    French Toast 2Pieces Sausage Patties
    Jaelyn S.

I went to Al Smith's on a Saturday morning around 10. It was moderately busy, we only had to wait a few minutes for a table as I with 4 others. Friendly service. I ordered the French toast breakfast with sausage & two scrambled eggs with cheese. I also preferred a side of hash browns (I apologize for not capturing a photo before the ketchup AND these hash browns do not require to be smothered in ketchup, that's just what I was in the mood for). While the French toast was a little crisp around the edges their mix for the batter was great & I would absolutely order it again. The eggs were great (which might seem like an easy win but imo that's not always the case). Lastly, of course I had to order the cheesecake to go! It was very fresh & I appreciated their homemade recipe. It makes sense why the cheesecake was selling so quickly by 10:30 am!! I'll definitely be back!

The food was very delicious! We didn't wait long for it to be served! The Hot Mess is what is pictured it was everything but the kitchen sink. Very tasty. This is a meal where you can't add anything, but can take anything off. It was a very big meal, but each bite was amazing! The service here was impecable! Our server was so sweet. We only waited a few minutes to be seated on a Sunday around 11am. All around a hole in the wall "mom and pop" vibe of a breakfast spot. Would recommend to everyone.

I was quite impressed with this little place. My wife and I decided to give it a try for dinner because there was a Yelp check-in special plus a Yelp cash-back deal. We had noticed this establishment a few times in the past but this was the first time to visit. Their location is within a relatively small strip plaza in a fragmented commercial stretch on the west side of Secor just north of Elder-Beerman and south of I-475. They set adjacent to Za-Za's in the plaza. The exterior was nothing special and the interior was also no-frills. On the other hand, it was clean and bright offering plenty of seating. It was a rather cold winter evening on a Friday night before Christmas when we stopped in. There were a few other parties in the dining area at the time but we had no problem getting seated right away. Our server attended to us quickly and provided excellent service during our time there. The menu was typical of diner fare and offered an all-day array of breakfast of choices. My wife had the walnut chicken salad which she said was much to her liking. I tried the Gyro Omelet which was excellent. They apparently process their own gyro meat there and the outstanding quality of the taste reflects that. For dessert, we shared a serving or bread pudding, which was absolutely wonderful. Again, it was homemade and was an delightful finishing touch. It is also noteworthy that the portions were more than reasonable as we took home parts of both meals and a portion of the dessert. The prices reflected a very good value as our total check was just over $25 before discounts including two meals, two drinks and tax. If you are in the area and want a hearty diner-style meal, this is a terrific choice. Based on our experience, you'll get your money's worth and you won't break the bank.

Nice selection of beers, I had the cream sickle orange wheat ale that was really tasty. I had the Walleye with mashed potatoes which was very good, nice big piece of Walleye on the plate. Had the Artichoke Feta dip which was very creamy and their pita chips held up well. My gf had the steak frites which was NY strip cut into strips which was very solid along with restaurant cut fries. Nice atmosphere, friendly service just took a bit to get the food but not a major issue. If you are looking for a nice place for good food and a relaxing atmosphere this is your place!

