We are out of towners driving up to celebrate our daughter's OB-GYN graduation tomorrow. We read the restaurant's reviews and stopped by for a late lunch at 3 p.m. They lock the doors at 4 p.m. We were impressed. There were two people who came before us, and then a group of 14, and then my husband and me, followed by another bunch of people into a restaurant that was already packed. The waitresses did not even bat an eyelid. They were very polite and were busy doing their work. They were helping seat people as well as checking out people who had just eaten. We only waited about 15 - 20 mins. In the meantime, we chatted with the locals, who told us how often they came here just to eat the pies. When we got seated, the first thing we ordered and got started on were the AMAZING pies (chocolate PB for me and custard for my husband). Oh my God, they were out of the world yummy! We got to watch the ladies on the grill as they made the food. My husband ordered he Swiss steak and I had the double hamburger with all the fixings. The food is great but so are the people who work here --they are just so friendly, have worked here for years and truly care. You don't see this anymore. If I lived here, I would come here once a week to chitchat with them and eat PIE!! Make sure you come here. This place is a gem and has been here since 1948. read more

Tried the pies: vanilla peanut butter pie had pronounced vanilla flavor but not overwhelming, nice rich peanut butter flavor you'd expect and the crème topping was a nice light taste that was balanced - the crust however was surprisingly bland and tasteless. Not sure if I expected a honey taste or a typical flaky crust taste what I didn't expect was a complete void of any taste at all. The chocolate peanut butter pie was a bit different had a basic chocolate pudding taste but lacking a huge chocolate flavor like the deep flavor in the vanilla version, shockingly it was lacking was an overall peanut butter flavor while eating the pie unlike its vanilla counterpart where every bite had the PB flavor prevalent in every bite the chocolate version the PB was glaringly absent a big disappointment, the crème topping was balanced and pleasant but thick dominating the flavor of this pie - again the crust however was surprisingly bland and tasteless. Researching menus and the pie history I believe the way it used to be done and now has changed in the past the crème topping was 1/2 the thickness and the PB combo pies had a distinct PB layer between the flavored bottoms and the crème toppings that are lacking in current versions. Past crusts were distinct thickness approx twice the thickness as current versions and a whole different color much browner which would indicate it would have the "flaky" texture you'd expect from their style of pies which currently completely lack any real texture and:or flavor...perhaps it's my batch perhaps I'm being too picky I'm not a pie eater per say but I do know my crusts and what to expect out of a beloved establishment with a rich history in pie making - remember your roots and what made you famous to begin with all the good service in the world won't win you new customers with these pies unfortunately - sadly I cannot recommend these pies for dessert it pains me to write this because I was so happy to see them rebound after the fire - was my first visit as well adding to my disappointment my mum raved about them so expectations were high but alas they failed every level this particular visit - added the picture from your own menu of what I was expecting for visual representation - bring back the past flavors and flaky crust PLEASE!!! The pies are still sublime, but unfortunately, after a fire in the past year and the subsequent rebuild and reopening, they are only open for breakfast and lunch--check the hours. So if you want a Wimpy Burger and a slice of pie for dinner, you're out of luck. read more

Schmucker's is a Toledo institution and you can feel the history when you walk inside. I'm not from Toledo, but I work in town and Schmucker's was one of the first restaurants recommended to me by my coworkers. I recently took my dad and he loved it. The food is simple but good, prices are very reasonable, the service was great, and I appreciate that a cup of coffee comes with the purchase of a meal. Long time serving up pies and eats since 1948. Diner has the old school vibes with a counter which are the best place to sit allowing you to to be in the midst of it all. The dining area is quaint with some booth seating and tables. Service is friendly and each person had a personality that made for the best experience in this old piece of history still doing things well. Nothing screams healthy, my egg salad even had extra mayonnaise slathered on both pieces of bread. The chicken noodle soup had thick egg noodles, the small size is a very generous serving. Pies, yes they make plenty of pies and the earlier you get there your odds go up drastically for getting your choice, I don't know a pie I don't like so just bring a couple slices and call it the end of the day or diet. Great homemade pies, including my favorite:rhubarb! Went for lunch two days ago and the place was packed (as it usually is, which tells you people love the good!}. You can get breakfast anytime and I usually do; the servings are huge and always served quickly and hot. But i decided on a cod sandwich and hand-cut fries, which were plentiful, tasty and golden. I love diners, especially ones with counters and stools and Schmucker's has 2 with 6 stools each. People usually talk to the strangers on each side of them and watch the kitchen and waitstaff action. There also 3 or 4 booths and a couple 4 top tables. These are real servers, handling 6 customers at once, calling you "sweetie," and regulars by their first name. My food was hot and delicious and got my pie to go. The crust was flaky and the rhubarb filling tart, which i love. Customers will find specials like hot toast beef or turkey with mashed potatoes, meatloaf, and other comfort meals. The restaurant and women's restroom were clean and eating areas wiped clean immediately. If you're tired of fast food and impersonal eateries, check out this place. read more

