My experience was pretty good. I was just a little upset I ordered a build your own sandwich is was suppose to be toasted but it was still cold like it wasn't toasted at all. I didn't have to complain or have it fixed. But other than that the turkey was pretty good. I will definitely come back and try something different. read more

Toledo doesn't have as many delis per capita as, say, NYC. But, the ones we do have are pretty damned good. At or near the top of the list is SMOKIN' OLIVE DELI!! In South Toledo at the corner of Rugby and S Detroit, lies the family owned and operated SOD. (Drive south on Rugby from Glanzman...one way street). MEAT AND POTATOES: The sandwiches are awesome. AWESOME I SAID! Although the secret ingredient may actually be love, these sammies seem to be crafted with the freshest and tastiest ingredients known to man. I'm serious. Expensive they are, but that's ok, because each sandwich (and "free" bag of chips) will probably come pretty close to filling you up. With that in mind, 14 bucks for an excellent MEAL doesn't sound so bad. To be honest, the Greek salad is not the best in town...but Greek salad isn't really the focus of a place like this, now is it. The atmosphere is friendly, comfortable, and clean. It's not fancy...it's a deli, after all. Order and pay at the counter, receive your meal, then either sit down and eat, or carry out. The people taking care of you are the owner and her kids. They're very friendly...and fast...and efficient. I must say, I'm really surprised there are (relatively) few reviews for Smokin' Olive Deli. If this place were in downtown Sylvania or downtown Perrysburg, or even in Cricket West, I'll bet there would be 100+ five star reviews! But since that's not the case, I'd whole hearted recommend that you truck on down to SoTol and show some love to SOD...in return, they'll show some serious love to your taste buds! 5 STARS! read more

Have read about this place for a while. Finally had time to check them out. Friendly service right when we walked through the door we were greeted. Ordered a chicken croissant sandwich and a Tommy pastrami Panini with some potato salad. High quality ingredients! The chicken salad was so hearty and full of cubed chicken with the right amount of crisp celery and maybe pineapple bits? My Tommy Pastrami was so crispy; it's like a turkey sandwich with pastrami bacon, I added mayo. Yum Both people working came to check on us and our food. Just a few tables but enough for people eating in. Such a good find. We will be back. read more

Stopped in with the family for lunch on the way through Toledo. We ordered a cheddar grill cheese, turkey rubin, club and stinger sandwiches. The sandwiches are massive!! I have to say this has become my absolute favorite place for a panini splurge, yummy side dish, or a healthier option. They only use exceptional quality ingredients. The panini is made right in front of you. (I love the roast beef with Havarti- it's a huge sandwich.) I usually can only eat half and definitely worth the cost which is honestly about the same you pay anywhere these days, it's just that you'll get so much better quality, and quantity, of food here. Even the tomato on the panini was huge, perfectly ripe, and wonderfully flavored. The owner and staff are very friendly and really make this a true local hidden gem "mom and pop" type establishment. Oh, and even the gazpacho was delicious! Make no mistake this is definitely a lunch place with a local feel. The money goes into the food, not a fancy facade...which I've learned over time is how one should actually pick out the best local food in any town. No, I don't own stock and am not friends with the owners. I just rarely write reviews, but this summer I found this place has me coming back for more thought I should share. read more

I gotta say, after getting sandwiches from here several times, this is definitely one of the best delis in town. Absolute gem! Prices are just right. Paninis pressed to perfection!!! This is such a good choice if you're looking for a fresh lunch or something to take home for dinner. You can tell everything is actually made by hand with care. All of the little side salads that I've had so far are really good but I would recommend starting with the spicy seafood or the broccoli salad. Fresh and clean inside, you can sit down if you want to or just grab it and go, you can park right out front and get in and get out for lunch if you need to. The prices are really reasonable and there's a lot of food. If you get a sandwich it's like one you would make it home ... Actually has meat on it! read more

The turkey panini and home made macaroni salad were so awesome that I came back two more days the same week to get almost the same thing while my wife was a patient in the hospital at UTMC. I will be back whenever I'm in south Toledo again. The people that work there were very friendly and helpful too. Only wish they were there when I lived within walking distance 20 years ago but at least Marco's is still there. read more

It wasn't listed on the ingredients for this dish, though. The sweet chili sauce saved this dish from being a total wash. Crab cakes, A: The star of the meal. These were some of the best crab cakes I've ever tasted, and that's saying something. In Toledo, OH? Yes! Simple--just crab meat and a few vegetables, still mostly crunchy. No bullshit fillers or flavorings. There was a lemony sort of dressing which set off the crab cakes (and the accompanying salad) very well. Delicious.

This place was awesome! We stopped on our way through for lunch and the sandwiches were amazing. The vegetarian sandwich was excellent (and could be made vegan), as were the meat sandwiches and the chips that came with them. The owner and staff were so friendly and helpful. There were plenty of places to sit and eat in, and they provided boxes to take any leftovers, as well as free glasses of water while we were there. Located just outside of Toledo in the neighboring community of Oregon, this place has been dishing out delicious New York-styled sandwiches dating back to 2011. The location itself is located directly off of Woodville Rd. and just north of Oakdale Ave. As of 2023, they are opened for business Tuesday through Saturday from 8am-7pm while being closed on Sunday and Monday. I ended up coming here during the afternoon of Wednesday 9/13/2023 at around 3:30pm as I had not yet eaten lunch and needed something to fuel me the rest of the afternoon. The exterior offers ample parking throughout while the large sign is easily identifiable from the street. The main entrance also has the business name in very large letters which gives their business that 'wow' factor even before entering. As far as the interior layout, it is well laid-out and spacious with seating for about 25 guests. And since this place is named after New York City, they have a ton of memorabilia on everything associate with the Big Apple. This includes representing the NY Mets, NY Yankees, & NY Giants sports teams, a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge, a Subway stop at Times Square, signs of many New York streets, and much more. All of their menu items are even named after landmarks and sports teams in New York City; "Broadway", "Central Park", "Rangers", etc. I ended up going with a small specialty sub (for $5.99) of their "Madison Square" combo. This included ham, pastrami, salami, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, peppers, Italian dressing, mustard, and creamy mayonnaise on a soft New York-styled roll. I also opted for a bag of chips which were Ohio's own "Ballreich's" sour cream & onion flavored and a 20 oz. size of Royal Crown cola. Total price was a very reasonable $10 for everything. I also wanted to point out that in addition to their yummy sandwiches, they also have a huge variety of soups, salads, potato salads, snack trays, and even a ton of desserts. Once my sandwich was ready, I took a bite into pure heaven. The bread was one of the freshest and softest rolls I've even bit into. They also did not skimp on the meat while this place can easily rival any New York deli. The service here was also top notch as the staff here go above and beyond for their customers. When you factor in the service, food quality, location, experience and affordable prices, "Big Apple Deli" is easily a 5-star Yelp experience.

So it's almost like NYC-Detroit fusion, the best of both worlds LOL! I haven't tried the rest of their menu much. I tried a lemon chicken sandwich once, and it was not on par with the ones that I've from the better delis in Harlem and The Bronx. It was kind of soggy and salty. I might try more of the subs at some point, but I really think of this as a one dish place for now, in spite of their long menu. I think it's hard to express just how happy I am to have this place a short drive from me. The cost to obtain one of my favorite foods from my home in Toledo went down from about $500 and several hours of travel (the price of a round-trip flight to LaGuardia plus one night in a hotel in Queens) down to about $15 and a 10 minute drive.
