The light, clean, uncluttered interior of Al Smith's was packed with people when I stopped in for lunch last week, but I still got a table quickly. Ordered the greek salad w/ chicken and liked it a lot. Lettuce actually was a little sparse, but it was crisp, the dressing was zingy (note: you probably won't need the entire cup of it that comes on the side...), the chicken and feta were generous. Smaller overall than the greek salads I usually get at diners, though also a couple bucks cheaper. Service was quick and friendly. The menu looked large, with lots of familiar diner items but also some novel sandwich offerings. I plan to return and try some. read more

It was hot and not too salty. We then had the colossal salad and the southwest burger. Both very fresh but I've never been so envious for a salad. Horrible experience in for lunch. My friend ordered a quarter pound hamburger,no bun substituting soup for potatoes. The burger comes out smaller than a slider. The waitress offers an exchange,new order is hot roast beef sandwich, the waitress already knew soup was substituted yet potatoes come on the platter and we are now charged full price for a cup of soup. I live outside of Toledo and I've heard of Al Smiths' for quite sometime. I drove by the place a many times when in town and thought they have been open for years they must be good . I didn't have time to eat that day but I had time to stop in to give it the sniff test. When I parked I met someone coming out and asked how it was. She said it used to be her uncle's place and the new owners have kept up the quality. I stepped in and it passed the sniff test, I didn't smell any wonderful aroma coming from the kitchen but it did smell clean. The atmospher was quaint and cozy. Fast forward a few months and I stopped in to eat, I had the meatloaf, my wife the chicken salad and my son the Cuban. We also shared the chicken nuggets for an appetizer. The nuggets were delicious. My meatloaf was the best I ever had at a resturant, my wife and son were real happy with their meals also. Our server Nick was the most personable waiter I ever had. He was plesant chitchatted with some humor and left in a short and appropriate time to continue serving others. He returned to check on us just when we were in need of more attention; never too close and never too far away. This isn't a Michelin star resturant but the food was very good, especially for the price. We will be coming back when in Toledo. read more

I just had a really awful experience here. I'm returning to the area and I always heard great things, but the customer service is severely lacking. I ordered breakfast and a side of coffee and asked for a few containers of cream. I absolutely should have asked for the cream on the side, but they put all the cream in the coffee. When I arrived and realized my mistake, I let Brooke know, and she chastised me about this and essentially yelled at me. I was confused because I thought it was just a miscommunication on both sides, but Brooke made to feel like I severely screwed up. There are better ways to handle this situation, and when I tried to talk to the manager about it, it was clear that she did not care and tried to just get me out as quickly as possible. I will not return anytime soon. We must do better. You can't risk customer loyalty for a cup of coffee. read more