Thought I reviewed this place. It's all about the home fries. They are that homemade crispy type with just the right amount of seasoning. I usually get the sausage biscuits with gravy with home fries and eggs. If you get it to go make sure and ask for the biscuits and gravy in a separate container or you'll have gravy all over everything and ruin those wonderful home fries. It's a family-owned restaurant It's been here forever. No online ordering or grubhub. Old school spot. Very small so I very rarely eat in here because it is packed no matter what time of day. The staff is friendly and the food is homemade. Just missing some good grits. All of the breakfast food is very tasty with the biscuits n gravy being my favorite. We ordered the chocolate shake (absolutely amazing), the special (it was a Turkey mashed potato platter), a burger and a big salad and all of us were happy with our choice. We absolutely love this place for breakfast, however on our last visit we had breakfast in the afternoon and the difference was like night and day.. instead of the quality we had just two days before, we ordered our usual one egg over medium homefries with onions toast and bacon. Stopped at Schmucker's for lunch and was blown away! We loved this place. Everything for the old-time diner feel to the phone booth ringing with to go orders. Diner food at its best--this is a must-stop in Toledo if you like this kind of food & feel! Meatloaf was fluffy and mouthwateringly savory. OH MY GOODNESS WHAT A WONDERFUL DINER!! We stopped in while visiting Toledo and had just the best service! Our waitress was patient, helpful, and had a pleasant demeanor. The diner has that old school no frills vibe, and even has an old phone both in the back. My travel companion got a burger and fries that they enjoyed, while I got the hot roast beef sandwich served dinner style. So that means my meal came with a huge side salad, homemade chicken noodle soup with delicious thick noodles, a giant roast beef sandwich covered in brown gravy, AND I was hooked up with the potato trifecta! So mashed with gravy, fresh cut fries, and homefries! Seriously I was in a heavenly food coma with this meal and gobbled it down. (Well, there was a ton of food so I had to get to-go boxes and have a second dinner later that night in my hotel bed haha). Before we came in we looked at their website to see what pies were on special and their snickers pie was one we wanted in our bellies! However, when we arrived it was about an hour before closing and we were told that popular pie was sold out for the day. So instead we ordered slices of cherry and PB & chocolate pie. BUT, our server must be a foodie angel because she casually dropped a whole dang snickers pie on our table for us to take home and enjoy! When we got back home we split the pie and shared it with friends and family. Oh lordy, that thing was the best! I had to put my loved ones piece in the freezer to stop me from being tempted to eat it before I gave it to them. I ordered take out from this restaurant and I wished I hadn't when I received my food at home. I'm a pregnant lady who was starving and had a specific craving, I asked for the rise and shine, with toast and a slice of apple pie al a mode. I asked for my eggs over hard because I cannot eat any yoke because my body is sensitive to bacterial infections from under cooked foods that can kill my unborn child if I'm not careful. Well the yoke was there and running all over my pancakes. on top of that I got loads of butter and jelly in hopes of getting the toast I paid for, didn't happen, I got no toast with my order and my Apple Pie was DRENCHED in ice cream. The pie was genuinely not even good, and I would know because my taste buds are super heightened at the moment. This diner is amazing! Summer was my server and she was top notch and 5 star worthy. I had the lunch portion fried chicken and it was the best i've had in along time! To top it off I had the BEST Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie I've ever had!! I even have leftovers for tonight's dinner. We went off the beaten path on our road trip from Pittsburgh, PA to our home in the Chicago suburbs to eat at this place. We were hoping to find a "Triple D" recommended diner along the way. But apparently Guy Fieri hasn't made Toledo, OH a destination for his show, yet. So we depended on Google searching & reviews, and settled on Schmucker's. Just like reviewers have said it would be, the place was packed. We got two seats at the bar. Service was friendly and lightning quick. Usually diners' entrees can be greasy, too salty and too sweet. None of that here. Fries were fresh cut, but not crispy. A big pile comes with the burger order. Too big. Burger was tasty and juicy. Breaded veal cutlets were crisp and not salty. Perfect! Side salad )instead of potato choice) was generous. They're known for their homemade pies. My hubby's was the Caramel Apple Walnut which was good. I shouldn't have tried their Key Lime pie since my standard (Mike's Key Lime, Bradenton, FL) is hard to match. I didn't finish my slice. Restrooms could use updating, but it's just a local diner. We love finding iconic restaurants and dining at them when we are driving near unfamiliar cities. This was the case when we were coming back to Indianapolis from London, Ontario. We looked online and found Schmucker's in Toledo. When we drove up and saw the old-fashioned original sign and the small freestanding building we were really excited. Once we walked inside and saw the counter with stools, the case full of homemade pies, and the woman expertly flipping burgers on the griddle we couldn't wait to order! This is not far from the freeway, which made it a convenient stop. The food is old fashioned with big portion sizes. I ordered meatloaf and mashed potatoes. I also tried my husband's order of perch with home fries. Also at our table was a meatloaf sandwich, cheeseburger and fries, and kids' PB & J sandwich with applesauce. Every item I tasted was delicious! One of us ordered grilled chicken at first, and the waitress kindly informed us it would take 25 minutes, so the order was changed. We didn't want a stop that long while on the road, so I appreciated that she told us. We finished off with a slice of caramel apple walnut pie. Wow! The pie was so decadent. Schmucker's is a time capsule in both atmosphere and dining options. Everything you'd expect and want from a classic American diner is available, from traditional breakfasts to cheeseburgers and gravy covered meatloaf, and for the most part it's all solid. It's also an establishment known for their more traditional values, which are represented in the encouragement of prayer on their menu, and a crowd that often visibly reflects extremely conservative beliefs. My recent visit found us sitting next to a group all wearing MAGA baseball caps, for whatever it's worth. That said, it's the service and the pie that get dinged a few stars from my perspective. The waitstaff do a good job taking orders and delivering food, but that's about it. On my last visit, our waitress was visibly annoyed at the hint of a custom order, and never returned to offer us drink refills. And for the pie? While it's something they are known for, I'm not really sure why beyond the fact that you just don't find pie around town much these days. They offer a wide variety of seasonal flavors, but the quality is low and often ever so slightly disappointing. I brought a friend from Ann Arbor who only took one bite of his custard pie, and my strawberry cheesecake was not worth the calories. I suspect Schmuckers will always be a part of the Toledo community and for that I'm grateful. Just don't let the high praise from locals fool you.