The drinks were good, but again, a hitch. Service too... So, two of us ordered the French dip sandwich. They were just OK at best. Really no flavor, the roll was kind of wrong and the jus was tasteless. I asked (several times) for some horseradish, and I would guess it's still on its way to the table... 2 folks ordered the fried walleye, and one said it was REALLY good and the other said it was really over cooked. 1 person ordered the burger and said it was great. The last person ordered the salmon and did like it. The standout sides were the brussels sprouts and the fries. Both are very, very good. No comments about the other sides. The person across the way ordered the bruleed sweet potatoes and they looked amazing. The ambiance. What a cool place inside. A cool mix of furnishings with some kitsch factor. Not in a bad way from aesthetics, but in practicality, a big miss. When we were taken to our table, we were presented with a 1950's style dinette and chairs. Again, really kitschy, but not at all fun to sit in. The place has a cool mix of all kinds of stuff, but the noise was deafening. We tried to talk to one another, but it was really hard. Just too much background noise from all the people in a concrete, brick and steel room. Too bad. The drinks... So, I took a chance and ordered my martini. I explained how I wanted it mixed, etc. and the bartender did a superb job! Hats off to him for making a great martini! The big issue was one of our guests wanted a Bloody Mary. The waitress explained that they have great Bloody Mary's as they make their own mix. After the drinks were ordered, the waitress came back to the table to let us know they were out of Bloody Mary mix. Mind you, this is 6:00 on a Saturday. That shouldn't happen. The service... All of the drinks were ordered at the same time, and they came out in a staggered fashion over a period of 15 minutes. Same thing with our dinners. Interestingly, the hold up with the entrees was the 2nd French Dip. I would guess if the guy making the sandwiches saw 2 of the same thing on the same ticket, he'd make them both at the same time. That second sandwich took at least 15 minutes to get to the table. We're all being polite and waiting for his meal to deliver so we can all eat at the same time. Cold fish, anyone? And I'd still like to know where my horseradish went. Oh, parking in the lot to the left of the building is stupid expensive. Park in the garage across the street and save $20 bucks. All in all, our check came to about $100.00 for 3 of us. That's without the tip. My meal was a solid 2 to 3-star event but factoring in the others' opinions and negating the Bloody Mary incident and service, I'll give it 4 stars. Pretty sure I'll go back, but probably not too soon.

Decided to check it out after working from a local library. Upon walking in, the ambiance is welcoming and casual. The wood floors looked very clean and it just felt clean. Since I was here mid-afternoon, the back part of the restaurant was closed, so I took a seat at one of the bar high tops. My server was very friendly and efficient. I ordered the Baja Chicken Rollup without bacon and with ranch dressing on the side. It came out pretty quickly. And did I mention that I also had the fries?! The fries were perfectly seasoned and cooked so that they weren't too crispy or too soft. They were addictive! The sandwich was also amazing, though secondary to the fries. The side of ranch dressing was perfect. The condiments were served in small plastic containers, which were a reminder that this was great food in a bar and grill. Everything was very tasty though and I don't mean to discount the food or service, as it was top notch. Definitely recommend! Check out the pictures below!

Walking in for the order, it was the same wonderful down-to-earth diner ambiance that I love! I have come to believe that carryout can be more difficult for both staff and customers because it needs to be done right at the beginning because there's no opportunity to correct things later- without a return visit. There were a few things that weren't quite right and I'm not sure if it had to do with me reading texts from my family, if I got it wrong, or if it was on the part of the restaurant. No matter, it had to do with side dishes and not main entrees. Still, the little things could have been easily remedied if we had dined at the restaurant- which wasn't an option for many reasons, including the restaurant's limited hours, as they were only open until 3pm on a Sunday. When I picked up the orders, a staff member helped me carry the bags out to my car, which I greatly appreciated. Everyone at this restaurant was super nice! Since we were celebrating my mom's birthday, her entree was the most important and she said the liver and onions were delicious. My nephew was very happy with his chicken chunks. My niece didn't complain about her beef nachos. My brother and sister in law said their orders were just okay - a philly sandwich with onion rings and a turkey sandwich with gravy and onion rings. They said the sandwiches lacked flavor. Since they didn't comment about the onion rings, I'm judging from the photos that they looked amazing. My Turkey Reuben was fabulous, along with the fries. Plus, the side of Thousand Island dressing was perfectly delicious. It's hard to make everyone happy, so my rating is partly based upon my consistently excellent experience at Mama's Kitchen, including omelettes and other breakfast/brunch food. I would overall recommend Mama's Kitchen for its delicious homemade dishes and warm service. Therefore, I'm rounding up to five stars for this unassuming diner that generally over-delivers at a great value for your money!