Had to leave early, could not evev finish my coffee because exhaust fumes from a vehicle left ruuning at the back door area and the door was left open i am guessing for a delivery or a worker was on break smoking in a running car cause it was cold out, however i brought it to a young ladies attention because my self and six other patrons were complaining, she seemed to think there was no issue with that i have been going there for years on a semi regular basis and each time i go any more it seems service just is not what it should be. Only been once, and most likely won't be again. Upon entering both of us noticed just how sticky the floor was, then upon sitting the table was sticky as well, which was very unsettling. Came for breakfast, I ordered corned beef and hash with eggs, and gf ordered eggs benedict. Personally, every time I've ordered corned beef and hash at a diner before, I've gotten real pieces of corned beef in my meal, but here all I got was that canned corned beef and hash product. Very disappointing, as that canned stuff is horrible. The eggs were very good. The side home fries were not home fries however, just a side of mushy hash, which was very upsetting. While I was very unsatisfied with my meal, my girlfriend loved here eggs Benedict, and they were some of the best she's had. Ilove this place. Great food, HUGE delicious dessserts, great service. Breakfast is always good, the french toast is ridiculous its so good. Dinners are just as good, Especially their "chalkboard" items. You can't go wrong here, no matter what you get, and I've eaten most things on their menu by now. I work just around the corner from Al Smith's but I avoided going in. Many years ago I had been in here and been less than impressed with the quality of food. I am so glad I finally gave in and tried it again! Server was funny and nice and did a great job. I ate breakfast and my food was cooked wonderfully. We were in Toledo for a few days and used a Yelp deal and the positive reviews to select Al's for brunch on the way out of town. I'm glad we did. This small unassuming diner in a strip mall had some very creative dishes that really worked. Prices were truly reasonable and with the yelp deal a steal! That they serve lunch in the am and breakfast at lunch time topped off the pick. I had the Mexican scramble with a cucumber sauce that was surprisingly wonderful. My family often gets the bean soup to go with cornbread. It's always really tasty! I recently went in to get breakfast for dinner. The omelet I got had a hollandaise sauce that wasn't the right consistency. It seemed too thin. The taste, however, was decent. I wouldn't order the hasbrowns again though. Recently I was with my wife and her 87 year old mother at a small diner in Toledo, OH. We coming to the end of our stay and commenting on the meal. My wife's mother commented on how her toast was not toasted enough. The server came by and passed the bill to us. I commented on the toast my wife's mother had. The waitress looked at the plate and said that since more the half was consumed, she couldn't do anything about it. I asked why is that, she said it was the policy. The policy, what policy? It was not written in the menu! After having flashbacks about a toast exchange at a diner between Peter Fonda and a waitress in Easy Rider, I returned to the diner. We have been there to this place multiple times, this was the first time I have heard of such a policy. How does one ascertain what constitutes over 50% eaten. Heck we weren't even asking to remake the toast, just commenting! Rather than saying, "Sorry to hear that, is there anything I can do to make you feel better?" to which my mother in law would have said, "No thank you, just thought you ought to know." Nope, just a. "It is our policy." We then asked the server's supervisor, about the same matter, to which her reply was, "It is management's policy." for two slices of bread, perhaps be valued at $0.10 (not counting labor and processing) the wait staff had effectively alienated a customer. Not by their policy by the way it was presented. Perhaps if they would have said something like, "I understand, I am sorry you found the toast to not meet your expectations. Is there anything I can do to make you feel better about this?" This would have shifted off the decision to the customer to which the customer might say, "No" or "Yes", preserving the friendly relationship. In my experience above we would have ordered a couple slices of pie which would have brought the bill to $30. With Good service a 20% tip is warranted ($6.00); with Great service 30% or greater ($9.00 +). However in this case due to the blaming of the policy, the tip was less than 10% ($2.00). Assuming good service a service fee of $6.00 was warranted we would paid $6.00 service fee. After being confronted by the policy (value of the bread $0.10), it dropped the service fee from $6.00 to $2.00, a loss of $4.00. When the looking at the cost of the bread ($0.10) and the delta between what they would have received from what they did receive, they took a $4 dollar hit over a $0.10 piece of toast. The problem as I see it is that the policy provided the server, the one on the front line, no flexibility to make customer service decisions impacting the quality of the experience of the guest. At this establishment it was my way of the highway, or the veritable Soup Nazi, "No soup for you!" Perhaps one day they will grant to the server the discretion to make positive customer services changes. And so here is MY policy. Whenever service is superior, I will reward that service with a premium service fee of 30% or greater over the pretax total; where service is good but not exceptional, I will award it with 20% service fee over the pretax total; however, where service is substandard (or there is a stupid policy), I will award it with less than 20% of pretax total. read more

I travel annually from NYC to the greater Toledo area at least once a year to meet up with friends. The first year I went out there, I found Al Smith's Place in a search for restaurants that earn American Airlines miles with purchases. So, I went for breakfast and it's become part of the ritual of my trips out there. Originally, I would just go there on my own, but now my friends join me there, as they enjoy it as well. The skillets are fabulous, as is all of the food that my friends have ordered, too. The pies are amazing. The staff is friendly. There is plenty of parking. They have their own rewards program to earn entrees or pie slices. This is the perfect place to eat, if you ask me. I look forward to coming to ASP each trip and, even more so, I look forward to earning my free slice of pie. :) read more

McPeek and I used to sit at the counter about once a week and ogle the supernaturally cute boys that Al hires to run his diners. We'd also ogle the supernaturally yummy homemade dishes whizzing out to nearby tables. The servers loved us, mostly because we tipped the crap out of the cute ones and the funny ones, and also because McPeek was a local celebrity, being everbody's favorite 6am newscaster. We invented something called the "flyby"--if there was a menu item we were considering, especially a special, we'd convince the servers to swoop it by under our noses on the way to another table, so we could scope it out and decide if we wanted it.
