The country gravy had a hint of sage that surprised me. Not my favorite but I did eat all of it. Thank you for the enjoyable breakfast. read more

It was fine. Got the grilled chicken sandwich and fries. The chicken was pounded thin - a good thing for a sandwich, imho, because it's easier to eat, gets cooked evenly, and soaks up spices and what-have-you more nicely (nicelier?). But it was, to me, kind of bland, as were the tomatoes and even the onion. Not bad, but when mild mayonnaise dominates the sandwich, it ain't my thing. But I'm a hot sauce enjoyer. To each their own. The fries were a bit better, lightly crisp flour-covered things, but again: kind of unexciting without ketchup. They were fine. The store's decor was mostly mom-n-pop nice, attractive and probably comfortable (I did takeout). The carpet was worn and maybe a bit grimy. I'm thinking that's because of the breakfast and lunch crowd the restaurant attracts, many of whom have been working hard at jobs that get their shoes dirty. No points off for that. Service was friendly and efficient. Prices were good, and the portion they served me was just right for a hungry driver. Parking was easy and the store was easy to find and get to. Overall: fine. Checked this place out on my last visit to the area. It was clean but seemed a little outdated decor wise. The food was alright but nothing really stood out for that meal. I'd go back if ever in the area and looking for diner style food. The waitress was wonderful, kind, and patient. It was a pleasant dining experience overall. read more

I went to Al Smith's on a Saturday morning around 10. It was moderately busy, we only had to wait a few minutes for a table as I with 4 others. Friendly service. I ordered the French toast breakfast with sausage & two scrambled eggs with cheese. I also preferred a side of hash browns (I apologize for not capturing a photo before the ketchup AND these hash browns do not require to be smothered in ketchup, that's just what I was in the mood for). While the French toast was a little crisp around the edges their mix for the batter was great & I would absolutely order it again. The eggs were great (which might seem like an easy win but imo that's not always the case). Lastly, of course I had to order the cheesecake to go! It was very fresh & I appreciated their homemade recipe. It makes sense why the cheesecake was selling so quickly by 10:30 am!! I'll definitely be back! read more

The food was very delicious! We didn't wait long for it to be served! The Hot Mess is what is pictured it was everything but the kitchen sink. Very tasty. This is a meal where you can't add anything, but can take anything off. It was a very big meal, but each bite was amazing! The service here was impecable! Our server was so sweet. We only waited a few minutes to be seated on a Sunday around 11am. All around a hole in the wall "mom and pop" vibe of a breakfast spot. Would recommend to everyone. read more

I recently visited Al Smith's for Brunch and found it a disappointment. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered Croissant French Toast, bacon and hot tea. The server advised me that they did not serve hot tea. The French Toast was flavorless and dry. I ordered coffee, but only because the restaurant did not serve hot tea. The fact that hot tea was not on the menu is problematic. How can a restaurant be labeled as a "Breakfast Place," if hot tea is not available? This was my first time eating a Al Smith in over fifteen years. I used to have breakfast at Al Smith's Place two or three times each month. At that time, the food was good and hot tea was on the menu. I do not plan on returning to this restaurant. read more

