Awesome food, great service and very comfortable restaurant. You gotta try it. I'll definitely be back!

Ticks me off to have to take them down so many stars but bad customer service 6 times can't be overlooked. Unfortunately for us this is the best soul food Toledo has to offer. But now I've come for breakfast and somehow got forgotten eating in. Grits have no seasoning no flavor. How u forget me when its just me and another group of politicians having breakfast? Almost made me late for my hair appointment. Now last 5 times we have done carryout. If you call it in when its not busy no problem. Call on a weekend evening and they don't answer or you get that message that says the line is busy. When you ask, the carryout line lady says I don't answer the phone when it's busy. So why have call in orders if you can't handle it? I would be cool if she had just said my apologies what can I get you. They think that is OK customer service. Last 3 visits I got catfish. No condiments. How do you not just have at least tarter sauce? Yams weren't cooked all the way this time. Hard. Dressing not good.I will be going to Texas Roadhouse for my catfish next time. They have condiments and they apologize for subpar service and not act like that is what should be expected

Absolutely delicious and affordable! You can't beat a dinner with 3 sides for 13$ish dollars. The customer service is impeccable! The way they box tour food and drink when you leave and give you a warm welcome when you come in blows my mind away! Catfish cooked and seasoned to perfection, mashed potatoes loaded with flavor and the gravy is so Bomb I had to ask for some on the side! Greens were a little too salty but still tasty. Mac cheese is perfect! Spaghetti is probably one the best I've had in a while. Super meaty for a side dish & so many great flavors! Toledo is lucky to have J'maes! Must stop by! :) Smothered pork chop was also STUPID good. I will be beach!

Been here several more times, for dine in and carry out. Carry out service is very good if you can actually get through the phone like to place your order. Other wise you have to place it there and wait. Carry out has been great during pandemic. I've only had a few bad items, the potato salad and salmon patties weren't good. Meatloaf, catfish, fried chicken, are very good. Yams, Mac and cheese, greens, dressing, spaghetti, cabbage were all very good every time. The service on dine in is impeccable! We usually got the the same waitress and she remembers everything we order and is very good! Sometime the come out from the back to say hi and ask how everything is. Carry out service, the older lady taking orders in the phone ( if she even bothers to answer) needs a little better attitude!

One of my favorite food reviewers enjoyed the food here so I gave it 2 tries. I did get these…read moreorders to go which most seem to do here. Thanks to Doordash for remembering my ordered items. Prices are $10-15 for pub type food so not bad So this is your late night grub spot in my opinion. Its midnight. We got a couple versions of the soul rolls which are egg rolls with different items inside. We got the Philly cheesesteak roll, buffalo chicken, jerk chicken. Also tried burgers and chilli cheese fries. They really need to upgrade their to go containers. The prices are inflated when using Doordash so use it to upgrade your to go. They are using the cheap styrofoam containers and you have egg roll type items so guess what happens when you get them? You get soggy egg rolls. Especially the jerk and buffalo chicken. They put the jerk and buffalo sauce on the outside of the Roll so it's just a soggy mess that honestly I got tired of fooling with it. Should be able to pick up n eat an eggroll. The flavor and everything was okay but the point of getting an egg roll is to have that crunchy type taste right?. The burger was well done with no options to remove onions or other items you don't like. It had zero flavor to me. The best thing that I had was the chili cheese fries and I don't particularly like chili but it was after midnight so post bar food. I think if they upgrade their to-go containers the rolls could be a highlight but for right now I'm cool on ordering from them.

Always in the mood to try a local, new restaurant, I walked to Hotbox Bistro for lunch. On entering…read morethe establishment a few minutes before noon, I was pleasantly surprised to see a half-dozen people already in line ahead of me. For a restaurant that has only been open a couple of months, that is a great sign! On reaching the front of the queue, I ordered a bowl of the Uncle Mike's Gumbo with sausage, plus a can of Pepsi. My bill before tax and tip came to $10, which felt pretty reasonable for downtown. All but one of the orders ahead of me were to-go, so I had my pick of tables. The décor in the establishment was essentially unchanged from its previous life -or was that two restaurants ago?- as Epic Subs and Shawarmas a couple of years ago, with bright red tiles on the walls, and solid white and black booth seating. Other than a painting of a jazz performer in one corner, and a dry-erase board fashioned to look like the torso of a mannequin's body, the restaurant was otherwise devoid of decoration. However as I have said in other reviews, being light on ambiance is a-ok with me, as it allows the owners to focus on what they do best: the food! My meal was ready and delivered to my table in a pretty moderate period of time, especially considering the lunch rush. On removing the lid of the to-go soup bowl, my nose was immediately greeted by the heady aroma of rich, meaty gumbo. After wrestling open the package of plasticware, I dug the puny little plastic teaspoon deep into the bowl in order to thoroughly mix in the rice the menu had said would be on the bottom, then took a big ole bite ... instantly burning the roof of my mouth on the volcanically hot gumbo. Once it cooled enough to eat, I dug into the gumbo just as fast as the tiny little plastic spoon would let me, savouring each thick, flavour-dense bite! The gumbo unexpectedly came with a medium-small piece of homemade cornbread, which was excellent. Almost as good as grandma's cornbread when I was a kid, the outside edges were a little crunchy while the inside was moist. In taste, the cornbread had the perfect balance between sweet and salty. In short, delicious! Pleasingly, once the lunch rush died down, the nice lady who took my order at the counter stopped by my table to ask how I liked the food, and to see if I needed anything else. For a shop that is predominantly geared to be a takeaway place, I felt that was a very nice touch of customer service. PROS: great food with unique flavours, and reasonable prices CONS: this is a pretty minor quibble, but the plastic teaspoon was not really up to the challenge of the rich, thick, meaty gumbo; I felt like a cartoon character, with my arm a blur of motion delivering tiny spoonfuls of gumbo from the bowl to my mouth Overall I rate Hotbox Bistro as being Very Good, and look forward to returning!

I came for the gumbo, and I stayed for the cheese fries…read more This little diner has been so many different things over the years and has sat empty for so long, it's easy to forget it's even there. The current tenants are serving up a mixed bag of southern fare, burgers and a bit of soul food along the way. Sadly today, the one thing they were out of was the one thing I came in for... the gumbo. Long story short, I will be back because I've heard it's really good. As for the burgers? Super fresh with a home cooking vibe. The fries? Cooked to order with skins on and really great! I added cheese and recommend you do as well. To note: their menu is super limited in addition to their "daily" specials, but it looks like their "daily" specials might be available all the time. Also note: beverage offerings are super limited. No tea or coffee. Just canned soda and bottled water. Next visit, I'm going to hopefully try that gumbo... and maybe some fried fish. Hoping this small joint succeeds, as it adds a missing element to downtown Toledo. Super friendly staff and great prices. This is not fancy food, it's just good food.
