The 5 star yelp reviews combined with the 15% off for yelp checkin brought me in to the restaurant. Walking in, the decor was updated and clean and at 1 pm on a Thursday, there was several other tables seated. However, there was some confusion as to who was our waitress as we may have come mid shift change, but we still got good service. I ordered off the specials menu - Irish Benedict with hollandaise on the side (poached eggs on top of corned beef hash), home fries and multi grain toast. The eggs were slightly overcooked but there was some yolk and the hollandaise sauce seemed homemade and was delicious. Unfortunately, the sauce was the best thing about the meal. The hash was definitely canned and mushy...think salty Alpo. The toast wasn't really toasted and didn't have much flavor and the home fries had brown spots and straddled blandness. On the positive side, the coffee was fresh and tasty and the service ended up being on point. This place flirts with goodness but ends up taking home the ugly cousin called mediocrity. read more

Ever since I started going to UT down the road, I've been coming to Al Smith's Place. It's on the cheap side, especially if you are a student and can take advantage of their student discount. I rarely pay more than $7- $10 per plate and the portions are large. It's classic diner food and tastes great! The staff is extremely friendly and makes you feel at home, they often recognize repeat customers! To be honest, the pies are what keep bringing me back. This place is a little hit-or-miss. The prices are good, and the staff is typically friendly, although they do have one waitress who is a bit rough. Every time I go there, I order an omelet. Half the time it is cooked properly, and half the time the whites are still runny in the middle; hence the three stars. This is our go to place for every occasion. The food is delicious and plentiful, the staff is friendly and helpful prices are excellent and you have to have a piece of their pies made in house. My favorite is the chili Mac delicious flavor and large quantity almost as good as my own LOL. Their Reuben sandwich is fabulous and you can't beat the fries. As a frequent visitor they have reward cards just ask for one. I eat there at least once or twice a week. My ten month old son and I met one of my friends for breakfast at Al Smith's. Although I now live in Michigan, I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and this was my first experience here. The Yelp reviews really portray this place for what it is. It is tucked away from the busy street and is a very clean, bright, and friendly space. I usually have a high chair cover with me but forgot it that day, I'm iffy about restaurant high chairs, but the one that was brought to the table looked squeaky clean! Our server's name was Kristen and she really made our experience great. She knew everything about the menu and didn't mind my 21 questions. She talked to Liam like he was his own little customer which I thought was sweet of her. Lastly, the price was great. Stopped in today for breakfast and was very pleasantly surprised while it has been a month or more since I have been to Al Smiths the waitress (Kristen) had memorized my order from my last visit. Of the breakfast places in town I have been to it seems that this is the only place that knows how to truly make poached eggs and they make them PERFECTLY! I asked for extra tomatoes on my salad, was told there was a 50 cent charge. Enough to buy a whole tomato and then some, but, ok. When my salad was served, there were two small limp slices of tomato. When I inquired about my extra tomatoes, I was unapologetically told the second slice was the extra one, as it usually comes with one slice. A very underwhelming experience. read more

This was a really great find! In my attempt to avoid chains and find great local places, this place was exactly what I like to discover. My son is a student at UT and lives close to here so we gave it a try. It's hidden in the corner of a strip mall. The interior is tastefully decorated. They have a great breakfast menu. You can make your own for $7 and it's perfect. The options from breakfast, sandwiches, dinners and desserts are almost endless and you get the feeling that anything you order will be good. We also got a kids cheeseburger and fry and BBQ pulled pork sandwich...again solid choices and good inexpensive food. Of course we had to try their pie...they make them all themselves! We got the chocolate peanut butter...very good. There is another place close known for their pies but this place has them matched! Don't hesitate to give it a try! You won't regret it. We will be back to try more of their speciality items as today I came with people with simple tastes. Pastrami rolls sounded good. I'm sure their Ruben is great too. This breakfast place was absolutely excellent. Arrived at about 11am on a Sunday and was immediately sat. Waiter brought us some coffee and water soon after sitting. The menu is pretty typical of a diner but we came for breakfast. 3/4 people in our party got skillets. Two got Stacey's skillet and I got the Chorizo skillet. The other person got some chicken and waffles. The skillets came with a side of biscuit or toast. The skillets were absolutely amazing (sorry, I ate it before getting the chance to take a pic). The sausage gravy was not overly salty like some restaurants are. The chorizo in my skillet was a bit on the fatty side but I got my eggs as egg whites to off set the fatty ness. The biscuit/toast came with a side of butter, grape and strawberry jelly. The biscuit was very light, fluffy, and buttery. Not at all flakey. I would definitely go there again specifically for the unique and super tastey skillet. Prices were super fair as well. Total bill was $35 including tip. Does not accept American Express. read more

I'm the asshole that will modify 5 things on my omlette and they always do a fantastic job with catering to whatever preference you want. They also have more options to choose from than you can imagine. It's reasonably priced for huge portions and the staff is so damn friendly. Ask for Kristen... she's the best and will take care of you like no other waitress will. She's also funny, cute, and really single. read more

