My experience was pretty good. I was just a little upset I ordered a build your own sandwich is was suppose to be toasted but it was still cold like it wasn't toasted at all. I didn't have to complain or have it fixed. But other than that the turkey was pretty good. I will definitely come back and try something different. read more

Toledo doesn't have as many delis per capita as, say, NYC. But, the ones we do have are pretty damned good. At or near the top of the list is SMOKIN' OLIVE DELI!! In South Toledo at the corner of Rugby and S Detroit, lies the family owned and operated SOD. (Drive south on Rugby from Glanzman...one way street). MEAT AND POTATOES: The sandwiches are awesome. AWESOME I SAID! Although the secret ingredient may actually be love, these sammies seem to be crafted with the freshest and tastiest ingredients known to man. I'm serious. Expensive they are, but that's ok, because each sandwich (and "free" bag of chips) will probably come pretty close to filling you up. With that in mind, 14 bucks for an excellent MEAL doesn't sound so bad. To be honest, the Greek salad is not the best in town...but Greek salad isn't really the focus of a place like this, now is it. The atmosphere is friendly, comfortable, and clean. It's not fancy...it's a deli, after all. Order and pay at the counter, receive your meal, then either sit down and eat, or carry out. The people taking care of you are the owner and her kids. They're very friendly...and fast...and efficient. I must say, I'm really surprised there are (relatively) few reviews for Smokin' Olive Deli. If this place were in downtown Sylvania or downtown Perrysburg, or even in Cricket West, I'll bet there would be 100+ five star reviews! But since that's not the case, I'd whole hearted recommend that you truck on down to SoTol and show some love to SOD...in return, they'll show some serious love to your taste buds! 5 STARS! read more

Have read about this place for a while. Finally had time to check them out. Friendly service right when we walked through the door we were greeted. Ordered a chicken croissant sandwich and a Tommy pastrami Panini with some potato salad. High quality ingredients! The chicken salad was so hearty and full of cubed chicken with the right amount of crisp celery and maybe pineapple bits? My Tommy Pastrami was so crispy; it's like a turkey sandwich with pastrami bacon, I added mayo. Yum Both people working came to check on us and our food. Picked up the muffaletta on ciabatta bread today for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised it was Panini grilled. It came with a bag of chips, of choice, and aside of a vinaigrette. I have to say I enjoyed or loved every bite of it. The sandwich was quite substantial, and filling, and I can eat a good amount. The sandwich was so well balanced. The spicy meats, the creamy salad dressing and cheese, warm Krispy bread, and to bring it all together a dip into the vinaigrette is something you don't want to miss out on. I have to say this has become my absolute favorite place for a panini splurge, yummy side dish, or a healthier option. They only use exceptional quality ingredients. The panini is made right in front of you. (I love the roast beef with Havarti- it's a huge sandwich.) I usually can only eat half and definitely worth the cost which is honestly about the same you pay anywhere these days, it's just that you'll get so much better quality, and quantity, of food here. Even the tomato on the panini was huge, perfectly ripe, and wonderfully flavored. The owner and staff are very friendly and really make this a true local hidden gem "mom and pop" type establishment. Oh, and even the gazpacho was delicious! Make no mistake this is definitely a lunch place with a local feel. The money goes into the food, not a fancy facade...which I've learned over time is how one should actually pick out the best local food in any town. All of the little side salads that I've had so far are really good but I would recommend starting with the spicy seafood or the broccoli salad.
