I wish I could give 4.5 stars honestly because this was almost a perfect 4 meals. I ordered the curry goat (my personal favorite) with rice and peas (beans) with green beans, the oxtails with cabbage, the red snapper with cabbage, and the jerk chicken with rice and peas. Wow. I was very satisfied with all of these meals. Plenty in portions, tender meat (a couple of oxtails were majority fat) but the flavoring of the curry and sauces and seasonings were perfect (and spicy ofc!). The jerk chicken is probably the spiciest. I wouldn't say the curry goat or oxtails aren't that spicy. The red snapper had a good amount of spice. It also had a lot of bones. I travel the Caribbean multiple times a year for the last 30+ years, it's basically my second home. When I'm in the states, this place hits just like Aunties kitchen! It even resembles a typical Caribbean take away on the islands. Boi, you can not find better tasting Jamaican food in our area! This was the first time for festival bread and it was also very flavorful and tastes just like Grammies. I have to drive approx 50 min to pick up, and it's totally worth the drive. Just stopped in to grab a quick lunch, first time visit. Ordered two beef patties and an order of their special rice. The patties were fantastic, nice and spicy and delicious. The crust is amazing, very authentic in my experience. Their special rice was also fantastic, absolutely delicious. Looking at their menu they have a huge variety of Jamaican specialties including oxtail goat etc, if you're looking for a place with authentic Jamaican I'd highly recommend this restaurant. I'm going to resist the temptation to compare Mirage Express to Dexter's, because it's a different type of restaurant, entirely. As the name implies, ME was intended to be more of a "take out joint," and it fits that bill perfectly. The service was fast and friendly. It took 5 minutes to prepare three meals. The prices were low...14 bucks fed me and my wife, and when we were done eating, we were more than satisfied. (Mind you, I didn't feel stuffed like a gluttonous hippopotamus with gastroparesis, but I don't need to feel that way after EVERY meal!) The food was excellent. The curried goat with stir fried cabbage was great. The jerk chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly; it fell off the bone and brought on just enough heat. The cornbread fritters (Festival) were fantastic. Not so great were the oxtails. They were "just ok," as was the rice and beans. Although ME doesn't have alcohol, they have a cooler full of American and Jamaican soft drinks. The patties? Like those from Dexter's, the patties, unfortunately, are not made in house. After several years staying away from this place, I tried it again several months ago and have been back multiple times since. I think my previous overly greasy experience was an anomaly. Mirage was surprisingly good. I got the oxtails and the goat, with the festival and rice with gravy. Definitely try the festival!! It was so good. Food... AMAZING! I'm very picky with my Caribbean food, growing up on it, and this place (now called Jamaican Spice) did not disappoint! Food was great, I ordered a large Curry Goat with Stir-Fry Cabbage and rice and peas, portions were big, food fresh and delicious! I want to go back for more!! Plus, finding a place that has my favorite drink Ting, just brought excitement! I hope they plan to add some things to the menu soon. If I had reviewed them the first time we ordered this would've been a 5 star review. Everything was amazing so we ordered a second time. Never again. Half our order wasn't even delivered. They replaced one of our sides because they were out of what we ordered, they didn't even ask us if that was okay. I'm also missing half my order, with no refund in sight - I'm currently taking that up with doordash. Then one of our meals was completely different from what we ordered. The food is decent but the lack of care when it comes to making sure customers get what they ordered is just awful. read more

I can't believe that Toledo has Jamaican food! That said, I didn't actually expect much, but was pleasantly surprised by Mirage (aka Jamaican Express). I second everyone else's reviews in that the place is definitely a very dive-y kind of take out joint attached to a convenience store of sorts. But don't let the informal space deter you, the food is great! We got the oxtail, curry goat, and jerk chicken to go, which were all very good. The jerk chicken was REALLY spicy; I don't tolerate spicy very well, so maybe you won't struggle as much as I did. But it was delicious nonetheless. Oxtail was tender and fall-off-the-bone. The rice and beans were solid, I wasn't quite as psyched about the festival (cornbread fritters), would take the rice and beans over that, but worth trying just for the novelty. Jamaican Spice was recommended to me by a coworker, so I figured I would Doordash it one day for dinner. We ordered the fried catfish, jerk chicken, and oxtails and curry goat combo. The sides that we ordered with the meals were plantains, cabbage, rice and beans, callaloo, festival, and coco bread along with 3 diet cokes. The winners of the meal were definitely the catfish and oxtails. Catfish was fried perfectly and salted nicely, and the oxtails were succulent with a good gravy on top. Just wish we had gotten more oxtail meat. The jerk chicken was a bit bland surprisingly which was disappointing, and the curry goat had the same gravy as the oxtail and we couldn't tell if it was goat. Not sure if they just gave us more oxtails through a mixup in the order? The sides are skippable - plantains were bland, and I don't remember what the callaloo, festival, and coco bread differences were but we got what seemed like plain dinner rolls, a cornbread, and a fried donut for the three of them. Nothing to write home about. I liked the rice and beans and cabbage though. Another miss with the order was that I got a coke and 2 sprites instead of 3 diet cokes but oh well. This is the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted in my life . The chef didn't even remove the skin on the meat . The chicken was pink on the inside ! And the rice was sticky and too sweet ! The stew chicken taste as if I'm eating literal sugar ! Worst thing I've ever tasted ! Jerk was nasty too! My American friend couldn't even eat hers ! We will make sure never to go there again! I've been eyeing Jamaican Spice online for a while. I already get top notch Jamaican in Ann Arbor, but when a opportunity came up for me to see how well Toledo's version fares, I jumped at the chance. I had jerk chicken, rice and peas, and plantains, requesting they make it as spicy as possible. Unfortunately the chicken only comes in one spice level, so they gave me a side of hot sauce. Fortunately I still have some ghost peppers in the freezer from last season, so I thawed and diced one of those up and tossed it in with the rice. The chicken was cooked perfectly and very nice tasting. I couldn't taste the coconut milk normally found in rice and peas, but they were a hit with bold and balanced flavors. The plantains could have been much softer and sweeter; Those were lacking overall. I came into this with low expectations, but so far in my experience I'm impressed. I'll be returning for more jerk when I'm in the area and will try some more of the other menu offerings. read more

Perfect place for students to try new foods, for a beginner I would recommend the goat. However for the more experienced the ox tail. Love the food here, and the staff. OK. The first thing you have to get comfortable is that this place is in a gas station. That's right the place you normally get tube like food off the "roller". That said the Jerk is irie mon! As good as I have had in Jamaica. Spicy, with a choice of white or dark meat. The cabbage, festival bread and rice and beans are all great sides. Liked the curried goal as well. I ordered dinners through the grubhub app -- I placed an order for a oxtail dinner with 2 sides -- along with an all oxtail order -- and paid for 2 additional side dishes -- when I received my order, I received 1 meal -- and it was chicken -- nothing that I ordered -- this chicken meal cost me a total of $59.50 which was inclusive of the driver's tip -- this company made no arrangements to rectify this situation, instead they became argumentive and told me I had to go through grub hub -- well, grub hub got the order right -- who messed up the order completely was Jamaican Spice --- they have no customer service, in place as they made no attempt to correct this order. We have eaten at the Sylvania Ave location twice and were delighted each time. The first time we had their sampler platter - everything was absolutely delicious.