Okay, so I gotta start taking pictures more often... sorry... I'll get better at this...My wife and I eat at Al Smith's at least twice a month. It's our go to when we don't wanna cook. We know that the food will be great and the servers make us feel welcome. Last night they recommended we try the eggette dessert. (I hope I spelled that right.) It's only on the Sunday special board, but they should make it if you ask. It's like a waffle but backward, instead of concaved pockets it has crispy, and warm, raised egg shaped bulbs, so you get a consistent crispy texture all across the whole. It's topped with cool vanilla ice cream, and covered with caramel and chocolate syrup. What could be better? Since the dinner prices are so fair at Al Smith's it doesn't make sense to not get dessert... And if you're like us and keep coming back, you'd better get punch cards and earn a free slice of pie and then a free dinner. read more

It's a shame that I have to give this place 1 star. I was looking forward to the chicken skillet, which I ordered. The waiter brings me my meal. I dig in and am surprised that there is no chicken in it. I ask him if this was the chicken skillet and he responds you ordered the country skillet. I've been there @20 times and ONLY order the chicken skillet so I know what I ordered. So this "waiter" tells me that he will order some chicken to put on the skillet if I want. I tell him no I want to speak with the manager. I speak with the manager inform her what happened and how many times I've been there and it all could've been avoided if this "waiter" just said oh I must have heard you wrong and I'll get that chicken skillet in for you. Well her customer service skills were on full blast as she charges me for the coffee?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! A shame. Never again. read more

Was looking for an easy location for lunch off the highway and found this hidden gem! Was pretty busy when we arrived...sat outside which was nice. Ordered the tator tot chili appetizer which sounds like pretty simple dish....but that chili made it delicious. Then ordered "Stacys skillet" with biscuits....it did not disappoint! If your looking for good home made food to stuff your belly with, this is the place. I enjoyed the Stacy Skillet enough to order one to go. I have a sweet tooth, so I highly recommend the heavenly bread pudding with a cup of coffee. Decently priced and the portions are generous. So let me start off by saying, I really wanted to like this place because it's a 5-10 minute walk from my home. I heard from neighbors that the food and service was great. Unfortunately, I was completely let down. Our server was decent, but when questioned about a couple items on the menu, she was very unhelpful. Her comments were "yeah some people like it" or "I don't know what to compare it to." So I ordered what I think was a "Spanish chorizo omelette?" With home fries and a biscuit. The salsa on it was sour like it had gone bad, the huge glob of sour cream and salsa were piled on top of it and there was nothing appealing about this concoction, it looked like a mess. I gave it a chance and took a couple bites.... the only thing I ate was the home fries and a bite of my girlfriends biscuits and gravy. Then when I went to pay the bill, the young girl at the register didn't bother asking how my food was, she didn't smile or say have a nice day or anything. They weren't busy, I didn't make it known how displeased I was. I may give them another shot but it will be at a much later date. Had dinner there last evening. Excellent service as always. However, the food has not been up to par since reopening after the fire. My wife could not eat her cheddar broccoli soup or her breaded shrimp, my beef liver was like shoe leather. It was our last visit. The service and waitress are horrible and rude! They ARE NOT KIND NOR ARE THEY FRIENDLY! They walked pass us at least 15 times all of them and no one ever stopped to take our orders. My husband called out to one she ignored him. I called out to one & she ignored me! So we decided if they didn't want our money we'll go somewhere else and that's what we did. So we visited this place looking for something specific, we didn't get what we wanted but we were pleasantly surprised. Our server, Nick, was very pleasant and accommodating. We ordered the tater nachos, the pastrami rolls and the chicken and waffles. Tater tots were delicious and perfectly crispy, a little too much chili and not enough cheese but still good. The pastrami rolls were phenomenal, will definitely be going back for those! The chicken and waffles.. the waffle was actually really good, it was odd that they cut up the chicken tenders on top- I would've preferred actual whole chicken tenders, but it was ok. The whipped butter on the other hand... absolutely delicious! We also order the soup of the day which was not very good, but Nick was awesome and took it off the bill for us without even having to ask. Had not been to Al Smith's in over 5 yrs. (I had financial problems) I will be returning soon. I first visited over 20 years ago. In fact, I first visited when they were located on Lewis Ave. But I eventually in late 2000's became disenchanted with them. Their standards had really gone down hill. Dirty - cold food - slow service - food lacked flavor - just not a good experience. Recently, I remembered how good they used to be. Then when I saw they had remodeled, I decided to give them another try. I decided to give the BBQ Beef sandwich w/fries a try. Well, I was not disappointed. The beef was pilled high w/ a tangy BBQ sauce and hot crisp fries. I was so impressed, I decided to order dessert. The Bread Pudding was out of this world. It was served warm w/ lots of cinnamon, whip cream, and some sort of warm caramel all over it. It was large enough for 2, but I ate the whole thing. Service was great. And the place was clean enough to eat off the floor. Prices were reasonable for the hearty servings. And this was all 1 hr b-4 closing. I will definitely be going there again soon! read more