My first time here after wanting to come here for many years. It was after 3:00 in the afternoon I decided instead of a lunch I would have the breakfast which I was not disappointed in fact it was a lot of food I'm picky about my bacon the bacon was perfectly cooked crispy the eggs sunny side up were perfect the sausage gravy over biscuits was very delicious I am picky about my hash browns they could have been browned a little bit more but overall I was satisfied I would give it a five-star but everywhere I looked on the floor it was dirty it needed to be swept it did not look good at all the floor walking back to the bathroom area and the bathroom floor was all sticky I don't know from what but it was very kind of off-putting other than that I will be back hopefully next time I come back the place will be a little cleaner! A friend shared how much she enjoyed this restaurant so I stopped by to check it out. I decided to get takeout and chose the Club sandwich. I was very happy with my choice it was excellent except missing a pickle. Service was friendly and prompt. This place is a hidden gem. Nice little place with a pleasant staff. My club sandwich was excellent and felt to be more for my value than I've had at other establishments in the past few years. As I arrived to the Red Roof Inn Toledo University on a casual Friday night in August 2019, I noticed a small little strip mall next door to the hotel. As it turned out, my friend and I came here for breakfast the next morning. You could possibly assume that this diner possibly gets its share of customers from the nearby hotels, probably more from Red Roof Inn, since it's basically next door. With that said, I felt like Al Smith's Place is a cozy diner that is a scaled back Denny's or IHOP that is open all day and you can get breakfast and lunch whenever you want. The service was good, friendly, and quite fast. We arrived around 9am on a Saturday morning. It was quite nice to be able to sit here next door and not have to drive anywhere. I pretty much ordered the omlette, which came with potatoes and a biscuit of some kind. I also ordered a glass of pepsi and a water. My friend ordered a custom made breakfast, which came with pancakes and other stuff I can't remember. I remember that the menu was extensive, having breakfast items on one end and lunch items on the next. You probably could eat here all day and have something different on the menu. The ambiance was pretty nice and quiet. Casual breakfast in Sylvania, OH is what I am all about that weekend for sure. It was cool to have it next door to the hotel. We ended up driving here from the hotel, since we didn't want to walk it from the room. Too lazy. The overall experience here at Al Smith's Place was pretty good, comfortable, and quite nice. We got a table in the back of the restaurant and even some of the customers complimented me about my T-shirt (50 states marathons finisher). It was definitely worth wearing it on the daily. I though that the omlette was good, although I had to have some A-1 steak sauce on it just for texture and flavor. The potatoes were good and really didn't care for the biscuit too much. I ended up having those pancakes that my friend didn't want, since she had the other items during our stay here at Al Smith's Place. Al Smith's Place is located at 3350 Executive Parkway in Toledo, OH. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing. There is private parking here for y'all to park here, since it is a small little strip mall. Not sure about the public transportation in Toledo, OH to get here, but best bet would be a private vehicle or Uber or Lyft. They'd be glad to give you a ride here. Truth be told, I felt like this place can be like anywhere in the USA, which explains my rating. While the food was delicious and the service was friendly and good, it was just good and yet okay at the same time. For the most part though, the experience here was aforementioned pretty good. The restaurant itself was clean and quite organized as it should be. I was surprised when I checked in on my yelp app to find a 10% off coupon to use on my meal. We ended up buying extra stuff to meet the criteria for the discount. I wouldn't say that this place is a hidden gem, but a nice place to go and check out for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner, if you're in the Toledo / Sylvania area of Ohio. The prices here weren't expensive, but on par with many of the other restaurants I've been to where breakfast and lunch is served. Breakfast for two can run you close to $20 with gratuity and tax. I'd recommend checking this place out, if you're in the area. While it's nice to have being next door to the Red Roof Inn, I probably would eat here again, if I was staying next door at the hotel. Food is good, but the experience was just okay. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 3.5 stars for the service. 5.0 stars for the yelp check in offer. 4.0 stars for the food. I was quite impressed with this little place. My wife and I decided to give it a try for dinner because there was a Yelp check-in special plus a Yelp cash-back deal. We had noticed this establishment a few times in the past but this was the first time to visit. Their location is within a relatively small strip plaza in a fragmented commercial stretch on the west side of Secor just north of Elder-Beerman and south of I-475. They set adjacent to Za-Za's in the plaza. The exterior was nothing special and the interior was also no-frills. On the other hand, it was clean and bright offering plenty of seating. It was a rather cold winter evening on a Friday night before Christmas when we stopped in. There were a few other parties in the dining area at the time but we had no problem getting seated right away. Our server attended to us quickly and provided excellent service during our time there. The menu was typical of diner fare and offered an all-day array of breakfast of choices. My wife had the walnut chicken salad which she said was much to her liking. I tried the Gyro Omelet which was excellent. They apparently process their own gyro meat there and the outstanding quality of the taste reflects that. For dessert, we shared a serving or bread pudding, which was absolutely wonderful. Again, it was homemade and was an delightful finishing touch. It is also noteworthy that the portions were more than reasonable as we took home parts of both meals and a portion of the dessert. The prices reflected a very good value as our total check was just over $25 before discounts including two meals, two drinks and tax. Cozy diner with attentive staff given how small the diner is. It is QUIET here! And that's always a good thing for a casual meet up in a cozy booth over a light meal. Before I placed my order online, I called to ask if they still serve beef liver, onions and gravy? The lady said yes. However I will have to complete my order on line and prepay. In which I did just that. After picking up my order and reaching my destination, I noticed there were no plastic silverware, nor napkins. There was also no gravy with the liver. I called to ask about these particular things and the lady stated that they do not give out to go things. What? Make it make sense I'm ordering food to go Oh yea she did not hear me ask about the gravy for the liver. But there is gravy only for the mashed potatoes. We eat here probably once a month. We both always have a clean plate. As in, every bite and morsel devoured. I like their lunch and have had the Reuben, chicken wrap, burgers and BLT. All delicious. I Didn't care for their philly sandwich though. The bread was way to thick but the fries perfectly crispy. My other half always gets breakfast. She loves it everytime and usually gets some sort of Benedict. Absolute favorite is the corn beef and hash omelette. Never had problems with the waitstaff. They are funny hard working people. Always good home cooked food from an extensive menu. One of the few restaurants in Toledo still serving the Betty salad. My family has ordered them as a highlight of our holiday meals. The light, clean, uncluttered interior of Al Smith's was packed with people when I stopped in for lunch last week, but I still got a table quickly. Ordered the greek salad w/ chicken and liked it a lot. Lettuce actually was a little sparse, but it was crisp, the dressing was zingy (note: you probably won't need the entire cup of it that comes on the side...), the chicken and feta were generous. Smaller overall than the greek salads I usually get at diners, though also a couple bucks cheaper. Service was quick and friendly. The menu looked large, with lots of familiar diner items but also some novel sandwich offerings. I plan to return and try some. read more
